DONT BUY A WHOLE CAKE, save your money. Horrible experience with a pre-ordered Japanese cheesecake that was old, dry, and had zero flavor. Japanese cheesecake should be creamy and soft, not dry, crumbly, and flavorless. For almost $60 for the smallest cheesecake (VERY small) and it was TERRIBLE tasting. Absolutely ruined our birthday celebration. So do yourself a favor and DONT ORDER A CAKE. If you must, stick to the small pastries. At least those are somewhat fresh. read more

If you have ever been to CA and miss these types of bakeries, Sweet Buns Bakery is the pioneer in Tampa. This establishment is owned by Yummy House and while YH themselves is delightful, Sweet Buns takes you to a world where you feel like a kid getting excited over Asian breads and pastries instead of candy. Upon entering, it may confusing what's going on but you just grab a tray, wax paper to line your tray, a pair of tongs and then go about your way. There is so many different breads to decide from that it is definitely overwhelming at first so expect to spend some time deciding! I highly recommend the egg tart, red bean roll, mousse cakes, and nestle bun. Not to mention most everything in the cases is below $3 so it's very affordable. It also goes along nicely with milk tea so definitely grab some to have along with your food. It's located within a plaza so there's typically plenty of parking available and the establishment itself was very clean and kept neatly organized. This was my first experience with an Asian bakery. It's cute inside! I really love the idea of getting your own basket and tongs to pick out your items on the main floor. There are SO many different things. They have sweet and savory breads, cakes, cookies, and a lot of stuff I had no clue as to what they were. They also serve hot food from their menu and have several tables for dining inside. We chose a crepe cake and a tiramisu to bring home for later. They do not have an ingredients list on anything that I saw, which is kind of odd. Though they did have an explanation of what a few of the items were in the cases as you'll see in my photos. Oh my, you would never guess this unassuming shop in a strip mall would have the most delicious sweet bread! Too much to choose from. We bought an onion floss roll that had bits of green onion, ham, cheese and what I think was a mayo type filling...soooo tasty! We also bought a sweet roll with cream filling and another with some chocolate filling...both light and heavenly. They also had prepackaged bakery items. I bought a little bag of almond cookies...crispy, light, with ample slivers of almonds and so delish! They offered some hot menu items, but we had just had lunch. So we'll have to return to try those. This is a hidden gem that you'll definitely have to make your way out to visit. I certainly will. read more

This cafe was clean, cute and well priced. The cherry dessert was decedent and will surely get me back in the door. The portion sizes are fantastic and the presentation was superb. The peach cream puff had a fluffy, creamy whip and fresh flavorful peaches packed into a light and airy shell - very good! I was pleased with all of the food choices. I was admittedly disappointed to learn they didn't have any dairy free creamer options because coffee truly would have complemented my choice and I had to make a second stop, but I will surely stop back for the sweets they were divine. read more

If you've never been to a Chinese bakery, you'll love the experience from seeing and smelling all the yummy buns, cookies, and tarts! When you first walk in, you'll want to grab a tray and your own tongs. They did have gloves during covid. You browse through the cases and choose what you like. When you're ready, you just bring your tray to the register and they'll box it for you. There are more choices in the display case next to the register which has all the refrigerated cakes, cheesecakes, mousses, etc. They also have additional items (noodle soups, coffee, congee, etc.) on the menu board, but I think that's limited during covid. As far as buns, you won't go wrong with anything. You MUST try the pineapple bun - the only place that has real pineapples in the bun. Egg tarts are yummy and flaky, but as usual, heavy in butter/fat. There's some more unique stuff like taro buns or lotus almond buns. Go for it and try it! The ingredients are usually just some form of sweetener like bean paste or vegetable. If you like things that aren't too sweet, then you'll have to try their birthday cakes. These are typical Chinese fruit cakes - a light vanilla sponge cake with layers of fruit and cream (like cool whip) in between. Chinese people LOVE these (all my family at least lolol). Try the regular, then try taro or mango. They start at $35 for larger sizes, but you might be able to purchase a small slice from the case. It is a little pricier than a regular hole in the wall Chinese bakery, but it's worth it. Enjoy! read more

I LOVE Korean pastries and unfortunately there aren't any Korean bakeries in Tampa... but Sweet Buns Bakery comes close enough! They have a wide variety of unique breads/pastries/cheesecakes/crepecakes/cookies/etc! They also do custom cakes that are made with Asian cream/icing (I don't know exactly what it is, but I swear Asian cakes have a different type of icing on them which imo are way better than the standard cakes sold in the US ). It's always a delight coming to Sweet Buns. I feel like I'm in a Chinatown bakery! It reminds me of living in China and my mom letting me pick a few buns for breakfast the next day. I love the salty hot dog buns and the egg tarts. This bakery also has the mille feuille crepe cakes - I have been meaning to come pick this up at Sweet Buns to try. I also love Japanese cheese cake. We ordered a birthday cake for my dad's 50th. The cake was delicious, light and not too sweet. I don't think any frosting was used, the exterior was coated with whipped cream and the fruits on top was glazed with some sweet sauce. Asian bakeries are probably my favorite places to visit and I'm so happy this place is now in Tampa! The hardest thing was trying to resist buying everything! When you walk in, the baked goods are brightly lit in easy to open plexiglass. You take a tong, a sheet of wax paper, and a tray and fill it up with whatever you want. (Be careful, the tray has a tendency to be slippery with the wax paper.) Everything was reasonably priced about 1.95$ and up. I shared a onion roll with pork floss and it was delicious. We also ate a Napoleon that was extremely moist with a cream outside topped with flaky bits. I love eggs tarts but not all bakeries make them well, but Oh My goodness, the Portuguese egg tart was to die for! The flavor was so eggy and delectable with a perfect crust. I normally like my crust more flaky but this was still very enjoyable. I don't think it would as good to save for later though. We also purchased a almond sponge cake, taro crinkle cookies, walnut brittle, and a few other things. Our total was about $40. I still haven't finished everything, but I cannot wait to go back to try the savory foods from the menu. Definitely stop by if you are on the fence about trying this place. Well let me tell you, it's just the right amount of sweetness! I had a taro bun, red bean bun, and some sort of coffee flavored paste filled bun. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS! The style of the shop is you pick up a tray and add what you want to your order, definitely dangerous to your wallet! However, these bakery items are reasonably priced! It wasn't until I got to the counter and discovered their cakes and their mousse! And could I resist? Nope! So I got my happy little self two mousses, a mango and an orange one! All items were moist and not dry when we ate them. The pork bun and onion floss bread were savory and the monk fruit and strawberry cake were sweet. The favorites were the pork bun and onion floss bread. The strawberry cake was pink and moist but had not flavor. It just tasted like bread which as disappointing. Perfect tender jiggly Japanese cheesecake. It's nothing like you have had before. Fluffy like a pound cake yet a puff of sweet air in your mouth. Just WOW! Not overly sweet either. I can't express how excited I am that the owners of Yummy House decided to open a Chinese bakery in the USF area. I don't know how we got so lucky because their restaurants aren't anywhere near this area. Not that I'm complaining because I'll be able to go to this bakery all the time! This place is a food photographer's dream. When you walk in there are multiple display cases holding the most beautiful pastries and buns. They also sell cooked items behind the counter. You can look up on the menu boards to see what they currently offer. So far my absolute favorite pastry has been a sweet bun that's filled with Bavarian cream. I swear I could hear angels singing the first time I bit into one. My other favorite is the "sponge cake crumble bun" that has sponge cake, sweet milk cheese, jam, and powdered sugar. I tried a good variety of the desserts and they all ranged from great to good. The only one that I absolutely did not like was a packaged cake slice with four different colored squares. Considering how many desserts I've tried that's great odds. I still need to try their refrigerated desserts, such as mango pudding. They have savory items in the display cases ranging from BBQ pork to chicken sausage in buns, croissants, etc. I was surprised what a great value everything is. The buns and desserts are usually around $2. If you get a soup it's less than $8 and you get a great portion of noodles and meat. If I was to offer some constructive criticism I found it strange that they had chicken listed as a topping you could get for noodle dishes, but when I tried to order it they told me they didn't have it and erased it from the menu board in front of me. They didn't have it the next time I visited either. That's the topping I would have wanted the most. Also, at many Chinese places you have the option of getting shrimp or pork wonton. Many people don't like one or the other but here you have to get them combined, which I don't like. These are minor quibbles though and overall I think this place is wonderful. I may or may not have visited five or six times during their first week. I will be coming here regularly without question. read more

I had an terrible experience with this shop's woman boss when I ordered and picked up a cake for my mother in law's 90th birthday. The cake is not cheap it cost $50+. They only gave me 8 candles, but I need 9. When I asked for one more small candle which I have every right to do so, she blankly refused me and she was arrogant and mean. She asked me to pay for a new pack of 8 candles. She had grossed me out. The store is in business of selling birthday cakes and they should prepare for extra lousy candles and the necessities. I haven't seen a shop so short-sighted and greedy just to make a few cents. Although they had make a few cents from me this time and I will never want to come back to this store again. I absolutely love this place. I haven't tried everything here but I'm working on it. That being said, I have loved everything that I've gotten from here so far. Nothing was disappointing. Everything has been delicious and I love how large all of the pastries are. One is plenty filling for a snack or as a quick breakfast on the go. The value is incredible!
