vietnamese dessert.
bambu.
if youve never had this before, you will get the idea what its all about when you walk up to the store...you will see people walking out with FISTFULLS of cups that looks like science projects gone wrong...green, clear, little black and white looking things all shoved into one clear plastic cup...this place is insane. lines are long when its busy and finding parking around the area sucks. BUT IM ABSOLUTELY HOOKED ON THIS STUFF!!!!
and its not only me...ive overheard people that drove from Oakland to grab their fix of vietnamese dessert at this place, and i concur that its well worth it!
having lived in san jose for the past decade, ive been to a handful of these bambu dessert shops in the south bay...when i heard that there was one opening up in the city, i was ecstatic!!! finally, the sweet, milky, chewy, crunchy, icy, fruity, syrupy, nutty, pandany goodness that this dessert offered was available locally to those in the east bay/SF.
swing by here when youre craving something sweet, but "different"...
this is as exotic of a dessert that ive ever had, but in no way is it foreign...from the first glance it might look a bit on the wild side, but as soon as you take your first spoonful or gulp of any of their 1000 desserts, your tastes buds will remember having something similar in the past, but definitely not all together at the same time. (its not really 1000 desserts on the menu...but there are A LOT)
definitely a bit chaotic when you walk in during rush hour, but you have to understand that the ingredients that go into each and every dessert that they have at bambu comes freshly made daily! with the amount of legwork and labor that goes into these drinks, id equate it to "2 or 3 line chefs, 2 or 3 sous chefs, and one executive chef" working diligently in the back to accommodate all the orders pouring into their kitchen from morning until closing time.
as a regular there already, here are my rules to a successful Bambu Dessert Experience.
rule 1: don't clog up the line while deciding what you want. stand aside and read the menu to yourself to see what you want before going up to order.
rule 2: be patient...nothing good in life comes easy. these desserts usually have at least 3 different ingredients/components to them so it takes time putting them together.
rule 3: "if" they run out of an ingredient, just suck it up and try again the next time. the first time i went, they ran out of coconut juice for my drink! you figure its like McDonalds running out of cheeseburgers, but if you see how busy these folks get throughout the day, you will understand that YES, fresh ingredients can "run out" from time to time.
rule 4: dont drink your frozen drink too fast. just trust me on this one...i learned the hard way and i dont want you to do the same.
rule 5: bring a handful of friends with you. this is the best way to really experience and try out all the different drinks this place has to offer. groups of 5 people are perfect...everyone order 2 drinks each...next thing you know, you had 10 drinks that everyone can share at one time. thats winning!!!! read more
