A fantastic spa in the South Lake Union area. It's even an easy walk from the South Lake Union streetcar. They provide you with a locker, sandals, and towels for use while there. The humid sauna is my favorite along with the tepid pool. They have showers to get a blast of cold water in between sauna sessions as well. Also, do not forget the tea space upstairs to relax. I'm not sure about the negative reviews but we've been to spas across the US and this is definitely near the top for us. It was clean and the staff were attentive. We loved the ice bath and the steam room is probably my favorite one ever. We felt comfortable at all times and even had quiet conversations with each other and the people around us. Definitely not what I want in a spa environment. There's not really a disclaimer or description on Yelp or their website, but this is a social spa. I went in because I like the pictures of the tiles and enjoy the aesthetic of the building and the facility did not disappoint. Shortly after getting situated in the sauna, I quickly realized that people were talking (full volume) and carried on the whole time. After about 45 min of internal screaming, I changed back to my street clothes. There no way I would survive 2 hours of of conversation when I'm trying to relax. Once I got back to the front counter, the staff was super nice and understanding. They apologized for my experience and comped me. While I can't recommended this place for someone who wants a Zen experience like myself, I can see the appeal for people just trying to hang out and unwind in a healthier setting than a bar. read more

From the moment I arrived, I noticed that the only employees visible on the premises were male employees. I specifically asked the receptionist whether there were female staff members because I was already feeling uneasy. I was told that the person doing my body scrub and the massage staff were female, but throughout the facility the only employees I physically saw were men, which added to my discomfort. I was also required to hand over a personal item of value before beginning the experience. That immediately raised concerns for me, as it did not make me feel secure or comfortable entering the facility. What I initially wanted was simply a tour or walkthrough of the facility before fully participating, but I was informed that I was required to shower and prepare before even being allowed to see the spa area itself. My wife and I recently visited Banya 5 for the first time, and had a decent experience. It was not the best spa experience I have ever had, but it wasn't the worst either. The staff is really nice and gives a detailed explanation of the spa layout, etc. on your first visit. They are very LGBTQ+ friendly here and gender inclusive, which I appreciated. The spa is very clean, and the staff are very attentive to cleanliness, etc. I appreciated the relaxation area upstairs, and the steam room, sauna, and cold dip, as well as the relaxing pool with salt in it. Some things that I did not like were that the hot tub was not that hot at all, and did not have running jets, which is something that you would expect of a spa. That was disappointing. In addition, the ladies locker room was super small and very crowded. The locker room doors are very hard to get open. They really need a new locker system. Also, their website does not have a very user friendly experience when it comes to booking. For instance, when I booked for my wife and I, we had to book two separate bookings. I couldn't book two people on the same reservation. That was annoying. They really need a booking system revamp. Overall, it was an average experience, and I would consider visiting again. Please beware. My visit became a health nightmare. I visited Banya 5 in mid-March, and at first, my experience was actually fine and relaxing. Customer service and patrons were fine and I enjoyed my time there--until a few days later, when everything started to go downhill. About 3 days after my visit, I developed a small patch of itchy, raised bumps on the top of my foot--exactly where the rubber sandals provided by the spa had rubbed my skin. What seemed minor at first slowly worsened over the next month, and then starting about 10 days ago, I had red itchy bumps almost everywhere. The infection--diagnosed as hot tub folliculitis at urgent care--spread aggressively: * From my left foot up my entire left leg, * Onto my right leg, abdomen, neck, * Tops of my hands and arms, * Even my eyelids and earlobes became swollen. For the past week, I've battled relentless itchiness, burning, swelling, brain fog, and fatigue. My whole body is inflamed and red, and I'm on strong antibiotics to get it under control. The itchiness has been pure torture -- even making it hard to sleep. This has completely disrupted my life for over a week already, and my skin has a long way to go to heal--meaning I'll be out of commission for at least two full weeks. What's especially concerning is that I found at least three other Yelp reviews mentioning folliculitis or rashes from Banya 5, which suggests a pattern and a serious sanitation issue. While my spa experience felt good at the time, it absolutely wasn't worth the health nightmare that followed. I'm now deeply reluctant to ever use a hot tub or visit a spa again. Nothing against the spa itself -- my issue is specifically with this therapist. A couple of months ago, I came here for a massage and it was absolutely amazing -- the therapist was a tall guy (unfortunately, I forgot his name), but I would have given him 10 stars if I could. Today, however, was a completely different experience. My therapist was Andrea Menendez, and honestly, it was terrible. It felt like she didn't really know what she was doing. She was pressing on my muscles and just standing there, holding pressure for no clear reason. I kept flinching from pain the entire time. At the beginning, I clearly said that I just wanted to relax, but instead I was counting the minutes until it was over. Maybe some people like that style, but she did the same repetitive movements for 90 minutes straight. I left feeling tense and disappointed -- not relaxed at all. When I mentioned it at the front desk, they asked if I wanted to leave her a comment or a tip. Of course not -- I want to leave a review for future clients, not for her. I've enjoyed coming here for a long time, but the price is becoming a barrier. It is now 65$ (before tax) for 2 hours and reservations must be booked online. I recently learned that you are also only able to make reservations for yourself after I accidentally believed I had booked reservations for myself and my partner. It does make it hard to drop in at the spur the moment, but they do have a waitlist if you live close. I looked for many weeks to find same day space on a weekend with limited success. I did not realize that they had their own parking lot, which will make the cost better next time since I paid nearly 15$ for 3 hours of street parking. On the inside everything is the same. I've visited many times since my last review in 2010. My partner is a fan and I often think this may help some of the many physical ailments he complains of, he does report relief upon exiting, but it never seems long lasting. I've still not mastered the cold plunge, but do enjoy hopping between all the other options. I'm getting much better at the salt water tepid pool, which definitely feels colder than 87 degrees to me. I usually spend most of my time in the hot pool. I really enjoyed coming here! When you first walk in you talk with the front desk. They get you set up with a locker, towels, flip flops, and water cups if you need them. You provide an item (ie a phone, wallet) for collateral to return the key. The locker room is fairly small, but it works! There's two showers to rinse off as well as body wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body lotion. Out in the spa there's a sauna, tepid tub, cold tub, hot tub, and a steam room. What a cool find in Seattle. This little place (or so it appears from the outside) houses a full sauna and bathing experience. There is an exceptional steam room, an exceptionally hot dry sauna, a freezing cold plunge pool, a room temperature pool (which feels transformative after the cold pool), a hot pool, and lovely hot showers. Decided to try booking a massage at Banya 5 and had been texting with their recommended number to book (a requirement to text or call for massage treatments). The response times were spotty, but was finally able to get connected and seemingly reserve a spot for a massage today at 4pm. I inquired regarding the possibility to use the spa prior to my massage and that was confirmed. Knowing that I was tight on time, I immediately got ready and drove to the location. When I checked into the front desk, they stated that my booking was "never completed" and unapologetically was told that I can try for the next available time slot which was several hours out. Frustrated with the absolute unprofessional Ian displayed I walked out and reached back out to the booking number with no response. It appears as if several potential patrons have had similar experiences with Banya 5 and the disrespect they've felt by their staff. The facilities are pretty nice, but the service is less than great. They assigned me and all the other women around this time the same lockers ~54-58 so we were all stacked on top of each other when there's 30+ lockers in the locker room. The locker room has 2 shower heads but a curtain that closes both, so I had to wait nearly 10 minutes to rinse off because a woman took her space and time, and similarly as I was leaving. There should be sign for a 5 minute shower policy as well as a sign that there are places to rinse within the spa so I wouldn't have waited. A few minutes after I went into the spa, I asked the spa attendant where I can get a water cup and she goes "oh... there in front" and then walked away. They weren't in front- they were upstairs. It would not make sense for them to be in front and not within the facilities for people to refill, so I'm honestly confused why she said that. Where do I even begin. I visited this place on my birthday for relaxation but that was not what I received. They have two hour slots for visits but jam pack it with so many people. I never got any peace or quiet. I only stayed dor an hours due to there being at least 20 other people using the facility at the same time all talk loud and making noise. I would give zero stars if possible. Avoid this place like the Plague. Scheduled a massage and spa time for my husband on Father's Day. I made the appointment on a Thursday. Friday they called to state that I couldn't make an appointment for him because he needed to set up an account. It was supposed to be a gift but you can't gift a spa treatment. Odd how they track their customers makes you wonder what is really going on in the "spa'. Set up his account which was another 15 minutes on the phone and paid. I was told on Thursday his time was spa 9-11 then massage 11-1230. On Friday since they didn't schedule it even though they stated they did and I received a confirmation email, they no longer had that time slot. They stated that he should just go from 9-1030 then have his massage 1030-1200 and then use the spa for the remainder of his paid time 30 minutes. He arrived and did exactly as he was told. At 1230 theyme into the bathroom yelling his name. They then told him he was two hours over his spa time. No apology no explaining, just rude. He explained to them exactly what was told to him they stated it was not in any of their notes. Still no apology. After returning home, I called to inquire about the service. Sam, the manager, doubled down stating what they said to him. I then told her- how her staff is just downright rude and incompetent. I also told her it was a f----ing joke how they treat customers. She said I couldn't speak like that and hung up on me. My husband also stated no sauna etiquette. Frequent users that talk extremely loud the whole time. We will not be returning. The cold plunge is the coldest I've ever been in the facility always looks very clean and they have yummy tea upstairs 100% would recommend. This place is awesome from the pools to the sauna the rotation through the different stations left me more relaxed than a normal massage - to be clear I didn't get a massage here - but when I leave a massage I always feel a bit beat up. The hot to cold to warm to hot cycle left my muscles so loose and relaxed after five rounds. It's a great way to have a relaxing day. The customer service was miserable. When we first walked in - the very first interaction we made - the condescension was unacceptable. My wife for my birthday booked this for me as a surprise. I had never been. "We don't allow surprises *eye roll*." We're not at a fast food chain, dude, this is a premium activity. And look, I can accept that they want the experience to go a certain way but to make us feel unwanted for breaking this (possibly made up) rule is ridiculous. There's nothing quite like a birthday surprise, being accompanied by hostility - just what everyone wants for their big day /s. After having gone to Banya5 for 10+ years, it's hard to leave this type of review. There are literally zero reason to go to Banya5 as they do their best to make as difficult to get into the doors as possible. Consider these roadblocks: 1) online reservations for 2 hour blocks of time, only. Must sign waiver after waiver after waiver to simply book a time. Pre-covid? Walk in the doors, hand over an ID and off you go for an unlimited amount of time. Now? Why bother. Oh, and if you want to pair your time in the sauna with spa services, you'll wear a mask. It's almost 2024 and this place is still masking up. With reduced entry. In a warm, wet environment. 2) there are regulars who spend every night of the week here. They all know each other and it's a little club that if you're not a part of, you never will be. They're loud, talk all the time and remove any peace and serenity available to the facilities. If you've ever wanted to hear an Amazon techbro tell you about why socialism in Brazil during the 70s was peak civilization and how he is going to write a book about it after he backpacks through all of South America after he makes L7 and his bonus comrs through, this is the place for you. 3) it's not that great of a value. Prices have gone up over the years and I can only imagine it's because the owners view this place as a hobby, not a business. Years ago the owner would use the facilities and tell everyone about how he had traveled all over the wold and picked the best parts of other cultures sauna rituals to open Banya5 with. Cultural appropriation in the name of fleecing people for a hobby just doesn't sit well with me. Purchased a 60 minute massage with the 2 hour spa access. Change rooms were nice, friendly staff and had the best massage from Wayne I have ever had! The spa access was good, there were 5 stages plus a cold and hot rainfall showers. It was all located in one room which was convenient but got loud at times and with the amount of people in the space it was sometimes hard to use a specific pool because they only held 3-4 at a time (sauna and steam room held more). Same for sauna, if someone spoke it was loud and disruptive to your experience but with the different rooms and a team/nap room on the second floor it did space out after your first hour. All in all a good experience but would be nice if they did up the space a bit more with plants and some music which would go a long way from it looking so plain and clinical. read more

I travel to Seattle every year for a doctors appt with a specialist, so I always try and book some "mommy alone time" since its usually a quick trip without my kiddos. This was my second time coming to Banya 5, one year apart. Last year I would have given it 4 stars because one of the other spa goers took the time to teach me about thermal cycling and I had a great scrub and massage, and I didn't interact with staff at all except for checking in/out. The facility itself is a bit small for the amount of people and you will be bumping arms in the locker room. This year was a little different. I checked in, changed/showered and headed in. The time in the spa was ok but not as refreshing as I remember it last year. Maybe because I cold plunge on a regular basis now? or the fact that there were different people this time, not sure. I booked a package with a scrub and massage that came with 2 hours of facility time. I had a good scrub and then this is where it all went down hill. For some reason they didn't book my services back to back so after the scrub I just sat upstairs for 30 minutes with nothing to do but drink tea, no snacks (they don't allow any phones, no one else was upstairs to talk with, and after you start having services you can't go back into the pools/saunas). Finally, the masseuse came and called my name. She was wearing a mask, which is totally fine and her choice. We went into the room and I stated to sit my stuff down and she said "actually could you sit down for a second so we can talk" and proceeded to hand me a mask. I put it on thinking ok maybe she want me to wear it while we are talking?? I was pretty confused why since I wasn't sick and she was already wearing a mask. She then goes on saying that either party can choose to end the massage at any time if we feel uncomfortable (which was making me uncomfortable) and that I need to wear my mask the ENTIRE time during the massage. I said there is no way I"m going to be able to comfortably breath with my face down in the head holder with a mask on. She offered to massage me only face up but since I hold most of my stress in my shoulders and upper back this seemed pointless. The entire reason I wanted a massage was to relax and wearing a mask is uncomfortable and NOT RELAXing! She said "well I require a mask". So I declined the massage. I go down stairs, change back into my clothes and go to the desk to check out. The guy checking me out informs me that since I booked a package and opted out of the massage I would get NO refund. I felt like they should have told me that they booked me when a masseuse that requires me to wear a mask during the massage (because I could have declined the services then) and he was very condescending and kept saying it's in our policy, and its to keep everyone safe. Safe from what??? I wasn't sick and honestly when they send me the forms talking about COVID I thought they just never updated it from like 2021 and never would have thought mask requirements for a healthy person is still a thing. So I want everyone to be aware that you might actually be required to wear a mask DURING YOUR ENTIRE MASSAGE (or other service) or ANY OTHER TIME THEY FEEL LIKE MAKING YOU per their policy. This is my first experience with a Banya (I later learned this is a Russian word after I looked it up post my stay). First off, I don't understand why they don't have an online calendar. You call or text them. It should be book/pay online then receive the waiver to sign electronically. Tech bros get on it! Got the $40 Wed/Thursday prior to 3 pm. $60 on regular hours for up to 120 minutes. The staff were friendly & hospitable. The parking lot adjacent to their building has been apprehended by construction workers. They directed me to 12 diagonal spaces behind their building. You can park there all day. I didn't get much of an explanation even after I said it was my first time. It would be cool if they mention Banya is a Russian word & give a 1-2 minute speech on it. Oh well. The locked room is tight. Nay - the whole place is cramp. Glad they have showers prior to the spa. It's coed. That threw me off. Everyone coexisted well. Light conversation with a stranger wasn't met with suspicion like it usually is around Seattle. The heat thaws the Freeze. They have a cold pool, a lukewarm pool and a hot pool. They also have a dry and wet sauna. Three showers in the area. The 2nd floor has a seating area. All hard outdoor chairs because they assume your butt is wet. I did enjoy their complimentary herbal hot tea blend & the cold lemon water. The nap area was lacking. It had outdoor pool chairs you could lay on, but they were those rubber horizontal bands covering the chair. I'd rather sleep on the carpeted floor. Ambiance: It can get loud. You have tech bros either talking loud or trying to flex on their friends by jumping into the cold pool. Then you have some women with high pitched voices. Go check out Nancy Daniela products to build a more resonant voice. I did. I like how there are opportunities to socialize. But if you're trying to solo it w/ no interaction then it will annoy you. All in all, it's a friendly no frills Russian bathhouse experience. If I lived in the area I'd probably hit this then go to the bar next door to chill. But alas I live in West Seattle. I was trying to book massages and after a bunch of back and forth the lady that was booking me, she was booking me for the wrong day, even after I had messaged and told her over the phone the correct date. Ended up not booking massages which was disappointing and I wasted so much time with the back and forth. 2. You have to wear masks in 100+ degree whether in the sauna and in the steam room. 3. Apparently managers that work there hang out (on duty or off who knows) with clients? My mask slipped off my nose and I got snapped at by a lady. I pulled it up right away. Then she came over for a second time telling me she's a manager and why we had that altercation. Like seriously? I fixed my mask can you leave me alone now? She was not kind and honestly so abrasive and off putting. 4. Apparently you can talk as loud as you want in there. There were two women that were talking so loud you can hear them in every room, and swearing. I would leave every room as soon as they came because it was the opposite of relaxing. Picture this, sitting in a hot steam room, wearing a soaking wet mask you can barely breathe in, loud people talking about work and dating and swearing while they're at it. 5. Oh yeah, and they don't serve any water and they have no chairs to sit down in or lay in. I just about overheated in there. So much for a relaxing spa experience. We arrived an hour before the massage to use the soak experience. We liked the three different temperatures of the pools and the steam room was nice. The pools are quite small and can really only fit 3-4 people comfortably. I've been to many similar style spas and this was the first one that did not limit noise whatsoever. I should have really listened to the previous reviews mentioning this. My biggest issue was the volume and amount of talking in the dry sauna. There were multiple people, who seemed to be regulars who all knew each other, talking about food, restaurants, travel, etc. all things that did nothing to help me relax. It was quite rude and disturbing, and this happened despite signs posted around the facility asking people to speak in quiet voices. However, both my friend and I had incredible massages. Our therapists were Katherine and Lindsey . Both were extremely attentive and alert to our individual needs. Katherine sat down with me before the massage to clearly understand what I was looking for and made it clear she was open to any feedback I could provide to make my experience better. Now, I was looking late on a Saturday afternoon, basically wanting something right away understanding that this was a generally unrealistic goal especially since we both hold a pretty high bar for a good massage. Luckily, I discovered Banya 5. The description alone is pretty intriguing and if you are reading this review you know that. But is it as good as it seems on the web? Absolutely! The facility is calming, clean and quite unique. We enjoyed the spa/sauna before our massages. I can imagine that if you when during a high time of the day it could be crowded as the spa area isn't huge, but I didn't have any issue. I loved the general flow of the different spa features. The sauna is huge and the cold tub is a tortuous delight. The massage was also next level. My massage was excellent and my husband's was "top 3 best massages." My husband has chronic back pain and worked with Tyrone and he said he was able to use the precise amount of pressure and general massage technique to have him walking out on cloud nine. A recent reviewer mentioned one bad apple ruining the bunch, and I'm going to assume we were both treated poorly by an individual working the front desk - customer service sucks, but so does being an as*hole. Having never been to something like this, overall I'd love to try it again, just not here. The pools and locker rooms were incredibly cramped and filled quickly. A more appropriate occupancy limit could vastly improve things and it's off putting that Banya5 advertises a peaceful experience, only to jam pack their small facility with participants. The permission of obnoxiously loud conversation did not help. A very expensive experience with multiple misses, I'm looking forward to finding a better fit elsewhere. read more

I gave 4 star keeping in mind this is a business trying to survive the during pandemic world, but the experience with them was rather clumsy. I've been debating for a month whether to post the review, as my experience might have been a one-off. But here goes: I had a 60-min custom massage for $130+. I was expecting a much better experience for that price. The masseuse who was helping me wasn't the most intuitive and thorough - sometimes they missed the trigger points by half an inch or so. I was still in pain afterwards and didn't feel much relief. (My chiropractor I see regularly would do everything in her might in a 30-min visit to address all my concerns and pain, and is knowledgeable and intuitive with anatomy. I was under the impression other therapists should know their anatomy well). The receptionist wasn't too sure on the differences between the massages, or which one was available. In general the vibe was a bit unwelcoming and confusing. Came paying time, they don't take Apple Pay so since I lived a 3-minute walk from them, I went to grab my card and cash. When I came back, they told me they just charged the card on file "by mistake" and were trying to refund it. They clearly assumed I wasn't coming back, which I could understand, but writing it off as "by mistake" is just unprofessional. The card on file that I signed on was for security deposit reason only. At the end of the day, I could see they're just opening back up and is still not yet smooth running, but the whole thing left a weird taste in my mouth. I think my experience was just a one-off, but I sure am not excited to visit again. It was a sad $130 spent on a birthday self-treat. Too bad they're the only spa in my walking distance. read more

I had a 90 minute massage with Theresa, and it was incredible! She was informative with her approach, checked in throughout, and shared the most beautiful energy. I usually love this place. Their lack of communication, i.e. phone doesn't work and inability to book services via phone doesn't make sense to me. I've really enjoyed going here but not being able to correctly book a spa session and/or any other type of service is frustrating. I was shared a time to book a massage and then had it pulled away from me because they were not too busy booking other appointments via phone. When you try the phone it went straight to VM saying they were too busy. This is a great facility (5 Stars) but the operations, communication and customer service are hovering between a 1 & 2 a two star. I'd expect any company to own these mistakes but have yet to receive any type of apology or explanation. read more

Visited with a friend on her birthday on a Sunday around 11am. We were warmly greeted and given a quick overview of facilities and locker keys. It was a bit tough to figure out how to open lockers at first but we ran into an attendant who was able to help (and then we helped 3 other patrons that came in after us, so it was a common problem). The locker room is small but clean. The shower is communal with only 2 shower heads and just before we'd arrived, the shower curtain had fallen down. So expect a wait if 2 people are already in the shower and if you're looking for privacy, this might not be the place for you. Really glad they have timed entry because the pools are smaller and felt a bit crowded at times; however, the Parilka and Steam Room felt more spacious. There was also plenty of space in tea lounge which had a delicious cinnamon herbal tea blend. I wish there was a bit more guidance (maybe posted somewhere) on the recommended order to try the rooms/pools but either way, it's a nice and relaxing experience. We did notice that the spa seemed less crowded when we were leaving around 1pm, so perhaps I'd try a later time for next visit. Loved the 50% discount for 2-hour birthday entry! That's a nice way to make patrons feel special. read more
