This is not a fancy place, but the 2nd time I have been there. The service was very good this time the menu was limited as the owner said that they had trouble getting staff this year, so it was just his cook and himself this year. The stuffed mushrooms were great, with the best coating I have had in a very long time. It was light and crispy. I ordered the walleye strips, and they had the same great coating and served with a very good tarter sauce. I had a couple Colorado Bulldogs to drink which were also made very well and one of my friends had Margaritas which she said were good as well. Not only that, but I will definitely go back to the Captain's Table if I am in the area again. Great little place! We split a ribeye, which was amazing. We each got a perfect side salad, a small corn on the cob, and dinner roll. We added a smashed potatoe to share. The dining options in Custer are limited. I still would not recommend this restaurant. The prices suggest something moderately upscale at least, and the descriptions sound nice, but the food does not match. The breaded white cheddar cheese curds? Velveeta. The prices on the bill did not match the menu either, and when soft drinks and unexpected surcharges for using a credit card were added, it was as if we had added an additional diner. Our server was nice and efficient, I will say that, but our family of four paid over $100 for a meal that was barely edible. I know that every business is overwhelmed and under staffed, especially in these seasonal towns. However; it is never ok for the manager/ owner to treat the staff he has with disrespect, especially in front of customers. We stopped in to try and get a table on the 4th. Already knew there could be a long wait but the owner came out of the kitchen and yelled at the hostess for seating a table of 4, even though there were several open tables. He then pulled her out of ear shot and obviously continued to chew her ass. She came back up front, obviously upset but trying to keep her composure. She apologized to the party of 4 and told them they needed to wait longer. I completely understand that he was probably short staffed, but there is nothing worse than having customers on a long wait when they can see open tables. Obviously, a novice restauranteur. He could have set the tables, pushed drinks from his large and empty bar while telling the customers that the kitchen was behind. Missed out on some wasp dollars there. Can definitely tell we're away from home. Sad bc we were excited to arrive in SD for first time & support a local restaurant here. Below subpar food that isn't fried or a salad. Some of it didn't taste "right" at all, left majority of food on plates & never once did staff ask "how did it taste?" Praying we don't get food poisoning. Staff was... adequate. But only with 1 person who was helping. The others had very unpleasant interactions with on issues like trying to order something off of the menu, server clearly was clueless on anything menu related & refused to let us order something that was outlined on their menu. We had to patiently explain it 5xs and he finally said "oh they're strict here. They won't let you do that" ... seriously‽! And EVERY time we told one of the staff "we're sharing this", we had to ask for an extra plate and she seemed shocked that people would want an additional plate for appetizers or shared entree. I've worked in restaurant industry for 10+ years and even the most novice of employees I trained never behaved the way staff did. We will NEVER be back, this is our first meal during our stay this week & prices for items were severely inflated for service & poor quality food. Wine & beer may be the only acceptable items offered. We're very easy to please people, it is rare I leave a negative review but I feel I need to warn anyone else coming to this place with average expectations much less good ones. Also only high chair provided for our 1 year old had broken straps & clearly unsafe. If it's deep fat fried, probably has a chance of tasting mildly ok. A genuinely local place for semi-rural South Dakota (Custer). We had just crossed over from Wyoming and the accents were noticeably closer to Minnesota than Wyoming. Interesting. The place looks like one of those bars in a gritty cop drama about the North, more expected in the Northeast. Mare of Easttown? But in the high plains? I guess it's the same, in some ways, northerly. They had grilled tuna steaks this evening. I found it a little dry, but serviceable. The restaurant is very popular--filled up in half an hour from 6pm. Staff is great, friendly and helpful. Everything was ok until we received a replacement salmon that was half the size of what the first one was. This thing was literally the size of a business card. We live in Custer during the last three summers. We've passed by this place untold times and decided to give it a try. Got there around 5:00 and was seated right away. Looked over the menu that had a grilled salmon my wife wanted to try and I decided on the walleye. Well mind you this is a Wednesday afternoon so they should have been well stocked. However no salmon. I asked about the walleye and the waiter says there's two left. Wife wanted a Cesar Salad and I wanted a romaine salad. No romaine. They did have iceberg lettuce. Might as well eat cardboard. Broccoli was the veggie of the day but I asked if they would substitute the rice instead. That would be a NO. So now we know this is not a place we will ever walk back into. We left without ordering. read more

My disappointment is at the max. We got to the restaurant at 6:15 we didn't get our food until after 7:40pm. Prior to our food arriving it's the first time I've seriously considered leaving a place. The food was extremely disappointing. Their prime rib on google reviews looks great. The actual food was tasteless. A bill for 3 people was over $125 for disappointing food was hard to swallow. Our server discounted our bill $32 due to the prime/wait and to them being out of salads. I'm a believe in the idea that going out to eat should be worth the money you spend. This absolutely was not. We went to Custer from a town away and were looking for something new to try. Everywhere was packed and we ended up at this restaurant. We walked in and were immediately greeted and seated. The decor was on par with your typical seafood fare, and we had the option of high top seating which was fun! Our server/bartender Leanna was amazing! She was knowledgeable, and so kind! Our food was wonderful! My husband and I had the Breaded Walleye and it was 2 large portions of the most flavorful fish, and the batter was crisp and lended to the flavor instead of taking away from it. The special of the night was chicken Alfredo, our son ordered that and he said it was fantastic and the Alfredo had a great complimentary garlic hint! Our daughter had a burger and she asked for medium well and it came textbook perfect! It was juicy and flavorful, she normally never finishes a meal and she devoured her burger! While 3 may seem like a good review, I would have preferred to give it a 4. For the amount of money spent and the actual name of the restaurant, we were both let down. First off, the walleye appetizer. We had never tried walleye, and it was fried well and still tasted fresh. My fries were cooked way too unevenly, and my veggies were 3....yes, literally only 3...asparagus spears. The two things my fiancee and I were looking forward to (swordfish and crab risotto, and salmon) are still on their website, as well as their slider trio, but sadly, not on the menu. Take it off the website, then. :p My fiancee's steak was ok, but she said she's had better. Tonight we went in with a group of 14. We got seated immediately and received our menus. The Manager promptly and quite rudely told us they do not split checks for large groups. We were at 3 tables and asked her if she could at least split it by table. We received a rude "you are still one group and no". One of our group went in the back to try and talk with her because everyone in the restaurant was listening and quite shocked she couldn't work with us. He asked politely can you please or we are going to need to leave. She said no and we left. My husband and I came here on a Tuesday night about 5:30pm. We were seated right away and the server seemed attentive at first. 5 minutes into this experience we realized the server, I believe his name is Kenny, cannot handle more than two tables at a time. He was clearly freaking out about people coming in to eat or sit at the bar. A young woman who seemed to be either a server assistant or expeditor, she didn't know the table numbers and Kenny was so rude to her right in front of us. I was so embarrassed for her. My husband did not get his salad before his entree (no big deal) and the server again chastised the expeditor right in front of us. We arrived and were seated promptly. There were about 15 tables in the dining room and three of them had people at them. Every other place we've gone to in town was packed except for here and that should have been our first indicator to this place. The interior looked dingy and dark. We ordered and each ordered a salad which neither of us ever saw. I ordered the seafood pasta which should have been shrimp and scallops. What I got was 3 large shrimp on top and what looked to be shredded crab, which wasn't on the menu. The sauce didn't taste bad however it didn't taste correct either. I wasn't sure about this place because I read some of the previous reviews, and I was a little weary. Me and my husband headed in for a special occasion. We're from Chicago traveling from boulder CO to mt Rushmore and then back home, celebrating an anniversary. I wanted prime rib so we asked some locals and they told us definitely go to the Captains Table. I ordered the larger piece and It was cooked perfectly, the meat was tender, and tasty. This was probably the most disappointed I've ever left a restaurant. We were a party of 10. They were short staffed, we had to wait for a table... I get it...no big deal, we went to the bar side and ordered drinks. We were seated and ordered right away. We ordered ahead of several tables and waited over a hour for our food. The other table in our party (who ordered after us) received their food and we're done eating before we received ours. Me personally I ordered the double cheeseburger. Half way through our table's meal I still hadn't received my meal. They told me that it was dropped on the floor and they were making me a new one. The manager came over and said "don't worry, we will make it right with you". 15 minutes after our table was done with their meal I received mine. When I was finished they told me they would give me 25% off my meal for it being so late. A measly 25%. That is not "making it right" in my estimation. We waited to get our checks, and waited some more. Finally we went to the till and just told them what we had. The bills were all screwed up and it was a nightmare figuring it all out. It was just a horrible way to end what was a great day for our group. Disappointing service, disappointing customer service and disappointing food. I had a couple of complimentary house beers bc I was staying at a hotel nearby that had some sort of deal with the restaurant. I'm not a beer drinker but whatever beer it was, I thought it was pretty tasty. I had gout recently so I couldn't eat meat that nite. So I had some sort of fish for dinner. It was ok. My culinary experiences in the midwest weren't too great, but this place was one of the better dining options in Custer. Me and Dad were staying in Custer as a central location to go check out Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse and all the beautiful National Parks in the area. I'd already struck out twice on restaurants, so I let Dad pick our last meal in Custer. The Captain's Table reminded me a lot of my Grandmother's house in Colorado. She's no longer with us, but it sure looks like a lot of her interior decorating ended up here! Very old school. Warm. Inviting. Kitsch. When we first got there, they sat us in the bar, but it wasn't very comfortable and smelled a little stuffy. They graciously relocated us to a table. The meal started off with some rolls. Just typical grocery store rolls. Not fresh baked or anything. I got a buffalo burger which was pretty good, but could have used a little seasoning. It came with a baked potato that was nicely baked instead of just microwaved like the other places in town. Strangely enough, between courses, they gave us little tiny servings of lemon sorbet. Random! Well, at least for this place it seemed random. Dad got trout which was frozen, but good. He keeps wondering why there's no fresh trout anywhere and I keep wondering why I can't get good red meat in the middle of cattle country? Our waitress was super nice, funny, and attentive.
