The borsch reminded me of indian rasam - perfect for when you might have a sore throat and just need some home comforts. The dumplings were also great and we dipped them in our soup for extra flavor. The server and hosts are friendly and have good recommendations!

May the Borscht Be with You Small Russian café and bakery located in SF's Inner Richmond neighborhood, and has actually been in operation here for nearly 75 years (ca. 1953), as the current owner took it over from the previous OG owners back in 1988. The Good: * Only a short walk from Golden Gate Park, which is how we arrived here. * Friendly service as you order at the counter and they bring it out to your table (if you're dining in) *Outdoor dog-friendly seating *Beers in bottle and small selection available on-tap *Borscht was a satisfying and tasty vegetarian version of this famous Russian soup. It really hit the spot on a cold SF winter day, and their slice of homemade bread that comes with it was a winner. *Blinchikis were both pretty good, but I definitely preferred the mushroom one over the beef, as the flavor was really good. The Meh: * Street parking only (if you can find it) * We weren't impressed with their famous Honey Cake (aka Medovik), as we found the cream layer just a little too cloying with its richness which overpowered the taste of the honey cake. *Interior is very cramped and fills to fast. Make sure you've kinda studied up beforehand on the menu, as its fairly large. Otherwise, you'll definitely feel rushed once you're in there. The Ugly: *Chicken Pelmini were pretty flavorless, and I wouldn't recommend paying extra for the broth because it didn't help. Conclusion: Not sure if I'd come again for lunch, but I'd definitely would like to check out more of their baked goods one day.

I was in the mood for soup so this was the closest place minus the Asian choices . It is a nice place I used to go here for their almond croissants but I have to refrain but they were delicious . So this time I went for their herring plate with potatoes. The potatoes were nice and hot and roasted with a side of herring plus a few caper big ones . The potatoes were great the plate looked fabulous I wasn't too impressed with the herring my dad used to marinate his own it was definitely better not much flavor . I also had their babuskas chicken soup it was fine but I didn't feel any love just a plain soup it did have a lot of chicken pieces and pasta it . All their soups including soups here are with a chicken base including the borscht which I have tried in the past I prefer a vegetable base for borscht so that explains that. The service was quick they do have a long line to order . They are very efficient they have to be with so many people . It's kinda of a cute little place with a full bakery attached with many options. They offer sandwiches, soups salads pelemeni and many pastries and Russian fare . I hope they don't move I will definitely miss

Went here after the Hot Chocolate run. I had the granola on Greek yogurt, matcha and I grabbed a croissant with Brie and a meat (I can't remember what protein!) You stand in line, get inside to order, get your coffee/matcha and find a seat. Then staff brings your food out to you. Great place to stop & catch up. I know we're weren't the only runners there. I probably should have ordered some Russian food to try too!

Its not as good anymore and I first came here three years ago.. which was so much better and had way more cream and flakey pastry. Which is a bummer because I really enjoyed coming here. The lines are now really long and theres no anywhere to sit anymore. I think its because we went later in the day but its never been so crowded before.

We went around 8:30AM on a Wednesday morning, it is definitely more crowded on weekends. Between two people we split an order of Blinchiki with Salmon Caviar and Syrniki. It is a bit pricey but good quality and fast service.

Picked up my daughter from the SF Ferry. We had dinner next door at Sushi Bistro, but my daughter wanted dessert. And when we walked by here and it reminded her of her favorite Russian bakery/cookies. So we decided to get a few items for dessert and breakfast tomorrow. Quality/Quantity - Got a bunch of cookies. Napoleon Cake - My choice, this will go perfect with my Peet's coffee tomorrow morning. Note to self, LISTEN to your daughter when she tells you it will NOT be good the next day as it will be soggy... Decent selection overall, especially for so late in the evening. We got here right before they closed at 7pm. Atmosphere - Most customers are buying to to-go. They do have outside seating, and there were some people there also. Open 7 days a week from 7am to 7pm. Is 7 your favorite or lucky #...? Plenty of free street parking. Delivery is also available. Service - Counter service today, for us. The lady was not friendly, but also not rude. She was just very direct. Tell her what you want and she will ring it up and get it for you. Price - $12; reasonable prices for high end bakery products. Owner Comment - Congrats on this bakery's success since 1953 and Mike Fishman, the new owner since 2008.

My daughter returned home from college and was hungry, so I offered boiling some frozen dumplings, but she said,"no." Next day, she wanted to go to Cinderella for pelmeni - Russian dumplings w/ beef filling! I had Siberian mushroom pie with clear noodles. We enjoyed our meal while each had one of their fresh juices, super refreshing for recent heatwaves. We couldn't relax and finish while outside, as a wasp (again!) kept saying hello, so much so that we had to pack and go!

Whether it's outdoor dining or takeout in such a small kiosk-like space, Cinderella Bakery & Café was the first Russian eatery since the 1950s. Borscht soup, beef stroganoff, and hand size piroshkis are what I'm most familiar with when it comes to Russian eats. Here in the heart of inner Richmond, a couple of ladies sure made my day in their women owned business. I might try out a nice bowl of borscht soup and any Siberian meat pies on a future visit. During my first visit, I bought two different kinds of piroshkis, one shredded cabbage (white sesame on top) and the ground beef cheddar cheese combo (cheese print on top). My brother hardly liked his piroshki since there's not enough ground beef mixed with the cheddar cheese. As for my shredded cabbage piroshki, hopefully the speck of white stuff was milky cheese, not egg. I couldn't have mine heated before I headed back home. Cinderella Bakery & Café was more than just a local small business; it's another good chance to broaden one's horizons since Russian food still need more attention. For anyone who haven't been to the Richmond district for so long, Cinderella Bakery looks family friendly to palate pleasers.

Great place for Russian food in the neighbourhood. Great selection of food and pastries, could definitely eat there or do the take away, great in any option. Very friendly stuff, food is delicious! I love to come and get "Borsh" there and pelmeni too. The soup comes with a few pieces of a bread and is very filling and delicious. One of the best Borshes I tried in Russian cafes. Veal pelmeni are great! Can't go wrong with those. A part from it pirozhok with mushrooms is top of the top. By than also, every item here is delicious and deeply loved I really enjoy them all! Thank you for delicious food!

Such little cute spot. Loved their food. We had borsch and kharcho soup and two piroshkis. Chef's kiss. Soo good. Outside seating was cute. Definitely recommend if you love Russian food. Also their coffees and pastries were amazing too!

This bakery has lots of food options and drink options to choose from. I've only gone once and only ordered a savory item, but I'm looking forward to trying other items from this bakery. The staff was very friendly at the counter and in the bakery area, which you have to walk through to use the restroom.

Ask the Community - Cinderella Bakery & Cafe

How is the parking for this cafe?

Street parking! Can definitely find a space, but probably also depends on day/time

Are the Pirogi with mushroom and clear noodles vegan? Are the Potato Vareniki without sour cream vegan?

What's the birds milk cake? Are there any nuts in it?

Are any of the sandwiches dairy free?

Vegan sandwich! You can probably order any of the sandwiches without cheese.

What items are gluten-free on the menu?

The borscht and the cabbage rolls will likely be gluten free.

You have a delivery fee. Do I still have to tip the person who delivered to my house ? If I have to, how much?

I think you should tip but I imagine it would have to be no more than for any other delivery - like for GrubHub etc.

    Do they sell cheese babka?

Nope. They do have good Hamantaschen though.

What is the dough for the pies, pierogi, pelmenis, varenikis and piroshkis made of? Is it all-purpose flour or whole wheat or another?

Are their potato piroshki vegan (no dairy and eggs in the dough)?

I don't know exactly how they make their dough, but I bet there's eggs or butter within the layers and crispy croissant like layers of the dough on their piroshkis.

Do the blinchiki contain any sesame seeds or sesame oil?

blinchiki do not contain any sesame seeds or sesame oil. Sesame oil is not a typical ingridient in russian cuisine, nor is the seeds.

Once the bakery opened at 9 AM the line moved fairly fast, but by opening time the line was down two blocks and wrapped around out of sight. We'd heard about B&C lines but even this on a weekday morning was surprising. Overall the pastries were very good, I will say that the savory pastries rank higher here than anywhere else I've been, but the sweet pastries don't. We got the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin, Lemon Bluberry Bun, Potato Artichoke Croquiche, Bacon Egg & Cheese, and Sam's Blood Orange Olive Oil Cake. The Croquiche was my favorite of all of them, and it was great warm, with a nice creamy filling. From the sweet pastries, my favorite was the Strawberry Rhubarb Cruffin - the rhubarb taste wasn't very strong but it was overall flaky, not too dry (even when eating it later in the day), and the cinnamon coating also didn't clash with the strawberry, vanilla, and orange. Least favorite was the olive oil cake; it was slightly bitter and the olive oil taste was dominating. These pastries are very large. Split between 2 people 3 of them were enough for us to be so full we saved the rest for later. I also got the Brown Butter Butterscotch Latte (iced), I'm not usually a fan of coffee but it was really good (it's very sweet so as a non-coffee drinker that worked out for me - the syrups overpower the coffee taste). The inside is cute with a pastel pink theme, we were able to snag the two seats by the window. I also liked the merch for sale and got a small print of the storefront. Definitely worth going too once, but due to the line I probably won't return until a monthly menu comes out that has a lot of things I desperately want to try. It's a top 3 bakery in SF for sure.

Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.
