Stopped for dinner, menu looked decent for a quick dinner. Once there, we were told that they no longer serve food. They need to update their website. We stayed and had a couple drinks for happy hour. The original bartender had left, when we cashed out, we were charged full price. The next shift bartender said she was not told that we bought our drinks during HH and had to charge us full price. Not good business. read more

After hiking all day, we needed a margarita. This place is on the drag and open and serves more than beer and wine. The bartender was excellent. She made us great margs, not too sweet. Lots of beautiful dead animals on the walls. Nice bar. They also have food. read more

Went in to have a steak dinner and couldn't even get a beer! We sat there for 25 minutes then left. It was very disappointing.

Sadly this was not a good first meal for us as we arrived into town. The bbq ribs were tough and chewy. Steak was somehow chewy. Both as entree and on the steak sandwich. The steak on the sandwich actually had a strange off taste to it. Loaded baked potatoes barely had any toppings and they looked like they had been microwaved a couple minutes but still hard. The waiter was struggling to understand English and accidentally entered a wrong order but I am sure that will improve in time. We were seated at the back of calamity Jane area because our teenage sons are not yet 21. Ambience would have been better on the saloon side. ... On the plus side, we liked the cheese curds although they are fairly garlicky. read more

Definitely better food than the majority of restaurants and bars in the Black Hills area. However, be mindful of visiting during holidays or busy times. We ate here on the 4th of July. It was packed inside, but plenty of outdoor seating. The only issue was that our food was ice cold when it arrived, and it was very expensive for what it was. Seemed clear that the staff were unequipped or not able to handle that amount of people (my guess 25 people total inside). I'm not planning a trip to the Black Hills again any time soon, but if you're there maybe try visiting for lunch or a weekday. read more

Standard bar food, we opted to split a pollock fish sandwich. It exceeded expectations and half each with a plate of tomatoes instead of potatoes held us until dinner. The service was great. Jim was super attentive and nice and made our Tito and club soda with a spash of cran, just as they should be, asked for a short glass instead of a tall one full of ice and he obliged no problem. The decor has lots of animal heads and a buffalo with a pair of jeans on one of his horns. You get the picture! read more

I work in customer service. I know the demands, the everything. Someone prepaid two drinks on their tab and explained to the bartender very clearly. They went to close their tab and said I was charged for the two drinks but they have only drank one. The other bartender "didn't understand " and instead of helping took the ticket and moved on to another customer. Ok fine the other drink that was bought for me no big deal I don't need it. BUT we sat there patiently waiting at the bar for 26 minutes to close our tab. Ignored by 3 bartenders. Yes they were busy it's GOLD DISCOVERY DAYS. I 100% get it but then a coworker of theirs comes in at the end of the bar and was taken care of immediately before us. I have never wanted to walk out on a tab so much before in my life . We were not checked on sitting at the bar and when we asked the "bar back" a question we were directed towards the staff that clearly seen us and took other customers. I don't know his name but can find out. Disappointed for being a local . When we first got there it was 15 minutes or more to be greeted as they seen us and instead of a "we will be right with you, a just a moment, any acknowledgement " it was a cold shoulder. There were 8 people in there when we first came in with 2 bartenders. I hate to be this person but like I said I am in the same field and communication busy or not with the customers goes along way. Gold Pan Saloon is one of the more recently opened venues along Mount Rushmore Road, in Custer, SD. We stopped in for a refreshment; and, by that I mean my two friends settled in for a drink or two. Me? I"m not drinking so much. With the liquor laws in SD such that they are, it's amazing this place has a full bar. But, my friends were relieved as we'd stopped in more than 1 place only to be disappointed that they served only beer and wine. The staff was friendly enough; and, I was pleased as punch to help the "interim" chef light the outdoor grill, to cook up some buffalo brats. However, the drink prices were high. Despite my 3 star review, the Gold Pan is my favorite bar in Custer. I do not visit the Hills without visiting the Gold Pan at least once. So why the 3 stars? The Gold Pan is a local's bar. Tourists are not going to walk in and be wowed or made to feel special. That's exactly how I like the Gold Pan. They pour a strong drink. The bar tenders are nice. There's a jukebox and sometimes live music. The outdoor seating is relaxing. This is a bar, bar. No bells, whistles, or fancy frills. Do not walk into the Gold Pan and expect it to be something it's not. Just enjoy it's small town local charm. read more

Left this place physically shaking because of my experience. To begin, we walked into the Golden Pan Saloon, which is a mix of an old bikers bar and a hunter trophy room hoping to grab one of their buffalo burgers (since a lot of the other places were full, now I understand why). When a waitress, who seemed nice enough let us pick a table. It all began when we waited around 10-15 minutes for our server to come and even speak to us. We were one of maybe four tables in the whole establishment, with two of them already being served. Finally our waitress came over and we ordered our food and drinks. (There were some communication issues with our server). So after we ordered this is where the real ish began. Three other tables came in after us, all being sat, served, and treated immediately as they walked in. After this we were waiting thirty minutes for our burgers when two burgers came out of the kitchen only to have the server pass us and deliver them to the first table that came in after us.. we tried not to make too big of deal of it and waited another fifteen minutes only for the exact same thing to happen to the SECOND group that came in after us. We began to get a bit annoyed when finally the third set of burgers came out, only to pass our table once more. At this point it had been over an hour for our food and the three tables that came in 15+ minutes after us all had been now served, eaten, AND left by this time. Our server didn't come up to us once to apologize for the delay or ask to refill our drinks. Finally I went to the bar to ask the bartender why our food was taking so long. There was a group of six at the bar that were paying and then just me. Let me reiterate I'm not hard to miss, I'm a 6'2 native woman with green hair. Anyway, I waved to the bartender as she passed only to have her ignore me, I said excuse me miss only to be ignored once more. She had passed by me multiple times during this period without so much as looking at me. I seemed absolutely invisible and genuinely contemplated if this woman was fully blind, until a biker couple came in and within 15 seconds walked over to them asking them what they needed. I was beyond frustrated and finally decided to talk to our waitress. I asked very kindly why it was taking so long and that four tables had been served before us that had shown up much later than us. All she said was "five minutes, sorry." I went back to my table and at this point it's been an hour fifteen/twenty. We were about to get up and leave and say forget it, my friend had far more patience then I did, when I saw the cook a man come out of the kitchen and plop the burgers on the bar without telling anyone and not bringing them to us himself. After that the waitress finally brought us our food and that was that. The burger was subpar and served on paper plates for something pretty expensive. It would have been quicker and easier for me to go out on a buffalo hunt, hunt a buffalo, grow the lettuce, onions, and tomatoes, milk my cow and make cheese, and build my burger that way then this process. Finally, we ate and I had my friend, who is a white male, go up and pay since I didn't want to be there another thirty minutes. Within a couple minutes of being up there the waitress told him to wait while the bartender returned from the back (the woman who originally ignored me) and when she came to the bar everything was paid for and finished within three minutes. Walking out we had no regards or apologies for them making us wait and for being so rude. Anyway, 10/10 would not recommend, I wish I could give this zero stars but yelp is too nice when it comes to ranking. ALSO WE WERE SERVED ON PAPER PLATES AND EVERYONE ELSE HAD BLACK GLASS DINNER PLATES. Wopila tanka for listening. I guess I need to find comfort in the fact that this experience happened two days prior to the Warriors taking down Custer at the Battle of the Greasy Grass. I'm here to say, we are still here and I will not be spending my money in Custer anytime soon. read more

Well you can put lipstick on a pig... you can dress up a building... but when you have a untrained staff and no beers on tap; The more things change the more they stay the same. Wait staff have their family in the bar.. creating a non welcoming atmosphere. This is prime example of business that has spent a lot of money on renovating the bar.. but had not considered that the clientele they cater to can ruin the experience. The place was full of locals that were cursing and yelling at the top of their lungs. Defiantly NOT family friendly!! The large group in the corner had people screaming like hyenas. I personally witnessed customers come in,, have half a drink and leave complaining about the noise. Consider asking your patrons to be polite and considerate of other patrons. Until something changes I will avoid this place like the dentist. read more

I stopped by the Gold Pan Saloon while waiting for my takeout burger over at Black Hills Burger to get done, and it was definitely a good call IMO! It's on the main strip of Custer near the intersection in town where most of the traffic is - it's hard to miss - and easily identifiable by the bench outside the window with 'Oldest Saloon in the Black Hills' stamped on it. You walk through the kind of doors you imagine to be on a saloon (at least based on what I have seen on TV), but once inside, you'll find yourself in a very nicely-appointed bar that pays homage to the region's past (e.g. chandeliers made out of what looked like train gears, and a clock cradled on an antler) but that also has a few TVs with whatever sporting events are on. You can either sit at tables or at the bar; I parked myself at the bar and had a local craft IPA - quite good, and at $4 for a hefty pour, a very good bargain. While you can grab one of the regular macro brews if that's your jam, there is a surprising amount of craft beers on hand - local ones as well as some from further away (e.g. Deschutes from OR or Alaska Brewing, which I had not previously seen in the Lower 48 outside of Washington State). The bartender was a nice fellow, if a little green on tips about the area (he was new in town), but it was an excellent spot to have a casual drink and be in a place that felt authentic without overdoing it for the sake of the tourists passing through. read more

Went here on a mom and dad night while on vacation in Custer. It was a great little bar with a smoking patio out back, had a two person band playing up front and it was a nice little bar and wasn't overly expensive. The lady that was working I ordered a Bloody Mary and by far one of the best I have had! Lips tingled from the spice and it had all the flavors you need in one. With the four drinks we bought out bill was only 18. Would return for sure when we go back out there. read more
