Do not underestimate the power of the local pie store in the Temescal neighborhood! If you're looking for a local business that makes the best pies, whether it be apple, blueberry, or more -- look no further than Bakesale Bettty! They are located right off of Telegraph and 51st Street, right across from the Children's Hospital of Oakland. Though they do most of their sales outside (rain or shine), they know just how to impress the right people -- and one of those people would have to include me because their pies really took me to a different level of pie appreciation. We went on a Friday morning (keep in mind they are closed Monday through Wednesday, so plan accordingly when you want to go buy these pies), and while the lines were a bit long, the line wasn't too bad, and they went rather quick. Me and my friend got the banana cream pie, and the key lime pie. I love how tart the pies were -- the banana cream was so layered, made with actual banana and it was topped with another layer of cream and chocolate covering. All in all, $7 a slice for a piece of pie is not bad at all, especially if they were made by food artisans who knew their craft. Ambiance is rather good, and not underwhelming at all. Such a gem! I've been going here for almost 3 years and I will never get tired of the items here! Staff is always so friendly and helpful especially when I come and ask about the pot pie lol! Tip on that is to just place an order for the following week. After living in the East Bay for 8 years, I finally had the chance to experience the legendary Bakesale Betty. I've driven by countless times trying to quickly read their handwritten menus while I drive past. This time, even after we had bagels down the road, we decided to stop and grab a Fried Chicken Sandwich ($14) and a Cinnamon Roll ($4.50). The two lovely humans working the register outside were so enthusiastic & patient as I took my time reading through each item. I was *almost* convinced to also get some Bread Pudding, but I have to make sure I have other things to try in the future! I was initially only going to get the sandwich, but the cinnamon rolls were displayed so conveniently in the window and they were calling my name. Everything was already prepped, so we had our food in less than five minutes! The Fried Chicken Sandwich was almost bursting out of the container and I believe was being held closed by a rubber band because of how packed it was! (This is ALWAYS a good sign.) Not only was the fried chicken perfectly golden brown & seasoned inside and out, the slaw was delightful. Acidic, refreshing, and provided some balance to the sandwich. I really think people don't emphasize how important it is to season your batter for fried chicken, but Bakesale Betty knows EXACTLY what's up. The bun itself was nothing too exciting, if anything, I wish the bun was warm. The Cinnamon Roll was very yummy. Covered in a huge scoop of frosting, the dough was not too dense, fluffy, and the cinnamon sugar wasn't too sweet! I'd absolutely buy a dozen to take to my friends or coworkers. If you do visit, make sure you plan where you'll enjoy your food. They do not have seating. The team here was nice, welcoming and efficient- helping customers quickly get their items. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich ($14.60) and they were nice enough to slice it in half for me since I knew I wouldn't be able to finish it all. It's a simple sandwich, quality bun, flavorful and fresh slaw, and a crispy piece of chicken. They also packed some hot sauce in the box with the sandwich. The slaw made the sandwich for me. It was crunchy, flavorful and bright and added some texture to the dense piece of chicken. I enjoyed the fried coating on the chicken and it's best eaten fresh for the full flavor experience. The slaw wasn't the typical mayo slaw, it was this vinaigrette slaw which i prefer over mayo slaw. The sandwich was huge. I couldn't figure out how to start eating because it was huge. For $15 I thought it was a solid fried chicken sandwich. Simple, nothing fancy but delicious. The chicken was juicy and the fried batter was thin and light. Street parking only. Could be hard to find. No seating but we walked down the street and found some seats at a parklet for another restaurant to eat since they weren't open yet. Hubs and I had a coveted lunch without the kids last weekend and we were scratching our heads for where we could go with limited time in the area when we saw people waiting in line for Bakesale Betty. Tired of turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving, we found primo parking right in front and hopped in line. The nice ladies took our order and when asked for dessert recs, the lady with cool glasses said sweet potato was her favorite so that's what we ordered. I got the chicken salad and hubs got the chicken sandwich. I personally LOVE the salad because I feel like you get more chicken and I love the jalapeño slaw which is so spicy and fresh. The chicken is crispy. I overheard the customer in front of us order nuggets so I guess that must be an off menu secret item I have to try to order next time. I think the way they cut the chicken for the salad in strips is great though. You can see from my picture how fresh and juicy the chicken is. They give you packets of Frank's red hot sauce and it goes perfectly with the chicken and jalapeño slaw. There are no tables or chairs and it's takeout only FYI so we sat in the back of my minivan trunk picnic style. The sweet potato pie was SO delicious. It's been almost a week now and I can still remember how it tasted, it was THAT good. The house made whipped cream on the side was also delicious and went perfectly with the pie. I can only imagine if we had managed to get the slice of pie home and heated it up how it would have been EVEN more heavenly to eat warm. Ok I kinda get it. I walked up to the no-frills table on a Sunday, ordered a sandwich and a cookie and was brought a bag with my order before I could finish paying. Sandwich was huge. Lots of slaw on top. Bit of spice to the chicken. Chicken was a bit dry towards the end. The slaw is doing much of the heavy-lifting IMO. This is a perfect sandwich to grab in the area when you're about to spend the rest of the day drinking in the sun at the lake or something. The wife goes by the name "Bakesale Betty", and wears a purple or sometimes blue wig. They are so friendly, and quick to serve every customer. There are two staple dishes that Bakesale Betty is most known for: the chicken sandwich and the strawberry shortcake. But, it seems with every passing year, the quality of this dessert just seems to decline. The whipped cream was a nominal amount (no more than a tablespoon), and the shortcake itself was dense and lacked flavor. Though I didn't order the chicken sandwich, the previous times I've ordered it were all lackluster experiences. A bland chicken patty with almost dressing-less slaw atop a decent brioche-esque bun is more of a quasi fried chicken sandwich especially when contending with the likes of Hotboys or even, dare I say, Popeyes. Of course what has brought Bakesale Betty to the heart of every lover of good food is the fact that they make one of the best fried chicken sandwiches in the region, as it all comes down to the preparation, which was inspired by a fried chicken recipe that Barakat learned as a line cook at the iconic Chez Panisse, as their ethereally crispy chicken patties are marinated, hand-dredged and fried, then served on an Acme bakery roll and topped with crunchy housemade slaw. A warm weekend morning is what brought me to Bakesale Betty on a recent visit to Temscal, and thankfully there were no major lines queuing outside that I have seen when driving by in the past. After finding parking on a street nearby, I approached Bakesale Betty's location, their pitch black awning and storefront you cannot miss, but what makes this trip most interesting is that currently Bakesale Betty is taking all orders outdoors. Everything is being made indoors but outside along makeshift counters is where you order and pay for your meal to take with you. Everything seems so temporary as even their menus are all written in black marker on poster boards taped to their windows. None of this was going to deter me from ordering the menu item that I came for: Bakesale Betty's Fried Chicken Sandwich, which costs $13.60 before tax. Although I also came for their signature strawberry shortcake, I suppose it was seasonal as for the dessert that they had for sale was Bett's Bread Pudding with Bananas. For $7.03 before tax this dessert was served warm in a plastic container and with caramel, and a side of whipped cream and walnuts. Although they also sell pies by the whole pie or pie slice and Betty's signature cinnamon rolls, it was their cookies that caught my eye, as they have no fewer than six different types of cookies for sale at a cost of $2.75 each. After ordering a ginger molasses cookie to go with my chicken sandwich and banana bread pudding, my total bill would be $25.49 before gratuity was added in. It wouldn't take too long for my order to be brought in a brown paper bag, as they have a pretty efficient system on creating their sandwiches inside and presenting them to customers in a reasonable amount of time. Of course, I would return home to unbox my treats for the day and overall it was a lot of food. From the warm savory sandwich to the massive cookie to the abundant dessert that was filled with so much caramel that I wanted to dive right into it right then and there. But I decided to take my time and enjoy each bite on its own and I am happy to report that their signature dish tastes as good as ever, juicy, warm and bursting with flavor, this was as good as advertised. The real surprise were my sweets as their banana pudding was better than expected and didn't have me missing that strawberry shortcake dessert at all, and that cookie was as delicious and chewy as any specialty cookie shop would produce. After enjoying my meal at Bakesale Betty, it just proves that good things come in small packages, in this case small menus, as all they have is a sandwich or salad made with their signature main dish. I had been wanting to try Bakesale Betty for quite a few years but it always had long lines and I was not usually able to come by during their open hours. I decided to go on Friday afternoon close to when they close at 2pm, and called their phone number ahead of time to see if I could order ahead and/or confirm they weren't sold out, but just got the beeping that indicates an invalid phone number, so I'd recommend they take their phone number off their website and any other online presence if they're not actually able to answer the phone. Fortunately, there were only a few people ahead of me in line when I arrived and I was able to order a fried tofu coleslaw sandwich (it wasn't listed on the big poster paper sheets where the menu was written, so I had to ask for it). It didn't take long for them to get to me in line or to prepare my order, which I believe is because they had two people working registers and several others behind them who were assembling the orders. Regarding the sandwich itself, beware of the jalapeno pieces in the coleslaw if you're weak to spicy like me. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw but I've never particularly liked coleslaw, so I do wish they had other sandwich options or ways to modify it to replace coleslaw with something else. However, I appreciate that they didn't skimp on the tofu, it was very thick, and was breaded on the exterior, so I think it was a decent approximation of the fried chicken they're famous for.
