Totally a vibe, and I would 100% recommend it. We walked in on a random weekday and were surprised to find the place absolutely bustling. The ambiance is dark and moody, with vintage touches throughout that give it a lot of character and charm. We ordered at the bar, and the drinks arrived quickly. The food, however, took quite a while to come out. Given how busy the restaurant was, I suspect the kitchen was simply backed up.We started with the burrata salad, which was everything you'd want from a spring salad - fresh, light, and full of flavor. The roasted chicken was slightly under-seasoned for my taste, but the portion was so generous that we ended up taking leftovers home. Reheated with a few sauces, it was still delicious the next day. The White Negroni and wine paired beautifully with the meal, and the cake we ordered for dessert was the perfect ending. Rich, satisfying, and exactly what we were hoping for after dinner. So, you want to meet up with some coworkers on a sunny Thursday afternoon, but you're not sure when they'll arrive, so you want a relaxed, spacious pub where you can have some wine or cocktails and catch up on expenses while you wait for them to arrive. Bar Loon is that pub. The back patio is a terrific relaxed atmosphere, and flexible to the weather since it's covered. They have a happy hour from 4-6pm; it's a short happy hour, but it has house onion chips and $10 wine, and what could be bad? (BTW: I see complaints in other reviews about needing to order at the bar -- and maybe wait in line. I don't get it. The bartenders are cheerful and efficient, it's really not a big deal. Super cute spot. We loved the back area with the cozy lighting and picnic tables. It gave being outdoors while being mostly indoors. They were cool with us having our pup with us. Came for a bit of a pre-dinner cocktail and snack. We ordered their take on an Espresso martini which was PHENOMENAL. It had the most lovely foam top, silky smooth, delicious espresso with the hint of cinnamon flavor which was utterly delightful and easy to drink in one go. I wanted another but alas we didn't budget time for a second round. The other drink was more of a light tart spritzy drink with the guava element. Very refreshing. The "snack" bite we ordered was the fried artichokes. This came out quickly. I was delighted with the portion size and the healthy amount of fresh dill atop them. This was served with a nice aioli for dipping with just a hint of kick. They were a nice seasoned outer crisp. Very yum. Would easily order again. Highly recommend for drinks and food! read more

The food is definitely the bright spot at what is basically a neighborhood bar. I like the casual concept of a friendly, neighborhood bar with elevated bar food, but I can see how the casual ordering at the bar can be a wait during busy times. The menu is the typical seasonal menus that doesn't give a whole lot of explanation, so I can see people asking a lot of questions at the bar when ordering. Then if you "keep a tab open," that means having to get back in line if you want to add more food or drinks. But other than this odd concept, I would say the covered patio in the back is a fun, festive space and the drinks are decent. But the food is what surprises you, with simple dishes and ingredients that taste complex and multiple depths of flavors and textures. Like the roasted cauliflower I had, that came out looking nothing like cauliflower (maybe it was also because of the dim lighting) that was flavored with harissa and served with herby labneh and sunflower honey. I was getting an early dinner, so was looking for something that could be a main but the bigger dishes sounded heavy, so I just went with the garlic sausage, which was nicely done and was a fancified pork and beans. I really wanted to like this place--I love their sister restaurant, and the elements like the food, drinks, interiors and patio are all good, maybe even great. Unfortunately, the service is really quite horrible/awkward/unwelcoming and cancels out most of the good. Another reviewer mentioned that the self-service was cumbersome, and I have to agree. The few times I've gone, the line to get anything has been really long and prevents me from putting in new orders/asking for small things like more sauce for my fries. This is mostly due to the staff--they don't manage the crowd well. Most of the time they seem overwhelmed, but they also don't seem proactive about managing the line/talking to each other about what's going on. This leads to folks cutting each other in line and weirdly long wait times to get orders and minor requests in. Another reviewer also mentioned the bartenders chitchatting/not paying attention to folks despite a long line of people... I regret to say I've also seen that happen. And after placing your order at the bar, somebody unceremoniously dumps the food at your table and zooms away. The only way to get anything else you need is either to self-serve at a station that's a little tucked away/hard to spot or stand in the line again. Again, I feel like this would all be fine if this place were a dive bar--but very clearly they're trying to be an upscale place with their interiors/relatively pricey bar food, so it's a bit of a tough pill to swallow. I really hope they pay attention to some of this feedback--I think this place has the potential to be a great neighborhood spot and works out some of these service kinks. read more

This is a beautiful and aesthetically pleasing space for a date. I enjoyed the burrata with squash as it was well balanced and a large portion. Similarly, the steak was hearty and tender. The carrots had a great sauce and a little bite to them. The food is all slightly over salted. I was surprised that for the price point, you have to serve yourself (silverware, cups of water, etc). Met up with a friend on a not very busy night. The bar service only part kinda sucks so I could only imagine if it was a really busy night. It's kinda a thing in Portland now, so it's not that surprising, but notable on places to pick for future. The apps were good, but the fish we got was not edible, so the staff was kind enough to take it off the bill. But the annoying part was when we *stood in line for 10 min to pay* the bill was already rung up and charged to my card even though my friend and I were going to split what we ordered... so my friend had to Venmo me... not that big of a deal... but when I checked my account the next day I had 4 different charges from Bar Loon. 20,45,65 and 80$ charges. I went in the next day, because they don't have a phone number listed anywhere, and they said it was just pending and it would be fixed, but that took 5 days. Maybe I would go back in the summer time because I heard the patio was nice, but overall not impressed. *** update, so just read another review that Bar Loon is owned by the Bellwether *** I can walk there and the service is just about the same and I choose to go other places, so this is a top down management issue. read more

Such a great space, it's so warm and inviting, the bartenders are all lovely, the drinks are tasty (I've had the white Negroni and the tiny martini quite a few times), the wine selection is good, the food is SO delicious. The freaky flower cloud is cool. Everything is priced well and the portions are good but not overwhelmingly large, plus lots of gluten free options (thank you!). Really disappointing experience. Was excited to check this place out as I had a good time at their sister restaurant Bellweather Bar, but something feels lost here. I get that it's self-service so you order food/drinks at the bar, but with a larger group like what we had the concept feels lazy, it was really cumbersome to keep getting out of the booth to go up for the littlest things, I made 3 trips to get water while the staff chatted behind the bar and if you're going to put a $52 steak on the menu there should at least be a quality check from the staff but all they did was nonchalantly clear plates. The food was a huge disappointment, the Grilled Broccoli was actually rotten, I was aghast that they could serve what was clearly yellow, wilted expired broccolini for $13. Thankfully we opted for the smaller portion of the steak because that was not good either, it had a grey color and tasted like it was sous-vide or something without the proper sear. At least the fried wedges were good and the cocktails thankfully was better than the food. Very disappointing experience. read more
