Tres Leches Cake
Rahn C.

Great place to pick up a quick bday cake. Staff is very friendly and will write on the cake for free. (Btw beautiful cake writing) I paid $30 for a round Tres Leches cake; great flavors- very sweet and moist. FYI- store is inside a building with multiple store. Will help if you speak Spanish but staff does speak English.

Best Tres Leches. Ive been a TL fan for two decades before TL was a thing and have since tried many. This is legit. And great customer service. Go. And enjoy.

After downing a belly full of menudo with chopped tripe at Obelisco across the street, one would think I would have no room for dessert. But I can't help myself when I'm in this part of Oakland where Mexican sweets could be purchased for mere shekels. I went into the little mall behind the churro wagon and knew I had to decide between a mangonada at Nieves Cinco de Mayo or something from the bins at this bakery. Since I've had the mangonada and was a bit overwhelmed by its sweetness much less the bold colors, I decided to peruse the bins with my plastic tray and my pair of tongs to find things that would satisfy my sweet tooth. Like any good panaderia, there are plenty of options to consider here (photo: http://bit.ly/1g0KkJm). At the same time, I was bedazzled by the color-blind specialty cakes that appear to be the main draw here. There were such intense dyes being used that I couldn't tell you what colors they were supposed to be. They looked like Disney cakes on crack. Among the pastries, I decided to grab a horn o'plenty filled with a custardy cream and then wisely switched to the cookie section where I was instructed to use the tissue paper instead of the tongs (photo: http://bit.ly/1IaoOrC). I got a coffee-flavored cookie, a plain one with mini-chocolate chips and in a particularly festive mood, a big sugar cookie with rainbow sprinkles (photo: http://bit.ly/1Kietha). For less than $10, I was able to have bites of all of them and still make my BART train. Hasta la vista, panadero! BAKED GOODS - 3 stars...lots of choices, variable levels of sweet tooth satisfaction AMBIANCE - 3 stars...actually plenty of room if you want to gorge on your pastries there, just don't mind the flies SERVICE - 2.5 stars...a bit tentative, probably need to work on my Spanish TOTAL - 3 stars...as panaderias go, not a bad one to try if you're in the heart of Fruitvale

This is a true staple of my childhood, and of the Bay Area. Anyone who knows good food and good…read morepizza in the East Bay knows Arizmendi. It's a surprise every day, which pizza they'll make, but it's guaranteed to always be good. The quality of the ingredients is top notch, the kind you can just taste. Even their salads, soups, and baked goods are delicious, it tastes like a quality bakery, for a place that's known for great pizza. This is definitely an if you know, you know spot, the kind you'll come back to for years on end for its consistency, its flavor, its heart. It's a staple of the East Bay for a reason, and even if you're not a vegetarian, you will adore it.

Great spot for a quick dinner at an affordable price!…read more My partner and I stopped by Arizmendi to check it out and get a daily special on a Sunday. In total, we paid $7.50, which was not bad at all! The space is spacious inside with an ample parking lot, but I would say this is more of a grab-and-go place; there is some outdoor seating. We got a pizza with tomato, olive oil, feta, and olives. The service was quick, straightforward, and we were able to get our slices within 5 minutes and it came out hot which was great! The pizza itself is on the thinner side and has a good ratio of dough to cheese. The crust/base was chewy and light and did in fact, taste healthy (in a good way)! Do I think this place is somewhere you must go to try out? Honestly, no, it is a good value pizza that tastes delicious, but I would say to only stop in if you are around the area.

I bought 4 items here 1. The Pain de mie sandwich loaf. Pain…read morede mei is French (flour.& yeast). It is called white sandwich loaf in UK & Pullman loaf in the East Coast. West coast you can only find it in Andersen Bakery. Sang Kee has it but it is way, way subpar. The one I bought here is (water roux)- the Hong Kong version which is different from the traditional French version at Andersen Bakery. They are equally good quality 2. The Portuguese Custer tart is authentic. But I prefer the one from our Chinese Bakery in San Leandro. They have the Portuguese pie crust with the English custard which is less sweet. ****A warning to American born, you might want to stick to the version here @ Napoleon because the modify version might be totally tasteless to you **** 3. The Chinese tamale. This is best so far. It has LEAN Chinese sausage, LEAN pork & egg yolk. I hope someday they will include a few dry shrimps in it. Totally tasteful WITHOUT MSG. It brings me back to the pre 2010 authenticate Chinese cooking. GOOD JOB guys & keep it up 4. The moon cake. Not as sweet as the commercial one. I want to buy 3 boxes. The red bean paste with egg yolk, the lotus paste & the mixed nut. But I only have $40 that I just got from the bank. I know Chinatown takes cash because it is non traceable. I have such wishful thinking that they might have charge service to accommodate customers who bought over $40. I ended up just buying one tamale & one moon cake.

This is my go to bakery in Oakland Chinatown! I've worked in Oakland for almost ten years now and…read moretried multiple bakeries in Chinatown and I just keep going back to this one. The Dan tats (egg tarts) are always on point and have every sort of pineapple bun available. There is a sort of system that you do have to do your best to follow when you're there. Usually there is a single file line out the door. Please don't try to cut or people will give you the ugly side eye. Once you reach inside, you need to do your best to scan the option because once you're called up, there's not much time to browse. The good thing is that if you don't know what's available - you can always point to the egg tarts (always top shelf) and pineapple buns (always in the far left display case). Once you've come a few times, you can have a general idea what's available and don't even need to browse the case anymore :) During autumn moon festival season (fall) they always have the most impressive display of beautiful moon cakes available with 0-3 yolk options and a multitude of fillings. The basic classic ones are lotus, but if that's too unfamiliar - go with all the familiar easy options. They are all amazing. And they have since increased their "if you don't make it to $10" box prices to $1. So really, just buy all the Dan tats to make it just over the $10 mark so you don't have to carry all your pastries in a plastic bag. Oh and no more than 5 pennies at a time. Rules and signs exist for a reason.
