This place is a bread wonderland! If you are a paniphile (a person with a fondness for bread, get your mind out of the gutter), this is the store for you. We went on a Friday afternoon and it was empty, which is just as well because I could take my time ogling all the baked goods. When I finally narrowed it down, I picked up a tray, placed the parchment paper on it, grabbed some tongs, and proceeded to load up my tray. Checkout was quick and easy, and I couldn't wait to get home to indulge over the next two days. The strawberry pastry didn't travel great, as some of the cream had dissolved, but it still was light and fluffy with just a hint of strawberry flavor. The pineapple bun was also delicious. I just wish more of the fruit flavor shone through. The breakfast pastry was unique and tasty, and I really enjoyed the sunflower/caramel cookies I bought - weird but good. They have plenty of seating, plus they serve coffee drinks, so this would be a great place to stop in for breakfast or an afternoon snack. read more

MAKE THE BOOTY GO WHACK! Now that I've got your attention, let us proceed. This has been on my list for a while, but its easy to forget about since I usually eat breakfast at home and its hard to tear me away from First Watch/Shelly's etc. I went in the late morning today and was surprised at the amount of space inside. One half is the actual baked goods/cashier station and the other half is customer seating. The space is nigh spotless and shiny. You grab a tray and tongs, grab your desired item and place it on the tray. Then you go to the cashier and pay. Hygienic and clean! There are many types of buns/rolls with fillings and in a corner lies cold items/drinks. The savory items or ones containing meats/eggs are on the far left. Most of the buns are in the $2.25- 3.00 range and cake slices are between $4-6. I got one Portuguese egg tart, one Taro Roll, and and one piece of Japanese cheesecake. Id give them all a 3/5. Before I am tarred and feathered, I'll preface by saying while I love Asian savory dishes from different countries, I am unfamiliar with many of the Asian buns and desserts outside of India. For reference see "bao" dish from my Fuzion spice review. The Japan Cheesecake was light and fluffy. It's texture was between western cheesecake and a traditional flour cake. It definitely tastes less sweet (Though without a nutrition label you cant definitively say it is less sweet.) The Taro Bun is a soft bun with taro paste inside. I am unfamiliar with Taro except for Taro boba Tea. It tasted like a derivative of sweet potato . To me it was solid, but perhaps it works better as a cold drink. The Egg tart felt a mix of scrambled eggs and custard. The flour crust was very light and reminded me of phyllo dough. The one inches past the others, but overall theyre all about the same flavorwise. All three tasted fresh and there was no outward problem. I just wasnt super enthused. I was in the area and wanted to see what the rage was about as they had good ratings. The interior is bright, clean, and I love that there is a seating area as well. You grab a tray and a pair of tongs and find pastries/buns to your hearts content. Unfortunately, I was there on Sunday right at 9am and they didn't have anything fresh ready and out. I think maybe 4 types was out and ready by 9:10am. I asked for a particular bun and the young lady told me it probably wouldn't be ready until 10am. My bad for having the expectations of if you say you're open at 9am, you'd have all your buns or most out and ready to go at 9. If you need more time, then say you're open at 9:30am. It's their business, I'm sure they have a say on their operating hours... So here I am with two young children under 5 waiting as patiently as we could for some more options to come out. Needless to say, I gave up on waiting after 15 minutes and decided to just pick what was available. The buns were tasty, the price was on the higher end than what I was expecting, and the hours are questionable. I guess I need to figure out the algorithm of that sweet spot where you're early enough to beat the weekend rush and actually have options, but not too late where they run out of items. read more

My mom is from Hong Kong, and she was SO happy when I brought her here. Everything here reminded her of home, and she was especially delighted to see they had authentic Hong Kong milk tea on the menu -- something we haven't had in a very long time since we live in West Palm Beach. Making this one of our stops on our short Tampa trip was well worth it. What I think makes this bakery stand out from other Asian bakeries is variety and size. The pineapple buns, custard buns, sausage buns, pretty much whatever Chinese bun you can think of -- they got 'em and they're larger than my two fists combined (ok, I do have pretty small hands tho). They even have coconut egg tarts, which I have never seen in anywhere else in Florida. Those are kinda jumbo sized, too. And then there's a whole thing of CAKES to choose from. We loved that some of them come in little containers with little forks you can take to go, or that you can choose from their display of cake slices by the register. SO. MANY. FLAVORS. If I lived here, I would have loved to order myself an entire custom made cake (not to mention the entire store). These Chinese cakes are so creamy, soft and not too sweet -- forever my favorite kind -- and I'm so glad this place had exactly what we had been looking for. This place is a must-visit. Their buns are the best in town. They give you a tray and your own tongs so it's super COVID-safe, no cross contamination with utensils which is great. The BBQ pork buns are seriously the best- we love the ones at Yummy House dim sum & the owners are the same. We don't eat them from anywhere else. The prices are great. I don't there's a single bun that I've tried that I haven't liked. We love the fluffy cheesecake as well, super light, not sweet. The other cheesecakes are great too, I'd skip the mousse cake. Their desserts really hit the spot! I owe Chris W. a review of all the goods I tried so this is jumping the line and getting written next. I sent my sister to get a plethora of baked goods for TWO people. She came back with EIGHT different pastries. It's as if she thinks we are both 300 lbs. Sure, she runs and does spin, but I gave birth a week ago and currently am not moving, so my calorie intake is much smaller. But I digress. I really liked everything, but my favorite was the cross cream bun (not it's actual name. Since she got everything, I'm going by description). There was so much cream in it! It was absolutely delicious. There is a coconut bun that has cream down the middle (we also got that one), but I much prefer this one. The more cream the better. Next by a slim difference was the chocolate crepe cake. Again, tons of cream and the layers were so light and fluffy. I devoured it (I'm pretty sure my sister only got a bite). After that was the matcha mousse cake. I love mousse cake because it's not dry. Regular cake can often dry out, but this mousse one stayed moist for days. I also enjoyed the matcha sponge cake. It has a spiral of cream, in my opinion it could have more cream! It might have been a tad dry because it took three days for me to get to it. The egg tart was nice and flaky. My sister liked it and she's comparing it to LA Asian baked goods. She said the pineapple tart was really good. She also got a pastry that had pork in it (so I couldn't try it) and said next time she would pass on that one. I counted, that was all eight. I've heard my sister talk about this place so much so I definitely needed to make a stop there. When I walked in I was greeted with a delicious baked good smell. It was awesome! Seeing all these buns and cakes, i was like a kid in a candy shop. Unlike the name, they don't only sell sweet buns, but there's a lot of savory stuff there too. That's my favorite! Love this bakery! It's cute, neat, organized, and bright. All the pastries are displayed nicely and it's really easy to navigate and see what you're getting. I have been here a few times and the pastries are always so soft and light, even when I get a few and take them home they still remain soft and fresh. The workers are always kind, I've never had a bad experience here. My first Asian bakery experience in Tampa and it was a-ok! Sweet Buns reminds me of Sweet Hut in Atlanta - i used to go on what seems like the daily. Now i can't remember the last time i went. Yikes. I was really only interested in the egg tarts. I ended up trying the coconut crumb jam bun since it looked and sounded super unique. Unfortunately, it was pretty dry and looked much better than it tasted. The egg tarts were the saving grace of Sweet Buns for me! Very tasty, with some flaky layers in the tart shell. It seemed like it could use a little more color, though. Overall, not the best bakery I've had, but based on the other reviews, maybe one of the best in the area. read more

Birthday cake order!! I recently ordered a birthday cake here and the process was so easy. They only need a 24hour notice. They have many designs on their website or you can look at the photos at the bakery. For round cakes, theres 8inch, 10in, and 12in. They come standard with a fruit filling and chiffon style cake. As this is an Asian bakery, the sweetness level of the cake is moderate but perfect for my preference. I ordered my cake without fruit but had a taro filling instead. My family loved it! The buns look big & tasty, but are basically somewhat underdone batter with very little filling or flavour. For example, the green tea matcha red bean bun: didn't taste of either of those ingredients. And there was hardly any filling. I took three bites & threw the rest in the garbage. Coconut tart -- you'd be hard pressed to find any of the named ingredient. Chocolate bun that promised to be filled with chocolate ganache -- also almost all bun Portuguese egg tart, taro bun... also disappointing. Three strikes and you're out. read more

I was very excited to try this bakery! I got there around 4:30 and the selection was half gone. So get there early. I bought a lemon loaf, coconut cream bun, and the Portuguese egg tart. Now I don't know how others open the lemon loaf package but for us it was incredibly hard to do in the car. The plastic lid was stapled on to the tray the loaf sits on. It was nice that the package includes a mini fork for us to enjoy the dessert. I didn't love the coconut cream bun. I thought the cream was a bit watery, not a nice dense creamy cream like other Asian bakeries. The service was okay. There were two ladies working at the time, one was wiping down the tongs and the other was making an espresso drink. I was in line for almost 5 minutes before the lady finished making the espresso drink and rang me up. Now I don't mind waiting for her while she finished up an order, but she (or the lady that's wiping down the tongs) could have greeted customers who are waiting in line instead of complaining about some past customers. Just a "Give us a minute" or "I'll be right there" will do. The price was good. The atmosphere was nice. A warm and cozy coffee shop with seats on the right side when you walk in. I can see myself enjoying a cup of coffee with a dessert here. read more

As a customer I would expect everything to be out when the doors open. I don't have to wait till we're driving thru Gainesville to get my Sweet Buns fix You can't go wrong with anything in this place but I highly recommend the red bean bun (it looks so pretty too) their egg and lemon tarts are super Tasty (especially warmed up) and the hotdog buns (I know it's odd for Americans lol) but I promise it's pretty tasty! Also unlike the Gainesville branch, this one serves hot meals for a reasonable price! I've tried their roast duck rice bowl and pork ones. I'm so excited about this second Asian bakery in the Tampa bay area! The store is clean and bright. You serve yourself most of the pastries and bring them up to the cashier to pay. They had a wide variety of breads and pastries, although I did not see cocktail buns (very sad face). But they had uncut sweet milk breads, so I'll be making Taiwanese toast tonight!!! Sweet Buns also makes some noodle and rice dishes. I ordered a Hong Kong milk tea and the fried chicken rice dish. I was a bit disappointed by both. The tea was not sweetened. Sure, I could add sugar from the condiments bar (and I did), but every time I've ever had hot milk tea, it has already been sweetened, usually with sweetened condensed milk. I would think that the default should be pre-sweetened, not the reverse. As for the fried chicken rice dish, well, the fried chicken was fried, so I can't completely complain. But I had wanted it to be like the Chinese fried chicken I used to eat as a kid in San Francisco (super crispy) OR like salt and pepper chicken, since this is a Yummy House derivative. Instead, I had fried chicken thigh, sliced, and drizzled with a sauce that I could not quite identify. It was served with underseasoned rice and cabbage. I was wishing for some ginger or garlic flavoring to the cabbage. I really should have ordered the noodle soup or the curry beef tendon stew, but I was curious about the fried chicken. I'll have to return to try a different hot dish and sample some of their pastries. I agree with Boon's assessment that they should have some boba drinks or other Asian-style drinks. (Or at least get the Hong Kong milk tea right!) Parking is reasonably plentiful in the private lot, but the minimall itself is one of my least favorites for parking. "Sweet Buns"! And no, I am not using a pick up line on you. This place is awesome! When you walk in you can appreciate the cute-ness of the place. There are cases with buns of all styles and then there are some desserts atop those cases as well as larger desserts in a larger display case near the front of the store as well in addition to some desserts and savory snacks, some milli crepe cakes in addition to some other goodies and some drinks on the perimeter shelving. The clear large rectangular cases in the middle of the store are self serve, you take a tray lined with bakery paper (or set up your own, paper is found on the shelf above the trays, and a pair of tongs and go to town. The buns in the case are definitely sweet (sugary) for sure but not overwhelmingly so which I appreciate. In addition to sweet treats they also offer some savory "buns" with meat and things like individual pizzas. There are also food offerings such as noodles, congee, and soups. On my most recent visit I was told that there isn't any hot food that is veg friendly, the soups are made with chicken broth so there is no hot food that is vegetarian friendly here. That would be my only gripe but hey, that is the audience they want to target to. It is a shame, in my opinion, because although many of their sweets contain dairy there are vegetarian friendly options here despite the hot food. I find the combinations of flavors of the buns to be delightful. I also feel that each of the desserts have a great texture. It is a challenge to limit my indulgence after carrying out some goodies here--don't say I did not warn you. This newish addition to the USF area has taken the area by storm. It came to Tampa by way of Gainesville Florida which is my understanding and it has the same ownership as Yummy House. The staff has always been friendly and personable on my visits. Finally Sweet Buns is in town. I've been to the one in Gainesville a few times and it was always a must stop! My first experience of these sweet and savory buns was in Atlanta at Sweet Hut. It's the same set up but probably has a little bit more variety. The buns are nice and soft inside. My favorites are the ones with the filling inside. It keeps it more flavorful. The egg tart was good as well as the lemon one with lemon filling. The peach filled bun was good but needs more peaches. The ones with no filling are not as flavorful but they are soft. But just simply reminds me of plain bread. The chocolate mousse cake is light and there are some other beautiful desserts I'd like to try in the future as well as their wonton egg noodle soup. The location in Gainesville I don't believe had the hot dishes so that's nice to see. The location is great. Bobacup is close by as well as a Pho place in the same plaza. The begin of Sweet Bun I have try is at Gainesville. Since I have been to many oriental bakery, I would place this one a bit above middle of the pack. It is similar to Sweet Hut at Atlanta. It definitely cannot compare to Sweet Hut near Gwinnett Place at Atlanta but it definitely hold it own for Tampa Bay Area. They have sweet and salty bun on display. It is perfect location near USF. It is great to have bun for breakfast with lesser price. Even if you come for lunch, it is better than the choice of fast food. A bowl noodle definitely better than fast food with same price. The only thing they lack off is they need special drinks like fruit tea, boba tea, and WiFi. We were here for their pig feet noodle and the wonton noodle. Not the best but good enough. read more

Why 5 stars? Because I want to pay rent and sleep here. --- --- --- Chris W, the person solely responsible for all of my Yelping north of Busch Gardens and east of 275, has kept me thoroughly up-to-date on the construction updates of Sweet Buns. When he let me know that it was finally open, I made it a priority to visit that upcoming weekend. The cliche "I felt like a kid in a candy store" is overused, but I don't know what other way I can accurately portray what it felt like walking in here. I felt like a kid in a buns store? The setup here is that you pick up a tray and a set of tongs to grab whatever you like from the cases. One case is full of sweet options, while the other case has plenty of savory snacks. I came primarily for the sweets, but was actually even more impressed by the savory items! I'm going to do a very bad job of mentioning the particular items that I ended up with because everything here has something in common: its name is just like 2-3 words that sound heavenly, especially when paired together. Names like "Butter Cream Cake" and "Coconut Mango Crumble" are prevalent here. For savory snacks, I picked up something that was essentially a hot dog inside of a croissant and another thing that was pretty much a biscuit with ham, onion and chives. Both were stellar. The hot dog was pretty simple, but reminded me of a kolache, which I love very much but are hard to find in Tampa. The other biscuit was perfect. It reminded me of something you'd find at Callie's Hot Little Biscuit in Charleston. For sweets: Something in the shape of a hot dog bun with oreos and whipped cream. It was everything you'd hope for given that description. And very large. Taro Bun - I love taro. I love sweet buns. This was what I hoped it would be. Some kind of coconut taro thing - do you like how I use the word "thing" to describe something? It most closely would have resembled a sponge cake size/shape. I didn't love this as much as the other things. Mango Pudding - I also didn't love this one quite as much. It was pricey for a very small portion. Probably the only thing here I found overpriced. Some kind of coconut crumb cake - A texture one dreams of. I was actually checking out with my existing order of everything listed above when they came out and started re-stocking the shelves. This was the thing on the cart that caught my eye and the first thing the employee was re-stocking. I had to have it. I finished checkout, grabbed one and walked right back into line to pay again. It was absolutely worth it. Sometimes Chris W likes to point out that I say in reviews that I'll be back often to a place but then three years go by and I have two check-ins. I'm a regular at the original Gainesville location of Sweet Buns, so I didn't expect the massive assortment, packed with customers, and savory dishes available at the Tampa location. This is Tampa's first legitimate tong-grabbing-goodies bakery. Yeah sure, there is a terrifying Chinese bakery in Evergreen Plaza... but Sweet Buns is clean and modern with so many goodies to choose from. My favorites are their savory breakfast themed buns, mango pudding, and cheesecakes. Also, their Hong Kong hot milk tea is so delicious!!! It tastes just like the milky version that I've gotten in breakfast shops in Hong Kong. There were many customers here eating soups and menu items. But, I just come here for the prepared baked goods, sweets, and a hot tea to wash it down. I just wish that they had more extended hours. read more

Ordered a cake for my birthday. Paid extra for mango mouse cake. The baker forgot to put any flavor. Cake looks awesome, the sponge is great but it has no flavor. Wasted 2 hours of my time to drive, I have a cake that no body ate. They don't respond to complaints. Waste of $$ and spoiled my birthday. Yay to new local business!!! Stopped in here super curious to see what they offer. Sweet Buns is a cute Asian bakery that serves up delicious, moist cakes, breads, and snacks. I absolutely love what they have here and the setup is super chill. Customers are able to take a tray and select the baked goods they want in a self-serve manner. They also serve light snacks/dishes that are made to orders, as well as ordered cakes. The prices here are very reasonable and it's nice to be able to just grab a little $3/4 dessert that's super fresh. I look forward to coming back here and trying as much as I can! read more
