I should have left that memory alone. we had a party, and I needed catering. bangkok chef catering menu prices were decent. I called in an order the day before with all of the allergies checked off and questions asked, etc, etc. and had the hubby pick up the next day. the food that I could eat was uninspired and lacking in taste, and the other items were incorrectly made. in addition, we were charged a substantial amount more than than the catering menu that was on the site. I deplore bait and switch tactics to bring in more money, especially when the customer is not advised on the phone when placing an order. an incredible disappointment; we will not be coming back read more

On Nuuanu Avenue, just above the freeway. This to me is a top notch thai food place to go. You order at the counter and food is brought out in take-out containers but there is a seating area inside to eat if you want. My Favs: Pad Si Yu (not sure if spelled correctly) chow fun type noodles with your choice of meat and veggies, Yellow Curry over jasmine rice. Food is always hot and freshly made. Menu is pretty broad to fit your mood. I like to top it off with a Coffee Tapioca dessert. Parking is a little tight but the charm of this location brings new meaning to "hole-in-the-wall" places. If you in the area, this is a go to spot to fill you up at a reasonable price. read more

There is a couple of stalls in the front, but there is also some parking in the back. Still a great place to eat! Recently came here after a day at the beach. Food was soo good! I got the green curry with just vegetables and sticky rice. My husband got the pad Thai noodles. The green curry was delicious and had a lot of flavor and a little spice (may be more spicier to other that aren't use to it) the veggies were perfectly cooked- not too soggy and not raw and hard. I don't like tofu in most of my food from restaurants because it soaks up all the oil and tastes of an oil sponge, but I do love tofu. The pad Thai noodles were good as well. Both had such large portions. We always get a couple to a few meals out of these dishes. I ate some again later on in the day and the next couple days for lunch. Their portions are so big! And the price is great. The ladies here are nice. There is plenty of tables. The dining area is not air condition, however it's nice to have fresh air when eating. Came here for the first time and was very impressed with the Beef Noodle Soup. It was delicious and tasty, no condiments needed. Also had the chicken spring rolls and that was delicious too, only wish they had more greens to complement the rolls. I will be back soon. read more

Have this place another try. The food is not bad here. It is like Thai fast food, except, last night it took kinda long for us to get our food. I guess we should've called it in. My sore point at all restaurants is when you pay with a debit or credit card. Yes, you swipe your own card, and they turn the screen to you and it asks how much tip you want to leave or no tip. Why do these places feel that they want to make people feel uncomfortable like the street beggars holding signs and walking up to your car. This is worse! Panhandling at its finest. Since when did you ever. Leave tips on take out before. Yes it's COVID times, but we are all hurting. Be happy that we patronize your eateries. This is probably one of the cheapest places to get Thai food in Honolulu. Yes, it's not fancy and you order at a counter, but it's deeelicious! And hey, no need to tip either since there's no table service. The best value seems to be if you order a curry dish, and then order a side of rice. You get a giant styrofoam container of curry - enough to last 1 more meal and maybe even 2. Plus, it's delicious (especially the Thai green curry)! I've also enjoyed the pad thai and pad see ew here - they have pretty good portions, though the pad thai is slightly larger than the pad see ew. What happened? They used to be great. Today, I called in our order, 5 items, they said 20 minutes. I show up 20 minutes later, and no food yet. No one in line, one couple eating in the restaurant, and only one order on the counter. Seems like no mad rush of orders anywhere. Where's my food? I'm guessing they started cooking it after I paid, because I had to wait another 15 minutes for the food, 35 total minutes after I called it in. Of course the person behind the counter had no friendly customer service skills. And to top it off I left a 10% tip on a take out order thinking they deserved it. Craving for some Thai food? Bangkok Chef is one of my go to places for take out even though they have lots of seating along with Hawaiian AC (no air conditioning). Parking in front is funky here, but they do have additional parking stall behind the building. My favorites here is their Basil Chicken with Sticky Rice and also Chicken Panang. This place isn't your high end restaurant for sure, but I find it comfortable and quiet. This is your order at the counter, pay and pick up when your name is called. Order at the counter (which feels like being inside of a converted garage) and take your food to go or find a table in their indoor seating area. You can get a everything ala carte, and about 9 choices such as green curry, fish patties, chicken wings, and pad thai, as a plate (which means it comes with rice). I would recommend paying extra for noodles instead of rice with your curry. It'll be like a noodle soup. If you're really in a hurry, call ahead to ensure you're not waiting, during the lunch rush it could be 30 minutes. So dissatisfied and disappointed. This is my fave Thai Restaurant every time my family and I are in Honolulu. It has completely changed. I don't know if it was sold and under new management but the usual food that we get is different. Phad Thai is soggy, the Panang, Yellow and Green Curries were full of potatoes to make it look like a food portion not a lot of meat. The Fried Rice lost the charred wok flavor but it got saltier, too much fish sauce! Not to mention the portion was cut almost in half. I guess it doesn't matter anymore since the taste is not that great anymore. Definitely not coming back here. The old man manning the counter is also rude. You can't miss it Look for the Bright Avocado Green interior:) They have a lot of take out business as well as patrons who want to eat inside and watch a little TV. Inside it's actually spacious with about 25 tables that can easily be moved together to fit larger parties. You pay up front and wait till they call your name and pick up, there is no table service. The portions are generous and I do like their brown rice it's good with curry. My usual go-to's are the Green chicken Curry over Brown Rice it's tasty and filling. It's enough for 2 meals. I like eggplant and the bamboo shoots and the green coconut curry it hits the spot on chilly nights. I also like the Panang Chicken Curry as well also flavorful and a very generous portion. Chicken satay is good but I'd recommend calling that in ahead of time as it usually takes 15-20 minutes to make. The Tapioca desserts are also very good and they have multiple flavors to choose from. This place is okay for fast thai food. Spring rolls were fried perfectly. Nice and crispy but not oily. First time having the fish patties, after eating a few I finally was able to place the flavor. I thought the green specks were green onion but the overwhelming flavor was more lemon grass than green onion. I ate it wrapped in the lettuce that came with my spring rolls. I love the sauce that comes with the fish patties as well as the spring rolls. It was the a lovely blend of sweet and spicy and not fishy. Thai coffee was yummy and sweet, almost dessert like. Sticky rice was kinda dry. Pad thai was the reason for visiting today. I thought it was just average and the main reason for the 3 star rating. I wish i could give this place a 3 1/2 but i just couldn't bring myself to give it 4. I wish I drove a 4x4 jeep right about now so i could jump the curb which is required to get into some stalls. I work at a nearby hospital and whenever we have company sponsored lunches or just all decide to order food, we often choose Bangkok Chef. There are at least 15 orders and they have yet to make a mistake on any of them (even when one is modified). The restaurant itself has indoor and 'outdoor' (garage-style) seating, and is very clean. They had a special of the day "Shrimp eggplant" which looked good, so I ordered that and the spring rolls to go because they were about to close. They have a pretty big menu, as well as a few pastries and different tapioca flavors for the sweet tooth. Each meal is made to order, and so your wait time is longer than The average drive -thru, but not ridiculously long either. The spring rolls were so crispy and fresh, and the Shrimp and eggplant dish was so tasty and fragrant I literally had to tell myself to stop eating after I got full!! I've been here so many times I have lost count. It's consistent, good food and reasonably priced. The parking is limited but they do have a small lot and sometimes street parking if avail. They offer all the different types of Thai food from Phan Thai, chicken wings, chicken larb, cashew nut chicken, curries, and so much more. My regular go to dish is ginger chicken. The containers are great (they switched over to styrofoam to plastic that can be reused. Their Thai teas and spring/summer rolls are great too. Stop by here if you need a Thai fix. Generally my family and I love this place it's in our neighborhood, healthy, affordable. However, my favorite dish has been inconsistent over the past few of visits. I have been given them the benefit of the doubt and figure everyone is has an off day but they just cannot seem to work it out. Also the customer service is very different now, I find it to be rude and inconsiderate of waiting for staff to get off their cell phones and rush to close at 8pm on the dot. It's not a fancy, sit down restaurant -- and it doesn't even have air conditioning ... but there was plenty of shaded seating with fans, the pad si yu we had was yummy, and a real deal at $10.95 given typical Hawaii pricing and the large portions. Neither my husband nor I came close to finishing off the large portions. I imagine we'll each get an extra lunch or two from our left overs. Lots of options on the menu at this busy Thai Restaurant, all similarly reasonably priced -- though I must admit we were both a bit surprised when a glance at our receipt showed that we'd paid $4 each for the small bottles of cold water we'd grabbed from their refrigerator case. Had we not gulped down most of them already, we'd have checked out some cheaper options like, perhaps, water from their self-serve soda machine. The location is perfect if you're visiting the Foster Botanical Gardens or the Liliuokalani Gardens, and especially if you want to visit both, as Bangkok Chef is located between the two gems tucked away in the city. According to google maps, Bangkok Chef is 0.2 miles from the entrance of Foster Botanical Gardens -- an easy, flat walk on with roomy sidewalks and well-marked crosswalks (with lights) to get you across 1 or two busy streets -- and 0.3 miles in the other direction to get to the entrance of the lovely, former private gardens of Queen Liliuokalani. We'd caught the 10:30 am free-with-admission tour ($5.00/adult Hawai'i visitors, $3 for locals) at the Foster Botanical Gardens (that lasts about an hour and a half), and were pretty hungry by the time we walked the short distance (0.2 mi) to Bangkok Chef. I didn't check the restrooms, but front of the house was plain but functional & clean. There seemed sufficient parking in front despite their brisk business at 12:30 in the afternoon. It seemed like there were plenty of locals who'd walked in, plus a lot of take out pre-orders that were there & gone very quickly. If it weren't for the tiny $4.00 bottled water & the lack of air conditioning, I would have given them 5 stars (based on yummy food, large portions, and the reasonable prices on the food) read more

This is a no-nonsense, no frills, fast-casual Thai food spot. I almost always come here after a full day of hiking, especially when it's been raining. There's a comfort in Thai food, and even though this place may not be THE BEST, it is consistent, fast, and cheap. Plus the veggies are fresh, and that's a good sign. I usually order by phone and pick it up about 10 mins later. I've even ordered by phone while standing in a long line, and then by the time I got to the register my food was ready. I like to call that "skills." ;) It's a welcoming place, open garage-like door (some of us like to call it "garage-door Thai") and plenty of seating. There are about 5 parking stalls, so this is why I usually pick up. Plus, I live nearby and would rather eat it on the comfort of my own couch watching How I Met Your Mother. If the stalls are full, there is always street parking. So some dishes I like to order that give that warm "hell yea" feeling: -Thai basil chicken -Pork panang curry -pad ki mao -green curry All of these dishes have a Thai flare, and the stir-fried dishes have some Chinese flare along with them. I frequent the Nu'uanu Bangkok Chef at least monthly because it's a triple threat kind of eatery. It's convenient, priced-right, and delicious! Honestly, over the years the prices have slowly gone up but you can still get most of their curries, noodle dishes, and chicken dishes for under $10. I've tried many of their menu offerings and everything is good. My favorite dishes include the pad si ew (chow fun like noodles stir fried w/ broccoli and chicken) and cashew nut chicken. I really love their curries too, the yellow is mild with potato, carrots, and choice of meat/tofu. Their red curry is super winnahs with the perfect spice level (I don't like too spicy). It comes w/ eggplant, bamboo shoots, choice meat/tofu, basil, onion, peppers and get it with sticky rice (for 50cents more)! Also their spring rolls are so good, perfectly fried, and comes with cucumber, lettuce, and mint. Whenever I have a cold I crave the Tom Yum soup, which is fish/tomato/lemon grass based with mushrooms and shrimp. I find it very soothing and the spiciness helps clear my sinuses. The only downside is parking is very limited (to a few stalls) angled in front of the restaurant. However, there's always the neighboring walgreens lot. Plenty of seating indoors, but I usually just call in take out and the food is ready in 10 minutes! It's a no frills type of place and service is efficient. The food used to be really good here and I would drive from Mililani just to get their curry and pad Thai. The other day I was in the area and got take out for the family. The prices went up and their portions went down. The pad thai was just OK (a little mushy), the green curry had no taste and only 1 piece of chicken, and their shrimp noodle salad was so sour that I had to stir fry it with more veggies and shrimp and add in some other seasonings so we could eat it. The spring rolls were fine, that was the best thing we got. I don't remember having any complaints, I wonder if they got a new cook. Bangkok Chef is a popular Thai chain in Honolulu. This location on Nuuanu Avenue is the original shop. It is easy to locate as the storefront is painted bright green. I was nearby and looking for a lunch spot, so I decided to check Bangkok Chef out for the first time. The restaurant has a few spaces in front of the shop. Though the parking is VERY tight. It was a good thing it was a Sunday since there are a couple of other businesses that utilize this parking. But Bangkok Chef is the only one of them open on Sunday. Restaurant interior is utilitarian. If you are looking for ambiance, you won't find here. I did notice that the restaurant seems to have expanded into a space next door to offer additional seating. The order setup is fast food style. You pay at the counter and wait for your food. Thai food tends to be higher priced than other Asian cuisines, but I found the prices here to be reasonable. You can get a filling meal here for $8. I was dining with my dad so we got two entrees to share. Ordered the Panang pork curry ($7.95) and chicken pad kee mao ($9). The food took a while to come out. I would estimate 20-30 minutes. Bangkok Chef has a bustling takeout business. So I would recommend calling in your order or be prepared to wait a bit. The meals were served in styrofoam containers filled with tons of food. The portions are large. You could probably share one meal and be full. The Panang pork curry was decent. Could have used a little more spice, but tasty and filling. The pad mee kao is basically a Thai chow fun for those unfamiliar. Rice noodles were nice and fresh. Chicken used appears to be lean chicken breast which was alright. Not a whole lot of flavor. I would rather use beef or pork instead though. My suggestion would be to douse some of the curry over the pad kee mao for more flavor. If you are looking for large portions of decent Thai food, Bangkok Chef is the place to go in Honolulu. 8 years ago, this was my first thai place. A few days ago, I took my family here and this was my 2nd time. It's a decent size restaurant located across 7 eleven gas station, around the corner of Walgreens. It gets busy during peak hours. Parking is really limited and very tight. We parked by Walgreens to make life easier. Shhh.. The restaurant is spacious. There were a lot of choices on the menu. It took us a while to decide. Finally, we made our final decisions: chicken cashew with rice, chicken pad thai, pork curry, and chicken yellow curry. Our food were ready in 10 minutes~. We were soo hungry we started eating it before I can take a picture. The chicken pad thai was more on the sour side than sweet side. My mom noticed the noodles were pho noodles. I thought it seemed a little different. The chicken curry was better than the pork curry. The pork had too much fat on the meat and there were too much potatoes. The chicken cashew was a little spicy. Overall the food wasn't too salty. It was quite yummy. This is a cheap eats place. Big portion for under $10. Our total came out to $40 for 4 plates. Okay Thai with subpar parking and brisk takeout. This was my first COVID takeout meal, and as I was craving Thai, could easily order via Bite Squad, and it was nearby my workplace, I figured why not? I bought two things that I can easily judge Thai places by- tofu pad thai ($9.95) and Thai iced coffee ($3.75). The tofu pad Thai wasn't the best I've had, but it did the trick. The noodles were really sticky. The Thai iced coffee was solid though- perfect ratio of condensed milk sweetness to coffee. Would I order from here again? If I must.
