hot tub folliculitis after 6 days of antibiotics
Shannon J.

Please beware. My visit became a health nightmare. I visited Banya 5 in mid-March, and at first, my experience was actually fine and relaxing. Customer service and patrons were fine and I enjoyed my time there--until a few days later, when everything started to go downhill. About 3 days after my visit, I developed a small patch of itchy, raised bumps on the top of my foot--exactly where the rubber sandals provided by the spa had rubbed my skin. What seemed minor at first slowly worsened over the next month, and then starting about 10 days ago, I had red itchy bumps almost everywhere. The infection--diagnosed as hot tub folliculitis at urgent care--spread aggressively: * From my left foot up my entire left leg, * Onto my right leg, abdomen, neck, * Tops of my hands and arms, * Even my eyelids and earlobes became swollen. For the past week, I've battled relentless itchiness, burning, swelling, brain fog, and fatigue. My whole body is inflamed and red, and I'm on strong antibiotics to get it under control. The itchiness has been pure torture -- even making it hard to sleep. This has completely disrupted my life for over a week already, and my skin has a long way to go to heal--meaning I'll be out of commission for at least two full weeks. What's especially concerning is that I found at least three other Yelp reviews mentioning folliculitis or rashes from Banya 5, which suggests a pattern and a serious sanitation issue. While my spa experience felt good at the time, it absolutely wasn't worth the health nightmare that followed. I'm now deeply reluctant to ever use a hot tub or visit a spa again. I cannot recommend this place, and I urge others to think twice before risking their health here.

Wonderful. Highlights for me are the super hot dry sauna and the ice cold pool. The facilities are quite nice all around.

Loved our time at B5 on our vacation to Seattle. What a gem! Next time we visit, we will call ahead for additional spa treatments.

Ask the Community - Banya 5

Does this spa have coed nudity?

No, it does not.

Why is everyone wearing swimsuits? I thought this spa was more "European" previously.. so I left mine at home. Now I'm stuck in this robe since literally everyone here is suited up. Ugh.

Palace Spa in federal way is a nude spa, rarely anyone is ever in a swimsuit!

From friendly instructors to clean facilities, I genuinely look forward to going to classes. There are lockers, bathrooms, showers, water fountains, and hanging racks available. Try to get to class at least 5 minutes before so you can get ready and settled into your mat. They also rent out mats and towels at the front desk. Most classes start on your back, which I love because it helps me clear my mind before class starts. My favorite instructors are Bekah, Chelsea, and Tami. Whenever I see their names on the schedule, I know I'm in for an excellent session. They're easy to hear throughout class and give clear, straightforward instruction that makes the practice accessible without unnecessary complexity or repetition. I highly recommend trying these instructors, though you really can't go wrong with any of the instructors here. There is street parking around the building and also a parking lot that you can access from 71st or 72nd street. It costs 4.99 for 90 minutes, but if you shop at PCC with a minimum purchase the charge is waived ( don't forget to get the coupon from PCC when you check out!)

I've been practicing here for just over three months, and I continually leave class with a calm state of mind feeling relaxed and refreshed. All the instructors are super friendly and encouraging, fostering a safe, judgment-free environment. Shout out to all the instructors that have taught me SO MUCH. Thank you, Liz (owner), Ashley, Jamie, Julie, Michelle, and of course Beau. I love that they each have their unique teaching style, keeping classes fun and exciting. They consistently reinforce fitting the practice to fit your own body's needs. Whether you're just starting or have been doing this for years, all yogis are welcome here. Pilates and barre are still on my to-do list, but I've heard great things about them! They also hold events such as Barre-oke (barre meets karaoke), sound baths, buti yoga, and drum circles. They even did a special puppy (foster puppies) yoga session last month! Things To Note: Although the Shiva Studio remains listed on the Active & Fit website, it no longer participates in the A&F program. In The Kutt, a hip-hop dance studio is right next door; sometimes, each studio has a class simultaneously. Unfortunately, at no fault of Shiva's own, can be distracting to hear their music during a yoga session. However, this happens infrequently and isn't enough to negatively impact their score. FYI, after my two-week trial, I needed some assistance initiating the monthly membership through the Shiva website. Liz quickly and efficiently helped me with this in person at the studio. The Mind Body app is the most efficient way of looking up the weekly schedule and signing up for classes. Liz checks in on you by email after your first few sessions to see if you have any questions or comments! She has been timely and informative with my email inquiries. Come and support a small, local business that only does great things for our community!

Joel is hands-down the most patient, knowledgable, and honest yogi I've met. He blends philosophy and meditation with physical strength. One of the things he says in class is that "yoga is a breathing practice...with postures." For someone like me who is wound up really tightly, having a mentor who reminds me to slow down and breathe has changed the quality of my whole life. Joel works hard to create a community at the Smith. It's more of a family and less of a gym. He has an optional co-op program that allows members a discount on classes, and in exchange, we contribute to helping cancer patients practice for free. Classes are affordable, focused, and manageable for all levels of expertise. I find the curriculum challenging but not frustrating. I get a good workout and I always feel better after class. I love looking around the space and seeing an array of body shapes, skin colors, and ages. No egotistical show-offs here, just lovely people excited to do yoga together. The Smith is always clean, warm, and safe. It even smells good! I feel a weight lifted off my shoulders every time I climb the stairs. Highly recommended for newbies and old pros alike. Much love for Joel and Yogasmith!

Siddhartha sits by the entrance, greeting practitioners as they arrive for class. A creaky staircase leads to an inviting space with brick walls, beautiful hardwood floors and ample windows throughout. A majestic gong sits front and center in the room and is surrounded by singing bowls. Music plays softly and, depending on the time of day, candles flicker. Merely entering the space stirs a sense of well-being. Yogasmith offers a variety of classes for students of all levels. These include an introductory series, as well as all-level, men's, restorative and cannabis-friendly classes. In addition to classes, there are workshops and special events such as a monthly Sound Bath. The instructors at Yogasmith come from different backgrounds, each bringing his/her own unique expertise. The studio is open seven days a week, which makes scheduling easy. Students can sign up for a series (or "stream" in Yogasmith lingo) or drop-in. Director Joel Benjamin is the soul-epicenter of Yogasmith. His approach to teaching is gentle, good-humored and encouraging. And as founder of the studio, he has gone to great length to create a community that is vibrant and inclusive. He is exquisitely mindful of how world events impact this community and is diligent in his efforts to offer comfort, resources and tools in response. There are always tea and snacks in the kitchen at Yogasmith. There is also a living room area with a library full of books on meditation, yoga and various spiritual traditions. Hang after class is highly encouraged. There are numerous coffee shops and restaurants around the bustling Georgetown neighborhood for anyone seeking a more substantial post-class nibble. I've been practicing at Yogasmith for a little over three years now, and the benefit has been invaluable. I always leave feeling better than when I came in. And with each practice, I learn something that I can take with me and apply to daily life. As a fairly recent empty nester, I'm especially grateful for the community I've found here. Whether you're a first-time student or a lifelong practitioner, there is something for you at Yogasmith. I encourage all to give it a try.
