Accidentally found this restaurant, while walking and looking for a quick dinner. There were stairs outside going down, underground. We walked in and got seated immediately. The vibe was very interesting. It was very cool and dark. Our waitress was great. She had great recommendations. The food took a while to come out. The skewers were very spicy, but the meat was very tender. The smokey drink was defiantly very strong. I recommend getting the Savannah Sunset. It was very good! Everything else was delicious! The ambiance here is second to none. They have ostriches, boars, elephants, deers, crocodiles, hunting spears, etc. The drinks were inconsistent. I loved the Tamarind Martini. I couldn't bring myself to sit and have a drink here because, to me, it feels the owner and think tanks behind the creation on Baobab Lounge have terribly missed the mark. Baobab- short translation: tree of life, is an "African" themed restaurant. That's already an issue. Africa is a continent with about 50+ different countries. That hundred, if not thousands, of different cultures, languages, dialects, experiences, and people. The second issue I had was with the ostentatious display of African art, masks, and taxidermy. What is the direction? Who is the target audience? What region are you trying to showcase? More importantly, were the people who actually identify as part of that region included in the creation of this place? Baobab honestly gives off an air of colonizer and culturally ignorant. What an unfortunate addition to a highly tourist area. Shame on everyone who chooses to not understand how off putting this place is. There are plenty of other cultural emersion experiences in the Savannah area that have been cultivated by people of the respective cultural decent. It's 2023- If you're going to do something like this, do it right. read more

We absolutely loved Baobab Lounge, which we discovered while walking around near the J.W. Marriott. Summary: Absolutely loved this place. It is a vibe, and I appreciated that the many different pieces of art and other items from across Africa came together nicely--it didn't feel kitschy. We ordered quite a few things, and everything was great. The Frikkadel (lamb meatballs) were excellent, so much so that we ordered two dishes. The Biltong Hunt Board, a charcuterie/cheese/fruit board, was substantial. The Harissa steak flatbread was a crowd pleaser, and the Muhammara was the lighter dish sans meat that we needed to balance everything out. Also, Josh the bartender Josh is fantastic! He is everything you would want in a staff member--friendly, knowledgeable, engaging. This place feels like a hidden gem. Hopefully the next time I come to Savannah, it won't be overrun with people so we can still snag a table! read more

I've found my way through the doors of this establishment a handful of times at this point and I'm never disappointed. I'm a bourbon guy and they have an excellent selection. I will tell you that the Nyati drink is exquisite. One of my favorite drinks I've encountered in my travels across the Southeast. You can sub your favorite bourbon so don't be afraid to ask. I went Eagle Rare which is surprisingly available in this area. Hector is an expert mixologist. Great drinks. Go see him. And by all means please look around. The entire bar and area outside (inside, you'll see what I mean) is icing on the cake. Almost everything around you is part of a museum. So unique. Pricey but you're in Savannah soooo live it up. An African-themed bar located in the Deep South? YES! Never a fan of J.W's, this was a pleasant surprise. The decor includes items from the collection of Richard Kessler-owner of the property. For food, the portions are that of a tapas bar, leaving you the chance to sample many of the items on the menu. We tried the boerewors, a typical sausage I've had in Cape Town. Extremely flavorful with yummy spices I couldn't define, and when paired with pickled veggies, a real flavor explosion. We also shared the beef pies, which came with 3 decadent homemade pies and a green paste that was flavorful and fresh. Again, the spices were amazing. We also shared the hummus, made with red lentils and whole chickpeas which created a smooth, crunchy mouthfeel. Served with a fresh piece of African flatbread (a cross between a flour tortilla and naan), we couldn't have asked for a better culinary experience. The drinks were imaginative, freshly made with bar-made mixes and like our meal, very inexpensive. The two of us left with full stomachs, a nice buzz and all for $63. read more

Wow this cocktail lounge is SO unique! I loved the African theme-raw and mesmerizing, and very beautiful and upscale. The decor is seriously a work of art in and of itself. The vibe is just there! Service was amazing, we only had cocktails. I was able to sample a few martinis and all of them were amazing! This is a BEAUTIFUL cocktail and wine bar which offers some amazing African-styled small bites.  Service was outstanding! This restaurant is covered from head to toe in beautiful African art which serves as the perfect backdrop for your dining experience. We ended up leaving earlier than planned because the guy was causing a scene. This was the second time I came here and the first time was definitely better. 10/10 would recommend this place! It is tucked away in the garden district and we randomly happened upon this bar but it is a MUST SEE while in Savannah . This was the most memorable eating experience that I've had in Savannah. Amazing food, craft cocktails and South African wine. They have this really cool wine cellar in the middle of the restaurant that I wish I would have taken pictures of. I've never seen anything like that before. I will forever recommend this place to anyone who is asking. ** Warning ** tons of taxidermy on the wall that was killed by the restaurant owner in South Africa. What a cool bar! My wife and I went here on three separate occasions while staying at the J.W. Marriott and each visit was great. It has a very unique but beautiful African theme and the staff were fantastic - even when they were absolutely slammed. I've worked in a high volume bar in the past, and these guys and gals would've been my dream co-workers; hats off to them. We snacked on the chicken shawarma tacos and the biltong, both of which were tasty. However, the cocktail menu is where they really shine. The Mazagran was my go-to, and the production involved in making it was really interesting to watch. It's obviously pricey due to the fact it's in a upscale hotel, but is absolutely worth a visit! read more

Stayed at the hotel. This bar caught our eye straight away. I saw the stuffed emus and a huge hanging alligator and was intrigued.... Upon walking in, I observed busts of multiple African animals decorating the walls, which felt wrong, but my husband and I decided to get one drink at the beautiful bar. Luckily for the establishment, their staff is excellent! Mika and her team were very friendly and welcoming toward us. We had a cocktail each and then returned after dinner to sample some of their other specialty cocktails, since we didn't feel like venturing out on our last night in Savannah. Baobab daiquiri is super neat and comes with a great big bubble which one pops. So cool! The only issue with the bar is the organ player who constantly played right outside, creating a cacophony when competing with the bar's music.
