Food was great! It's a solid spot overall. The nigiri had this nice green onion, oil, and wasabi topping on top. Definitely would recommend the nigiri salmon combo. The spider roll is solid. It's one of my favorite rolls and it didn't disappoint. I would also recommend the kakuna roll, it's a seared salmon roll. Service was fast and food came out pretty quick too. I would come back being local to the area. Place is cozy and chill too.
Sushi quality / price ratio is good. Most signature raw sushi rolls are about $15 with the most at $20 (Mukbang and Boujee) and they're good quality rolls. There are 9 tables inside, relatively small restaurant. We like getting sushi here, luckily they have multiple locations. Online ordering is simple and quick
Food: everything we ordered was delicious. I'm definitely coming back here. They have a vegetarian section of the menu. Location: easy to find. It has a small parking lot. Service: was fine especially because it wasn't busy on a weeknight we went. Clean simple inside.
I don't live near this location but every time I am in the area I make it a point to come here. The food is great, the portions are great, the price is right.
Food: 5 stars- my husband ordered the Sashimi salad which turned out to be a bigger portion than what the waiter described. It was a nice surprise. The salad dressing collected at the bottom so it was stringer has you eat more. I recommend mixing as you eat so it's more even my husband didn't like the sourness of the dressing as much, but I really liked it. I ordered the Saigon Summer roll, which turned out to be keto (no rice), a pleasant surprise for my husband because he's trying to be keto. Second time, we had Hokaido roll, Pepperfin Salmon, and chirashi. Pepperfin has a light sour and sweet dressing, which I liked. Everything was very tasty. Ambiance: 4 stars -clean but the second time we went we noticed the cleaning agent had a weird smell. There's not a lot of decorations to have any ambience, but it's family and group friendly because there's plenty of room. Service: 3 stars -we came here twice and both times the service could have been better but we came back because of the food.

Either way, it felt like a clean open space. At sushi places, often you can see the chefs preparing the sushi places but the kitchen is in the back. Service is solid. We usually get the same person and he is helpful. Wish the menu was better designed and could see more images of the dishes. The place seems designed more for takeout than actual dine-in. It was a plan room with too much metal and not enough sound proofing. The food tasted good but wasn't worth the end price of ~$25 roughly. I would have gotten the same from a Japanese grocery store for half the price. It was sad that it wasn't as amazing as the pictures online led it to be. The food presentation was pretty so props to them for that.
Such a great deal! I always get my to-go orders for family gatherings. It was $60 for this whole tray which is such a steal in this economy! They have some good options with cream cheese (not my favorite but still good.) The store is fairly small, I have never actually sat inside so I can't say much about it.
Was in the area and came for their happy hour. I got the 2 maki rolls and a miso soup for $11z Salmon Avocado rolls (5/5): These were fat and make the most money. Tekka Rolls (3/5): A bit small, but can't complain about the price. Overall if you love sushi at an affordable price, this is the place to go.
Love the food here! Consistent and delicious. This time we got the Kakuna roll, Orange blossom, and pork belly bao. The sushi always tastes of good quality. I think the pork belly bao is a new item. The flavors are good, but the pork belly was dry. Appreciate the quick and friendly service here. There's a small parking lot behind the restaurant.

Came here with the wife around 7:45pm on a Friday. It was pretty empty, but I'm not complaining. It's tucked away on the side of a strip mall. Plenty of parking. We ordered 4 rolls and a chicken katsu bento. The rolls were all pretty good. They were a pretty generous size too. Flavor was good, but I wouldn't call any of them premium. For the price and the size, I expected good not great, and that's exactly what we got. The katsu also was pretty good. Good enough to order again at least. We'll definitely be back to try a few other items. For the price, you can't beat it! Place is extremely small, but given the number of people on a Friday night I don't think this place ever gets too crowded. Sushi is probably not the first choice out here in East San Jose. All in all, good not great, excellent pricing, good service and a very clean unisex bathroom to boot! read more

5! 5! 5!!!! this hidden gem has become my new favorite place. The menu is huge with classics like Lion King and Rainbow rolls along with fusion as San Jose knows how to do like a Mango Chili roll. They also have ramen, udon, bento, and appetizers like a pork belly bao (which was bomb!) The Mango Chili roll was so scrumptious but I would prefer no nuts and more tajin on top. The service was prompt and friendly. My husband loved the Lion King and the Kakuna rolls. Fresh, flavorful, and great prices with plenty of free parking. There is plenty of indoor seating but I could see this place getting packed during peak time. Despite the Taylor Swift music, ambiance was calm on a Friday at lunch. read more

I visited Kakuna before and had to bring my boyfriend here. We were craving sushi, and I'm glad we chose this place. We ordered the Charizard, Mango Chili, and Salmon Lovers rolls. My favorite was the Charizard, while my boyfriend's favorite is the Mango Chili. The Charizard roll was delicious, especially with the hot Cheetos on top. Although the hot Cheetos were soggy, I still loved it. I even wanted to get more because it was so tasty. I love that it's spicy with a crunchy topping and a flavorful sauce. The Mango Chili offers a perfect mix of sweet and spicy. With every bite, you taste the sweetness of the mango and the heat of jalapeno. Nothing is overpowering; it's a well-balanced combination. Plus, the creaminess from the avocado helps balance the sweet and spicy flavors. Since I love salmon, I had to get the Salmon Lovers roll. I enjoy sashimi, and in my opinion, it's perfectly sliced. It's topped with a bit of wasabi. The sashimi truly melts in your mouth. Kakuna Sushi is a great place if you want quality sushi. The service was excellent, and they brought our sushi out as quickly as possible. We appreciate fast service. This spot is a must-visit for some good sushi. read more
Best sushi in our neighborhood! We love this spot as a weekly dinner option. They made great rolls and everything is fresh and made well. Our family likes to order 'pick up' as it's usually a stop before getting home from work. Sometimes the service is slower, but lately they've become more fluid with orders! I have never dined in their restaurant, but I'd be excited to take my family there one weekend. Our favorites are the Lion King roll, the vegetable tempura, and the ramen was delicious. read more

The meat in the pork belly bao is incredibly tender and the brown buns have a perfect crisp. This appetizer comes with these crispy things (idk not fried onions) and shredded cabbage underneath. There's a bit of thick sesame sauce on the inside of the buns which adds a sweet and nutty flavor. The escolar (butterfish) nigiri is pretty big and already comes with a tiny dollop of wasabi with green onion sauce on top. The unagi was a bit small but I like that the nigiri can be ordered individually. Orange blossom roll (salmon and avocado inside, salmon and tobiko outside) was good but pretty standard. Salmon taste is fairly mild (and not particularly creamy/buttery) but the actual fish pieces were sizeable and thick - each piece of the roll weighed about 40 grams if that means anything as far as portions go... read more

Had some money on Grubhub and decided to get some sushi. I can't comment on the service or ambiance as someone else picked it up for me, but in comparison to other places I've been the food seemed a little small portion-wise. I'm not really blaming them for this though, as this is something that seems to occur a lot in other sushi places. The sushi itself was alright, though there are probably better places to get it. We got the Nigiri Combo with a piece of salmon and tuna sashimi, which came in its own little box. Both of them were relatively decent, though I'm not entirely sure if that one, singular bit of sashimi is worth three dollars. Each piece of nigiri also came with a dollop of wasabi alongside the regular wasabi that's added to the side, which added a nice bit of spice to it. Overall, a relatively decent experience. I feel like there are better places to go to in San Jose so I'm unsure if I'd return, but it was nice to try anyway. read more

Quick and delicious sushi spot. Stopped for dinner its right off the 680 freeway. We got seated right away, food was served quickly and fresh! Plenty of food- Bento box was huge for a great price you cant beat this spot! We enjoyed everything left w fully bellies, satisfied service and meal. Will come back again soon!! read more
This is my second time coming here and the rolls are always so delicious! Kakuna has been my favorite and go to. Rainbow roll isn't as good but fish is still fresh. Good seating options and they were able to accommodate a large party. Service is nice, no complaints! read more
First time tryout g Kakuna sushi here in San Leandro And it did not disappoint the sushi rolls are huge fresh and delicious the ramen and the Ranen noodle soups the fresh grilled chicken in the soups oh my soo fresh and delicious the pork belly buns fresh tender juicy and delicious sashimi salad both salads did not distant the hand rolls were sooo delicious everything was fresh and HUGE portions trued a lot of the food items and I especially loved the d ed lobster roll our waiter Vincent was very attentive clearing the empty plates , bowls filling our cups with fresh water and offering v fresh lemon slices Vy also wax helping Vincent because I ordered so many dishes rolls literally we had to use the table by the 2 of us When that lobster roll came out oh my the lobster meat in that tempura si juicy and fresh it's a out of the way place drive 45 minutes from San Jose and I have no regrets I will definitely be back it's very clean the sushi very fresh and huge pieces of sushithey are only closed during lunch time but opened all 7 days a week you can come with a group of friends or as a couple or by yourself to enjoy the premium which is what I purchased allows you to order special items the tables are spaced enough to give you room to enjoy your fresh delicious All you can eat soups and sushi and salads Thank you Vincent. I've been here several times, and it's always a great experience. The sushi is incredibly fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared. Every roll I've tried has been full of flavor, and the quality is consistently excellent. If you're looking for a place with amazing sushi, I highly recommend giving this restaurant a try. Kakuna Sushi is located in a large plaza that has La Plaza Market but on the far right side of the shopping center. The parking is no issue because there is so much space. The restaurant is fairly small. But could accommodate a few parties of 6 or more. House Christian music playing throughout the place. Only one unisex restroom. My only gripe was today was 96° degrees and the door was open so flies would come in and bother you while eating. I am sure they had AC. Bento: served with gyoza, salad, rice, and orange slices. My mom ordered the beef short rib. A good portion of ribs. Tender and fatty. I added a California Roll +$4. They have a decent food list to add on to your bento for varying prices. The California Roll was good. The crab mix had some black pepper in it. They have a lot of different rolls to choose from raw to non-raw rolls. Kakuna Roll: Crab, spicy tuna, fried onion, torched salmon, spicy mayo, miso, unagi sauce, scallions, tobiko (3.5/5). This was recommended by our waiter. It was good but too saucy. Lobster Monster: tempura lobster, avocado, asparagus, Crab, ebi, pesto mayo, unagi sauce, arare, scallions (4/5). This was a large roll, so large that it fell over! Lol. Overall, and good place that has fresh tasting fish and unique rolls. We'll be back. read more

We love Kakuna Sushi!! My kids really enjoy the different rolls here, the price is right and the portion is big! Staff are friendly and attentive. We come here every time we crave for sushi and they don't disappoint! If my kids are happy, I'm happy! Keep up the good work Kakuna!! read more
