This is no Topel- real fine wine with a fantastic atmosphere at Banshee. We could have stayed all night. The Pinot Noir was totally amazing, but if you are a white wine lover you will want to take a case of the Sauvignon Blanc. I will be back. One of my new favorites!!!you really must try. Go try wine at this fantastic and fun tasting room in the middle of Healdsburg. Banshee wines was started by three friends in San Francisco. I think their first batch was a pinot and it turned out so good they quickly expanded to other varietals. The tasting room just opened a few weeks ago. Its laid out a bit like a comfortable living room with couches, big plush chairs, and a big wooden table with stools in the middle. There is even a pretty good record collection and a record player. Pick something out and they'll put it on for you. Once you have the tunes started go have a seat anywhere and they will start bring out the goods. Banshee sources their grapes from a variety of vineyards in Sonoma including Russian River and Anderson Valley. The day I was there we tasted a rose (pinot), two whites (sauvignon and chardonnay) and three reds (pinot noir and a blend). All were very good. Especially liked the mineral qualities of the pinot and the blend. Our host Kim, had a great way of describing all of the flavors and I cant do them justice. I just thought they were "uh..good..grunt". The wines are priced in the twenty dollar range. At least the ones we ended up buying. If you are in the area, they are definitely worth a stop. And lots of great restaurants in walking distance. So you can't go wrong. read more

With so many wineries, how does one choose? We went here based solely on a recommendation from one of the Oregon wine makers we know.... he told us Zack would take good care of us.... that was an understatement! There were four of us in our tasting, we sat in one of the corner couches and waited for Zack. He came over with many bottles of wine for us to try! He also took the time to explain what regions the grapes came from, I like the educational part behind the wines I'm tasting. Too many times, you just get a pour and not much info behind the wine. This was nice! Our tasting proceeded with many, many, many wines... I will say, they are so far the only California wine that can actually make a decent Pinot! Most Cali Pinot's are crap, they should leave that to their Northern sister state! the Mordecai was our favorite! All of us were wow'd over this one, full body blend that could hold up to a burger or steak anytime. The Tina Marie was also my other fav... one of the Pinot's that was decent. We ended up buying many bottles to ship home and joined their wine club! I would recommend these guys to anyone! What an adorable tasting room just a couple of blocks from the main town square in Healdsburg. The tasting room is pretty small - 4-6 tables for people to taste and enjoy wine. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly which makes the entire experience more enjoyable. Hip vibe for a tasting room, this place seems more like a funky wine bar than a typical Healdsburg tasting room. If you are looking for a place to sit back, relax and sip some wine, this is your place! I was pleasantly surprised by the Pinot Noir wines that i tasted here. I typically find Sonoma Pinot to be earthy, herbaceous and hot with high alcohol. The Banshee pinots remind me more of Anderson Valley or Santa Ynez wines than their Sonoma brethren. The Tina Marie reminds me of the best Burgundian pinots; light and scented of strawberries. The Chardonnays that I tasted were old-school butter and cream. If you are looking for this style, you will like Banshee's chard offerings. I was bummed not to taste the Mordecai since the new release is not yet available. Banshee was our last stop the other weekend after 3 visits earlier that day to Wilson, Soda Rock, and Mazzocco where we had our fill of Zinfandel, but no Pinot. I was with some friends who are members so we had reservations which are definitely needed, as the small tasting room was packed when we arrived at 4:30pm on a Saturday. They were also closing early for a private party. The woman helping us was new, but super nice and helped us out with some dinner recommendations for later that night. We tasted a variety of their reds on offer, but my favorite wines by far were the incredibly affordable Mordechai blend, and the Marine Layer Pinot. The tasting room has a pretty trendy vibe and was packed with friends and young couples in their 30s and quite a few strollers. Great music, but the communal table is pretty uncomfortable to sit at and hard to talk with people next to you so try to get a booth if you can. read more

This is a cool tasting room. I really like the ambiance and how it isn't a tasting bar, but there are tables and couches like a lounge where you can enjoy the experience with your friends. The staff is also very friendly and tell you about some of the history of this winery and the wine makers. The real reason I gave three stars is for the wine itself. The wine: I tasted their Rose (Pinot), Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and a Red Blend of around 10 varietals. The rose was pleasant, refreshing, slightly sweet, and slightly aromatic. It was quite pleasurable and I would drink it again. The Sauvignon Blanc was done entirely in stainless steel for the aging process (definitely not my preference) and lacked and distinguishing quality whatsoever. It was very light and refreshing, but without flavor I would prefer water with lemon. The Chardonnay was equally as displeasing as the Sauvignon Blanc. It had slightly more flavor, but was aged in French Oak for only 10% of the aging process. Anecdote about the white wine: The ladies in the tasting room said that their wine makers prefer to age white wine in stainless steel, because it keeps the "fresh crispness of the wine". In my opinion it makes the wine lack flavor and body, which defeats the whole point of drinking wine. When I drink wine I want the flavor to overwhelm my senses and throw my mind into ecstasy. Neither of these white wines came remotely close to that. Moving on through the wine list: The Pinot Noir was simple slightly dark and very pleasurable. It wasn't a great Pinot, but it was good and I would drink it again. The Red Blend was fantastic! Oh my word this is there saving grace! When they first told me all of the varietals that were in this wine I was shocked at how long the list was (I think around 10). However, with the first sip I tasted such complexity and you could pick out so many different flavors. A little dark cherry, a little spiciness, oh wait here is more flavor. Just thinking about this wine makes me want to go back right now. It was $25 per bottle, which is a bit more than I would normally pay for a blend, but ohhhh what a blend! Again, I gave it three stars primarily because I seriously did not enjoy the white wines and the Pinot was so so. If they had served more reds I may have fallen in love, but I believe that a place needs to be rated on all attributes. That being said, the bathroom is quite lovely. :) read more

I went wine tasting this past weekend with 10 other amazing women from my MBA program. One of my classmates belongs to the wine club at Banshee so this ended up being our first stop. They were set up for us at the long table in the middle of the room and we received 5 pours. The first was a beautiful refreshing Rose of Pinot Noir that would've been fantastic for the pinot party I had recently. Despite my hesitation, I was outvoted by the group and we moved onto the Chardonnay. Although I usually despise chardonnays, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The Mordecai blend is a delicious full-body red that I loved. I'm trying to cut down on drinking alcohol and that's the only reason I didn't walk away with a bottle. Out of our 3 stops, the wines at Banshee were the best tasting and the most reasonably priced. We had a wonderful time at the tasting room and I would recommend Banshee's wines to everyone. read more

Banshee is a cool spot to grab wine in downtown Healdsburg. Very hip decor and good wines. It's indoors with no outdoor seating available. This place gets extremely LOUD! I enjoyed the wines and the atmosphere but they seem to attract a lot of party buses/limo groups--- no one likes being in a winery when a huge drunken group comes in! We were there for about an hour Saturday and had 2-3 limo parties stop in. It got extremely loud and it was difficult for me to hear my friend across the table. We wound up going to Hawley's around the corner which has a much more chill/laid back environment that we enjoyed much more. In sum, good wine, hip place but way too loud and seems to be a magnet for the obnoxious limo crowds. read more

What a terrible experience! We went to Banshee hoping to try the Mordecai as a friend of our loves this wine. They were "sold out". So, we decided to do a tasting. Zak was our host and I must say (and this was the consensus of the group) we were extrememly underwhelmed with him. The pours were splashes and barely even a taste. When someone in our group asked about the limited pours he sent someone else over to try and pour our next wine (she quickly went back and pulled the previous wine to give us a decent taste). On the tasting menu they show about five or six "small bites". When we asked about one of them (the charred octupus) Zak told us, "I don't know anything about it. They make it next door." If you only have a handful of food stuffs shouldn't you have tried them so you can describe them to your guests? We also asked about the area from which one of the Pinots came. He told us, "I've been there, but I wasn't driving; so I don't know where it is." Really?! This place is more like a wine bar than a winery tasting room. Also, they allow children (which we found inappropriate for a tasting room). Suffice it to say we will not return. read more

I don't go wine tasting too often so it's always an intimidating experience to walk into a tasting room I'm not used to. This place was so welcoming and just....awesome. The women working here that night were so helpful and fun to talk to. They explained that their set up is like a living room so you can just chill while you drink wine instead of walking up to a unwelcoming bartender. They pour and will sit and talk about anything including their wines. It was a really good time. The wine itself was very good. Located in the town of Healdsburg, CA on the northern tip of Sonoma these gentlemen are relatively new to the winery scene and are quickly cementing their brand on the minds of local professionals and visiting wine enthusiasts alike. Their store, a hip laid-back lounge located on Center Street, is designed to create a more social, collective experience. I can say that their unique, informal approach to wine tasting was a welcome change of pace. There is of course a reverence to their product because of its excellence, but they don't hit that excellence over your head like some cocky ass. Yes I'd return but keep in mind that I agree that it's more of a trendy place for a younger crowd. It's like walking into a younger party thinking they still didn't know what they were doing but they do. We challenged them to just bring the best they got and yep! It knocked our socks off. It was late when we entered but was just perfect to sit and relax before dinner. They were closing and we joked with the waiter as to why he wanted to hurry us off as if he had a date and sure enough, a few minutes later a young pretty gal came walking in and gave him a kiss. We all laughed. The place knows their wines - just get them to bring you what you want and they most likely will know. I'm glad the loud music was not blaring when we got there - what a bummer that would be and would probably affect our experience. Who wants to hear loud music sipping on wine? Not only were the wines amazing but the mood and service was as well. My wife and I found this gem by recommendation of stark wines down the street (which is also cool). I forgot our pourer's name but she was amazing. She was the only one, in four tasting rooms we'd been to in Healdsburg, that actually sat down with us, with a map, and explained the wines, their subtle differences and where they came from. The atmosphere was awesome too, right away they told me I could pick a record to play on their eclectic hifi system. As we speak, my wife is yelling at me to order a case from Banshee. We have been back in Cincy two days and each day has seen a bottle of Banshee adiosed! With only one bottle of Pinot Rose left, we are starting to freak out! This was such a fun visit and tasting that I really wish we could have spent more time here. So we picked this wine tasting room because we loved the decor, but like other reviewers, we also really enjoyed the experience because of Zack. The wine was good, we ordered the marcona almond snack and liked that. My husband and I had a laugh about the record collection. It's definitely old school. Kansas was playing when we walked in, followed by Police, and then I lost track (I wonder why).....We sat down for our tasting thinking we would only be there for 45 minutes max and we ended up staying and lingering for an hour and a half because we were enjoying ourselves so much. Cannot say enough about how great our experience was here! Some friends suggest we make a reservation here to start our wine tour day while we were in town and we were not disappointed! Brandon was incredibly friendly and so knowledgable. His passion for the wine making business was contagious and really added to the experience. We're not aficionados by any means and Brandon was able to keep it light and casual while still divulging interesting facts and details about each wine we tasted. I liked the come and go approach to the tastings, he'd sit and chat with us and then leave us for a bit to enjoy and make our own observations. It was very easy going and fun! He was also incredibly helpful with tips and information about the area and other great wineries and tasting rooms to visit. He more or less helped us plan the rest of our day and it was incredible! He even found a free tasting for two at one of the places that he was nice enough to give us. And the wines were so great! I just love the unique, carefully constructed and loved into existence feel of them. The Tina Marie and Morning Light are some of our favorite Pinots, the Rose is surprising and beautiful, and you should order a glass of the Cabernet Franc! Worst service I've ever had at a winery! I've worked in this industry for many years now and have never had such horrible service. Our tasting server wanted to hang out in the back more than she wanted to serve us. I understand wanting to provide a slower paced tasting and keep it more relaxed but you should be able to read your customers and realize they are not enjoying it and seem to be in a little bit of a hurry.
