By far our favorite stop during two days in Custer. I have a feeling a diner's experience here will depend largely on who you draw as a waitress- and we got a pretty good one. I noticed one of the others didn't seem near as friendly as ours. The food was really solid. We stopped for breakfast one day, and lunch the next. And we picked up some pastries for the drive as we were leaving town. Everything we had was very good. Huge portions, and all fairly priced. This is one of the other places we tried during our trip to Mt Rushmore. We had actually intended to try another place close by for lunch (only to discover they were closed for lunch after 2pm). This place was close by so we decided to try. Lunch was solid and well done. Burgers and sandwiches had fresh baked buns. Our kids got the chicken strip kids meals. They seemed to be made fresh (not some defrosted pre-made strips that I was expecting). We also tried their fresh made donuts. I saw some other reviews about the service here. I thought they were ok. But what was even more disappointing was the Atmosphere and the Service. The two were related, but let me start with the more problematic--the Service. Whomever was running the show was not welcoming at all, in fact, I saw some quite rude comments to some patrons who wanted to purchase some pastries to go. I suspect that the real problem was the number of staff, there were too many patrons and not enough service. Our waitress had no time to be pleasant and I do not blame her, it was rush, rush, rush. And there was clearly a vibe of "finish what you are eating, gulp your coffee, and get out" because of the line of lemmings . . . I mean customers waiting for a seat. Which leads me to the Atmosphere, which was . . . how shall I put this, not clean. The pit bathrooms at nearby Custer State Park were better. I think that the Baker's Bakery & Cafe is likely a victim of its own success, clearly they need at least 5 more tables, two more servers, at least one dedicated clean-up person, and a much better layout and design. read more

Baker's is the place. It is impossible to miss, well situated on Mt Rushmore Road in the heart of the Black Hills' most charming community. Breakfast options will suit any Pavlovian, and the homemade cinnamon rolls are delicious. You can expect it to be busy on the weekends, and the servers are racing around to meet the demand. Yet the food comes out fast and hot and the staff is always in great spirits. Everyone has a mile-high sense of humor! The atmosphere is always fun and relaxed and you'll forever be rewarded for liking coffee. Went there due to many recommendations from other travelers like my wife and me. Both of us had the Western Omelet and we both enjoyed it. Hot omelet and hash browns. I personally would have liked them a bit crisper but still they were good. Coffee was fresh and hot. Service was very good but one thing I felt the workers were rushing. My hippy days I would say cut down on the speed. I did not feel rushed or neglected just calm down a bit. We purchased a apple fritter cinnamon bun and cherry turnover. To me the cinnamon bun was a tad sweet but I say that to anything frosted but my wife loved it. I really enjoyed the cherry turnover. As to fritter I will munch that later tonight. I've only been here a couple times with some friends of mine. And the service is very very poor. And the food is microwaved as we all watched the cook microwave it. They close at four. Visited twice while in town. All the food came out prompt and hot. Our waiter was great and very tentative even though they were understaffed. Always kept our coffee cups filled. The donuts were good, a little less 'fluffy' then most donut stores but they were still very tasty. Both were so good that kids ate their breakfast and most of mine both mornings. The donuts are excellent according to my kids. The caramel roll is a must! Trying to be optimistic after reading some pretty negative reviews, I entered this place with medium expectations. The staff were nice, but I wouldn't say friendly. They did their jobs but didn't strive for anything beyond average. I ordered the breakfast burrito and asked for extra veggies added inside. The burrito arrived with not only no extra veggies but also the salsa that was already supposed to be inside it wasn't there. Even still, the burrito was tasty and filling. Pretty good little place given where it is located. It is hard to rate the service since it was very slow, but will give the benefit of the doubt that it was due to the onslaught of bikers that day.
