Creamy Potato Puree
Donnell K.

The food? Excellent. Truly. I went with a group of nine colleagues and the flavors across the board were impressive. The standout for me was the ribeye ...absolutely melted in your mouth. One of the best I've had in a long time. That said, while the food was memorable, the service unfortunately was not. Our server seemed pleasant and well-intentioned, but the experience felt rushed, disorganized, and at times unnecessarily defensive when mistakes were made. There were several order mix-ups throughout the evening, and instead of simply acknowledging the errors, the response was often framed as though members of our table had changed their minds or misunderstood. That happened more than once. One example: two of us ordered the ribeye and were told it came with mashed potatoes, so we added a Caesar salad. When the steak arrived , we saw it came with a lovely discovered arugula salad alongside the potatoes. When we mentioned cancelling the Caesar because of that, the response implied we had simply missed the explanation but we hadn't. He was never communicated. Other small things added up: delayed bread and butter service, a drink order delivered incorrectly, and even the restroom being out of paper towels. Oddly, the attentiveness noticeably increased once it was time to settle the bill even though there was an automatic gratuity already included for a large party. We still had a great time because the company and food carried the evening. But for a restaurant at this level, the service experience needs more consistency, accountability, and training. Great food alone probably isn't enough to bring me back.

Delicious Sunday lasagna- nice tender meat in a cheesy sauce

Located on the 2nd floor of the Kimpton Era Midtown hotel, Bar Rocco is the perfect place for a pre-theatre lunch. The location is just a short walk from most plays and is a newer location opened by celebrity Chef Rocco DeSpirito. You may even see him at the bar or checking on his guests. The food presentation and service (by Julia R) was excellent. I would highly recommend the Fish & Chips $28 in a light tempura batter looking like to tasty eggrolls. The potato wedge fries are excellent, but are overly salty. The Sunday sauce lasagna $32 in its own hot casserole dish was off the hook. It had: Two big pieces of tender sausage and high quality ground beef all under homemade layered noddles in a béchamel -mozzarella slightly browned masterpiece. The fresh basil made the dish. Nice tomato sauce - just the right spice. Coffee and espresso were hot and perfect. Montalcino red wine at $15 was excellent. Rolling rock beer in an ice cold glass ($10) hit the spot - although a slightly overpriced domestic. Nice to see Corona n/a beer on the menu. Nearby diners had oysters which looked properly shucked and fresh. Three minor items to consider: the cushioned chairs facing the window are very heavy and hard to move, the space between the tables is narrow causing you to hit the table when you go to window seat. I'm older, but I climbed the three story long stairs to the 2nd floor, but wished I took the elevator before lunch. I didn't see a small sign saying the restaurant was on the 2nd floor. Highly recommended, I can't wait to come back and order from the rest of the menu.

Rocco DiSpirito- a culinary judge on so many tv shows my husband and I watch. My challenge: eat food from thise we see cooking on TV and the judges! So when in NY looking for a dinner spot of course Rocco's hit my radar! Bar Rocco is nestled away on the 2nd floor of the Kimpton downtown. First off. That's tells you something right there. KIMPTONS ARE LEGIT. Bar Rocco takes reservations. The staff immediately were very friendly. Seated quickly. Negative: seats are squished in. Odd how it wasn't busy but they chose to put my seat against another woman's so if either had to move, so did the other. Our table was wobbly but our server was happy to jump in. It wasn't totally fixed but better than it was. We shared the meatballs and pappardelle genovese. The meatballs basically fell apart they were so soft but the sauce was delicious! Did have a little kick to it. The pappardelle, very fresh pasta and good sauce. Needed a little salt. Overall good choices and just enough for 2! I still want more of that sauce so I do put my trust in judge Rocco!!

We liked Bar Rocco a lot. The food, service and vibe were all very good. All and all it was a good experience.

Bar Rocco is a brand new restaurant inside the Kimpton Era Hotel. The dining room is attractive, but it is not very busy. I stopped in for lunch with Ashley P. to give it a try. I went with the Pappardelle Genovese, and Ashley the Paccheri with Shrimp. My Pappardelle was good, but nothing spectacular. Ashley liked her pasta but felt that it was undercooked. The bill was fair, and we may give Bar Rocco another try.

A sidecar!

Bar Rocco over delivered. I am on my way back for dinner tonight, so I can update this later. This is a new restaurant so I was expecting hiccups, but Bar Rocco was very good. Our first meal was a brunch for four. The standouts were the skirt steak and the salmon, although all of the meals were great. The hummus appetizer was unforgettable!! Drinks were great too!

Basque Cheesecake

I am not sure if I can adequately describe how great our dining experience was at Bar Rocco on my wife's birthday. We've been followers of Chef DiSpirito for over twenty years, and were excited to try his new venture. We were greeted by the manager the moment we stepped off the elevator, and service never missed a step from that point on. We were seated with a nice view of Rockefeller Plaza, and as we started perusing the menu, a male voice started making some suggestions. We looked up to see Chef DiSpirito standing in front of us. We were quite honored he took the time to make our acquaintance, and he really did make some helpful suggestions for our menu choices. We started with cocktails and appetizers, Mama's Meatballs and Oysters Rocco-Feller. The meatballs melt in your mouth, and the oysters were a neat spin on the classic. My wife had the ribeye steak for her entree and is pretty sure it's the best steak she's ever had in a restaurant. I had the sautéed salmon which had an amazing crispy skin on top. For dessert, we chose a Basque cheesecake which was a first for us, and we wonder why we've never had one before. We also had a tiramisu which is our go-to dessert many times, and it did not disappoint. We can't wait to visit again; the only problem I have is how I'm going to make birthdays this epic from now on. Thank you to everyone at Bar Rocco who made this evening so memorable.

I was warmly greeted by the gentleman at the door (5 service there), which set a great first impression. However, as soon as I walked downstairs, it felt like the space had lost its speakeasy vibe. I was seated right near the stairs and could feel cold air from outside every time the door opened, which made the experience uncomfortable. I was also surprised to see how much the cocktail menu had been reduced. When I asked about it, the response was that "the place changed a lot." That's fair -- places evolve -- but instead of highlighting the improvements or new strengths, the explanation focused negatively on what the bar used to be. As someone who really enjoyed the former version, that wasn't reassuring. Unfortunately, the drinks themselves didn't make up for it. One of the two cocktails was simply not good. No one came back to check on the drinks, and when I asked for the check after about 20 minutes, there was no acknowledgment that I had barely touched mine or any inquiry about my experience. Overall, a place I once enjoyed and recommended now feels more like a standard dive bar where " Mixologist " were replaced by bartender and were fun cool looking and tasty drinks were replaced by " less complex cocktail ", lacking the warmth and attention to detail that once made it special.

Easy to find if you know what you're looking for, if you arrive right at 5pm on a cold weeknight in the winter, you'll easily find a table or seat at the bar. Very cute space, cozy like everyone says, but nothing mind blowing. Music is moderately loud. The menu in early February still included their winter holiday cocktails. I was more interested in the apple sage house-made fermented soda, and it was pretty good-large glass, flavorful and not too sweet. My friend enjoyed her pomegranate version. The space started to fill up at around 5:30. Service was polite when you could get it, but generally very inattentive, even before it got busy. It honestly didn't feel too different from anu other very nice NYC bar, in terms of menu selection, prices, ambiance and service. Maybe that's standard for NYC speakeasies, but the places I frequented in other cities were more fun and felt more worth the price. I'll still give another NYC spot a try, but not coming back to Thyme.

They're experimental, whimsical, delicious, and worth every penny. My absolute favorite is Child of Light, and my BF's was High Frequency Device. We were sat at the bar once and were very well taken care of by our bartender, Nikola. It was a Sunday night, so it wasn't terribly busy. We chatted up a storm and he was able to create some drinks off the menu just for fun (on request). He also made my BF and me a couple of drinks to celebrate our anniversary too. Wonderful people and wonderful service. Needless to say, we will be back as frequently as we can!

Lo and behold, she did have a table for us - as long as we were out in an hour and a half, which was just the right amount of time. Stepping into this place feels like you're in some secret, super special cocktail club. Decor is super high end, vibes are upscale AF. The cocktail menu is incredible -- and incredibly pricey, but truly worth it. I ordered the Valentino which was strong and sweet, really well made. They gave out a complimentary nut mix that was also delicious. Service was swift and gracious. If you're looking for a spot to impress a date, this is it.

The mint Moroccan tea gave the drink a cool, refreshing taste on every sip. I also tried the Silver Screen, the closest drink I could find to an old fashioned. It was interesting, there was definitely a hint of a buttery taste. Overall a really balanced bourbon drink. I walked in and found room at the standing tables. It somehow manages to feel both refined and relaxed at the same time. The kind of place where you half expect to spot Hemingway in the corner pretending not to eavesdrop. We started with half a dozen oysters, which were fresh, briny, and exactly what you want with serious cocktails. Crisp, clean, gone in about three minutes. For drinks, we ordered the Smoke Show and the King Tusk. The Smoke Show was beautifully balanced. The Grey Goose vodka and Dolin Dry gave it that classic martini backbone, but the fino sherry and brine added depth. The smoked olive oil and blue cheese olive brought just enough savory drama without overpowering the glass. It was complex but not fussy. The King Tusk leaned more aromatic and layered. The vermouths gave it richness, while the Buddha's Hand and osmanthus flower added subtle citrus and floral notes that lingered in a really elegant way. It felt like a cocktail designed to be savored slowly. The music fit the mood perfectly, not too loud, just enough to give the room energy without killing conversation. Overall, it's a great spot if you want elevated drinks in a space that feels transportive without being pretentious. Definitely a place I'd come back to when I'm in the mood for a refined, slightly cinematic night out in Flatiron.
