After sitting for several minutes without anyone coming by, we eventually went up to the bar to order. We were then told that the menu that had been placed on our table wasn't actually available yet and that we needed to order from a more limited menu. We were also told at that point that we needed to get our own water, which we did. We chose a cheese and charcuterie plate from the limited menu and ordered it about 20 minutes before dinner service began. Forty minutes later, we still hadn't received it. What made the wait especially puzzling was that this was a cold cheese and charcuterie plate requiring no cooking. Meanwhile, tables around us that ordered after the dinner menu became available were already receiving their food--including a burger that actually needed to be cooked. It was difficult to understand how a cheese and charcuterie plate ordered earlier could take longer to reach the table than a cooked-to-order burger ordered later. During that entire time, no one came to our table to check on us, refresh our water, ask if we wanted another drink, or acknowledge that our food was taking an unusually long time. In fact, we're not sure anyone realized how long we had been waiting. Each of us, separately, went back up to the bar to inquire about the order. Both times we were simply told that it was coming. It wasn't until after we had each gone up to ask about it that anyone apologized or offered to take care of the cheese and charcuterie plate. We were also told that the kitchen was extremely busy, which we accepted at the time. However, when we left and walked past the open-air kitchen, there appeared to be virtually nothing happening. The dining room was empty, and we saw only two or three guests at the downstairs bar. Obviously, we couldn't know what orders or prep work the kitchen may have been handling behind the scenes, but what we observed didn't seem consistent with the explanation we had been given for the delay. What made the experience particularly confusing was that while we had been told to get our own water and order at the bar, we watched servers bringing water, glasses of wine, and food to other tables. Perhaps the row of tables where we were seated wasn't assigned to a server, or there was some distinction in service that wasn't explained to us, but from a guest's perspective it felt like we had simply fallen through the cracks. We appreciated that they ultimately took care of the cheese and charcuterie plate, but by that point we had spent most of our visit trying to figure out how to get service and where our food was. We had planned to have more drinks, but the experience left us with no desire to order anything else or spend any more money there. The rooftop itself is a lovely setting, which made the experience even more disappointing. We weren't expecting anything extraordinary--just clear communication, reasonably consistent service, and the food we ordered in a reasonable amount of time.
