Pistachio baklava
Binh P.

Simple shop where you can drop in and get freshly made baklava and try a free sample as well. The staff is always so welcoming. They serve pistachio or walnut baklava in various sizes, but the smallest tray will set you back $30. Everyone that's tried has consistently agreed that this is the best baklava you can get in the bay area. I also enjoyed the walnut a lot more than the pistachio because I found it less sweet. It's a great way to introduce people to baklava, but I can't eat too many because it's usually too sweet for me.

Best Baklava in the city! It was a hit at my Christmas party and everyone loved it since it wasn't too sweet. Their pistachio one is my family's new fave! I ordered through Instagram DM and it was super easy (both ordering and pickup). Everyone was super sweet and I def will be getting more! I love how you can actually see into the kitchen and how delicious the store smells

We're literally writing this review right in front of the baklava shop. This is our second time here, and this time we tried the walnut baklava. It's absolutely incredible. I actually liked the walnut one even more -- unbelievably light, crisp, and delicious. It's the kind of tray that's worth driving all the way from San Jose for. Huge compliments to the people who make it. Truly outstanding. Turkish approved!

This is a truly small-batch production where every piece of baklava is handcrafted with care. A sweet--but not overly sweet--treat made with love. If you follow the owner on Instagram, you'll even see him travel all the way to Turkey to harvest his own pistachios. It doesn't get more authentic than that! As someone who works in hospitality, I've had the joy of receiving boxes of this baklava from the owner to share with our team. He's that thoughtful! TIP - do call and order ahead so you get the flavor you want!

I had bookmarked Baklavastory a long time ago and finally made it here after work one day. I was just looking to try the baklava myself but sadly they do not sell singles, only trays so I was a bit disappointed to find that out. The employee did not let me leave empty handed however. She gave me a sample of their two baklavas, pistachio and walnut and both were excellent. Tasted super fresh and both really let the nut shine. If you're strapped for time and looking for a gift to bring to a party or dinner this is the place. Baklavastory has gotchu baby! I was going to an overnight with friends at a vacation home and I knew this was my chance. I called Baklavastory to place an order and 20 minutes later my partner was able to pick up a tray for me. They only had walnut pistachio at the time so I didn't have to hem and haw over which one to pick of their two flavors. I love that the walnut baklava is chock full of walnuts. They definitely don't skimp on the nuts and the proportion of honey with nuts and that flaky pastry dough is *chef's kiss.* We had some of the leftover baklava with coffee the next morning and it HIT! I still think about it occasionally.  Do yourself a favor and find an occasion to buy some baklava to share with family and friends and try for yourself.

I find an absolutely unbelievable that I have not left this place a review. I guess I am just reviewing the hitters today because every place is getting five stars for being absolutely the best thing in that category. Having been to Istanbul, my friend, and I had pretty high expectations when someone said this place was worth visiting. In addition, I'm not a big fan of sweets at all, so I honestly didn't think that I would eat more than one let alone any size tray whatsoever. The owner is such a sweetheart, as soon as you walk in you are immediately assaulted in the best way possible with a fresh baklava. He hand harvest the fresh pistachios from Turkey directly and walnuts from a specialty farm north of Sacramento and shares all the details with you. He makes them on the spot, but if you do have a big order, definitely order in advance. I literally have not tasted such flaky and phenomenally flavored baklava ever. Not even in Turkey. I think recently, the shipment of pistachios for this year has been held up, so only walnut is available, but I hope this changes in a few weeks!

Best baklava I've ever had. A quality-obsessed, small business model with an ethic toward community (everyone who walks through the door gets one!). Make sure to order ahead! The pistachio baklava are my favorite.

I rarely eat baklava, but really enjoyed the flakiness, decadent-ness, and texture of the pistachio sample that I tried. It was literally warm to the touch, a testament to how fresh all of their baklava is. I wish we could have the option of purchasing lower quantities, because it's quite heavy with a good amount of oil and sugar. I also thought prices were quite steep ($25 for a 12 piece tray)...I'm just thinking in comparison to a pineapple bun from Pineapple King or egg tart from Holy Nata

Sylvie P.

Best baklava I've ever tried! So decadent and flaky on the outside! I went on a Saturday and ordered this small tray and got very lucky as I only had to wait for 15min! They're very popular and sell all sizes of trays! Call/book in advance if ordering for a big party

Emily F.

Popped in for some baklava and was able to try a piece of walnut baklava and pistachio baklava. It was fresh, warm, and so so good. It's a small place to walk in and no seating. The owner was warm and welcoming and so friendly. He also said the baklava is baked fresh all day every 20 minutes. It was a bit later in the day and was hoping to buy a single piece but can only buy trays. They were out of pistachio trays already so recommend to come earlier or order. I'll definitely be back and highly recommend.

Did you know they import their pistachios from Turkey? But they get their walnuts in Nor Cal? My favorite one is their pistachio baklava. On 2 different occasions I had to get their walnut version because the pistachios wasn't available, something to do with being stuck at customs. I do appreciate them calling me a day before pick up to let me know though. Each time I bring their baklavas to gatherings, guests are hesitant to try it because they all believe it to be overly sweet which generally they are. But once I assured them they are not that sweet, they are hooked.

2,000 / 5 stars, absolutely amazing and delicious and fabulous. Yes it's a dramatic review but I'm utterly in love. The best baklava I've ever had- their pistachio. (Granted, I have yet to try their walnut ones). Whatever pistachio nut they are using, they're are so fragrant and floral. It's crispy and sweet but not overly so. I had 6 in one sitting... had three more pieces the next day. Immediately shared a few with some friends and everyone was sold. Great for day to day enjoyment. Would be an amazing gift or house warming. Picnics, birthdays, for work, etc. Overall, unquestionably wonderful.

I needed to bring something to a potluck and this place showed up in my search. With no clear sign on their storefront, this place would've never popped up in my radar otherwise, but I'm so glad it did. When I walked in, I was immediately offered a sample of their baklava. It was warm, perfectly sweet, and crisp. Unfortunately I was looking forward to getting one of their pistachio baklava trays but the worker informed me they were out of pistachio since they get it imported from Turkey. My classmates loved the walnut baklava regardless! Can't wait to come back and try the pistachio. (tip: pair the baklava with a charcuterie board, especially cheese for a salty contrast)

Do you have a delivery method to San Jose/Santa Clara?

Do you make baklava with just pistachio? I have an allergy to other tree nuts but not pistachio.

Hi Oren, currently we offer two flavors — Pistachio and Walnut. We’ll be expanding our selection in the near future.

Are they vegan?

Hey Rachel, we dont have any Vegan options yet. We use Ghee Butter and Eggs in our Baklava :( we will definitely have vegan options in the future.

Hello! I want to send some to my friend in a different state. How long is the shelf life? If shipping takes 2days or so, will it still be good? Also, if I don't finish, what is the best way to store them? Thanks alot!

Thank you for your message! The baklava won’t go “bad”. It will keep well up to at least a week but the pastry will get softer each day as pastry does. We recommend storing it at room temperature and if you would like to reheat it, here are the… Read more

The owner requested…read morethat lineups start after 7:45 - we got there at about 7:50 AM and there was already about half a block's worth of line. Once the bakery opened at 9 AM the line moved fairly fast, but by opening time the line was down two blocks and wrapped around out of sight. We'd heard about B&C lines but even this on a weekday morning was surprising. Overall the pastries were very good, I will say that the savory pastries rank higher here than anywhere else I've been, but the sweet pastries don't. We got the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Lemon Bluberry Bun, Potato Artichoke Croquiche, Bacon Egg & Cheese, and Sam's Blood Orange Olive Oil Cake. The Croquiche was my favorite of all of them, and it was great warm, with a nice creamy filling. From the sweet pastries, my favorite was the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin - the rhubarb taste wasn't very strong but it was overall flaky, not too dry (even when eating it later in the day), and the cinnamon coating also didn't clash with the strawberry, vanilla, and orange. Least favorite was the olive oil cake; it was slightly bitter and the olive oil taste was dominating. These pastries are very large. Split between 2 people 3 of them were enough for us to be so full we saved the rest for later. I also got the Brown Butter Butterscotch Latte (iced), I'm not usually a fan of coffee but it was really good (it's very sweet so as a non-coffee drinker that worked out for me - the syrups overpower the coffee taste). The inside is cute with a pastel pink theme, we were able to snag the two seats by the window. I also liked the merch for sale and got a small print of the storefront. Definitely worth going too once, but due to the line I probably won't return until a monthly menu comes out that has a lot of things I desperately want to try. It's a top 3 bakery in SF for sure.

What was unacceptable was the fact that they, after waiting in the line, took our order and then we had to wait longer for them to make it. Minutes into that second wait, they called us up to inform us that the items they collected our money for ran out. What would we like instead? All that seems rather odd. Why take my money if you don't have it? Furthermore, is the best form of compensation just simply "what would you like instead?" Not exactly customer service oriented and lack of customer love.

I could see the balloon that held all of the anticipated excitement my husband had of showing me a "new" spot (it was new to me) all but heartbreakingly deflate. Sigh. Not wanting that crestfallen look to prevail, I told him we'd try again. A hole in the wall that is takeout only, the customarily drab sunset weather doesn't do the vibe any favors out here. When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! I suggest you go for the gold, kerrygold Irish butter. Matcha. I love matcha so it's an automatic order but it's a definite winner. Not too sweet, because matcha isn't naturally sweet. Custard. Hubby's favorite. He's a vanilla head, so... Salted egg yolk. Hubby's other favorite. I like, he loves. Ube. WOW. Better than the matcha which is weird coming from me. The Ube filling BAKES INTO the interior & it is amazing! I wished I'd gotten 6 of these. The puffs. How friggin adorable. Just throw in 6 puffs. Or 18. Then dip them in the side of custard that comes with. If you get extra to take home (& you should), all you have to do is be sure to reheat them as per the directions on the box. Just place them on a baking sheet lined with foil, or an oven rack (I've done both, both work), at 325 for around 10 minutes. I think 12-15 minutes is actually ideal. I couldn't believe how soft they were after this. Like new! The next day, after being refrigerated all night! I know weird, but fact! A couple of days later I requested that we go again next Saturday. Like when you were a kid & you couldn't wait for Friday because Friday's were pizza night. That crestfallen look my husband had was replaced with delighted satisfaction. Glee even. We went again the following Saturday. 5 stars

Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.
