In the mood for something different so we dropped in here. First impression was that it was very clean (as an aside, even the restroom was spotless). We were escorted to a booth near the bar area, took our seats and ordered soda and tea. Surprisingly, they came in smallish plastic cups with lids. Orders were placed and while waiting we admired some of the painted walls. The plaintains were nicely cooked and filled with beef. Being smothered in mozzarella cheese was nice also. We weren't disappointed with the taste either. The menu is pretty extensive so it will take a few minutes to figure out what you want. Overall, an excellent experience and we'll be back. read more

This little spot offers a wide variety of Columian favorites. We had the corn and flour empanadas and both were delicious. My favorite: the beef flour empanada. We also ordered the campestre salad. Nice informal Colombian cafe catty corner from OB Clark's in the former Applegates space. We started with blackberry drinks (jugo de mora) which were delicious! I had the churrasco steak, which was just ok - rather bland and fatty. For sides, fries and tostones, both very good. My wife had whole fried fish (mojarra frita) which she thoroughly enjoyed. Give me a place with good empanadas and I am in!! I eat at Maize and Wheat fairly often, in fact when I went to check in today I realized I had an unfinished review. I love how this small family / community run place has grown over the time I have been coming. They started with counter service but as traffic grew, they added a great wait staff and deepened the menu too. Empanadas are what always come calling. Something about meat and starch (maybe cheese too) fried that just gets me whether it's samosas at Indian places, meat pies at Jamaican restaurants or Cajun crawfish pies. I am here for them all! Here you have a lot of options. The list of corn empanadas is shorter but you do not want to sleep on them. They are amazing. I like the flour but the crunch and texture of corn is just so good. What flour empanadas lack there , they more than make up for in options and variety. The combinations are top notch. And the filling is always (in my experience anyway) a perfect combination. I recommend two, maybe three empanadas. I love the arepas too and there are a lot of choices as well. You only need one for sure! I came with a small group a couple of months ago and found us ordering a wide range of things so we could try and all of us were really happy with a full range of things. Another piece I enjoy, while you definitely know the Latin communities support it, you are also likely to see families, student groups, etc. more than a few times I have heard people saying they loved Colombia and had missed the food. Ordered empanadas to go this Thursday night. Tried the corn cheese empanada and the flour cheese empanada. I would say the corn cheese empanada is my preference. It's got that comfort corn and cheese combination and the salsa dipping sauce went well with the empanada. I did not realize this place had dine in area and a bar. We went to Maize and Wheat restaurant for the first time. After reading so many good reviews, I thought I would be wowed at the food here. But, No - I had such a terrible eating experience. My husband ordered the Churrasco medium rare - the beef was served well done on a room temperature sizzler plate. When we asked our server about that, he simply blamed on the sizzler plate overcooked the meat and walked away. Such a cute response. I ordered the Corrientazo con pollo - the chicken was served cold as well. At this point, I didn't bother to ask the server again, because he didn't seem care about customer's feedback. This morning I visited Maize and Wheat and was very happy that I did. I got the Chicharrona Arepa, and it was totally excellent. I thought it was a good size and had plenty of filling. The fried pork belly was crispy in some spots and soft and chewy in others, just like it's supposed to be. There was lots of mozzarella and every once in a while you got a bite of sweet plantains. It was really delicious. The coconut limeade was so good - a bit creamy and sweet and the perfect balance between lime and coconut. Also got the guayaba empanada, which I thought was a little small, actually. But it was a delicious combination of sweet guava and salty mozzarella within the fried dough. Definitely will be back to try some of the desserts, as they all sounded amazing. Clean and bright inside, plenty of seating, service was quick. read more

I was out running errands in the area and needed something light to hold me over until my friend's birthday lunch this afternoon. I decided to take a quick peek at the menu to see if they had any empanadas to hold me over and they did. I was quite surprised after walking in as it was bigger than I imagined. There's ample booths and tables and they even have a bar! I walked up to the cashier and ordered my chicken empanada, which came out to $4.74. Not bad! She gave me a number with a stand to wait until my order was ready. Since I was getting this to go, I decided to sit in a booth and wait until it was ready. I got a chance to look around and admire all the bright colors and all the things that represented Colombia. The other patrons at the tables were all enjoying their food and conversations and overall, the vibe seemed really positive. It's the little things like this that I enjoy about smaller restaurants. After a short while, my order was brought to me and off I went. The first bite was good! It was still hot but you could really taste the freshness of the corn as well as the other ingredients. It came with some sort of sauce (I'm guessing it's a hot sauce of some sort). I dipped my empanada in there to try it and it wasn't bad but def. has a kick. I was really hoping for a bit more flavor with the chicken but nonetheless, I still enjoyed it. This place has everything from breakfast to dinner, a bar with happy hours throughout the week, and an abundance of juices, salads, and dessert. On my most recent visit, I got the Bandeja Paisa, which to me, is like a big combination plate that comes with white rice, red beans, fried belly pork, ground beef, a fried egg, sweet plantains, an arepa, and avocado! First time guests, we will return. You will order at the counter before you are seated. Our host was kind and walked us through the menu options. Food is delicious. We tried two soups. The Cesar salad for fiber. Guayaba Flour empanada. And the Lulo tropical juice. The Ajiaco Soup is going to be my new go to for chicken soup on a cold day. Delivered with a side of Avocado, white rice and a coffee creamer. Served at a hot hot hot temperature which I enjoyed very much. The plantain soup was tasty and hearty had a stew like quality. The guayaba empanadas was the perfect dessert like treat. Sweet, the flavor Reminded a bit of a crab Rangoon. The star of our meal was the Lulo tropical juice. I had never tried this exotic fruit and I'm so glad I did. Tasted very fresh and not artificial. The dinning room is clean and welcoming. I like the colorful window shutter wall booths. Went here a few weeks ago and had soup. Was very tasty, efficient service, a good experience. We were excited to go back. The two stars are because our first trip was nice. Went today and it was absolutely horrible. -10 stars Ordered a steak with chimichurri. Asked for med rare, received a half-cold piece of someone's shoe. I've never put catsup on a steak until today but it was so dry I couldn't swallow it. Cooked to death, no seasoning, a tiny greenish area that I think was supposed to be the sauce. I felt so bad for the poor cow, it deserved better. Spouse reported his food was bad also, and he's way less fussy than I am. Server checked on other tables and ignored us. I guess it's a strategy for not having to take back crap food, but it's also a good way to not get a tip. read more

First time trying this place out. I Tried to dine here yesterday. Sign said they were open lights were on but no one answered the door. During that time numerous other patrons showed up with the same response. Today I showed up to have dinner. I ordered the steak with rice and beans. Steak just wasn't right. No flavor and tough. but the beans had to be at least 2-3 days old, dry and stale. They turned into a paste before I could put them on the rice. Very disappointing. Great food and friendly service! I came here with my partner recently and it was very cold, windy, and lightly snowy night. I got the ajiaco soup and it was perfect to warm me up. Between the rich soup, the chicken and potatoes inside, and the rice on the side that I added, I was sooooo full by the time we got done. The capers were a nice touch to round out the flavors. My partner got the bandeja paisa. The plate came loaded so high with rice, beans (I don't know what kind, but they weren't the kind of red beans or black beans we've had before at other Latin American restaurants), plantains, a fried egg, and so much meat! It was definitely big enough for two people to share without getting anything else. The fried pork was a bit on the chewy side, but I liked the flavor of the ground beef and the Colombian sausage. For drinks, I got a passion fruit juice and my partner got a guava juice. The passion fruit was okay, but I was expecting it to be a bit more sweet. The guava juice was amazing and I'll get that next time! It wasn't very busy inside with diners since it was a Monday night, but they were pretty busy the whole time with people picking up to go orders. I would come back again! Overall, food was good. Though, I had a beef empanada that oooooozed of grease, but it was nicely seasoned, just greasy. They have some growing pains though - the timing of their ordering is bad. I placed an order online and it said ready in "10-20 minutes", but then I got an email 5 minutes afterwards letting me know "the order was finished and ready to pick up!" Well I got there 20 minutes after, and they hadn't even started cooking the order! So I waited another 28 minutes for it, and when finished they forgot to give me one of the beef empanadas I ordered. Since I already paid for it, I would wait as they cook up another one for 15 minutes... Another customer came to pick up and the counter person said, the order wasn't recorded. Mind you, it's not crowded, and most of the ordering is probably done online. I will say I also had their Caldo de costilla - Beef ribs broth arepa santandereana, which was nice. read more

I drive past this place all the time and finally made a stop in. I was in the mood for an empanada. I ordered both the chicken and cheese empanada. Other empanadas were great!! I would order either again but the cheese surpassed the chicken. I also ordered the Grilled Beef Arepa which I also really enjoyed and would order again. The price was great! I love when my husband and I can eat for under 50 dollars. I feel like it's hard to find these days. We got two arepas, four empanadas, a fountain drink and a side of plantains and spent less than 50 dollars. The staff was also very helpful and helped us decide what to get. Usually, I take their advice but today I had to listen to my cravings. He recommended the Columbia arepa which has sausage in it and the bandeja pasta. You'll walk in and order at the counter. They have paper menus to hold or screens above the register. If you are new, ask for recommendations. Grab a seat and when your name is called you can grab your food. The seating is made up of booths and tables. They won't win any awards for their ambiance as it feels a bit like a food court. You can definitely tell that the restaurant space used to be divided into two different restaurants before. We ordered 3 empanadas and 1 arepa and the blackberry juice. The chicken and beef empanadas needed a bit of salsa to make them a bit more juicy. The dough was light and flaky and the filling was adequate. I also ordered the Hawaiian empanada with cheese, ham, and pineapple. So good on its own, but elevated once we added the sweet mayonnaise dipping sauce provided. The chicharron arepa was the star of the show. It was sooo cheesy! The sweet plantains made every bite so much better. And the salty bites of pork belly rounded out the whole experience. We ordered the blackberry juice, because where else have you ever seen fresh blackberry juice on a menu? Totally seedless, but 100% fresh. Not too sweet and not too tart. Absolutely the best drink we could have ordered. Although, lots of other reviews talk about the coconut lemonade, so I'll order that next time. Met up for lunch here, our first time, with an out-of-town visitor. Colorful and comfortable inside, exciting menu of items we've mostly never heard of before. Server took our orders of arepas and we enjoyed them with their nicely done corn flatbreads. Our well-traveled friend said her arepa was the best she'd ever had. We could not resist getting takeout tres leches which appeared strawberry topped and in pre-made cups. They were so good, although technically not supposed to be that wet. Going to return sometime to try more items on the menu, especially stuffed plantain. By the time we left, the place was packed.
