This is a gem. The only place I will queue up for. Do not let the long line discourage you. Chicken sandwich no slaw is my go to order and Betty (in the blue wig) knows how to fry chicken. Don't sleep on the strawberry short cake, on a biscuit rather than angel food cake, fresh whipped cream and the best strawberries. All the cookies are good too. It's a walk up in 2026 and they used to have ironing board tables with chairs outside but no longer, it just to go. Very efficient and great service. Near to Whole Foods and Asmara too. The OG "upscale fried chicken" sandwich in Oakland. It changed the game in the 2010s but the rest of the world caught up fast. The sandwich has three elements: bun, chicken (or tofu), and coleslaw. The strongest is the chicken: afried breast with thick batter that makes a satisfying crunch and contains enough black pepper to bring some warmth. The coleslaw is heaped on and becomes its own substantial event. It could be part of the greatness but for two drawbacks. First, there is a lot of oil in the coleslaw. Maybe it could work for a grilled chicken sandwich, but a fried one already brings the oil. Second, shrinkflation came for the bun. Holding the thing together is a challenge. However much, the plain bread used to soak up the slaw oil, there is just not enough bun to do it now. But here's the catch: there are at least two great upscale fried chicken sandwiches just down the road. BSB is a good take on what the chicken sandwich can be, but I wouldn't make it a regular spot. read more

No need to order both items unless you really want extra carbs. The coleslaw salad by itself was not bad though. Just didn't pair well in the sandwich. Chicken was meh, again. Strawberry Shortcake ($8.00): Basically a deconstructed shortcake, if you like that kind of stuff. A biscuit in one corner, cream in another, then topped with strawberries. Cinnamon roll was okay but small (about four bites), needed more bake time and more cream cheese frosting. Do not underestimate the power of the local pie store in the Temescal neighborhood! If you're looking for a local business that makes the best pies, whether it be apple, blueberry, or more -- look no further than Bakesale Bettty! They are located right off of Telegraph and 51st Street, right across from the Children's Hospital of Oakland. Though they do most of their sales outside (rain or shine), they know just how to impress the right people -- and one of those people would have to include me because their pies really took me to a different level of pie appreciation. We went on a Friday morning (keep in mind they are closed Monday through Wednesday, so plan accordingly when you want to go buy these pies), and while the lines were a bit long, the line wasn't too bad, and they went rather quick. Me and my friend got the banana cream pie, and the key lime pie. I love how tart the pies were -- the banana cream was so layered, made with actual banana and it was topped with another layer of cream and chocolate covering. All in all, $7 a slice for a piece of pie is not bad at all, especially if they were made by food artisans who knew their craft. Ambiance is rather good, and not underwhelming at all. Such a gem! I've been going here for almost 3 years and I will never get tired of the items here! Staff is always so friendly and helpful especially when I come and ask about the pot pie lol! Tip on that is to just place an order for the following week. After living in the East Bay for 8 years, I finally had the chance to experience the legendary Bakesale Betty. I've driven by countless times trying to quickly read their handwritten menus while I drive past. This time, even after we had bagels down the road, we decided to stop and grab a Fried Chicken Sandwich ($14) and a Cinnamon Roll ($4.50). The two lovely humans working the register outside were so enthusiastic & patient as I took my time reading through each item. I was *almost* convinced to also get some Bread Pudding, but I have to make sure I have other things to try in the future! I was initially only going to get the sandwich, but the cinnamon rolls were displayed so conveniently in the window and they were calling my name. Everything was already prepped, so we had our food in less than five minutes! The Fried Chicken Sandwich was almost bursting out of the container and I believe was being held closed by a rubber band because of how packed it was! (This is ALWAYS a good sign.) Not only was the fried chicken perfectly golden brown & seasoned inside and out, the slaw was delightful. Acidic, refreshing, and provided some balance to the sandwich. I really think people don't emphasize how important it is to season your batter for fried chicken, but Bakesale Betty knows EXACTLY what's up. The bun itself was nothing too exciting, if anything, I wish the bun was warm. The Cinnamon Roll was very yummy. Covered in a huge scoop of frosting, the dough was not too dense, fluffy, and the cinnamon sugar wasn't too sweet! I'd absolutely buy a dozen to take to my friends or coworkers. If you do visit, make sure you plan where you'll enjoy your food. They do not have seating. Gotta love the local favorite Bakesale Betty. Hubs and I had a coveted lunch without the kids last weekend and we were scratching our heads for where we could go with limited time in the area when we saw people waiting in line for Bakesale Betty. Tired of turkey leftovers after Thanksgiving, we found primo parking right in front and hopped in line. The nice ladies took our order and when asked for dessert recs, the lady with cool glasses said sweet potato was her favorite so that's what we ordered. I got the chicken salad and hubs got the chicken sandwich. I personally LOVE the salad because I feel like you get more chicken and I love the jalapeño slaw which is so spicy and fresh. The chicken is crispy. I overheard the customer in front of us order nuggets so I guess that must be an off menu secret item I have to try to order next time. I think the way they cut the chicken for the salad in strips is great though. You can see from my picture how fresh and juicy the chicken is. They give you packets of Frank's red hot sauce and it goes perfectly with the chicken and jalapeño slaw. There are no tables or chairs and it's takeout only FYI so we sat in the back of my minivan trunk picnic style. The sweet potato pie was SO delicious. It's been almost a week now and I can still remember how it tasted, it was THAT good. The house made whipped cream on the side was also delicious and went perfectly with the pie. I can only imagine if we had managed to get the slice of pie home and heated it up how it would have been EVEN more heavenly to eat warm. The cookies are hit or miss -- not horrible but not my favorite. We came a while back and got smth we didn't like but I can't remember what it was lol. That said I have been craving cinnamon rolls and they had em so I got a roll and a slice of apple pie. The cinnamon is decent -- fluffy and just sweet enough without being overdone. The wife goes by the name "Bakesale Betty", and wears a purple or sometimes blue wig. They are so friendly, and quick to serve every customer. Ok I kinda get it. I walked up to the no-frills table on a Sunday, ordered a sandwich and a cookie and was brought a bag with my order before I could finish paying. Sandwich was huge. Lots of slaw on top. Bit of spice to the chicken. Chicken was a bit dry towards the end. The slaw is doing much of the heavy-lifting IMO. This is a perfect sandwich to grab in the area when you're about to spend the rest of the day drinking in the sun at the lake or something. This might spark contention among Bay Area folks, but my hot take is that Bakesale Betty is very overrated. There are two staple dishes that Bakesale Betty is most known for: the chicken sandwich and the strawberry shortcake. But, while many shout from the rooftops (ahem SF Eater) that these two are irresistibly good, spoiler alert, they're really not. I remember the shortcake being heavenly a few years back. But, it seems with every passing year, the quality of this dessert just seems to decline. I ordered it today, despite the annual disappointment I faced every previous year when this seasonal dessert became available, and the strawberries again were cloyingly sweet - simply drowning in sugary syrup. The whipped cream was a nominal amount (no more than a tablespoon), and the shortcake itself was dense and lacked flavor. Though I didn't order the chicken sandwich, the previous times I've ordered it were all lackluster experiences. A bland chicken patty with almost dressing-less slaw atop a decent brioche-esque bun is more of a quasi fried chicken sandwich especially when contending with the likes of Hotboys or even, dare I say, Popeyes. Let me start by saying that if you havent been here yet, definitely try it out for yourself. The people are friendly and they are definitely popular around lunch. Based on the reviews, I must say that I probably just had an unlucky experience. The chicken sandwich was cold and super soggy, most of the batter slipped right off. I had been wanting to try Bakesale Betty for quite a few years but it always had long lines and I was not usually able to come by during their open hours. I decided to go on Friday afternoon close to when they close at 2pm, and called their phone number ahead of time to see if I could order ahead and/or confirm they weren't sold out, but just got the beeping that indicates an invalid phone number, so I'd recommend they take their phone number off their website and any other online presence if they're not actually able to answer the phone. Fortunately, there were only a few people ahead of me in line when I arrived and I was able to order a fried tofu coleslaw sandwich (it wasn't listed on the big poster paper sheets where the menu was written, so I had to ask for it). It didn't take long for them to get to me in line or to prepare my order, which I believe is because they had two people working registers and several others behind them who were assembling the orders. Regarding the sandwich itself, beware of the jalapeno pieces in the coleslaw if you're weak to spicy like me. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw but I've never particularly liked coleslaw, so I do wish they had other sandwich options or ways to modify it to replace coleslaw with something else. However, I appreciate that they didn't skimp on the tofu, it was very thick, and was breaded on the exterior, so I think it was a decent approximation of the fried chicken they're famous for.
