This five-star review is mainly for the wonderful tour and consultation I received from Bar Lis managers Shelby and Cole! I was scouting locations for my upcoming birthday celebration, so one Wednesday night I decided to stop by Bar Lis and see the space for myself. When I arrived, the rooftop happened to be completely empty, which actually worked out perfectly because I was able to really see and appreciate the venue without all the usual noise and chaos of a busy night. That's when I met Cole, who gave me what felt like my own private VIP tour of the space! He took the time to walk me around, explain the different table packages and options, and discuss what might work best for my birthday. Shelby joined us shortly afterward, and they were both extremely helpful with their feedback and recommendations. I never felt rushed or pressured, which I really appreciated. I ultimately decided to celebrate at another venue, but NOT because I didn't like Bar Lis. The other venue simply had no minimum and made it easier for my guests to come and go throughout the night without potentially having to wait to get inside. Bar Lis is extremely popular, and I know there can sometimes be quite a line outside -- which says something about how popular this rooftop is! Even though I ultimately went in a different direction for my birthday, Shelby and Cole still left such a positive impression that I wanted to recognize them. Thank you, Shelby and Cole, for the helpful consultation, great recommendations, and my own little VIP sneak peek that Wednesday night! You both made the experience memorable and demonstrated exactly what great hospitality should look like. read more

I had an extremely disappointing experience at Bar Lis and would not recommend this place based on how my group was treated. We were initially charged $300 just to enter, by the bald black security in the front with no bottle or table service included. Once inside, when we attempted to go upstairs, security told us we would have to pay because we had 3 guys with us!!! We would have not been charged if it was only us girls. What made the situation even worse was watching other guests being allowed upstairs without being asked to pay the same additional fee. When I questioned why we were being treated differently, the security guard told us that if we weren't going to pay, we would have to "wait until he decided" to let us upstairs. I felt completely singled out and discriminated against, especially when we could clearly see that the same rules were not being applied to everyone. Despite everything that had already happened, we still ended up spending almost $1,000 on bottle service. After spending that amount, we were then told that we would not receive a sign because there was now supposedly a $1,000 minimum required to get one. This was especially frustrating because we had been at Bar Lis just ONE WEEK BEFORE, purchased a bottle for essentially the same price, and received a sign without any issue. There was no mention of a $1,000 minimum at that time. How does the policy suddenly change within one week, and why was none of this communicated before we spent our money? Between the $300 entry charge, being told to pay another $100 per person to go upstairs, and then spending almost $1,000 on bottle service only to be given a completely different explanation about their minimums, the entire experience felt misleading, inconsistent, and extremely unprofessional. This also did not feel like an issue with just one employee. Multiple employees were involved in the way the situation was handled, and management did nothing to make us feel that our concerns were being taken seriously. For a venue that presents itself as upscale, I expected transparency, professionalism, and consistent treatment of guests. Instead, we experienced unexpected charges, changing explanations, disrespectful treatment, and what I personally felt was discriminatory treatment. After spending that kind of money and being treated this way, I will absolutely not be returning. read more

The vibe, cheugy. Views were really nice on the terrace portion, but aside from that, it just felt sleezy. Bouncers. Probably the biggest stain on the carpet for this place. A couple were cool. But majority of roaming bouncers thought they were important. Just bulldozing their way with flashlights through groups of people, unapologetically, disregarding patrons conintually. The DJ (spotify playlist) playing was house mostly. I'm not a fan of mandatory tip amount, personally. Flat 20% "service fee," so no choice on tip, which isn't how tips work. Pass on this place. read more

Little do you know there is a place on Tuesday night that has live blues singers, and an amazing DJ for dancing! The website says no shorts and stricter attire, and reservations are suggested, but neither really applied. Adorable rooftop with a top-notch, charming waiter. Food and drinks were expensive but delicious, and they even surprised our 23-year-old son with a birthday treat. Such a fun spot for a special occasion! read more

I'm honestly disappointed. I had read other reviews about how great this place was and other reviews that weren't so great. I believed sometimes opinions don't matter, decided to try this myself since we were staying close by. Immaculate vibes, absolutely adorable and beyond chic. Everything was well designed and you can tell everything was meticulously place to curate the best ambience for what this place claims to be. Our server was nice, she was new. She was helpful! We had ordered some drink and just a little share something before we had to go to our show. Afraid, we didn't have enough time to try anything else on the menu, we thought of coming back. At first everything seemed great. Then came the drinks and the shares. Drink was salty... apparently they are aware the drink, la rose, would be "doing that salty thing", so maybe it isn't in my palate. I got another drink, that one was amazing. The came the burrata. For $23, you get the 1 whole slice of toast ( cut in half) and the cheese with the pesto. SUPER SALTY! I don't know what was happening but it seemed like they really wanted to make everything salty. So... ok fine. But with that being said, we each had once slice of bread, we ordered more bread ($4) for a slice cut in half.... I'm upset at the fact we received it 20 mins later with the bread burnt. read more

this happened months ago but i still think about it cause it left a bad taste in my mouth, never stepped foot in here because the bald security dude weird as hell, completely ignored me and the guy i was with and let a white woman pass with no issue. Super cute spot! It's a real nice set up inside! They have a dj going on & a little dance floor, some rooftop views, a beautiful looking bar. We had a girls night here & the bouncers were actually super friendly & sweet! There was one that was like 7 ft tall he was so kind & helpful, I was so shocked seeing someone that tall so we had a few laughs lol Another bouncer offered us some free drink tickets which was great!! But I will say there drinks are not good, idk maybe we didn't order the right drinks... we started off with a cucumber drink, the bartender said he could make it at my friends request & it was realllllly awful... I hated that we had to pay $20+ for that lol so next drink we decided to skip over that bartender & try a new one & got a different drink & it was just okay, nothing special, also wasn't the greatest. So they just need to start making better drinks here & this place would be perfect for a night out. The dj started slow but by our 2nd drink the music was flowing & started turning into great remixes! read more

This spot offers spectacular views of the city. It's located next to the rooftop pool on the top of The Hollywood Grande. They have umbrellas and sun shades, in case it gets too sunny. At night, there was always a line out the door, but we did get to experience brunch. For brunch, we got the chia pudding, pancakes, breakfast sandwich, and American breakfast. I loved the chia pudding. I'm going to see if I can recreate it at home. It was that good! The breakfast sandwich was pretty big and served with a side of crispy potatoes. The potatoes were really good. They were crispy, but not overly oily. The American breakfast plate was also plenty big. The pancakes were really good and came with freshly whipped vanilla cream. You can definitely share dishes and still be satisfied. read more

The bouncer named mark at the front was really rude. All I asked was how much longer it would take for me and my friends to get in since we were waiting 45 min and we saw how much tips he was accepting to let anyone who just walked to the front. and he called me annoying I wasn't even expecting to be let in instantly, but Mr D with the cowboy hat was really sweet and reprimanded the situation. The only reason why I'm giving this a 2 star was because of the exceptional service D gave, he was willing to hear me out and I really appreciate that. But in advance, I'm sorry for the 2 stars Mr D. read more

This probably isn't the most accurate review since I didn't actually eat or drink here, but I had to write about how nice this rooftop was! I was here for a birthday, and I almost didn't go due to sheer laziness, but I live about 3 blocks away so I really had no excuse not to go. Same side of the street as Mother Wolf, the entrance for Bar Lis is the elevator behind the velvet rope on the sidewalk. I was guided by a nice door guy who gave us access to the top floor. A host stand is right in front as you exit the elevator, and if you turn right from there, you see the fountain in the bar area. If you keep walking, you'll see seating and a dance floor, continuing around to the pool area (had you gone left at the host stand, you would have encountered this area first). Upon arriving early, it wasn't so busy and people were still eating dinner in the same room as the bar/fountain. About an hour later, it was packed! This was on a Saturday, so I shouldn't be surprised. Ended up leaving the party on the earlier side, but I certainly won't hesitate if someone else has their birthday here. read more

Jazz night is Tuesday! Beautiful location on the top of the Hollywood Grande Hotel (formerly the Thompson Hotel). Open-air view of the Hollywood Hills and Downtown LA. Picture the perfect California sunset as the backdrop whilst in a beautiful rooftop setting with delicious drinks, eye candy abounding and good vibes rolling. That's a good summation of my time at Bar Lis! I'm unsure of the dress code but definitely wear something cute or sophisticated. I'd hate to be underdressed here. You walk to the right of the hotel entrance and find a gentleman at the ready to whisk you inside to the elevators. Hop in and head to the rooftop where we were greeted by a beautiful, tall hostess with a smile. The hospitality here was certainly top notch. We were seated in direct view of the Hollywood hills sign and with perfect views of the sunset. While I want to believe every seat has a great view, we didn't even have to get up to take some amazing photos. A great place to catch up with friends or for an intimate date. Our server was beyond sweet and had great recommendations. Very short review here in that everything was pretty amazing and they are very accommodating. We had some table neighbors that seemed to be a bit more "hyper" than the vibe but it was non issue and handled well. The drinks were amazing, tasty, and potent. My favorite was definitely the Bonnie & Clyde, so give that a shot if you enjoy gin. I didn't use the restrooms but I wish I had to ensure it all matched the vibe they have going. Good addition to the circuit or to end the night. I definitely plan on returning! read more

I've been here twice now. I was not impressed the first time, but I decided to give it another try. Bar Lis thinks it's better than it is. The staff for sure is not up to par. The only possibility redeeming quality is its location/space. The space is nice. It's unfortunate the owners/staff have not figured out how to deliver quality service. The blond waiter (not a natural blond) could benefit from some customer service training (ongoing training). Sarcasm is a skill available to all gay men. I highly suggest making a reservation. We came here for a relatively early dinner at 6:45pm. It was still quite bright. You do get a good view of Hollywood. I suggest making a reservation for 7pm so you can catch the sunset better. Sunset is around 8pm during summer in LA. This is a roof-top French inspired restaurant, lounge and bar serving a mix of French and Southern California cuisine. For appetizers, we got the Dungeness Crab Cake and the Roasted Carrots. The carrots were cooked nicely and the sauce it came with (which was comprised of sumac yogurt, mint and almonds) exuded great minty flavor and a nice crunch. The crab cake was just ok. For the main courses, the Roasted Chicken came out surprisingly delicious. The exterior was crispy without being dry and the stung honey combined with the Jimmy Nardello Peppers gave this dish a delicious combination of sweet, spicy and savory. The portion was bigger than I expected. My partner got the Smashed Cheeseburger. That was pretty good too. The food, ambiance were both really good. Service was lacking. The servers are really attractive. I just wish they could be more attentive, then this place would deserve 5 star! This restaurant is located inside the Thompson Hotel. There is a side entrance for Bar Lis, and the area opens up for dancing on many nights after 10pm. read more

I honestly have no idea how this establishment is still open. After reading prior reviews, I can say with confidence that they are accurate--underage patrons are being let in. Security allegedly takes $100 and allows minors under 21 to enter. We went to celebrate my son's birthday, and the experience was ruined almost immediately. The security staff was extremely rude, and we ended up leaving altogether. There is absolutely no reason to treat paying customers poorly. Making an hourly wage doesn't justify acting entitled or disrespectful. Before even reading the reviews, I turned to my husband and said there was no way everyone inside was over 21--and unfortunately, I was right. Bar Lis is a beautiful venue, but the sound system is terrible and the management is even worse. I truly hope someone else considers buying this place and completely redoing it. It has so much potential, but it is being run very poorly. read more

Very cool rooftop bar with a great atmosphere. The space is stylish and lively, and the vibe really comes together at night. Drinks were good, and the staff was very nice and welcoming throughout the evening. I never expected my first visit to be such a disappointing experience. From the moment I walked in, the welcome downstairs was terrible. The Black woman at the front desk looked very well-groomed and stylish, but her attitude, facial expressions, and the way she treated us were extremely unprofessional. I genuinely felt judged and discriminated against, even though I was simply there with my partner and had done nothing inappropriate. When we went upstairs, the receptionist there was very kind and welcoming. Unfortunately, the staff member at the desk upstairs spoke to us in a rude and unfriendly manner. The tone of the conversation made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Because of the poor treatment, I decided to leave without using the service. I honestly don't know what kind of customer service this business is trying to provide. If the staff are too tired, unhappy, or unwilling to serve customers, perhaps they should take the time to rest before coming to work. Guests deserve to be welcomed with professionalism and respect, not made to feel like they are an inconvenience. Even the busboy's attitude did not improve the experience. From the moment we entered until the moment we left, the service was consistently disappointing. This was my first visit, and it will also be my last. To the Owner/Management, I am writing to formally express my concern regarding an upsetting and humiliating experience I recently had at your establishment. On Saturday, 5/30 I arrived at your venue with the expectation of enjoying an evening like any other patron. However, I was denied entry by a member of your door staff under circumstances that appeared arbitrary, discriminatory, and inconsistent with how other guests were being treated. While waiting in line, I observed multiple women being admitted without issue. When it was my turn, the doorman singled me out and refused to allow me entry. No reasonable explanation was provided, nor was I given any opportunity to address the concern. What made the situation particularly troubling was that I appeared to be the only woman in line subjected to this treatment. Based on the interaction, I was left with the strong impression that I was being judged and treated differently because of my physical appearance and personal attributes rather than any legitimate policy or behavioral concern. The experience was embarrassing, degrading, and emotionally distressing. Being publicly excluded while others around me were welcomed inside made me feel targeted and unfairly singled out. As a business that serves the public, I would hope that all guests are treated with professionalism, respect, and consistency. While establishments certainly have the right to enforce reasonable entry policies, those policies should be applied fairly and without discrimination. In this instance, the actions of your employee did not reflect those standards. I am requesting that you investigate this incident, review the conduct of the staff member involved, and provide clarification regarding the reason I was denied entry. I would also appreciate information about any measures your establishment takes to ensure that guests are not subjected to discriminatory treatment based on their appearance or other personal characteristics. I believe it is important for management to be aware of situations like this, as they can significantly impact a business's reputation and the public's trust in its commitment to fair and respectful treatment of all patrons. I look forward to your response and appreciate your attention to this matter. read more

Bar Lis looks like a vibe...and to be fair, it kind of is. The rooftop's got that whole "effortless glam" energy, nice lighting, people dressed like they're going somewhere. But once you're in, it starts to feel more style than substance. We were there for one of our girlfriend's birthdays and did bottle service thinking it'd guarantee a better experience. Nope. Seating was super limited, even with a reservation, and it felt like we were fighting for space most of the night. Definitely not the chill, celebratory energy we were hoping for. You're basically paying premium prices to hover near a couch. It got packed fast and not in the fun, buzzing kind of way, more like sardines. If you're into shoulder-to-shoulder rooftop scenes and don't mind standing all night, cool. Otherwise, maybe not the move. Drinks were decent, music was fun, crowd was dressed! but overall it just didn't live up to the hype. Pretty place, mid experience. Probably great for a quick cocktail and a photo, but not worth the bottle service splurge. read more

There's something about Bar Lis that just hits different. Maybe it's the rooftop breeze mixed with French Riviera energy. Maybe it's the way the night lights hit just right over the Hollywood skyline. Or maybe... it's because for the past 3 years, this place has been my go-to sanctuary for good drinks, better people, and the best nights. From the very first night I pulled up to now, Bar Lis has never lost its touch. The moment you take that elevator ride up, you know you're stepping into something elevated--literally and vibe-wise. The decor is effortlessly aesthetic, the crowd has just the right mix of industry, mystery, and style, and the music? Don't even get me started. DJ's like Skemaddox, Francesca Cloud, Hamoodie, and Awsumo have spun soundtracks to some of my favorite memories. Huge shoutout to the whole Bar Lis crew--true professionals who make the chaos look smooth. Rob and Max behind the bar always come correct with top-tier drinks (and somehow even better energy). And managers Cole and Jeff? They make sure the whole room feels like it's on their radar. That extra level of attention makes all the difference. Even the few times I haven't gone for a Saturday night outing, but rather to catch a glass of wine & amazing food over the sunset, it's never been anything short of amazing. One thing I've always loved is that it's just as much a club as it is a lowkey bar. You can get your ears blown out by the DJ in the dark under the lights--or step out onto the patio for some air and low light, where conversations slow down and the city feels a little quieter. Bar Lis isn't just a lounge--it's a rhythm. Nights move with a certain electricity up there. You don't plan the moments, they just happen. One drink becomes three. A glance becomes a great memory. It's the kind of place where time feels suspended, like the skyline's holding its breath just long enough for something unforgettable to unfold. After 3 years, this place still feels like the spot. Never stale. Never overhyped. Just consistently Bar Lis--exactly what LA nightlife should be. 5/5 every time. See you this weekend. read more

If you like waiting in line for no reason, this is your place. I had a social event here last night and they would not allow some attendees up even though there weren't a lot of people and the event was ending soon. Although they do not post this in their hours, so I'm not sure how true it is, from 9:30-10 pm they do not allow people up. It's a very strange way to run a business, but if it works for them I'm sure things won't change. Additionally some of the staff were very rude when we tried to explain the situation. Their attitude was very haughty, which is not a good look. Once we were finally allowed to go up the place was dead. Some of the people from the event left immediately due to the miscommunications at the line, and some left because the overall vibe was very off. They don't allow you to drink outside, so if you're feeling like taking the scene in while sipping a cocktail you're out of luck. Maybe things change for the better, such as improved communications between staff and guests, rethink that no drinks outside policy, and let go of a silly rule that deceives people into thinking this place is more popular than it really is. Best of luck to the business, I hope this review helps in some way. For potential patrons, there are much more fun and better places in LA to go.
