This is a great bar. I've been here before but tonight it hit me in the form of a revelation: this bar is legit. It walks the line between dark and cozy and open air sidewalk facing with a back room to boot. The beer list has simple and succinct yet tantalizing descriptors that leave you no choice but to want to try almost everything. One of the best selections of beer in the area. Hands down. Possibly the best, but there's competition -- Strong Place, Brazen, etc. Prices are good. Especially the 2 cans for $5 during happy hour -- my go to choice is Heinnieweisse. In the warmer months, sitting by the open windows is great. Friendly bartenders. Cool crowd, which varies from neighborhood newcomers like me and old-timers, who've lived in the area for decades. If you're lucky enough to talk to some of them, they have some great stories. While I think the place is great, the main drawback for me are the dogs. Sorry - I get enough of them with the poo and pee smell on Smith Street. Some people give an extra star for the dogs. I take the star away. Keep Rover and Fido at home. Dogs are like children, except they bark and occasionally attack you (although I guess kids can as well). I should know -- I have quite the gnarly bite scar on my calf -- and it's not from a shark. They poop, as was my experience about a year ago when a dog took a giant liquid shit inside nearby Angry Wade's because he ate too much free popcorn. On a recent visit to Bar Great Harry, I was chilling having my happy hour beers. People next to me had their large dog, who was obviously agitated and decided to plop down under the bench -- right behind my leg. Annoying yappy dog comes in with master and this dog flips a shit. Goes somewhat nuts, immediately gets up from under my legs, and starts barking. Everyone turns around. Owner starts yelling at dog. I don't care for that. Dogs aside, great bar. If you're like me and you want to avoid the dog rush, go later at night. read more

It's just the best place to get a beer in the neighborhood. So easy. So many choices. $5. There's not much more to say. The selection is NOT budweiser, heineken, and amstel. It is so much better than that. I tried the Saison VOS - awesome, and the alcohol content was equally as awesome. There was an IPA Wall... something? Whatever the full name was, it's delicious and spicy and refreshing. Again, $5. I just signed a lease a few blocks away and I am looking forward to being a regular. read more

I was quite pleased with the tap selection and enjoyed a Dogfish Midas Touch. Luckily, we scored a table after hovering about for 15 minutes or so (not bad for a Saturday night). The vibe was spirited without getting too crazy. I may be biased in my esteem for this bar, as we share the same initials. Not that the "dive bar with good beer" trope is exactly unique in Brooklyn, but Bar Great Harry is the kind of space where you can settle down with friends and enjoy something good. The beer selection is great, and there are always a few oddballs if you want to be adventurous (the last time I was there, it was a beer that tasted like curry - not the best beer experience I've ever had). The space itself is nice and open - big bar, a few tables, plenty of floor space (the front always feels very spacious to me, even when it's packed). There is no kitchen - this is a bar, and nothing else - but the bartender is always ready with a handful of delivery menus if you're really hungry. read more

I am blessed to have such a good beer bar close to my residence. A constantly changing and seasonal tap selection, low lit, knowledgeable bartenders, and a variety of cask ale offerings. The weekends are fun here, as the crowd is rather dynamic (women's rugby team one night, a bunch of young hipsters another night), but I find my most pleasant times here are during the middle of the week, when it's quiet, and it's just a beer and a friend keeping me company. If you have any interest in craft beer and live in the carroll gardens/cobble hill/park slope area, you'd be a fool to not check out BGH. read more

It takes a real hearty bartender to handle forty plus taps crammed behind the bar especially with all of the chalkboard maintenance this incites and keeping the lines clean and changing of kegs and acting annoyed when people inquire about tasting a beer they cannot pronounce. Yikes. But, come to think of it, I suppose it's even harder to offer a concise and conscientious roster of brews that will satisfy the wallets and pallets of brewneophytes and hopaficionados alike. As a beer lover this place is heavenly. A ton of beers from all over the world to choose from and a list that seems to get updated monthly if not weekly! Every time I come here I look forward to seeing what's on the menu. All the bartenders here are so friendly and helpful, especially Justin and Jill who are some of the best bartenders I have ever been served by in ANY bar in NYC. I just wish they worked more day shifts! The atmosphere is consistently warm and the crowd always friendly, at least when I am here which is usually a weekday or weeknight. They even have a few classic style pinball machines in the back! As a resident of downtown Brooklyn all my life, having a bar like this in my own backyard is phenomenal. read more

Bar great Harry used to be a good bar 10 years ago over the last year it has gone all downhill. With the addition of a bartender named aerien this bars service has hit rock bottom to say the least. This used to be my favorite bar. It was my neighborhood watering hole. Now it is Torture to visit and the bartender goes out of his way to Excommunicate the locals that visit. read more

When I first walked in to the bar I was greeted by a giant white polar bear of a dog and then secondly by a golden retriever who couldn't stop wagging its tail. I knew I was in good hands. The bartender was friendly, I was served right away, and the beer was cheap. I don't really ask for a lot in a bar these days, but my expectations were met above and beyond. We used to be regulars to BGH every weekend in the warm months and brought our dog to enjoy some time socializing. Unfortunately, dogs are no longer welcome, and combined with the loss of our favorite bartender and Narragansett in a can, we just aren't feeling the warm vibes anymore. Plus, this used to be one of the few bars without a TV, now there's a permanent flatscreen on the wall where the finely crafted chalk drawings once were. Guess it's time to move on to a new hangout. Just a very off putting experience. Bar tender in a bad mood. I mean it's one thing to not be hospitable sense of customer service and it's another to just take out your problems on the customer. Was waiting to checkout Bar Great Harry until I realized "Oh wait I was already here before, really really drunk". It's that moment of clarity where everything comes back all at once. How can I forget my first time here. I stumbled in here after a long night of boozing. Everyone was having a great time. Beers on tap were great. The place was good. I was having a blast playing with the pinball machines in the back. Then all of a sudden two men wearing black and white striped shirts, derby hats and handkerchiefs over their faces came in trying to rob the place. After everyone dumped their belongings into their over sized bags, I sprung into action. I took out the first robber with a swift punch to the face. The second one pulled out his gun and started shooting. I avoided the bullets Neo style, but much cooler than Keanu Reeves. Then gave the guy a flying bicycle kick which sent him into the Gowanus River. The girls jumped over me but informed them that I needed to protect my city elsewhere. Then flew into the sky, finding someone else who needed me elsewhere. I'll be honest it was really fuzzy that night. I'm 100% sure everything I said about everyone having a good time, the beers on tap were excellent, there are pinball machines in the back and how it was solid place, is spot on. As for everything else it could be some form or variation, as I admitted I wasn't completely sober. I mean for all I know I could have blacked out and proceeded to stumble home. Whatever the case is, this is a great spot to get some awesome beers on tap if you're on Smith Street. read more

This may be the greatest bar in the history of bars. I am an unabashed dog person. The neighborhood is full of them, and this seems to be the ultimate neighborhood bar. Mostly filled with locals, featuring a *great* beer selection on cask and tap, they allow dogs inside as long as they stay on leash, and they'll let you order food in from the nearby restaurants. We just spent the afternoon with a half-dozen dogs and easily as many beers, ordered in a pizza to cap off the night, and we really couldn't be happier. Friendly bartender who came around to say hi to our pup every little while, great beers at a decent price, a friendly atmosphere, and a chance to get out and bring our dog along. Seriously -- what could be bad about that. Don't like dogs for some reason? Totally fair, but go to some other bar. This one's for us. read more

Excellent divey but homey little place. Lots and lots of craft beer taps. We came here on a sunny afternoon with our Thrillist beer passport and, having two, asked for two flights, which meant we got to choose eight different beers to put in our flight. In the end, it worked out great, but the bartender did not know what the beers on tap tasted like and ended up giving us countless tasters for us to make our own decisions. She said there is usually a menu describing each beer and they were without that today. IMO, a bartender should know what's on tap. But still, it was a great time, and the salt and pepper chips they sell at the bar can't be beat! A great little place to relax on a hot day. read more

Had quite a drunken night with my sister, her boyfriend, and some friends and couldn't have been happier to stumble home a few blocks. It gets pretty busy on weekends (and apparently on weekdays too), so you might have to fight for a table, but once you're sitting it has a great vibe. read more

Another divey bar with a less than divey feel, thanks to open patio doors and a back area that keeps its stocking door ajar. Local vibe all around, with a beer selection my co-workers liked and a bunch of jovial old dudes going solo at the bar who chatted me up (in a non-skeezy / howdy-neighbor kind of way). somewhere between the board games on the shelf by the window seats, the excellent pint of beer i drank, and the cute little doggies chilling out inside with their owners - BGH and i fell in love. the bartenders i've seen there have always been quite helpful & the carefully selected beer list changes often- all widely varied beers from pilsners to red ales to dark brews - all roughly around $6/ pint. i was even happier when the bartender said it was cool to bring in outside food (such as ordering from zaytoons across the street - yum). there's even a small room in the back housing two excellent pinball games - Iron Man and The Sopranos. so go to BGH -- drink, eat, play Yahtzee, pet someone's puppydog, play some pinball! there's an ATM on site, so you'll never have to leave! well...eventually, but still... read more
