A craving for sushi a little later in the night led us to Bamboo Fish for a nice Saturday night date. The area inside is cozy and warm but I was really surprised by how high the ceilings are, didn't really affect my dining experience but I found it interesting. The service was prompt and friendly, our orders came quite quickly which was very nice considering how hungry we were. To start we ordered a Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna and Salmon Sashimi appetizer. The salmon was very high quality and came with 6 pretty thick pieces (had a couple before taking the picture). The crispy rice dish was also very good, maybe I would've preferred a little more sauce for the rice to soak up as it was a bit of a mouthful, but the flavor and texture were good. The rolls we ordered were the SF Giants, 49ers, and the Titanic, all of which were very well made with healthy portions of fish and good flavor. As to pricing, sushi is getting noticeably expensive and that is especially true of getting sushi in South San Jose. There may be no getting around that anymore and while I wasn't completely floored by the bill, it definitely made me remember why I'm not getting sushi everyday! However Bamboo Fish is a perfect neighborhood sushi spot with good quality and fresh ingredients, and I would love to come back.

So this could have been a 5 Star Yelp review. But downgrading due to the lack of service on a Friday night. I blame management, and in this case, it could just be a family owned and run business. We only had to wait 10minutes to get a table so that was good. However, the hostess taking our order was so flustered as she was the only one that was taking orders with a packed house! There were two other boys that were either cleaning the tables and seating people but not sure if they were trained to take orders. We had two friends join us spur of the moment that evening so we had a great time. No rush by the restaurant to move on. We stayed there for over 1.5hours. Not really because we wanted to, but it seemed it took a very long time to make the sushi rolls. And we had to keep tracking down our hostess to get some of the items that we ordered. So now for the good stuff. The taste of almost every roll was phenomenal. The only one I didn't like was the Slow Burn Roll, which had an interesting texture to it and no burn to it. But the other rolls and the Sashimi platter were excellent. The crispy rice with spicy tuna was to die for! One of the few places that I have been to that actually serve this. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any of the rolls on the menu. Total bill for 4 people ended up around $170 including 2 beers and hot tea. We were not even asked if we wanted dessert nor did we want to stay any longer. But it was great to watch the Warriors game that was on while we ate. A very cozy restaurant and the locals know this has great food. I hope the owners take note of this and at least get someone else who can wait tables.

Our favorite sushi spot. My wife and I came here on Friday night and this place was quickly packed. Service was fast and top notch as always. My favorite roll called the SJ Earthquakes is no longer on the regular menu, but it is on the daily specials menu. My wife wanted the low carb wrapped in cucumber option, but unfortunately they don't do that here. Hopefully they do that in the near future.

TAKE OUT: Sushi take out during COVID 19. I walked in and a girl was on the phone. Another girl didn't acknowledge my presence right away. She stared at me and I had to take initiative and ask if I can see a menu. There are plastic clear screens setup as barriers which is good and hand sanitizer available at the counter. Credit card machine is there to put in your own card to minimize hand contact. Parking out front was easy. It's a small shopping plaza. FOOD: Sushi itself was 3 stars for A ok. Got two deep fried rolls. I liked the roll with salmon and cream cheese.

Came to Bamboo Fish with my parents the night of Christmas Eve Eve. We got seated right away and the food was quick to come out. The food was so good and fresh! The rolls we had were very flavorful. It wasn't too busy being that it's Saturday night. The restaurant is cozy and clean. Good vibes!! We will definitely be back.

I attempted to order the volcano roll. I have an allergy to soy so I asked for no unagi which was questioned by the waitress including me having to zoom into the roll picture to show her the sauce that I didn't want on it. I asked to add on avocado outside (which was a menu option on their QR code) for 3 or 4 dollars and substitute shrimp for the salmon. I was told this would be an expensive roll $30 and the chef might get mad of the requests and not to order it. Idc about the price, id have order it anyways if she didn't make such a big deal. I ended up ordering a STR #2 because of her push back. It was okay

PAPER PLATES & MICROWAVED EDAMAME... If you want ALL the red flags read on This was such a disappointing experience. The bottom line, this was a POOR quality restaurant. I'll admit, the staff was great! You could tell they were short handed and everyone was working hard. They were kind and friendly. Everything looked great when we first entered. At first glance, this place looks super trendy with their fun lighting & Japanese decor. Once you're seated however, you'll noticed all the tables were covered in paper table cloth. Dollar tree paper table cloth. And the appetizer plates were also paper!! PAPER?! Really?! That was red flag #1. Next we ordered and my partner noticed that a waiter was pulling out something from a microwave in the kitchen (due to them leaving the back curtain open). Then a few minutes later when the edamame was brought to our table he could tell it was frozen! We immediately send it back and let them know it doesn't taste right. Their manager follows up with us to ask if everything was ok and we tell her it tasted frozen. What does she do? Goes back to the kitchen and my partner watches her pick up the bowl, stick it in the microwave, and a few minutes later... what do you know?! Another bowl of frozen microwaved edamame!! If you don't see a problem with that at a restaurant, you're the problem. Red flag #3 the sushi fell apart on us all night because they either used low grade rice or old rice. OH and the kappa maki had regular cucumber in it instead of kyuri (Japanese cucumber) Who knows if the fish was fresh? If we get food poisoning I'll update you... Overall, you're a RESTAURANT in a time where people are excited to be dining in again. Don't serve gyoza and other dishes on paper plates! Don't serve microwaved food, and if you do be smart enough to cover up the back room. Just do better please. And if you're a diner who doesn't mind a tacky and frankly cheap dinner experience then enjoy the food. We hope you have a better dinner there than we did. Update 3/27/2022 My partner did get food poisoning yesterday, the morning after we had eaten there. The only reason I was ok because I took a few bites of my sushi and did not finish it. Eat at your own risk.

I don't usually venture out to this part of San Jose, but when I do it's because Natalie C. lives over here. :) With casual sushi restaurants, it's all about two things: quality and price. Quality wise, NINJA's pretty solid. Dinner sashimi assortment had generous cuts of fish (four pieces of each: salmon, tuna, yellow-tail, halibut) and tasted pretty fresh. Also came with salad, miso soup and rice. Price wise, that was around ~$25/26, pretty standard. We also shared a dragon roll, which I thought was good, but it was $9 for 5 pieces. Their special rolls range from ~$15-20, eeek.. we steered clear from those.. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back, but maybe if Natalie C. wants to! read more

Our friend took us here because she knows the owners. It was fantastic. We started with the miso soup. Large Sapporo of course. The must have here is anything with their spicy tuna. It is so good. The best way to experience the spicy tuna is by having a spicy tuna hand roll, it's stuffed with the stuff. The baked scallop roll was great. We got the crazy fire and Iron man, of the two we liked the crazy fire more. We also had the Santa Teresa and Spider-Man as well, delicious. My tongue and my stomach had a great time there, so yours will too. I tend to produce a lot of saliva, so I had to have extra napkins and an extra shirt. This place has so many rolls to try, it will be fun trying them all. read more

I believe I was here before the current restaurant. I'm either case, they have redone the interior. This is a good family sushi restaurant. It does remind me of a cafeteria. The tables are pretty sparse, the music is pop, and there's a soda refrigerator in the corner. I find they are slow to bus the tables - so you see dishes on tables after the diners have long gone. Sushi dishes all look very nice. Prices are $5 for sushi with an assortment of $15 rolls. I imagine everyone that eats here probably lives in the neighborhood. That said, the staff could be a tad more friendly. On an end note - the lighting is too harsh and detracts from family style ambience. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by for a bite. You decide. After reading the other reviews, I would note that they initially screwed up my soft shell crab order and brought fried tofu instead. These mistakes can be pretty devastating for a business with tight margins. I bet the high prices come from absorbing too many unnecessary kitchen screw ups. The management should take note. read more

We went last Saturday Jan 31st, and sat at the bar. Very cool place! Enjoyed watching the sushi chefs. Started off with the Miso. We both loved it. The TNT roll, VERY spicy came first. Of course that kind of killed my taste buds for awhile. In the future I'll make sure to recommend that comes last lol. It was very good,too spicy for my husband though. We also liked the spicy tuna roll, creamy crab roll LOVED the yammy yam. Sorry to say the teriyaki chicken roll was really bad. I had to ask the sushi chef what the roll was,hard to tell, very dried up chicken. It was very busy and slight delays for our dishes but to be expected since it was a Saturday night. The wait staff was good too. I wished they had a decent chard but hey it's a Sushi place so not going to complain! We will be back. My daughter loves bento boxes, especially teriyaki chicken, so we will test that out. I hope it isn't like the chicken that was in the roll though. It was so bad! read more

Very happy with this place. The service is awesome, there's a good selection of sake's, they're friendly, and it's small enough to feel quaint, but big enough to host a large party. My wife and I have been in 4 times so far, and have been treated wonderfully, served fast, and even got a few little extras here and there from the chef. J and Steven are always very nice to talk to, and make beautiful sushi. After having our orders messed up and missing items multiple times, and having a rude server experience at Almaden Sushi, this is our new place...not to mention, the quality and presentation is much better as well. I unfortunately did not take a lot of pictures cause I was busy eating their delicious food. I came in for lunch with my two boys and we had a awesome time. The boys had the kids bentos and the portions were just right. I tried the spicy tuna roll (8 pcs), baked mussels and the Jalopeno Bomb. It was all amazing. Ninja Sushi is the second sushi restaurant in my area but now first on my list. Since they are brand new it's a bit intimidating going in when is sparsely populated. The food was reasonably priced and delicious, the service was great and there is plenty of room for the kids. It's a great neighborhood sushi joint. Come try it out!! read more

BLUF: My go to sushi lunch spot in Almaden. They have great fresh nigiri and sashimi. The restaurant is clean and the staff is professional. I was first very skeptical about trying a sushi restaurant called "ninja". However, with a recommendation from a friend and the high reviews, I decided to try this restaurant out. As the restaurant is brand new, the interior is clean and neat. There is a sushi bar in the center and tables around the walls. There are two large TVs on with sports and a full selection of Asian lagers. On my two visits, I have tried their chirashi and town #3 special. The chirashi is a great alternative for someone looking for something other than a speciality roll but with more sushi than a bento box. It is a bowl of sushi rice topped with an assortment of sashimi. Their town #3 special consists of three slices of tuna and five slices of the chef's choice of nigiri. The assortment was great and the fish was equally fresh as the chirashi. Ultimately, I will be returning to this restaurant for a nice lunch. Oh and they even have Marianne's ice cream (the Santa Cruz local) for dessert! read more

Mediocre and overpriced sushi restaurant. The fish doesn't taste fresh. If you're a California roll and tempura ordering sushi goer, then this may be your place. Their bento boxes are a good deal. But, I wouldn't come here with high expectations of good sushi. Service is nice. read more

Great to-go dinner! Clean, easy, delicious. I've been craving sushi during this pandemic and decided to give sushi to-go a try. We used to eat here all the time pre-pandemic. They make ordering to-go super easy. Their packaging is very good. Cold food in one bag, hot food in another. And they put cardboard on the bottom of the bags so your sushi isn't sliding all over the place. Anytime my husband asks what I want him to pickup I say "Bamboo". Thanks for the great meals during these times! read more

I ordered twice here so far...the first time is was ok. The beef teriyaki was inedible. I wouldn't even give it to my dogs. The rice was undercooked or dried out. For $100 take out, I had my hopes up for better food quality. read more

I've found my sushi spot in south San Jose! I recently moved to south San Jose, and let me tell you it's super hard finding food places that aren't junk food or American food. I wanted Japanese food so I found this place on Yelp. I like that it isn't far from where I live and it's in a quiet small plaza right behind MO's Restaurant. I was surprised that it wasn't busy on a Sunday so we got seated right as we got in. The setting as you enter the restaurant is dim lights, with the sushi bar right as you enter and tables surrounding the bar. This can be a possible date night if you wanted to get away somewhere that isn't too crowded and good quality food. I treated my family out, so we had two large Sapporo beer, and ordered four rolls since there was four of us. These rolls are shareable and pretty big. You can even do three rolls and my family and I would of been good off of that. The customer service was on point! Very attentive with refilling our waters, and also ordering our drinks. The food was amazing. I loved each one of the rolls and it's also a plus that these menus come with pictures! I like pictures, I'm a visual learner so I wanna see what I'll be eating. LOL! Pricing of each sushi roll varies between $11-$18 depending on the types of fish that will be in the roll. I do think that the black sauce that was on top of two of our rolls were a bit too strong that it blew us off, best be without this sauce. If anything it needs to be sweeter. Overall, great place for dates, dinner or lunch. Customer service and food were amazing. I would definitely be coming back soon! I recommend anyone to this place! read more

I'm not a fan of warm sushi. Went here today for lunch and it seemed like they had no A/C inside since the restaurant was so hot with little flies flying in our face when we were eating. We ordered the chicken karaage since it was 20% off with check in. The chicken was dry and the batter wasn't crispy. My husband tried to get the fish eggs with shiso leaves and they didn't have shiso leaves! What sushi restaurant doesn't carry shiso? I got one of the specialty rolls that came with crunch on it. I asked if they could put extra crunch on top and they ended up charging me $1 for it. Unfortunately my roll was rolled like like a burrito and not a sushi roll so each piece took 3 bites to finish instead of being able to put the entire piece in your mouth. So first bite..was literally a glob of cream cheese. Next bite was a glob of avocado....then a small bit of shrimp. The roll was so hot, the fish on top was mushy and not firm. 1 star for the crunch since they use dried shallots and not just tempura bits. 1 more star for the waitress as she was really apologetic in not having a few other items on the menu. She gave us free edamame since they ran out of a few things we ordered. However, other restaurants give away edamame for free as part of the dining experience. I was really hoping this place would be awesome since it's near my grandparent's house. But dining in a restaurant that's about 90 degrees inside when it's 100 degrees outside, flies in your face, and warm fish just isn't a great dining experience. Lunch for 2 for 1 roll, 2 nigiri, 1 beer and a chicken karaage was $55. read more

We eat in and order to go regularly. We are very serious about our rice to fish ratio and they always go easy on the rice. They acknowledge our requests for substitutions inside the rolls and the fish is always fresh. The only trouble is waiting until they open at five to eat! The service has always been great, and a lot of regulars come in which says a lot about a place. A few of their specials are worth trying as well, I fantasize about their raiders roll, sharks roll and many others. read more

I am updating my review. I didn't like the food when the restaurant first opened. My husband gave immediate constructive feedback, and the owner did take some of his tips. I had lunch there today's and the rolls ere tasty. We shared the teriyaki chicken. The teriyaki chicken was excellent, probably the best teriyaki chicken we had ever had. There were no fat, chicken tasted fresh, and had excellent texture and flavor. read more

My favorite place to go for sushi in bay area!! I've never had a bad experience here. food was absolutely wonderful, from preparation to presentation, very pleasing. Servers provide excellent service. Highly recommend it. You are doing yourself a disservice if you don't stop by here and try at least. I've went pretty much every sushi restaurants in bay area, but this place is absolutely the best sushi place to go!! read more

I used to love coming here and even sometimes ordering take out from this place however recently this place has turned into absolute garbage. Microwaved edamame and clearly the RAW FISH was not fresh. When asked to change what I have ordered due to the reasons being said I was given the worst attitude as well. Not returning here ever again. read more

Went here last night and had a great dinner. The restaurant management tends to switch to new people and owners, but either way it always impresses and gets better every time. I was a big fan of the previous owners and sad to see them go. However tonight we tried Ninja sushi under the new owners and have to say it is still awesome! The rolls and nigiri were all excellent. Some new great options as well. Looking forward to the new menu when they change the name to Bamboo Fish. Wish the owners much success as this will be awesome for Almaden. read more

We have been coming here since it opened, the service and food is excellent! We always bring our kids and sit at the sushi bar and they always make us feel welcome. Our favorite rolls are the hamachi lover and the slow burn. If you love sushi, this is a must try! read more

Stopped by for a Sunday lunch. The place wasn't exactly packed with people, just 2 other tables and us. It took about 20 minutes just to get our order in, the service is so incredibly slow. With a name like Ninja Sushi you'd think they'd do flips over the bar and tables to get to us quick, not be snails and avoid us every chance they got. My son and I got ramen, while my wife and daughter ordered a bento box and sushi. The ramen was pretty low flavor (even the spicy ramen that I got). The sushi rolls were overpriced but still good size. So the food was ok overall in quality, but even asking for an extra napkin wasn't going to happen as you literally had to jump in front of the waiters to get attention. This restaurant is a nice place to go but it is noisy. It is not a quiet little get away where you can have a romantic conversation. The food is plentiful, our waiter checked to see how we were doing often and since this was a Friday night I would say that the food we ordered came quickly. I ordered the Donkatsu which is the breaded pork cutlet, a bowl of rice and soup and salad. I also ordered the combination tempura appetizer but asked that it come with the main course. Waiter did no problem. My mother ordered the teriyaki chicken dinner and a side of California Roll. The roll came with 8 pieces (most places I've been to serve 6). My father ordered what they call the Santa Teresa roll. I'm not sure as to the # if pieces. I want to say 10 but I know it was no less then 8. The food was served to us just under 20 minutes from ordering. Thus was fine as we could enjoy our soup and salad. The tuna, shrimp and salmon used I the roll were fresh. No after taste and melted kin your mouth. The chicken teriyaki was very tender and moist. The Donkatsu was a thick pork cutlet which was slightly overcooked and because of this caused it to be a bit tough. If they would tenderize the piece of meat prior to cooking this would help thinning the meat and possibly cut the time cooking it. As everything else was very good I'm hoping the preparation was a rarity. We would definitely go back to this restaurant. Ever since Shins closed we have been looking for a local restaurant to replace our Japanese food craving. At least one person orders Donkatsu in our party. This restaurant was a pleasant surprise and with the experience we had enjoying the food and service we will be returning again in the near future. read more

If I knew that I would've just ordered a different roll as the price didn't change. Rolls were okay but overpriced at $18 per roll. And even more so with my missing topping. I'm happy that they didn't put sesame on the rolls as we have an allergy.

Glad to see the food was fresh even with the holiday schedule. Last day off of holiday vacation and my usual place was not open. Picked Bamboo as a last ditch option to get something different than the holiday chow I was getting over the last 10 days. All aspects that I saw were clean and tidy. We sat at the bar so saw the chef work. No complaints and nothing to worry about in regards to his methods. Got a few different rolls and each was distinctly different. Considering the components are limited with sushi, they found good combinations. Also, some ingredients were not standard which was refreshing. Service was friendly, food was tasty and the atmosphere was comfortable. I would try again to see if this place becomes our new standard sushi joint. Happy to have another sushi place nearby! Miso soup was good and salad was crisp with a perfect amount of dressing. I really enjoyed the tempura veggies and shrimp. Usually I don't enjoy tempura because it's just too much deed fried taste, but they did a really nice job with their batter. The sauce served with it was delicious too! Had the seaweed salad as well and it was delicious! We got 3 rolls and all were good, nothing super impressive, but I do like how nicely they grill their unagi. I did feel that they went a little too heavy with the tobiko... Also, I agree with a previous review, the wasabi isn't very powerful and I had to add a lot to finally get flavor.
