We came in on Father's Day morning and being the only breakfast place in town, they were slammed. However, considering how small the place is, no one had to wait more than 10 min, including two large groups of 7-10. The hostess and waitress were super nice given how incredibly busy they were. Our food was out in less than 15 min, and it was all delicious. They make all of their own bread and pastries and it's all wonderful. The prices were very reasonable as well. They also have a counter service bakery which seemed to be consistently busy as well, but moving quickly. Definitely one of the best restaurant experiences we had while staying in the Hill City area. read more

We stopped in for breakfast on our way to Crazy Horse. It was SUPER crowded, but the wait was not too bad and interestingly enough the waitress asked how long we actually waited so she could tell those coming in. I thought that was kind of cool. Had the Denver 'scramble' which was served with a layer of scrambled eggs in an omellete type manner on top of the 'guts'. Odd. But tasty! I just mixed it all up myself and ate it! Not sure they make their potatoes from scratch, but when mixed with the rest of the ingredients they were not too bad. Coffee was so so, but the service was great! Better than a hotel breakfast. This was our breakfast spot this morning to start day 3 of this years Rooster Run. I had the classic breakfast with sunny side up eggs and bacon with hashbrowns. The eggs were cooked perfect, sometimes getting good sunny side up eggs can be a challenge. A lot of times the yolk is over cooked but these were perfect. The hashbrowns were crispy and quite good. If I had any complaints at all it would be the 2 pieces of bacon. They were cooked good but come on, who does 2 pieces of bacon. That's just a taste. As for everyone elses breakfast most thought it was great. About the only complaint was the breakfast burrito, the hashbrowns were to crispy and the salsa verde overpowered it. Think you've had the best breakfast in the world? If you've been to Baker's, then you have. First off, the wait staff is awesome. Very friendly and personable. But the food? Oh, heavens. He got the big burrito breakfast and said it's the best he's ever had. And we're from Texas! It was giant. I had the classic with eggs, bacon, hash browns...delish. The homemade bread is to die for. Do not leave without a donut or cinnamon roll. Definitely NOT your typical donut shop items. I can't describe it, but they are SO much better than any I've ever had. I could go on and on but then you'd still be reading instead of ordering a heavenly mocha and trying to decide what to get off the menu. (BTW...we went two mornings out of three while in Custer. I was out in the Black Hills on vacation and had read that Baker's Bakery is a good place to stop for lunch. So I did. I don't know what they're talking about but this place isn't all that. In 1 word, "blah". The service was slow. I don't think it's the waitress' fault bc they had her servicing a boatload of tables. So the wait was a while. Then the wait for the food took a long time too. The bison burger was over cooked, maybe it sat under the heat lamp for a long time. I didn't care for it. There was a table of 6 motorcycle people. They were there before I got there and only got their burgers when I was paying the bill. I gave them props for sticking it out and not leaving. Hopefully, their food was better than mine. read more

Right off the main downtown shopping strip of Custer (Mt Rushmore Rd/16/89), you'll come across "The Bakery" as locals call it. Baker's Bakery (to be more specific) is where all the locals come to read their mornin' paper. One older male in particular waits til one of the others finish their coffee and leave to steal the paper without having to purchase his own---that would be me when I'm older. On the other end of the 'age spectrum,' the kids come to drool over the humongous pastries thankful protected behind the display case glass. It's difficult to hold back after a filling breakfast to not purchase one of their cinnamon rolls that are as big as my head, or one of their freshly glazed donuts with chocolate, vanilla or butterscotch frosting. But my BIG recommendation is not to ponder the thought of treating yourself to a treat for too long because they may be gone before you know it. At least that's what happened to me!! Donuts seem to be "the thing" in South Dakota and thank God I didn't see one Dunkin' Donuts but instead places like Baker's. As for their breakfasts, every dish comes on or with two slices of their thick, fresh, homemade bread that is not to be missed. Unlike the donuts, they bake enough to spare you from being without bread. Ate at this establishment yesterday 06/03/12 and was extremely disappointed with the experience. Customer service was extremely poor and the staff seemed to only know how to communicate by yelling at each other. Made for a less then relaxing experience. I ordered lunch, steak wrap and chicken tortilla soup. The wrap wasn't bad but the "pico" was nothing more then LARGE chunks of onion, under ripe tomatoes, and white onion. Very overwheling and ruined the wrap. The soup was the worst part of the dish. It was sour (think of lemon juice) and the veggies were again LARGE chunks of tomato and onion. We did not recieve any service after our food was ordered and NO refills were given (which we only had water at the whole table) though she walked through our dinning area multiple times. The manager (or maybe she was the owner) is extremely loud and quite rude to her staff which made it a little uncomfortable at the front counter. Overall I will not be going back to Custer Bakery every again. I would rather do what the animals do and eat some grass next time I'm in Custer read more

We were in the area during the Sturgis rally, so things were busy. Even though we were prepared to wait, we were seated within 5 minutes. Good, regular, down home breakfast food, served fast and cooked right. The staff was super pleasant. We didn't sample any of the bakery items, but they looked fantastic- pecan caramel rolls as big as your face, enormous frosted cinnamon buns, donuts, danish, strudel. The homemade rolls they use on the breakfast sandwiches are BANGIN', and the sandwiches themselves are large. They certainly don't skimp on the portions! We grabbed our breakfast order to-go -- 3 breakfast sandwiches, a regular breakfast plate, and four mini cinnamon rolls. The sandwiches were fantastic, as I've already stated, but the mini-cinnis were pretty dry... I only ate half of one because of that. The service was good to begin with, when there wasn't a line, but as soon as the place started to see an influx of more customers, the service got snippy and a little sloppy. We had to run back in because they didn't give us silverware with our to-go order, and when my husband approached one of the gals behind the counter to ask where we could grab some, she, assuming he was trying to order, snapped at my husband with a sharply toned "sir, you're going to have to wait." It was a less than welcoming interaction that could have been altogether avoided had they just put utensils in our bag to begin with. read more

Sometimes plans go a little awry, but the alternative ends up being better. Arriving in Custer to find the place we'd planned to eat closed for the season, we looked around for another open cafe. Their pinup girl was visible from across the street, so we ambled over for breakfast. Good sign: the place was doing a rousing business at 7am. South Dakotans love their pastries, and the display cases were full of donuts, rolls, etc. to tempt (the pinup girl is obviously there to get you close enough to smell the goodies). We sat in the near-back of the long space. In addition to sweet treats, Baker's does a full menu of traditional breakfast items. I got a Denver omelet with green chile sauce on the side. I'd come back here just to have that chile sauce! Spouse had an omelet and both of us dug the black bread that came with our plates. Service was great, even though they were busy and getting more so. If you want items to go, be sure to order them before your check comes. The register is close to the front, and the service area is further back - no one to ring you up up front. Wanted to go here because of all the great reviews....pulled up and read the sign. This place is only open seasonally.....we were totally bummed! Doesn't open until March 1st. The lady (maybe the owner) came out just because she saw us sitting there for a minute probably with pouty faces, and just let us know they were closed in case we were waiting for them, we were just simply looking for another place in town to eat breakfast but thought that was a nice gesture.
