Was in New Bern recently and looked up breakfast places on Yelp, yes I use Yelp when visiting new places, and came across Baker's Kitchen. It is located in the historic area a couple blocks up from the waterfront. We were able to park a couple of stores down on the street for free and I went in to get some baked goods for the ride home. It was just past 2:00 and they close at 2, but were happy to let me get some to go things. Now it is not often that I see something new at a bakery and yet it happened here, a cornbread cookie. Never seen one never heard of one before so I had to get one and both the Mrs. and myself were happy I did. Delicious as well as the other things we bought. Not much has changed since my last review, this is still our family's favorite place to go for a traditional breakfast, brunch, or lunch in the New Bern area. All the baked goods are very fresh as you'd expect being that they are made fresh daily right on premises. The food is home cooked and inviting. The smells alone are enough to pull you in. Do expect a short wait on most weekends for sure. This time I went outside the box for what this places serves because I was craving some fried seafood. Well, just so happens they do that pretty well. Though my portion wasn't some massive thing, I definitely left satisfied by the very plump and perfectly breaded shrimp. The squash casserole and cole slaw that I chose for sides were also very tasty. The slaw was not mayo heavy, just how I like it. No complaints for anyone else at the table either, this will continue to be our go to place! read more

Ambiance great, service great I Used to love breakfast here. It was good, quality food. It would seem that food quality has been sacrificed to keep prices low. The effort is appreciated but a poor choice (if true). Sausage tasted more like black bean and sawdust, Dutch potatoes used a lousy canned cheese, bread was substandard on French toast. Serve smaller quantities or raise prices, or both. Never sacrifice quality read more

A great spot in New Bern for breakfast or lunch! I arrived very close to closing time at 2pm, they were no longer taking any table parties. I ordered to go, then I mentioned I was an hour from where I'd end up eating. They quickly offered a table and I was able to eat my fresh delicious meal. I had the southern hamburger plate. Great flavor and perfectly prepared. Also had a side of okra. Piping hot and delicious. The server was attentive and kind. Very clean and neatly kept dining area. Will return with friends! Had the waffles with Butter syrup and Biscuits and Gravy. Portions were great. Waitress was super friendly. The "world famous" syrup and the waffle didn't have much flavor. The sausage gravy didn't taste like sausage. I really wanted to love this place. Visited on a Saturday morning and after a quick wait, we had the most delicious breakfast. I can vouch for the pecan pancakes with butter syrup. We made sure to visit again the next day before we left town. My order was slightly wrong but our waitress was quick to get it taken care of. I highly recommend giving this place a try when you're in New Bern. * I would recommend moving the host stand closer to the front door. Wait staff and customers gathering around the stairs is an accident waiting to happen. read more

Terrible wait, the queue system is wild as you basically make a reservation and then leave to come back at some point which is not communicated by the wait staff. As a party of two, it seemed that bigger parties always took precedent over your place in line. Having the yelp queue available showed 4 parties of 2 ahead of us, and then several party sizes after us...and still multiple parties were sat before any of the 2 persons. We watched them seat an elderly lady with a prosthetic leg upstairs...food is good, but that has never been the problem. Just go to Yoders in Grifton, at least that location is organized. read more

My wife and I came here for breakfast while in town for a wedding. We used the yelp waitlist app to get checked in. In total, the wait was about 20 minutes and during that time we walked around town. For food I ordered the chicken and waffles. It came with their signature maple butter syrup. The food was very good! Why this is a 5 star for me is that the meal was very tasty, the chicken to waffle ratio was perfect, the uniqueness of the syrup was new and worked really well, and the quantity was very filling for the price. Would highly recommend this place. It was very busy inside but the staff was extremely effecient. read more

We were at Bakers Restaurant on May 14,2025 for lunch we both ordered the meatloaf it was terrible and cold, my girlfriend had squash and collards, I had string beans and sweet potato fries, of all the items that we had her collards were good and my sweet potato fries were good, the meatloaf wasn't even warm and the bbq sauce was bad, I was burping for hours afterwards, we will Never go back there again ! Our waitress was very good and very attentive. We were there about 1 1/2 years ago and (at that time Bakers was great) maybe someone else bought this restaurant because it wasn't good at all. read more

On a wonderful trip to New Bern the most disappointing thing was Sunday breakfast at Baker's Kitchen. My wife and I waited 35 minutes to be seated at a small bright table. Very clean. Our server came over quickly and brought us coffee which was good. Downhill from here. Our breakfast was delivered cold, both orders! I hate cold food. 2nd time up it was much warmer but not hot. OK we ate. The food was bland. The Dutch Potatoes were nothing more than cheesy hash browns, the butter syrup is butter with sugar. Too sweet. The sausage patties made me quite sick having to make it back to our air b&b double time. I'm so sorry we ever ate there and will never, ever do so again. read more

This restaurant has the best Southern breakfast in downtown New Bern, NC! While other people are Black Friday shopping, filling their carts, my husband and I would rather fill our bellies (as if we really need it after being stuffed the previous day!) My husband alllwaaayyysss orders the Hungry Farmer and soommetimes will change it up, if I suggest it, but it has everything you want in a breakfast! I usually order something a little smaller and steal his Dutch Potatoes because that is my favorite side. I could probably eat a whole casserole of it, it's that delicious! If you still have room or want dessert for later, they have a bakery case filled with cupcakes, muffins, pies, and cookies! Our favorite is the Peanut Butter Pie. You can order a whole pie and I sometimes order one to have with our Thanksgiving meal. read more

There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.
