Yay to new local business!!! Stopped in here super curious to see what they offer. Sweet Buns is a cute Asian bakery that serves up delicious, moist cakes, breads, and snacks. I absolutely love what they have here and the setup is super chill. Customers are able to take a tray and select the baked goods they want in a self-serve manner. They also serve light snacks/dishes that are made to orders, as well as ordered cakes. FINALLYYYY! For the longest time, Sweet Buns had their only store in Gainesville. Word on the street was that Yummy House would eventually open a second store in Tampa. Well, finally, after a long wait it is here. Located in a plaza that is literally right across the street from USF, I think Sweet Buns took their experience from Gainesville and made it even better here. While the location in Gainesville is not bad, space is lacking there; meaning that options were more limited, interior design was more drab, and lighting was more dim. As much as you enjoyed going there to pick up bread, it was never a totally viable option for hanging out or studying. It never had enough tables and parking could be tough. But not so in Tampa. The store in Tampa is BIG! Very big, probably twice the size as the one in Gainesville. The interior is very nicely renovated with high ceilings, nice decor, very bright, and a ton of seating. The bread and pastry selection here is also waayyyy more extensive. On top of that, Sweet Buns went a step further with their Tampa store. They serve hot food as well. Not only can you get baked good here, now you can also sit down for a meal. You have stuff like a hot beef noodle soup or perhaps some other appetizers and snacks. What better than a meal and dessert all in the same place? With that, Sweet Buns took all that was good about their Gainesville store and made it even better here. I've frequented a lot of Asian bakeries similar to Sweet Buns and it really stood out to me for all of the unique flavors. Plus the BREAD. The base bread they use for all of their pastries is so sweet and fluffy I could eat it alone honestly. One of their unique flavors, for example, was a bread roll wrapped in bacon and stuffed with sweet mayo and cucumber. It doesn't sound all that appetizing but I decided to give it a shot and the contrast between squishy sweet bread, savory bacon, and crispy fresh cucumber was heaven in my mouth. I also got a strawberry cream bun which had a strawberry crumb crust, reminiscent of the crumbs on outside of those strawberry shortcake ice cream bars! The cream inside was light and fluffy. My only complaint was that it needed more fresh strawberry inside. The amount they included was really only for looks. I also got a savory breakfast sausage roll - very good and makes me want to try a lot of their other breakfast pastries. Lastly, I got the wintermelon bread. I had high hopes because I love wintermelon tea but this was my least favorite. The wintermelon texture was very stringy and not palatable for me personally. Conveniently located near the USF area, Sweet Buns is a new bakery/cafe that really wowwed me when I walked in. I can't really think of anything like this on this side of town and feel quite pleased it landed here. I checked it out with a GF and we chose a few items to share and a few to go for family and friends. I thought everything I tried was fantastic but a personal favorite being the coconut custard... the crumb on it was A+! My friend's favorite was the Japanese cheesecake. We both thought the packaging was super cute. I wish they had more savory options that were pork free. I am a Pescetarian and my friend is Muslim so we were pretty much restricted to just the sweets but luckily there are enough options to try! Definitely one of the more authentic Asian bakeries in the Tampa area with a good variety of different pastries, buns, cakes and other desserts. Having grown up in NYC, eating these types of buns was a staple for me as snacks or breakfast items. This place really reminded me of those types of places you'd find in NY Chinatown and Flushing, except this place place is bright and clean. Its a must try if you're fan of Asian pastries or just curious to see what they are, these definitely will not disappoint. I bookmarked this place and was glad that I was finally in the area to go check it out. It's in the University Plaza and sits behind Chili's. It's such a cute store and reminds me of those cute little Paris bakeries that I love so much in Los Angeles. Although the selection isn't quite as big, there were definitely a couple of items that caught my eye. They had the huge twisted donuts that I love so much. They also have breakfast items along with other pastries. They also have cake but none that I liked so I didn't try it. The donut was good but it was a bit oily but I enjoyed it. The staff also brought out fresh items so you know it's all baked in-house. Overall, I liked it and would definitely come back. The staff was nice and helpful and greeted us. I've been to Sweet Buns Bakery a few times and I was actually the first customer today waiting a few minutes for them to open. The girl finally opened a few minutes after 9 and nothing was in the bakery cases yet. I waited over another 1/2 hour as I watched one girl slowly stock the cases, people began pouring in and the same one girl show stopped loading the bakery goods to cash them out. I waited another 15 minutes before giving up and getting only a few items as half the shelves were yet to be stocked. I still think the quality and value of these Asian pasties deserves 5 stars but the lack of readiness for their business day and disconnect of the sole employee running the front of the bakery knocks it down a star. I wouldn't have cared but I feel a bakery should be completely stocked and ready for customers when doors open. I also want to add that they don't clean the trays and tongs like they should be right now, they throw the paper liner out and wipe the handles and tongs with a towel. No real cleaning or sterilizing going on during a pandemic. On a positive note the hot dog was a new food there for me today and I ate it as I drove home, it was absolutely delicious! Giving 3 stars for the benefit of it being late and they didn't have much of a selection as things had sold out during the day. They all come in these cute little containers and the presentation is just darling. I mean I had a butterfly stamped on my cheesecake. Mine was very bland and dry, not creamy. My puppy dogs enjoyed it and will have more in the morning for breakfast. My daughter got the strawberry cream roll which needed more cream in it but had good flavor. I'll definitely be back here early to get in on the good stuff and my sweet cream or red bean pastries. YUM! All the desserts are neatly packaged and so pretty. If you love Chinese bakeries, then Sweet Buns Bakery is definitely the right place to go for all your favorite savory and sweet buns and other yummy pastries. I love Asian bread from these kind of bakeries - they really have something for everyone. Sometimes I crave sweet red buns which they have - but I recommend getting their fresh baked red bean bun instead of the pre-packaged one that they also sell. When I took home the pre-packaged one, it just crumbled and was kind of hard when opening it. Choosing a red bean bun from the window display is a much better (and fresher) choice. Their Almond Taro buns are also awesome - not too sweet which is how I like it :) When I'm craving something savory, they have these breakfast egg and ham breads that are pretty tasty. The hot dog one is my favorite savory one there. The price of each bread item is really affordable, especially for the quality and quantity that you get for it. I stumbled upon Sweet Buns while searching for milk tea in the University of South Florida area. When I saw the pictures, I was pretty excited because they reminded me of the Asian bakeries in Los Angeles California where you choose your baked goods directly from displays and place them on your shopping tray using tongs and wax paper before checking out. The garlic bread could easily be the best garlic bread I've ever had, it had a soft bouncy texture and a flavor that seems more complex and delightful than any other garlic bread I've ever had. Their custard chocolate bun is another pastry I'd definitely get again. It had the soft bouncy texture similar to the garlic bread, the bun itself was not too sweet so it balanced the rich chocolate filling. The French toast was quite spectacular - savory sweet with yet a crunchy/soft contrasting texture to it. I could see some marmalade spread on it at home making even more delightful. Also loved the milder taste and airy texture of their Japanese cheesecake. My only disappointment was that when it came to savory treats, all of them had some sort of meat in them. I went in between 9 and 10 a.m. and noticed they gradually stock the shelves. It seems like later in the day they'd have even more variety but at the same time be sold out of crowd favorites. I'm glad they had Ito En brand unsweetened green tea which complements the intense flavors of their pastries nicely. I'm not too crazy about drinking anything that has cow's milk in it although I won't object to dairy/egg in food. So, the Hong Kong milk tea being the only milk tea option they have, besides the bottled tea with dairy beverages they stock in the refrigerated section weren't options I'd enjoy. First time at this bakery. We had lunch near by and wanted to grab a durian crepes cake that I saw online. There were many pastries in the glass drawers. I grabbed some tongs and started shopping. The pricing was okay for the normal hot dog buns and coconut buns. The speciality items was more costly. One slice of durian crepes was $7.50, loaf of pineapple bread was around $7.50. I ended up purchasing an entire durian crepes ($58), a loaf of bread and about 4 pastries for $80. We sliced the cake up it came to about 12 slices. They offered fruit toppings but I declined since the cake was to be eaten the next day. They also have a package of mini plates, forks and candles. The cake was put in the fridge and tasted great the next day. It's sweeter and more moist than the other tampa location we usually go to. We will be buying the crepes here moving forward!! read more

I am a big fan of Sweet Buns! It reminds me so much of the sweet pastries from bakeries in Asia that I grew up eating. Their Portuguese egg tart is amazing, especially when warm! I was fortunate enough to snag a couple when they were just refilling the display. I love the set up and how the trays and tongs are kept on the side with paper to go on top to keep your food from touching the tray. I almost once made the mistake of getting food without the paper cover on the tray, thankfully I saw someone else grab a piece and realized they provided them. The prices are reasonable and the area looks very clean. Everyone has been very helpful and friendly, and there is adequate parking space since the bakery is located in a big plaza. This place has just newly opened and I have already been twice. That is saying a lot for me but then again, I love buns! Sweet Buns is like your typical Chinese bakery; you have the buns, cakes in the cold case and other pre-packaged sweets (they also have warm food and drinks, but I never look in their direction). One of the things I appreciate about this establishment is that they do no have the large amount of options that most Chinese bakery do; which makes it easier to choose. What makes a Chinese bun so great is the nice yeasty, perfectly sweet bread and the shiny of the bun that adds to the taste of the bread. And this bakery delivers good Chinese buns. I have had the Honey BBQ pork bun, Coconut Peanut cookie, Ham Cheese and Onion bun and Blueberry Cheese bun. The two savory options were by far my favorite, which is surprising because I am not a fan of ham. The cookie, which was not really a cookie but a flakey pastry shaped like a cookie, was a miss for me (not awful, just not good). The Blueberry Cheese bun had the makings of a good bun on the outside but the filling I didn't care for; it had a wierd texture and the favor wasn't great. As for the space itself, it was well lit, clean and roomie enough for people to sit down and eat. Sweet bun is located in the Winn-Dixie Plaza off Fowler. There is plenty of parking with a small dine in area. It's a grab and go in the storage bins ; buns average about two dollars each. There is also a refrigerated per slice cake section next to the register. They also have a menu options which include a noodle soups, rice bowls, and congee. The drinks are very limited with only coffee and milk tea on menu , with bottled water and soda . This is our 3rd time here and still new items to try. We ordered the duck rice bowl and bbq pork udon noodles. Both portions have plentiful meat , the duck was moist and flavorful, served with Napa cabbage and seasoned well with garlic. The Udon seems fresh , not positive that it is freshly made .... but the cut was square instead of round noodles. While we were dining in , the buns were being refilled 2-3 times . For the buns we got the taro, pineapple, coffee swirl, egg tart , coconut, and hotdog . The taro bun was the best - a combination of soft chewy and crispy at the same time. Texture wise it was a very unique eating experience. Pineapple bun had actual pineapple chunks as the filling. The coffee swirl bun was delicious as well but more concentrated. After sampling all the bones of the Taro was most memorable because of the sweetness level . Other buns fell short of any level of sweetness such as the coconut bun . The egg tart flavor was different borderline lightly sweetened flan. The main reason I give them a four-star is because the AC was either not working or was not cool enough at 4 PM on a Saturday afternoon. I was sweating while eating my noodle soup, which makes it slightly uncomfortable. Also I would suggest you offer larger spoons specific for soups and congee. These plastic spoons are smaller than the ones you get at Chinese fast food places. Not large enough to fit a bite of noodles and soup in the same spoon. So not having the proper utensils takes away from enjoying the noodle soup experience . I had to take three sips to get a mouthful of soup with every bite of noodles. My sweet husband and girls found this place and ordered my birthday cake from here because they knew how much I missed the Asian style bakery cake! It was so good. So we had to come visit in person so I could re-live the sensation. This is very replicated experience if Korean bakeries I used to visit up in MD and Northern Virginia which I miss daily. You pick your own pastries and goodies and pay at the counter. Some great breakfast items here. So I'm loving it but the only reason for 1 less star is because they need to rethink that cantaloupe slices in that fresh creme cakes which was in my birthday cake. They taste like carrots. Stopped in here today - it's a new Asian bakery near USF. They have another location over in Gainesville. It is owned by the same owners as Yummy House. Personally - I would rank it above Good Fortune Bakery which is at MD Oriental Market by a few notches, but not better than some bakeries in California that I've had like 85°C Bakery Café. Still - It's a great option for Tampa. Prices are fair and will run you around $2-$5 for an item. It's better if you share with someone so you can try more things. Come earlier to get the freshest baked variety. They are open fairly late til around 8pm. They also have lots of Asian hot food as well so there's something for everyone. SUMMARY: FINALLY, A MODERN CHINESE BAKERY IN TAMPA! My wife was "over the moon" the minute we stepped into Sweet Buns Bakery. The cafe was bright and well furnished, with seating for roughly 30 people. The left hand side had shelves and tall clear displays with many types of Chinese pastries. The pastries ranged in prices, but most were $2-$3 each. It was hard to choose only two buns to eat, so we ultimately ended up with three.  We ordered two pastries that were filled with whipped cream; one was adorned with fruit while the other had Oreo pieces. The third bun, which was my wife's favorite one, was the coconut bun with taro filling. All three buns tasted delicious, freshly baked, and made with care. In fact, as we were informed by the staff, all of their pastries are made on-site. The cafe also had lunch options available, which included noodle bowls and rice entrees. I'll update this review once we try these options. For a quick bite to eat or a dessert after a meal, Sweet Buns Bakery is definitely worth a try.
