If I based this review on food alone, it would be 4 stars. The biscuits and gravy were delicious. Hot fresh biscuits, and well seasoned gravy that wasn't too greasy. The service, on the other hand, wasn't just slow...it was terrible. There were 4 of us for breakfast, and our waitress brought 5 breakfasts out, and said: tell me which ones are yours. Our waiter was attentive and provided good service. We enjoyed the baked goods (had 3 varieties between 2 of us over 2 days). The meals were mediocre, though. The worst was my husbands burger. On my first visit, I had a buffalo burger & fries. Food was good, but the burger was overdone and a little dry. Fries were beer-battered goodness and the homemade bun was the best part of the meal. On my second visit, I just wanted to get my to-go mug filled with coffee. It took 10 minutes. I was the only person standing at the counter and every single waitress (3? 4?) walked by, smiled, and kept walking. It wasn't very busy in there (tables were about half full), but everyone apparently had something else to do. And after all that, the coffee tasted very burnt and was over $2 for a 12 oz cup! I think their specialty is bread and sweet treats, so maybe I'll give it another try before I leave town. Also, no wifi. Very sad. read more

Okay food. Limited breakfast menu. Nothing to write home about. Lukewarm pancakes. They were out of bacon! How does a breakfast diner run out of bacon? They were also out of most of their donuts. They had one sweet roll in the case and it looked flat and like a solid sugar square. My recommendation is skip this place and go down the road to the Purple Pie. read more

Stayed in Custer and read reviews for all the different places. Stopped by after a hike mid-afternoon. The food was good but not great. I had the Buffalo burger which was dry. We bought a few bakery items on the way out. Cookies were good but not spectacular. Overall a good experience, but we didn't find it 5-star worthy. read more

Amazing atmosphere! The owner will sit down, hang out and talk with you for a bit! They can get a bit busy and they don't allow for substitutions during the summer but overall awesome! I not only enjoy working at this place but I love the food too! Cherish (the owner) works beside her employees to make this place run smoothly and you can tell she takes pride in her restaurant! Did I mention how awesome the donuts are? Must try! But get there early cause they go quick! read more

This place was recommended for good coffee and donuts and that was our reason for the visit. The coffee was definitely a 2 star and tasted more like Folgers or Tasters Choice. The donuts were good and we got glazed and it was fluffy and tasty. read more

What a great find in this small town. Bakery in front that had a huge assortment to choose from. Due to the rally, it was pretty busy, but we were seated quickly and had excellent service. She had a garden burger and I went for the special "Mike's" burger. Both were very good and came with plenty of fries. This is one you shouldn't miss. read more

There are a lot of good food choices in Custer. This is my favorite by far. During our trip to the Black Hills, we ate breakfast there 3 times and lunch once. The green chili salsa on the breakfast burrito is fantastic and the breakfast sandwich is one of my favorite breakfast sandwiches ever because of their homemade buns. Sorry this post is a little long but it's a story I think should be told. After reading several good reviews for Bakers Bakery & Café we decided to try it as we were leaving South Dakota. So on the morning of Friday September 27, 2019 we made a point of stopping there. After waiting a couple of minutes we were seated. Moments later our server (Lauren) came over. Ready to take our order we told her we wanted coffee but hadn't had time to look at the menu yet. She said she'd get the coffee. After she brought coffee I told my wife she acts irritated as if we're a thorn in her side. When Lauren returned we placed our order. 1, bacon, eggs, hash browns w/sourdough toast and 1, sausage, eggs, hash browns w/sourdough toast. We also requested the toast be buttered edge to edge while it was hot, so the toast didn't turn into croutons. This didn't seem like too outlandish a request. When the food arrived I found the toast had been half way buttered with what I presume was the griddle oil used in the kitchen so I asked for some butter. Lauren brought two packets of "Land o' Lakes Buttery Flavored Spread." While I was applying this undesirable spread it occurred to me that this is a bakery. So I asked a different server if they had real butter. That got Laurens attention; she came and asked what was wrong. The other server told her and Lauren got real butter from the refrigerator and put it on the table. Before I could ask to have the toast remade Lauren said that butter was not used in the kitchen anyway. I never got a chance to ask for a toast remake because that was when Lauren got a hostile attitude and declared "we had been a PAIN since we arrived there." She followed that with the threat that she'd have her cousin "throw us out." My wife said she'd like to see the manager, Lauren said I am the manager. Lauren said we should just leave at which time we said we would. We also informed her we wouldn't be paying for anything either. After all, the food had just arrived at the table we hadn't eaten yet. That was when we left. It seems to me for a business that relies on customers coming through the door they sure have a strange way of treating customers that haven't really caused a problem. I don't think I saw any employees that actually had a good attitude. If the self identified manager, Lauren, has the nerve to tell customers they've been a "pain" ever since they arrived then maybe ownership (relative or not) needs to rethink their choice for manager. Especially when the customer hasn't made any particularly troublesome requests. We certainly won't go back and will make a point to dissuade everyone we know from going there. We were very disappointed in our breakfast. My pancake was cold in the middle & tasted like something frozen I'd buy at the grocery store. Both of our eggs were rubbery & cold. They were NOT actual eggs, they tasted like a continental breakfast at a motel. My sons pork chops were definitely dry & his has browns tasted from a frozen package & oily. We each had decaf coffee that was old & weak. We were each charged for a glass of water. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. Our bill was over $30 & we left very hungry. read more

It truly is as good as it gets and more! Your quaint main street bakery and cafe that provides awesome customer service and serves quality food! It is clear that the owner's expectations are not short of preparing quality meals, pastries and rolls and providing the best customer service possible. Our wait staff was awesome (Thanks Trevor!). Fast and efficient service while being continually responsive and very courteous and friendly. Watching other wait staff you could see them all moving and being very friendly. One of the 'regular patrons' was eating breakfast next to us and she told my wife that the owner's daughters worked there ... you could see her hustling while bussing tables. People sitting next to us had the breakfast burrito ... my word, it was huge and it looked good! For the four of us, my oldest son had the western omelette with homemade wheat bread; it was terrific. The rest of us had the classic breakfast ... eggs, bacon, hash browns and homemade bread. I had the rye bread, omg it was probably the best rye that I have ever eaten! My wife got the sour dough bread and loved it! The food was fantastic and you definitely don't go away hungry, the portions are not skimpy! As you walk in the front door they have all their baked goods, pastries, donuts, rolls etc. The caramel rolls and sweet rolls are probably 6 inches in diameter. I went back the next morning and got 2 sweet rolls and 2 caramels rolls for takeout. They were delicious! Definitely worth the stop. Their logo and marketing statement is "You'll Love our Buns!" Boy you are not kidding! I even bought one of their coffee mugs because they were that good! We will definitely go back to Baker's Bakery & Cafe! read more

Hubby and I came here almost every day during our vacation in the Black Hills. All we ever got were iced lattes to go, but they were very good. Service was prompt and friendly, and everyone who made us a latte did a great job. It's not easy finding coffee worth drinking, but we were very happy with Baker's Bakery! What a great find! We stayed at Keystone, during a visit to Rushmore, and travelled to Custer before visiting the Crazy Horse Memorial. Service was exceptional (we had a lovely and very hard-working waitress, Donale)! The food was great. My kids loved the perfectly cooked eggs, and my son loved the home-made caramel walnut pastry. My egg sandwich was delicious--made so by the homemade sourdough bread and perfect eggs and ham. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars was the decor, which was still perfect for a breakfast joint. Terrible service! My fiancee and I went there this morning to grab a quick coffee and donut breakfast before going to Jewel Cave and most of the staff made us feel like we were asking for them to move the world. We are from MD so never been to this part of the country before and were excited at the pastry display. The manager barked at us if we were dining in or carrying out. We had time, so figured we'd eat there. A very nice male server seated us in the back of the cafe - past the kitchen, restrooms, and several empty booths - where we sat stunned for several minutes. We said we just wanted some baked items and he told us those were only for to-go (which was fine). The manager was trying to get past my fiancee and we apologized for being in her way. She said nothing and rolled her eyes. An older couple (seemed like locals) came in and were greeted nicely and seated in the front of the cafe. When we purchased our donuts and coffee, the counter girl had a sour expression on her face despite us being polite and trying to make friendly conversation. The key to all of this is we are an interracial couple (I'm black, she's white). Even though black and Asian staff worked at the cafe, we did not feel welcome and wondered if "We" were the reason. South Dakota has mostly friendly people, but not at this place! Ironically, they have an "All Lives Matter" sign prominently on their door.
