Palermo's now has made a cake not only for my wedding, but my 30th birthday cake, as well. We got married at Fiesta banquets in Wood-Ridge which partners with Palermo's. For our cake tasting, Palermo's gave out a box to take home of all of their flavors. I think this idea came out of Covid, but I was happy to be able to choose the flavors out of the comfort of my home & not feel pressured in the bakery. When we arrived at the bakery, they had a form we wrote our name on to ensure we received our tasting box and we didn't have to wait too long. The bakery was beautiful and smelled amazing! They had seating inside & outside as well. The tasting box came with a pamphlet with all the flavors and descriptions. This includes their normal flavors and premium which you would pay more for. We tried all 16 & we enjoyed the carrot cake & were BLOWNNN away by the blueberry cheesecake. My husband and I unanimously chose that flavor. We did pay extra, as it was a premium flavor but it was worth everything we paid because we reminisce on how good it was to this day! For my birthday, I choose Felina in Ridgewood & they partner with Palermo's as well. I choose strawberry and vanilla custard filling with whipped cream icing. It was the perfect amount of sweetness. It was very difficult to communicate with them both via email and via telephone for a wedding cake. They were one of the three recommended bakeries for our wedding venue in NJ and this place was eliminated due to not picking up their phones and not responding to emails. We ended up with a local bakery competitor that starts with "C". How hard is it to pick up your phone or to respond to emails to schedule cake tasting and ordering? Came to try this bakery with a Groupon. While they're probably known for their cakes and sweets, they also have food too! Pizza's, sandwiches, and quesadillas too. We ordered take out- a chicken quesadilla, mozzarella sticks, a Stromboli, and the strawberry shortcake in a cup and the mixed berry torte. The chicken quesadilla is pretty standard, flour tortilla with chicken and cheese, no other vegetables inside. But at least they give you salsa, sour cream, and guacamole. The mozzarella sticks were ok, I ate them fresh in the car, but thought it was too much breading and not enough mozzarella. The Stromboli was pretty good though, lots of ham and pepperoni inside and the breading was very well done. As for the desserts, the strawberry shortcake was probably the highlight. Perfectly sweet but not too sweet and full of strawberries. The mixed berry torte was not too tart and not too sweet as well and was ok. Overall, pretty good for the groupon that we got. I have gotten 5 custom cakes from Palermo's. The first one was my wedding cake, which was included with my wedding venue, but we went in and customized it with flavors, design, etc. My mother then ordered me a baby shower cake, which was a Once Upon a Time Book. I then ordered my daughter a custom christening cake, and my husband a cake that looked like a Bud Light 24 pack. Most recently I ordered my daughter a Elmo cake for her first birthday. All of the cakes tasted beyond delicious and were completely customized. We sat down had an appointment, and I received exactly what I ordered. Palermo's makes wonderful cakes, everyone know this by their reputation. They can, however, be pricey. I also LOVE the fact that they offer delivery. Since all of my major events are done for awhile I don't know when the next time I will be using them will be. The bakery attached to the cake shop is also wonderful, and when you order a cake you will receive 10% off your bakery order, and free coffee. My daughter is also a fan of their cupcakes. They had us look through a bunch of sample pictures to put together our perfect cake. The tasting was fun, they have a lot of different filling options for the cakes. We went with a chocolate cake with a fudge filling. The buttercream frosting was put on with a really cool design pattern making our cake have the rustic look we wanted. They had some very cool fondant cakes on display, they can pretty much do whatever you want for a cake design The only downside we found was with their gluten free cake. We were getting one large regular cake for the guests and myself and a small gluten free cake for my wife and a few other guests. We were not impressed with their gluten free flavor and the cake was dry. We ended up getting that cake from another shop. If we didn't happen to need the gluten free cake I would have nothing negative to say. read more

However, the reason for my 4 star review is that they did generate the product we wanted and it tasted much better the wedding day than on the tasting (thankfully). I am not sure I would order again if I had a different party due to the customer service issues, and we have used Calandra's for other events. We have been customers of palermo's bakery for years. This review is based on the cake side of the bakery, not the actual bakery. Palermo's cakes always come out delicious and beautiful. Their bakers truly have an art for bringing to life customer's ideas. Two of the consultants that come to mind are Nicole and Olga. Great service. Olga is a perfectionist and it is seen in how detailed her cake designs are. Nicole just designed my last cake and it came out just how she drew it. The only reason I do not give Palermo's a 5 star is because for one party there were a few issues and the cake showed up without a box and I thought that was a big unhygienic. (In their defense I ordered from the UC branch. ) Price wise they tend to be a bit expensive but most bakers (at home or at a bakery) charge about the same. At least when I order from Palermo's I know I'm getting the real deal. I will continue to recommend and use Palermo's bakeries. read more

I gave Palermo's 3 stars because they have really good pastries. I went there with my fiancé for our cake testing and got crappy customer service. I walked in the door and everyone just stared. Someone was helping a family already and didn't even look up to greet us. Other girls who worked there looked up and went back to doing their business. The place is extremely small with papers scattered everywhere. The woman who helped us didn't even smile or provide any insight when we were confused about how they worked. The cakes were delicious but was extremely turned off by the customer service. I wasn't asked to show any pictures, barely got any second opinion, was talked down to like we were idiots, and I had to ask EVERYTHING in order to get answers. I wouldn't have mind if she told me what she thought would look best, if she asked me what colors my wedding colors were, what my dress looked like, to provide me with any additional ideas. At that point, I didn't even want to show her pictures of what I had because it didn't seem like she wanted to help us at all. We had such a beautiful cake that worked well with our florist's added floral touches. Pauly was our cake consultant. He was so professional and nice, letting us take our time picking out the right cake in the computer files and helping us narrow it down. During the cake tasting, we must have tried over a dozen flavors (white vs. chocolate cake with different fillers such as Dulce de Leche, orange, strawberry, etc), all of which were so fresh and delicious. Pauly was kind enough to bring us fresh coffee from the "everyday" Palermo bakery that is next to the "wedding" office that had tons of magnificent, preserved cakes. To my knowledge, I bought a cake that could feed up to ten people when in reality I felt like this thing could feed an army! I was shocked and happy when I saw that I did not get a really tiny cake. The only downside was that the box it came in messed up a little bit of the top corner of the cake. PALERMO'S OH HOW I LOVE YOU!!!! They did such a great job on my daughter's cake. Her birthday is in the Summer and their cake held up so well in the heat and humidity. Mind you, it was buttercream and not even fondant! The cake was fresh, moist and delicious. Everybody in the party loved it. They also did my girlfriend's wedding cake and it was literally a flawless work of art. The work was clean and the cake was delicious again. They are a little pricey but given the quality, I don't mind paying a little more. I hear their cannolis are outstanding but I haven't personally tried them. I've been going to Palermo's for special occasions. Not only are their cakes delicious but they work with last minute request within reasonable means. I placed an order literally a day before my bday celebration. Not only did they accommodate the request but nailed the design. I had a mini 2-tier whimsical cake with polka dots and bottom layer with diamond shape layout. As well as 30 on top in fuchsia. And they add mini daisies and pipping to the 2-tier cake. It was a vanilla cake with pineapple filling and coconut mousse with butter cream. It was so good. I had also placed prior cake orders in the past- luau girl in Hawaii island, and a whimsical design inspired by Alice in Wonderland. Both in the same cake flavor/filling but beautifully done. Olga and Paulie are wonderful to work with in addition to the rest of the staff. My daughter will be turning 1 soon in a few months. I am a Super-fan of Palermo's. Italian family-owned. They made my baby shower cake, my son's 2nd and 3rd birthday cakes, they will be making my daughter's next year, and so on. Where do I begin...we went in for a cake tasting, it was probably one of the most difficult decisions because all the cakes were so good. But once I tasted their Raspberry preserve filling, I was hooked. Their cakes are absolutely the best; inside is moist and delish. The creamy whipped buttercream icing is super sweet, you are getting two cavities from the icing alone [sucks, but its so dang worth it...ok not really...but it's still good]. Pricing is determined by size of cake, filling, and any other artistry involved. All in all they are fair market value. I spent about $30 on a 8" (fed 10-15pp); 30-35 was about $180 or so. DISCLAIMER: This review is based off the perspective of one who ordered a wedding cake AND the cake was part of the wedding venue (The Grove) package. Alright! So we made an appointment with the bakery to pick out the cake just a month before the wedding and we were impressed by the selection and the design options. The taste testing and free beverage during the appointment was tasty and fun! Olga was nice and patient with us and I thank her for that! We ended up choosing a 4-tier vanilla cake with layers of fresh strawberries and cannoli cream, for the 1st 3 tiers. The top tier (meant to be for the newly weds) is a chocolate cake with Nutella-like spread. I can't wait to have it!! And the best part? No fondant!! That stuff is like chewing rubber and I can't stand the stuff. Once we saw the cake at the wedding, it was gorgeous! Exactly what we wanted and it tasted delicious! We first sat down with Palermo's on March 30, 2018 and Ines Martinez was very professional and explained the production and provided me, my husband and my maids of honor with an array of cakes to taste. The cakes tasted amazing. I chose the Dulce de Leche Mousse and Cannoli Cream and the icing was Buttercream vanilla. A week prior to our wedding I myself reached out to Palermo's and they informed me that my order was good to go, and it would arrive at the venue safely. I saw the cake the day of the wedding and was astonished how it looked exactly how I envisioned and requested. It was beautiful and not to mention it tasted PHENOMENAL! I am so glad I had read these reviews prior to ordering a custom cake. I see the baked goods quality is as poor as their customer service. My review is based on customer service. I have never asked for quotes on cakes and met with such a dismissive answer. Other more professional bakeries will work with you and discuss what they can and cannot do. Palermo's, however, gives you a one sentence answer. I asked for a very specific cake in an email requesting a quote. Their answer: "Unfortunately, we do not make almond cake. " Nothing more. No quote, discussion of alternatives, or list of flavors they do bale When I questioned why they would give such a response they said, "It is just letting you know that almond cake is not what we offer, as that seems most important to your order.. We can certainly create other flavors. " Why would anyone assume what is important to a customer instead of simply asking? The tasting appointment was not only delicious (plus they allowed us to take home the leftovers), but the staff listened to my requests and created the exact cake I was envisioning.
