For my moms 50th I ordered a cannoli cake..... This cannoli cake was awful. It was very dry, the cannoli cream had absolutely NO flavor so bland. The cake itself was very just hard to consume. I walked into the store and ordered one for my wife's birthday. The young woman who waited on me was friendly, courteous, helpful and informative. It could not have been a more pleasant experience. When I came in to pick up the cake, it was ready and I was given hints on how to make the cake last and what to do with the cake before it was served. For a place with a small, cozy vibe you'd think the people managing it would offer a smile and be a little nicer to their customers, especially considering the prices are high. Customer service is important to me, as I am sure it is to most Yelp reviewers, and since theirs is severely lacking, I won't be returning to Just Desserts. Bavarian cake. Need I say more?! Their hours are not wonderful, parking can sometimes be a little bit of a pain (never horrible though), and everything is more expensive than you'll find at most places. I DON'T CARE! Give me the Bavarian cake any day. Take a quick look at the menu and if you don't find yourself salivating, go to the doctor. This is my go-to place every chance I get. The cupcakes I've tried have been wonderful as well - particularly the red velvet (DIVINE) and all of the icings (not too sweet). They have chocolates and other goodies in the store (not on the website), so be sure to check them out! Call ahead to find out their hours and to place an order. The place is tiny and they don't have a huge amount of stock. They'll decorate whatever you want as well. UPDATE: I can't recommend the cannoli cake... it was a 3 star cake. What a delight it was to find Just Desserts in Hawthorne. After a recommendation by a friend, I decided to try Just Desserts for my birthday cake. The bake shop is petite and is set back from the road just a bit and is attached to a house. I was trilled to see that it was a small place that was completely different from any other North Jersey Bakery. The atmosphere is charming and unique with a full view of the baking area and a small assortment of cakes, cupcakes, cheese cakes and tarts on hand. Although they make a decent variety of baked goods they recommend that if you want something special you order it early the day before your event. When I arrived on a Wednesday afternoon I had about 5 different cakes to chose from and went with the young woman's recommendation of the Chocolate Silk cake ( a rich dark chocolate cake with a creamy imported chocolate filling and frosting).The cake was perfect! Moist and light with a ton of flavor! You couldn't ask for a better chocolate cake! I also asked her to recommend six different cupcakes just to try for fun. The cupcakes were just as great and some even had fillings! Everything is wonderful and fresh. If you take your time eating your treats you can taste all the flavors which really makes it taste like homemade. This is coming from a girl who has been baking and decorating cakes from scratch for the past 14 years as a hobby. I had two specialty birthday cakes made here and this place did not disappoint. The prices were reasonable and the chocolate cake was AMAZING. I got the "hostess" cake which mimics a hostess chocolate cake with marshmallow filling. To. Die. For. I paid $100 for enough cake to feed approximately 65 people. I would definitely order cakes from here again. I've gone back to get cupcakes and while they are equally delicious, the prices are a little ridiculous for these - I can't remember if they were $3 or $3.50 per cupcake but I've paid less at rip off places like Magnolia in NYC. I just picked up a two layered baby shower cake from Just Desserts today. It was out of this world. The design came out exactly how I wanted. The flavors of the two different cakes were great! We got chocolate with a raspberry filling and vanilla with chocolate filling, they were both excellent. Frosting tasted very natural and good, not like other bakeries with their buttercream frosting (too fake and way too sugary). Overall everyone loved it and we were extremely satisfied!! This place is amazing! Hands down the best cake I've ever tasted, and I work in the city and have had plenty of Manhattan's "top rated" cakes. Baking Grace is my new go to place for all cake needs. The people are WONDERFUL over the phone when you call and make the order. As a mom who wants her son's special day to be perfect, I had a lot of questions. I kept the girl on the phone for at least 10 minutes asking everything from the texture to the sweetness etc...she was so patient and gave me great advice and answered all my questions in great detail. My husband picked up the cake up, and without mentioning my great experience I had with BG over the phone, he came home describing how unique the shop is and how friendly the girls are. He even said the girl gave great advice on how to make the cake last as long as possible. We are the type of consumers who really appreciate the small things like that. We ended up choosing the Bavarian cake. I was worried it may be too sweet for my very picky 13 year old son, but it was JUST PERFECT for him and all his friends.
