Chicken and waffle (butter syrup)
John C.

Saw the large numbers of great reviews and had to give it a try. Place seems to always be busy and now I know why. The best french toast I've ever had, not sure of its their homemade bread or the butter syrup but it was fantastic. Eggs and bacon perfectly cooked. The Dutch potatoes are like hashbrown casserole- delicious. Update - tried the chicken and waffle breakfast today, Best I've ever had ! Inside is clean and uniquely decorated. Highly recommend even if it makes it harder for me to get a table

Avocado toast

I decided to return to Baker's Kitchen and must say this was a better experience. Baker's Kitchen is located inside a building built in 1911. Like a lot of older buildings, it was abandoned and then renovated for what you see today. They kept the 14-foot ceilings and left the brickwork exposed. My waitress this time was more experienced, so things went smoother. I decided to skip anything that would have the butter syrup and went with the avocado toast. I would have liked sourdough bread instead of wheat, but that wasn't an option, and it wasn't really toasted either. But the avocado was a good amount and tasty. I also had scrambled eggs and breakfast potatoes. They put the eggs on the toast, though, instead of on the side. This seems to be the popular place in town for breakfast.

Chicken & Waffles with butter syrup

Visited here for the second time this trip. This time got the cheese omelet with cheddar and added mushrooms and sausage. All were packed inside and sprinkled on the outside for a photogenic look. I was also able to substitute a sweet potato biscuit for the regular one for no extra charge. It was excellent without the gravy but was just as good with it as well. It had the same texture as the but with a consistent sweet potato flavor and subtle sweetness. Definitely try it if you come in!

Donut holes appetizer

We had a wonderful experience today while visiting with family. We were seated promptly, and our server, Amy, was an absolute pleasure. We tried a new appetizer--the fried donut holes--and they were delicious. If that wasn't enough sweetness, the hot buttered syrup definitely took it over the top! Even though the restaurant was very busy for a Wednesday, Amy did an excellent job managing the floor. She made sure we had everything we needed and kept our coffee and water refilled without us ever having to ask. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and we'll definitely be back!

Wow, can't say enough good things about the biscuits and gravy and cinnamon roll!! They are great in size and excellent in flavor. 5/5 stars!!

We decided to try Baker's while in town. Service was excellent, along with the fluffiest waffles, crispy bacon and eggs!! Nice decor also!

From the hot coffee to the butter syrup, we thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast here. I had the Farmers Wife, which was great. My hubby had the chicken fried chicken. Our server highly recommended the chicken fried chicken and it was amazing. Amazing. Highly recommended!

The ambiance is very comfy, local down town. Their food is very good, I'm not a person the eats syrup but their's is amazing. Can"t get any better. Service, it is spot on. Definitely recommend to visitor and locals as well.

I can't say enough good things about this restaurant! When we told the server that we were from out of town and asked what butter syrup was, she brought us some samples and suggested we put it in our coffee. Delicious! We enjoyed our waffles and French toast with fresh fruit. The server also brought over a complimentary cinnamon roll in a bag to take home. Such a nice gesture! The restaurant is nice, much larger on the inside than it would appear from the outside. What a New Bern gem!

I have been wanting to try this place for years but my work schedule made it difficult. Finally my opportunity arrived and Bakers Kitchen quickly became a top contender in breakfast joints for me. The biscuits are the best I've ever had and the butter syrup can go on anything and make it delicious The staff was friendly and attentive; positively professional. The charming wood furnishings tie the whole vibe together. This place is great!

Didn't happen to us, but when we arrived, there was indeed a train sitting there, and some cars in front, well, they weren't going anywhere anytime soon. Inside is all vibes, kind of set up like an old pharmacy, but slinging cocktails instead, and I have to say, the cocktails were very tasty and well priced. All the tables were full of friend and family groups playing board games and enjoying various flatbreads and libations. Seems like the kind of place the local neighborhoods enjoy and spend quite a bit of time at. At the moment, can't remember the names of the cocktails we got, its been a few months. But I do remember the toasts. This place doesnt have a kitchen in a traditional sense, more like a prep area where they bring ingredients together (that I imagine are made off site) and toast it up to present you with some pretty unique combos and flavors. Honestly, a great way around some of the health code restrictions that start to apply to more in-depth operations while still having a robust menu. We ordered a variety for the 4 of us, as this was dinner that evening. Gettin Figgy with it was a favorite, as were the Pig and the Goat, and the Reuben. Their version of a Cubano was alright, but as could be the case you'd imagine, the pork was a little dry. The caprese was the only one we got that seemed to be a universal thumbs down, the avocado spread wasn't working with the other ingredients. Definitely would come back for some of these toasts, and drinks!

We made a reservation and were 30 minutes late on a Saturday night. They said they would try to save our reservation. It was half empty when we arrived at 7 pm. Tried to seat us inside at a mediocre table. Glad I asked to sit outside. Beautiful, huge patio. I recommend pushing to stay away from the door inside. There is an annoying bug zapper (why?!) there that kept going off. Glad we didn't sit at the table right near the door. Dead bugs would have been in our food. We had the feta dip appetizer. Said the pitas were toasted. Not. The dip had more cucumber salad than anything. Our server was very accommodating. He raved about the Biltmore Riesling. I don't usually like sweet wine which it was not. Great recommendation. I also tried the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Riesling for the win! I had the unicorn fish. First time. Perfectly cooked. Yum. My husband had the chicken sandwich and asked to add a fried green tomato and have baby cauliflower. Two upcharges for an additional $2. Worth it. My son had the chicken Parmesan. He liked it. Just small amount of chicken. Overall, liked it. Would love to go back!

Beautiful, jazzy, Art Deco space. They had wonderful cocktails to choose from, cold draft beers, a big wine list, and very interesting food. I wish they were a little softer, but the egg rolls were delicious, and the mac and cheese was shockingly good. Probably the best I ever had. They have these really cool individual rooms that you can rent with friends if you want to make a special night of feeling like you're in a different world back in time. Definitely worth a visit.

The watermelon, though, was a shocker. It was grilled! It had a really great smoky flavor that was totally unexpected and the dressing was light and fresh. The main room had a lot of room and good bar seating. I read the reviews and wanted some seafood and the fish and chips caught my eyes. I was also going to try the clam chowder but the last two reviews were not appealing so I asked the waitress other options. I was offered the Tomato Bisque soup which was very good . Very creamy and tomatoey. For the main course I changed from the fish and chips to The Bounty, and unfortunately it was NOT. The meal was fried with French Fries and Cole slaw. I mentioned I didn't like coleslaw so they left it off but didn't offer any as a substitute or knock the soup price off. The meal came with 5, average sized shrimp with the tails off, what was supposed to be scallops, and small fried oysters. The fries were better than the oysters and scallops, and I believe the scallops were imitation because they did not have any grain when I cut them. I wasn't asked if I wanted tarter or cocktail sauce and just got tarter. I had to chase down the waitress for water since I didn't want anything else. I'm not sure this would make me a return trip but every place is worth a try

Upon the chef's recommendation we ordered the veal instead of the lamb chops that we actually wanted and they did not have. My plate was extremely salty and my husbands was tough. The only positive thing I have to say about the food was that the fruit and burrata salad presented well and tasted good. A classy restaurant would have made it right. They made no such attempt other than our server apologizing profusely. I cannot recommend this anyone in good faith. Extremely disappointing

I went because that sounded really good. Pro Tip: They only sell lobster rolls on Sunday. It appears food cost are rising and the orders don't fully justify the expense in the customers eyes. The menu still looked good so I stayed. Olivia was my server and she was great. Super knowledgeable about the menu with great suggestions. I wanted the brussel sprouts but was a little reluctant because of the beets. She said it was good and give it a try. I glad I did what a treat. The brussels were lightly fried. The real treat was the flavor profile. The bitterness of the brussels, pickled sweetness of the beets, creaminess of the goat cheese with the crunch of the pecans....wow. So good and it was lightly dressed with the pickling liquid. I went with the jerk salmon for the entree. The salmon was cooked perfect and had a nice crust on it. It was served with a citrus (mango forward) salsa on top of jasmine coconut rice. It is all a great idea and the combo was good. Only feedback was the red bell peppers seemed out of place and took away from the dish and the jasmine rice was a little too bland. I could taste the hint of coconut which was good but some seasoning or a touch of salt on the rice would have paired great with the salmon and orange glaze. Over a gem in New Bern with great service.
