Furikake croisaant, tropical scone
alexandra k.

Easy and plentiful street parking on at Sat morning at 10! As a first timer, it was a bit of a maze to find, but they have a lovely central communal outdoor space they share with the other shops that is dog friendly! There were so many pastries to choose from but I ordered the furikake croisaant since it came recommended by a friend and the tropical scone (coconut, passion fruit and papaya). The croissant was airy, although didn't have as distinct lamination as non-vegan croissant. I likes the umami savory flavor and the sesame is roasted which adds a fragrance and crunch. I did appreciate that the scone wasn't overly sweet, but its tropical-ness was super subtle and I don't think I wouldn't have guessed its flavor if I ate it blind. FYI, there is a 4% surcharge for paying with credit cards. And other reviews mentioned a rewards stamp card, but I wasn't offered one! :(

The location is great to find a street parking. The store located in a small yard. Looks like a totally different ambiance in the neighborhood. Awesome selection for Vegan baked goods! Always friendly with the customers so keep going back :) I love the black sesame cookies since it's not that sweet but nutty. Generally their bakes goods are not too sweet or greasy. Perfect for small deserts or for simple meals. The croissant must be so fluffy and light. I didn't try it yet but I can tell by the other pastries. Texture is so nice.

Established over a year ago, Bakers Bench is a sweet treat for yourself or to take someone special too and enjoy their delectable selection of pastries, kind and attentive customer service, and the triple threat... an aesthetically pleasing outdoor space to take in all that wonderfulness! On my visit tried 3 pastries: apple turnover, croissant, and a scone -- results:

Wow!!! I can't wait to go back to Bakers Bench and try more pastries. The two that we got were delicious. It's hard to believe they're vegan too. The furikake croissant is delicious and so different than I expected. I loved how it was salty but light. The banana black sesame pastry was also delicious too. They even had a gf option! The courtyard where bakers bench is located is so cute. There's parking on the nearby streets and it can get quite busy. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating.

I doubt that I ever become vegan. But I'm am willing to try vegan pastries as long as they're good. Bakers Bench has been around for some time since the Covid days. I remember visiting Far East Plaza where they were selling their baked goods in a kiosk next to Howlin Rays. Great to see some growth and BB moving into a storefront located in an interesting venue amongst craftsman quadruplex property with an extensive patio courtyard and gardens between buildings. BB is located in the back entry of Cassell's Hamburgers. So, I've been to BB a few times and always wanting to get wow'd. The owner and bakers here have some high street cred having come from some Michelin star restaurants. I haven't been wow'd to this day and recent been more like... Blahhh. My recent experience here, one of the items I had is a pain suisse which is similar to that of a croissant but a bit flatter with pastry cream and chocolate chips. The version here was a bit lackluster looking that didn't have the typical cross lamination. It's dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon. It was also missing maple cream and lacked chocolate chips. It's $7 and I'm expecting a product that's executed well (like at Republique or Friend's & Family). The one good thing I'd say here is that the pastry and cookies that I've had here are of very good quality. I could taste the good quality flour and butter they use. Not sure if I'll be back. I do have my go to bakeries I prefer. The service here is friendly and warm. Parking isn't too bad as the location is tucked within the West Chinatown area just south of Dodger Stadium on the west side of I-110 Fwy.

Such a hidden gem! Parking: I came on a Saturday around 10 AM and had no problem parking on alpine street. I can see why it might be harder on a weekday though. Yuzu Poppyseed Scone: this was solid. I do wish it was a bit softer though. Egg roll croissant: awesome. I would feet it again. The croissant itself was delicious. Focaccia sandwich: the bread was great and was balanced with the rest of the ingredients The staff was very helpful and patient with us as we had a lot of questions. Service was super speedy. There's no indoor seating, so it can get chilly outside. I'll be coming back to try their plain croissant!

Beware of parallel street parking, tolerable on the week days. Not too sure about weekend many parked cars might be residences near by. For reference; on Alpine St. 1 hour parking from 8am-6pm except Sundays. For Centennial St. Street sweeping (No Parking) is from 9-11am Thurs on one side and Friday on the other side. Cash preferred, when you pay with cash you pay the price tag of their pastries flat without additional tax. "CASH DISCOUNT- As an incentive to our customers we now offer a discount to pay with cash by providing a 4% immediate discount." Black Sesame Cookie -the texture wasn't my favorite. Outside did have a crisp and inside was chewy but overall it's pretty sticky almost like a cross of soft caramel and toffee.. Black sesame flavor shines through as there were whole sesame throughout the cookie. A little too sweet for my liking. Yuzu Poppy Seed Scone -perfect scone; crisp but not too dense, inside wasn't too dry. Yuzu flavor very prominent. Egg Roll Croissant -eggroll filling was just as you imagined it to taste like but inside a croissant. Furikake Croissant -fruikake flakes on the outside was great and you really taste it. But I'm not sure if fruikake should be baked in high temperatures it gave an aftertaste of burnt popcorn. Croissant texture was crispy outside and soft fluffy inside. Passion Fruit Danish -was my least favorite. Not enough passion fruit jam and danish was too crispy that it was crunchy.

Awesome bakery in an area with a few shops. They have good pastries and they had a unique tote bag with Hello Kitty on it. Staff was welcoming and made some good recommendations.

I stopped by Baker's Bench and was so grateful for how helpful the employee was. She recommended the tomato danish and let me tell you--it was phenomenal. Flaky, buttery, and perfectly buttery with a savory tomato filling. You can tell everything here is baked with care and love. On top of the great pastry, the service made the experience stand out. It felt like they genuinely wanted me to enjoy the best of what they offer. I'll definitely be back to try more of their recommendations (and probably another tomato danish because...wow).

Stopped by this cute spot for a quick pick me up for a long day at work. Located on a residential street it's easy to miss. I was able to find it because of Yelp. You have to enter through the courtyard behind Heavy Water coffee. Their drink choices are limited to coffee, iced coffee, and some other type of drink. But there's plenty of pastries to choose from. The sitting area outside is so cute and truly makes you feel like you're not in downtown.

Yuri J.

So cute and tasty! A small bakery in Echo Park, sharing a space with Heavy Water coffee shop. All the pastries looked divine , lots of option for sweet and savory lovers - the furikake croissants and black sesame cookie were recommended and I'm so glad I chose both. I loved that the pastries are vegan, the croissants were flaky and savory - it's not overwhelming or lathered with butter like most croissants. The black sesame cookie is not too sweet and so nutty! There's a cute outdoor space outside to enjoy your treats.

Baker's bench is such a gem. I've heard so much about it from my friend in LA that I had to check it out when I visited. If you come early, the case is stacked with all kinds of goodies. I could have easily bought one of everything and not regretted it, but I went with a blueberry streusel muffin and chocolate croissant (for later). My partner got a furikake(?!) croissant. The blueberry was really quite excellent--nice moist and substantial filling on the inside. Even though we had the croissants the next day, they too were very good. The person behind the counter seemed genuinely very grateful that we came by, which is a nice demeanor that you don't encounter at all places. While the space inside is quite small, there's plenty of room outside to enjoy your treats.

Big shoutout to Jin Y. for introducing me to Bakers Bench because OMG this place is SOOOOO GOOOOOOD!!!!! And everything is vegan! Including the croissants! :) She brought me here on a Monday afternoon. Sadly they ran out of croissants which is the reason Jin wanted to bring me here in the first place. But I was happy just to buy a couple of cookies. I bought a Black Sesame Cookie for me and a Double Chocolate Espresso Cookie to bring home for Hubby. Both were good! Chewy texture, not too sweet, and great flavor! https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/bakers-bench-los-angeles-2?select=-ViaknbgKUmAWpNvgjSfxw Jin also gave me a Sesame Pineapple Muffin to take home. Again, great nutty flavor and just enough sweetness from the fruity taste. https://bit.ly/3Fla8Ri Five days later, Jin being the most awesome friend that she is, brings me a box full of croissants from Bakers Bench. Oh wow, I treated myself to eat so many delicious carbs that weekend! The box included: - Plain croissants https://bit.ly/4hmHE6T - Furikake croissant https://bit.ly/3R55rxr - Onion croissant https://bit.ly/3QWsn1Y - Chocolate croissants https://bit.ly/4ihy0Ur Every single item in that box had me doing a happy dance! Soft, flaky, "buttery", yum! The furikake one is a little on the salty side but it paired well with an "eggless" tofu salad that I made at home. The plain croissants also are great to use for sandwiches. This place is worth a stop if ever in the area. But go early before they run out of vegan croissants. But please leave some for me :)

Um, what?! How is this vegan?! Whatever meat alternative they used, the texture was perfect. Also amazing seasonings and sauces. It was packed with flavor and lots of veggies. And it was super filling, too! I also grabbed a coconut water cause I need my electrolytes. I took my meal to-go, but kind of regretted it because the inside is so cute! Retro diner chic. The calamari is one of my favorites and my very anti-vegan stepkids actually said it's better than real calamari, which is huge. Chef Tal Ronnen is amazing at making a vegan dinner not feel like a vegan dinner, but instead a decadent filling meal that's comparable to any Italian restaurant. One of my other favorite things about Crossroads is how friendly the staff is. The hostess, Miriam, not only remembers my name but she seems to have a warm and familiar rapport with all the guests that come in. My husband and I love to sit at the bar and Matt the bartender is a blast to talk to. I can't believe it's been 12 years--and I'm so happy to say it was every bit as incredible as I remembered. My friend and I came for lunch. I ordered the vegetable pho, and she had the curry rice. Both dishes were absolutely delicious--fresh, flavorful, comforting, and beautifully prepared. Honestly, I wish we had more time because we had another appointment downtown. I would have loved to try more dishes and definitely dessert! Our server was wonderful--friendly, attentive, and incredibly professional. He checked on us at just the right moments without ever feeling intrusive. The service was as impressive as the food. The restaurant has such a warm, relaxing atmosphere. I especially loved the beautiful ceramic water cups with bird designs--they were so unique and charming. Even the water tasted wonderful! I'm thrilled that Au Lac is still thriving after all these years. If anything, the food tasted even better than I remembered. I certainly won't wait another 12 years before coming back. In fact, I was so impressed that I convinced my husband to come with me next Saturday for dinner! I've tried many vegan restaurants over the years, and Au Lac remains my absolute favorite. My favorite on the Westside is Variable Café, but if you're willing to drive a little farther, Au Lac is on another level. I can't recommend this restaurant highly enough. She said the house salad was better the last time she came bc the lettuce was different. She recalled it was Romaine lettuce last time. This time it was a green salad. I had the lemongrass fish which was made of soybean. It was a little too dry and rubbery for me. I kept putting it in my soup with rice to make it taste better, but ran out of soup. I won't be ordering this dish again. I took half home, cut up the soybean fish and added it to a stew. I didn't mention to my server that it was my bday, but was disappointed that he didn't even offer like regular servers do, "Would you like to see the dessert menu?" I didn't tell him it was my bday nor did I ask for the dessert menu bc I wasn't the one paying the bill. Not that I needed dessert, but it would've been nice to have been asked. When I mentioned this to another server who came by to clear our table that our server didn't even ask if we wanted dessert and that the restaurant doesn't seem to want to push its desserts, he quickly brought us a dessert menu, but my friend was already paying our bill - too late! It would've been nice to be asked earlier. I even had candles in my bag just in case we got dessert. Anyway, this server said he'll tell our server about not offering dessert. The next day I came back with another friend after a Music Center event. My server from the day before recognized me. This time he asked us at the start before we ordered or after we had just ordered whether we'd like to see the dessert menu. Huh? Ask at the END not start of a meal! Instead of embarrassing him, I told him, "No, thanks. My bday was yesterday." On this second day, my friend and I shared a Chinoise salad (delicious and refreshing!) and paella (not like a paella, a little too wet and granular for our taste, but healthy - a living food dish). We had mint and lemon water for both meals. $12 parking in the adjacent structure. Free parking passes at the Music Center if you're a season ticket holder or good luck with finding street parking. I'd still continue to occasionally patronize this restaurant when I have Music Center events bc I want to support veganism, the restaurant; however, I was disappointed with some of the food and waitstaff this weekend. I'd suggest that the waitstaff go thru customer training on when/what/how to talk to customers. He's vegan, and I'm currently following a plant based diet, so it seemed like a perfect fit. We actually found the restaurant after looking on the app InKind (highly recommend btw!), specifically for places with vegan food. They have a parking lot on the side of the building. Not many spaces but grateful for the option! They have seating outside and inside, and I guess inside is both "restaurant" or "dining room." Not sure the difference, but we sat at a table close to the window which was nice. The inside decor is really cute. Beautiful string lights, cookware on the walls, and there was even an old movie playing on a projector. It felt pretty authentic and adorable. Servers were very attentive. We had Adi and he was really sweet. We were brought water right away. And they serve fresh vegan focaccia bread with a DELICIOUS pesto sauce before your meal. Honestly, that pesto is something I want to take home and drink. So good. We decided to both order from the vegan menu. When else can you get fresh vegan Italian?! We got their version of vegan carpaccio as an appetizer. Which was oddly turkey based? (Vegan of course). But truly one of the most unexpectedly yummy things I've had in awhile. The mayo type sauce on it was delicious. The lettuce and capers were a great touch. And it had some sort of mustard stuffed olives that I could eat forever. My fiancé got the lasagna as a main. And I got the pesto spaghetti. Ironically I ended up liking the lasagna more and he liked the spaghetti so we swapped haha. Both were delicious. As someone who isn't vegan and loves meat and cheese, I can confidently say that lasagna was one of the best I've had in so long. At the end they treated him to a delicious small vegan ganache cake and a birthday candle. It was simple and appreciated. The only negatives I have is that the wine was pretty pricey for the bottles they had. And even though I requested a booth (they had several open), and mentioned the birthday in the reservation, I had to repeatedly mention the birthday, and we got seated at a table. It was a Saturday night and I had a friend was in town visiting from the East Coast. We were all…read morehungry and decided to order some takeout for dinner and Maciel's Plant-Based Butcher Shop was the place the group chose. I've only been to one other vegan butcher shop in my life (Las Vegas) and I did not like it one bit, but I am really glad I decided to give this place a shot. I'm a sucker for chicken parm sandwiches so when I saw that on the menu I knew it was the best bet to fill me up and make me happy. I ended up ordering that as well as some french fries on the side and it was a decision that I would absolutely not regret. My friend and I drove to pick the food up and by the time we got back, the food was still pretty hot and ready to eat. The chicken parm sandwich itself was hands down one of the best chicken parm sandwiches I have ever had, vegan or not vegan. The "chicken" inside tasted so good, so shoutout to the breading, cheese, and sauce mixed in because this thing was absolutely fantastic. The french fries on the side were very good as well, nothing to really talk about regarding them, but good fries are good fries. Overall, I had a fantastic experience at Maciel's Plant-Based Butcher Shop and can't wait to come back again. The food here was so dang good and even though it took me a few weeks to write this review, it's making me want to go back ASAP. Come check this place out yourself!

My dining companions loved their sandwiches as well. Business is booming; we visited for a weekday lunch and orders were flying out the door. Service was a tiny bit slow, as the restaurant was so busy; but it's also a good sign that everything was fresh. I'm only a part-time vegan but even if I were a complete carnivore, I'd visit again. It's that delicious! Casual indoor/outdoor dining. Small parking lot and street parking available.
