I really, really want to love this place. The idea of a good local eatery is very appealing. I have been here several times with the mind set of 'I'm sure it will get better' but it doesn't. Last night my wife and I had a reservation for 8.30. We arrived and were seated, drinks ordered $10.00 each for two glasses of prosecco. We ordered the sautéed broccolini ($11) Spicy cucumber salad ($5) and the bread ($5). Food arrived. Broccoli was way under cooked, so much so we just ate the tips. Cucumber salad was descent (slices of cucumber with a dressing). Bread had not arrived... Mains dishes came. Wife had the Crab Salad from the fresh sheet (missing the dressing) I had the Ginger Hoisin Prawns ($25) Wife asked for salad dressing and was given some. I sat and wondered how 6 prawns (still with the tail on - why do restaurants do this? They must know I'm going to pick the whole thing up and eat it. Who wants to mess around pulling off tails?) a cup of rice and some mushrooms and vegetables cost twenty five dollars. My food was bland, under seasoned, over cooked. As we were coming to an end the bread arrived. I appreciated the 'we are sorry it late, the bread is on us" however the bread was so hot it felt like it had been fired in a kiln. Like I say, I really want to like this place, but it is so hit and miss and seems expensive for the quality of the cooking and the actual food. I'm sure I will forget this experience in a few weeks and give it another go, but please Bar Dojo, just once I would like to come to your restaurant and leave feeling like it was good value instead of I should have gone to the store, spend my money on quality produce and cooked my own food. read more

We had dinner here couple weeks ago and I was surprised how good the food was. Hubby and I shared the crispy Calamari, Snap Pea Lemon Risotto and Ahi Tuna tacos. The food was deliciously good. I would definitely come back here again and try the Crab Poke bowl. Update: Came back to try the Crab poke bowl, it was delicious. We love to come back here and try different menu items. My boyfriend and I decided to come here on a Sunday night for happy hour. We made reservations so we could come in right when they opened, and we were one of the first people there. Within 10 minutes, the bar filled up, and other parties started coming in. Since it was Sunday Taco Night, they had their pork belly tacos for $10. Super juicy, and mouth watering. You must try it! It's delicious. I would definitely come here again just for that. From the happy hour menu, we ordered the crispy dojo wings. I was a bit shocked and disappointed when I saw what was on the plate... 4 small wings for $7.50??? I was expecting them to taste amazing for the price, but that wasn't the case at all. The Dojo burger: it was alright, but I wouldn't pay $18 for it again. It wasn't as juicy as I would like, and nothing stood out to me about it. There's plenty of places with better burgers for a fraction of the price. Passionfruit creme brûlée: I actually loved it! If you're not into tart, this probably isn't the dessert for you. The chocolate cookie gives it a good balance. Overall, this place isn't too bad. The service was great! I would just say that the food a little overpriced for what you're getting, but I would come here again to try out their pork belly nachos. read more

I know this place doesn't look like much from the outside but trust me.. If you're looking for Drinks and snacks, this place is it! Small plates and cocktails are really the standout for bar dojo in my opinion. The chicken lettuce wraps and the salt & pepper calamari are two must try items! And the Orange blossom is a perfect cocktail for the Gin lover in your life. Service here is always very good. But the bartender is the best. So i always try to sit at the bar. Legend has it that the chef got so tired of making the pork belly nachos that he took them off the menu. Luckily, the people wouldn't stand for it, and they're back! Bar Dojo is a hidden gem - it looks like nothing from the outside, but stepping through the door you will quickly be impressed by a classy ambiance and magnificent aromas. Unless you didn't make a reservation, in which case only disappointment awaits you. I don't love the entire menu, but what they do good they do SOOO DAMN good. The nachos are a spiritual experience, the wings are delectable, and the ahi tacos are epic. My wife adores the fritters. The best happy hour in Edmonds, hands down. I've had Bar Dojo bookmarked for awhile now since I live near Edmonds, and thanks to Seattle Restaurant Week, my family and I finally gave this place a try! Bar Dojo's interior isn't that big, so I would definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time if you want to be seated right away. I didn't personally do the SRW menu, but did take bites out of my brother's and his fiancé's plates (lol) and I have to say that everything was really good! I ordered the pork belly tacos and it was so yummy! The pork belly wasn't too fatty and the pickles and greens really balanced out the flavors. Overall, I really did enjoy my experience at Bar Dojo! Everyone from the hostess to our server was so friendly! However, I am giving this place 4/5 because of the timing of our food. They could've brought out our food faster, but it's only a small complaint. Definitely give Bar Dojo a try if you're into Asian fusion cuisine! read more

I ordered the poke bowl for pick up. Never had it before and wanted to try it. Yelp had it at $19 and I didn't even question it and called in the order. When I got there, the bill was actually for $35!! Luckily it was worth it!! I just never would've ordered something I've never had, at $35... to go! Lol. Ambitious asian fusion in the Five Corners area just up from the Edmonds bowl. This is a good high-traffic spot, but until now there hasn't been a nice place since I've lived here. Dojo takes care of that. You park in a strip mall parking lot, but you walk through enough nice decorations inside the door that you're very much in their space by the time you sit down. There are a dozen small plates and maybe half a dozen entrees. About 75% of the menu is seafood, and there are Japanese touches on many of the dishes. You get a little dish of garlic-fried edamame complimentarily before your drinks even arrive. We had mixed tempura (broccoli, squash, and avocado served with three different dipping sauces) and a mixed crudo plate (sake-cured salmon, tempura spring onion, one oyster, and a scallop carpaccio) for apps. Both very good, very addictive. We had scallops in a rough salad and salmon crusted with turmeric and cayenne for entrees, and both were fantastic again. Nothing ever tasted fishy, and everything was always exactly at temp. Chocolate mousse with coarse marmalade and sweet orange syrup for dessert. The wine list is a couple columns, but well edited. A few beers, a few house cocktails. Full bar. They know how to catch all tastes without piling pages onto the menu here. The service is ultra-professional, relaxed, friendly, and cool. Everything here is just the right tone--you eat really well without feeling fussy, you feel really relaxed and welcome without it being loud. They present a great aesthetic everywhere from the foyer to the dessert spoon. read more

It was a long day, trying to negotiate the price of a car from Magic Toyota (we didn't end up buying here), and we were really tired. Tired and hungry. Sad from the attempt, we came here, after I saw the good recommendation from my buddy Sally C. So what stood out? It's in a strip mall, but that shouldn't be any surprise, because some of the best food, comes from the smallest shops. What we had was probably finer dining, fusion to be sure. It was Asian inspired, and negatives we saw for the cost of the meal, was quickly overcome with the proportions and taste. The environment was clean, intimate, and probably a great place for families with some disposable income. What we had? We had Braised Beef, and Red Curry Noodle. My girlfriend's meal, was full of beefy goodness, flavors were there, and seasoned well. It wasn't salty, as some dishes like hers could get. The Curry Noodle was good, it was full flavor also, nothing especially unique, but tasty. The portions were rather large, and we walked out full and satisfied. We opened with a Seared Ahi, which was decent size, but I would have wanted a little more on my plate. Overall, a great eating experience, and worth the time. Others have noted the happy hour, and I have yet to try it... which I will be back to try. read more

Recently, I went to Bar Dojo for a bite or two or three. I agree with many of the other reviewers; the strip mall location is unassuming but the inside is not what I expected. The space is used well and it's clear to me that they have a local following. I was one of the first people there but it filled up quickly. The prices are a bit high considering the location and value for the dishes. My favorite dish of the day was the ahi poké tacos. The fish was marinated (which I love) and it was placed in small fried wonton shells. Brilliant! The slightly sweet marinade was complimented by the slaw and a bit of spice. It was a bit "wet" for my liking from the juice dripping from the tacos but it was a very minor thing. I could eat those all day long. The biggest surprise of the day for me was the avocado rice. I ordered it because it sounded interesting. I was blown away! The flavor of the avocado infused the rice and overall it was a mild, smooth experience. I was disappointed with the chicken wings. For $12 a serving, I was expecting something close to the best wings I'd ever eaten. Not the case. They were forgettable. There are plenty of places to get better wings for a decent price. If you have kids, rest assured they have a kid's menu that satisfied my picky eater. He had a beef slider and fries. Hard to go wrong with that. For dessert I had the lemongrass crème brûlée. The lemongrass added an unexpected component to one of my favorite desserts. When I eat brûlée, I'm always looking for the right consistency and they nailed it here. The candied lemon wheels stole the show! Sweet, tart, and carmelized, it was the perfect topper for this dish! Overall, I'm glad I went. I'd like to try some other dishes on my next visit. My husband and I spent date night here recently. It was pretty much amazing. We skew more hole-in-the wall eatery than big chains because the food is the real deal. Living in the 'burbs, (particularly the Edmonds type 'burbs) it's often hard to find places to get excited about that don't require a trip on the freeway. We started with drinks, him the Sensi (men and their bourbon) and me the Dragon's Fire. I was skeptical about crispy shallot on my cocktail glass but it worked. Fiery tequila is pretty damn awesome. We had the deep fried avocado and the ginger salad. We ate them all. (He doesn't like avocado... which I guess means I ate the entire plate of deep fried avocado.) They were tasty. We ordered the grilled short ribs and the braised beef noodles. Here's where sh*t got real. The beef. The beef is like butter. Order the beef. Yes, it's in a strip mall. Yes, it's locally owned and will cost you more than pho (that's an absurd comparison.) But the interior is cozy, the service is great, the people are nice, the drinks are stiff and the beef, it's like butter. read more

When the folks were helping us they were super friendly and nice but would vanish for crazy amounts of time. They happily split up our checks but took an insane amount of time to do so and the restaurant was practically empty. Came here impulsively after hearing about it from a friend's coworker and I'm so happy I did! The menu was so fun and I love when the menu makes it hard to decide what delicious option you want the most. There were multiple times when I had to have the waitress choose for me because I just couldn't decide. I'm obviously going to have to keep coming back because there are so many things I still want to try! Wow. Hello, Bar Dojo... how is it possible we have not met? You are so close to my house, sometimes I mistakenly think I am in the middle of a food desert... until I found you. Tracy, Eric and I decided to have a spontaneous dinner out after I saw Bar Dojo pop up on yelp (how it did not come up in prior searches baffles me). The meal was incredible. I pretty much inhaled my dinner. We started with the veggie tempura (came with three different delicious dipping sauces), I had the lemongrass chicken (OMG, seriously? Did I die and gone to heaven), and Tracy and Eric had the black cod (melt in your mouth goodness smothered in gorgeous flavors). That avocado rice... man, I can swim in that stuff. I must have said "oh my god, this is sooo good" at least 10 times during the meal. I might even go out on a limb and say that it's the best restaurant in the Seattle area. It's been open for a year now, and I think it an atrocity that I've only just now discovered it, having gone to the gym directly across the street for over a year. It's just in such a bad location, but you bet you that I will be sending everyone and their brother there from now on. read more

EVERYTHING we ate was AAAAAHHHMAZING. The three of us are officially stuffed. I'm from California, where most restaurants serve some kind of Asian fusion. Bar Dojo does it right, and does it well. Our culinary journey started off with incredibly flavored homemade pork dumplings which are better than my mom's (I almost never say that). We had to get Grandma's beef noodle soup because this dish was Bar Dojo's inspiration. I loved the spicy flavorful broth and chewy noodles. The beef was tender and fell apart in my mouth. My dad loves beef noodle soup and I'm certain he'd approve. Pork belly tacos are huge in so cal right now and Bar Dojo's do not disappoint! I must say they're the most interesting and creative pork belly tacos I've ever had. Crispy chicken wings were probably the best chicken wings ever. They're perfectly seasoned, perfectly fried (not greasy), and super juicy and moist. I really enjoyed the dashi broth in the spicy pork belly noodles. WOW! The flavor was really different from any ramen I've had before and the pork belly just melts in your mouth! Spiced rubbed lamb riblets were cooked to perfection. I liked the middle eastern flavoring and could taste cumin and coriander, which when well with the curried potatoes. I was getting full at this point, and wish I had more space to eat more riblets... Shitake miso risotto...too stuffed to enjoy! My bf and friend liked it. :) Smoked tea chocolate mousse is really decadent...ssssooo good. I pretty much cleaned this plate up. WOWOWOWOWOW! Black sesame affogato! I can't get over how fantastic this dessert was! MUST TRY!! You can taste the freshness of the black sesame gelato. LOVE IT! Bar Dojo is a MUST TRY! Maybe it depends on the day/time/setting but we had an outdoor table with a mostly empty restaurant (got there when they opened), a sweet and lovely server, and the food was Oh. My. Glob. It was so good!!! I got the salmon mango quinoa salad special and it was amazing. The salmon was perfectly cooked with the lightest crispy outer skin. The combination of flavors and textures was so great and my wine was the perfect pair. The Loco moco bowl was the perfect level of lightly lightly spicy that didn't build and was so filling and savory. We are completely obsessed! I should start with the admission that I don't do spicy very well and avoid it whenever I can. I'd actually give Bar Dojo 4-1/2 stars but since that isn't an option and the food was very good, I give it a 5. My wife and I went last night. We started with the dumplings and they were salty and spicy. I ate one, my wife 3 and said they were very good. For the entree she had the cod and I the crab and poke bowl, both very good. I did request "zero spicy, or as close as you can come" for the bowl and they complied. For dessert I forget what they call them, we had the donuts and 3 dipping sauces and they were excellent. Food and service were very good. Yes it's pricy but worth it. We'll be back. read more

Strip-mall excellence! Great food, keen staff, surprisingly nice ambiance, good flavors. Asian fusion deliciousness like red curry soup with tempura and meaty shrimp on the surface, and tongue-tingling flavors throughout. Lime-chili chicken wing appetizers were almost a meal in themselves and deliciously crispy and flavorful. Tempura plate had 3 wonderful dipping sauces to keep you wanting more. Honestly for this review I don't even know where to start! The pictures of the food at this restaurant does not do this place justice! Let's put it this way, my brother just sat here and said "I have never ate nachos with chopsticks!" My brother and I heard great things about this place and had to come check it out. We sat at the bar ordered some drinks and ordered the Pork Belly Nachos, Avocado Rice (That the bartender said could literally "keep the lights on in this restaurant"), and the Pork Kurobuta Dumplings. The Pork Belly is unreal tasty, heaven in your mouth! The menu is a bit pricey but totally worth it. This place is great for dates and I will be back.... read more

I went to Bar Dojo in the Five Corners neighborhood for a surprise birthday dinner on 9/6/13. I went in absolutely clueless - didn't check out their website or any previous reviews written up about the restaurant. Observations: We were lucky also since we were able to be seated on a Friday evening without a reservation. The dining room and bar was packed - clearly a much sought out neighborhood find located in a strip mall. We were there for nearly three hours, so plenty of opportunity to check out the vibe and atmosphere. There was a mix of couples, groups, and families. What was nice was that the overall din was pleasant - no distracting TV sets, no obnoxious restaurant music, nothing was loud. One could actually have a relaxed conversation. Front of the house staff was very pleasant and welcoming. Points to our wait person since she was able to convey enthusiasm about the menu and the chef's vision. She worked the dining room well, never flustered and never intrusive. That's a fine balance that she's clearly mastered. Timing on apps were fine, but really off once it was time for main entrees and desserts. Most likely because the place was slammed which probably backed up the tickets in the kitchen. Usually I don't comment on the flatware and dishes, but I really liked the modern look and feel. Really worked well with the inventive Asian fusion menu. Food: Complimentary edamame with crispy garlic (shared) - I like the spin on the garlic versus the usual salt crystals. Vermicelli Salad $7 (eaten as an entrée) - great presentation and flavor, but wasn't fond of the hardness of the noodles. I gave up on the chopsticks and ate most of it with a fork. (Disclaimer - I had a very late lunch, so didn't have enough room to try a plate or noodle entrée. However, their listed shared plates are ample to have as an entree) Mixed Tempura $9 (shared) - had fried avocado, delicata squash, and broccoli. The three sauces were ginger, spicy ketchup, and ponzu. The avocado was interesting - creamy. I liked the squash in manageable portions. Fried the inside of my mouth with broccoli, but that's my fault for wanting to gobble it up immediately when it was served piping hot. Flat Iron Steak $25 (entrée) - again great presentation with the steak, sautéed mushrooms and broccoli. Clean plate, so I'm assuming it was tasty. Braised Beef Noodles $14 (entrée) - nice presentation and with extra chili sauce to adjust the heat. Served with short rib, a braised egg, bok choy, and chilis. Dining companion had to fish out all the Sichuan chilis and commented on the broth was a bit too salty for her liking. Screw Pine Brulee $8 (shared dessert) - Pandan leaf infusion was subtle. Didn't really like the unevenness of the custard texture and temperature. One dining companion said the torched top was burnt and the strawberry garnish was way too tart. I liked the honey tuiles having eaten one of the two garnishes. Smoked Tea Chocolate Mousse $8 (shared dessert) - Again, the smoked tea infusion was subtle. Presentation was more detailed with the added chocolate cigarette and sesame seed brittle. I was unsure with the sweet sauce. Too much mandarin orange confit, but then maybe it was to be eaten as a foil to counteract the sweetness. I would have preferred less of it and maybe just a few slivers of candied orange peel. The mousse itself came across like a giant chocolate ganache truffle with a tough outer skin. But then it was well savored by one dining companion who enjoys chocolate plus tart/sour notes. Overall a great Edmonds find similar in spirit to Five and Epulo. I also liked the fact when I later looked at their website, the chefs are local and seem to mesh very well with as a team. Because the food came across as inventive, I will probably return again and try other things on the menu. And definitely with an empty stomach! read more

The atmosphere here is nice but a bit loud because it is a small space with many tables. The service was slow, took 15 minutes to get our appetizer and 5 min later our waitress comes back saying she forgot our edamame. Took at least 40 minutes before our food was served. Since this place does say small dishes and fusion I was expecting the food to be as good as the restaurants in downtown and the service to be a little faster. The food did look really appetizing but lacked flavor in taste. I ordered Sapporo clams and mussels and it came out in a small pot. It did look really yummy at first but then I noticed 2/4 pieces of bread were burnt. When I tasted the sauce it just tasted like bland coconut milk. The clams lacked flavor like they were missing something, overall was like clams and mussels in bland coconut milk. It is an entrée, I just wish they served it with something more fulfilling not just 4 pieces of thin bread. At the end I was still hungry and felt like I had a light snack. For the price they charge for these dishes I would expect better service and food than this.
