I heard about Bar Moro from a friend, having just been to Spain this past summer I was craving for an authentic Spanish tapas place. Although as some of the other reviewers mentioned, this place is not cheap, but it's still the best Spanish restaurant I've been to in Saint Louis. It's much like a Tapas bar, small and cozy. My favorite of course if the Jamon Iberico, if you havent tried it, its an amazing cured pork serve in thin slices that melts in your mouth, I have been craving this since I got back from Spain and this is the only restaurant I found that serves it. We stuck to the tapas and the conservas, most were decent, it's definitely not as good as local Spanish tapas, but you aren't paying for a plane ticket to Spain either. read more

Omg I have been wanting to go here since they first opened and let me tell you, they did not disappoint! I was beyond impressed. It's such a tiny little place, I had no idea until I got there. And be sure to make a reservation far in advance! They book up quick. But the service was impeccable. Every staff member I met was incredibly nice and welcoming. They made me feel like a VIP lol. They were all very knowledgeable and I swear the bartender and server both knew every detail about every drink or food dish that we questioned. And were also able to make great recommendations on what to get and what pairs well together. The restaurant is beautiful as well. I couldn't stop take pics! So insta-worthy! I was obsessed. Perfect for a date night or nice dinner with friends. It's upscale but not uppity or formal. However, it is relatively loud in there since it's such a small place and it's pretty crowded. There isn't a lot of standing room if you are waiting for a table. They do have an outdoor seating area, but it was frigid when I was there, so of course no one was out there. I added several pictures of what I ordered. All so delicious! My favorite was the dessert. I forgot what it was called exactly, but it was a warm toasted cheesecake if I'm remembering correctly. So so yummy. I will definitely be back, I HAVE to try everything on this menu! And excited to see what they may add in the future. read more

Walking into Bar Moro is escaping the normal St. Louis restaurant scene and transporting you to NYC. The atmosphere is dimly lit, cozy, romantic! We were lucky enough to get a spot at the bar and able to watch the cooks work! We first ordered some drinks and oysters. I thought the spritz tasted watered down but the mes que un was fine. The oysters are definitely not freshly shucked as we watched the cooks spoon oysters from a plastic container into empty shells on a bed of ice (not sure how I feel about this). For our main course we had the sturgeon and chicken in lobster sauce. The menu says these feed 2-4 people which is ridiculous. My girlfriend and I each finished our entree with ease, so if you are ordering one of these entrees please be aware they are not large portions. The sturgeon was tasty in the garlic clam sauce. Our waitress brought by some complimentary bread to soak up the sauce (mentioned in a previous review) which was a nice touch. The chicken in lobster sauce almost tasted spoiled. I did note the sauce was pre-packaged in plastic containers and heated up in the oven. The chicken and lobster sauce we were unable to finish with bread as it was unpalatable. I think that Bar Moro caters to a niche Mediterranean palate that I cannot appreciate. Don't bother to try to buy a gift card to this restaurant. I live in another city and wanted to give my daughter and her family a gift card to Bar Moro since they live nearby. Problem is... if you click on the gift card option two of their other restaurants pop up. No mention of Bar Moro. No phone number or email listed on their website, so no way to contact them (that's surely on purpose). Meanwhile, I bought a $150 gift card to another restaurant that explains up front that the card is good at all their restaurants. Two stars apparently means "could've been better." No shit sherlock. They need to get their website's lousy act together. read more

I had patiently waited for some friends availability to try Bar Moro together and finally had the chance. The entire experience from seating to payment was exceptional - we even made friends with another patron and scored a round of drinks! Highly recommend the tomate (use the table bread to soak up the leftover sauce) and enjoyed the pintxos moros immensely. The selection of oysters was fresh and tasteful, and the dirty martinis were perfect. The only slight complaint was the line to the bathroom, but it's a small space and understandable. read more

Caught up with a friend last week at this cute new resto in the heart of Clayton. The food was delish! We had the canned scallop conserva. This was excellent. Then we shared the chicken and lobster entre and fries. The staff was so knowledgeable about the food and wine pairings. The chef came out and was really passionate and grateful for our business. I've been wanting to try this place since I live walking distance and heard great reviews. Finally had the chance and it did not disappoint. First impression was it was small and intimate. Dark woods and very romantic feeling. The waiter was knowledgeable and gave good recommendations. He was attentive with drink refills and tableware. Food was great!!! Everything is shareable. I went with my husband and another couple so it was fun to try a bunch of items. The menu was challenging for all of us because known of us are familiar with Spanish cuisine. Our waiter was kind and patient. We started with the Mohamara. This was a harissa base dip giving it a nice Smokey flavor. It came with 4 big slices of bread to dip in it. We also started with the Jamon iberico. Beautiful thinly sliced, melt in your mouth ham. My only negative is I wish we had more!!!! We then ordered the roasted cabbage and patata brava. Both were fantastic!!! I never think to order cabbage but it was something different. It had chickpeas mixed with it and was a perfect light starter. The patata bravo was also amazing. The potatoes had the perfect crisp with a tasty sweet/smokey sauce. For our larger plates, my husband and I shared the roasted lamb! WE LOVED!! Both would get again. Our friends shared the rib of beef which looked delicious and they also said it was amazing. To close the night we all ordered the basque cheesecake. It was smooth, fluffy, creamy, and delicious. Great experience and I want to come back and try more dishes. My only negative was I felt like the cocktails were lacking. Had a tremendously great meal with the standouts being a tuna dish with kale and beans (exquisite) and a side of carrots cooked to perfection. I'm hazy on the culinary details but don't let that deter you. The service was on point--attentive without the overkill we've all experienced. The sever was very helpful in advising us how to order (including specific dishes and how much to get from each section of the menu to optimize sharing). My only complaint is that Bar Moro was a tad loud due to the acoustics but we managed to hear each other. Otherwise a great dining experience and definitely recommended. read more

Considering what it costs to eat here, we definitely expected more uniqueness and diversity of flavor, presentation, and ingredients. Our server did a relatively poor job of describing the menu and giving suggestions...and as a result, I felt a bit ripped off because most of what we ate was bread. Why ask us if we have ever eaten here before...and then give zero guidance? For example, when I order tapas...I expect multiple different dishes. Instead, everything was served on toast. We didn't eat all of our egg tortilla when it was dry and clearly overcooked, to which the server responded with "Do you want more bread with it?" Excuse me, what? Cocktails here were great but that's about it. Best espresso martini I've ever had. I really wish it wasn't such a disappointing experience considering the great restaurant that was in the space before...but sadly we won't return. read more

Went last evening with my companion and loved the experience, the room and the awesome food. I believe it was Alex who was our server at the bar. My companion had picked the place out and knew she wanted oysters and ? We got the gazpacho which Alex paired with a sipping shot of gin. Was tremendous and a whole new experience. The oysters were tasty and perfectly prepared. The vinegar based sauce with them was great and a real revelation. She recommended some other items which we got and loved! She seamlessly took care of us and made our visit memorable and delightful. This is definitely a 5 star restaurant from the gourmet food to thservice, and ambiance. It is rather small in seating availability. Seating is very cozy and close to other parties. The service was excellent explaining the menu and offering suggestions. We were a party of 4 and were recommended to get 4 small plates and 2 large plates. We got the olives, con tomate, Bikini con trufa, and a potato white fish options. All delicious and came with a lot of bread so we only got one large plate that had marinated chicken thigh pieces that were grilled and in a yogurt based white sauce? It was excellent also. We finished with an exquisite light whipped cream cheese/crème de brûlée type dessert. The drinks were amazing too! We enjoyed Sangria, Gin #1 #4 drinks . I really wanted to love Bar Moro. As soon as reservations opened up, I grabbed the first available table for 4 on our next available weekend. The space and ambiance are gorgeous - moody, intimate, and romantic. The staff from the host to the bartender to the waiter were attentive, and friendly, and answered all questions with ease. Everything was set up to be a truly fantastic culinary experience, but then it began to falter. We ordered drinks first. My martini don Ernesto was good, but we were underwhelmed by the selection of wine by the glass and the prices start at $15 for a 4oz pour of red. We were not impressed, but let's be honest, we were really there for the food. We ordered a spread of options really wanting to try a variety and get the whole experience. We started with the pan de la casa which was fine but not much offered for the price. The garlic butter that was paired with it was delicious. The five tapas we ordered (mohamara i.e. roasted red pepper dip, tuna toast, egg + caviar, salted cod croquettes, and Iberico jamon and queso) were pretty good but not exceptional. Of the five, I would recommend the mohamara, tuna toast, and egg + caviar; pass on the other two as the iberco and queso was overly sweet and the other flavors didn't come through and the croquettes were bland. Next came the shrimp cocktail which was just bad. The shrimp seemed old despite the menu indicating they are delivered fresh daily, were very small, and had that undesirable mushy/mealy/gritty mouth feel. We couldn't finish this. Next up was the bikini con trufa (to which we added the shaved black truffles) and the tortilla. The bikini con trufa was the shining star of the evening - absolutely delicious! The Spanish tortilla was okay but caramelized onion emulsion completely overwhelmed the other flavors. I would not recommend this one and we didn't finish it. Lastly, we ordered two main dishes including the carne asada and the mar i muntanya (chicken with lobster sauce). The chicken and lobster sauce was awful, and I really hate to say something like this about any dish at a restaurant because I understand the thought and dedication that goes into every dish in a place like Bar Moro. My table described it as if it had been cooked in burnt oil. We sent the whole dish back which is probably the second time in my life I have done that. The staff kindly took it off our bill because like I said the staff was great. The carne asada was very good - well-marinated and cooked as we indicated. The portion size is not for 2-4 as the menu indicated - it is the appropriate size for a single person as a main dish. We were really happy this main dish worked out. We did not have dessert because we were sufficiently full and deflated by the food thus far. Overall, the space is gorgeous, the staff was great, one item was excellent and a couple of items were good, but the bad was bad enough to damper our experience. At this price point, everything should be top-notch and we felt that the price definitely did not match our experience. I'll be ordering the bikini to go and might be back if the menu is updated. read more

I wanted to love this place, but it just fell short for me. This place has received so much hype and praise from local foodies and food bloggers, so perhaps my expectations were too high? When I went to make a reservation, the soonest I could get one was two weeks out, which only built my anticipation more. I had read the menu in advance and was aware this would be an expensive meal, but I did not know that the portion sizes were TINY. My partner and I spent $150 before tip and left hungry. The salted cod croquettes tapas plate came with 3 pieces, each about half the size of a fish stick. I'd say it was about 6 bites total for this plate. These were good and I'd eat them again. Each of us ordered the ensalada wedge, which was okay but a little lack luster. I found the dressing to be a bit bland and the dish really needed some acid. The "potato crumble" on top reminded me of everything bagel seasoning. We decided to split an entree dish as it said it fed 2-4 people and I was worried it might be too much food for just the two of us after splitting the tapas plate and each eating a vegetable dish. However, we were very disappointed in the portion when it arrived. We chose the chicken in lobster sauce dish. Listing this dish as something that could feed 2-4 people is insane. We split it between two and only got a few small pieces of chicken each. There was a ton of sauce left, which likely would have been good with bread to dip or a grain like rice or orzo, and if that would have been provided, maybe we would have been full. Relatedly - the table behind us continued to get complimentary bread throughout the night but it was never offered to us. A friend of mine who dined here previously told me the bread was only offered with certain dishes. I guess that's fine, but if I'm spending $150, I'd think a couple of rolls wouldn't break the business. We ordered three different cocktails, and each of them were really good and maybe the saving grace for our experience. Overall - we came hungry, and left hungry. I'd come back for drinks only, but likely will not return for a full meal unless I hear prices or portion sizes have changed. read more

Outstanding food and service! Started with the jamon iberico and pan con tomate. The jamon was perfectly sliced and their version of pan con tomate was delicious. The egg and caviar tapa is absurdly satisfying, and a steal at $10. The Spanish tortilla with caramelized onions and blood sausage was properly cooked, and balanced between savory and sweet. The carne asada was seasoned well and easy to share. The wine menu offers a totally unique experience, unlike any other in town. If you have an open mind towards the suggested pairings, you will have a wonderful time. read more

Let me start by saying that I enjoy all of the restaurants owned by Ben Poremba except for the French one that was in Clayton. The atmosphere, ambience, concept, unique flavors, attention to detail, cocktails, and service are all amazing. I don't think there's anything like this in St. Louis and you can tell so much thought and effort were put into every last detail. However, we just were not blown away by the flavors of the food. So many of them had great detail and care put into the execution, but it was just OK. Went tonight with my significant other. Very nice vibe to the restaurant; it is beautiful inside. Noticed they had the outside set up too. Whitney was a great server and was very helpful with our food choices. Tried the shrimp, the eggplant, the omelette, and the ham&cheese sandwich. All were very good, especially the eggplant. This was definitely enough (if not too much) food for two people. Cocktails and wine were interesting and good too. One more thing - we also had the Basque cheesecake for dessert. My fiancé and I were so excited to try this spot but overall really underwhelmed by the experience. It was very expensive and some of the dishes just weren't great. The restaurant itself is visually beautiful but also SO DARK in spots it's ridiculous. The service was really good,appreciate that they bring bread, but also I'm pretty sure without it, we'd have been starving The mar and Montana (chicken and lobster) dish was really the most disappointing. Incredible meal, spectacular service (thank you Courtney) and a beautiful venue. The food was complex, interesting, satisfying and memorable. Started with the white tuna belly. The cod fritters were umami and salty in the best way. Hand sliced jambon with pan tomate - a perfect pair. Don't skip sautéed shrimp dipping up all of the sauce. We barely had room for the ham/cheese/mushroom-truffle sandwich and carne asada - but glad we ordered them. Will be back for the cheesecake. Was excited to come here for a date night and wasn't disappointed! I was surprised to see "meh" reviews on here, because we had a great experience and our food was all really excellent. The space is really cool and intimate (small, but not in a bad way). We sat at the bar and enjoyed watching the chefs in front of us prepare dishes, some of which were ours. We had the tuna toast, queso, piquillos, embutidos, tortilla, and cheesecake. All were great, but the favorites were the tortilla and cheesecake. There was also a really excellent bleu cheese on the cheese board, and the serrano ham on the meat plate is hand sliced at the bar (they also have a leg of iberico but that's separate from the embutidos plate). They have an extensive tinned fish menu, which we didn't try but I look forward to trying next time. I also caught a glimpse of the eggs and caviar as someone else was eating it and will definitely be ordering that next time. The gin and tonic #2 was also really, really good. Our server (Alexandra? Alex?) was really great and made some good suggestions on what to try, and they coursed out our food perfectly. The chef behind the bar (Javon?) was also very friendly and we enjoyed chatting with him. We will definitely return here! read more
