I wanted to give them 4 stars, but there were just enough misses to keep it in the middle. It's away from the high traffic on the highway, so no wait. Lots of Americana and kudos to veterans. Service was very good. Bathroom and tables/chairs are clean. Coffee is decent. We ordered a roast beef melt w fries, and a bowl of chili. Both were pretty decent, the fries cooked perfectly, the chili meaty. Here are the misses: the place is old and needs updating. The window sills were pretty dusty. We had to send a coffee mug back because it had something on it. The roast beef melt featured mushrooms, and they were right out of the can - no attempt to brown them. But the kicker is that this is a breakfast/lunch place and they have a hard stop for breakfast at 11. Very sad to those of us who got here at 11:05. Because the breakfast orders that were still coming out looked great. read more

Unfortunately, the family had a member in the hospital and not doing well and it really took a toll on this family business. We were there for nearly 2 hours and we only served drinks and realized that most people didn't have food. The owner was very upset. I clearly heartbroken as her family member was in the hospital. I would definitely go back and give them a second chance, but on this particular day, there's absolutely no communication to anyone there and people begin walking out after two hours of no food, just a bad bad day for them. You walk into an unofficial museum of Betty Boop items! Lots of fun photos hanging up too. We sat ourselves but I'm not sure if that's the norm. Counter seating seems to be the favorite for the locals who stop in. Right around 6:30 am it started to get real busy but our waitress was still right on point with coffee refills. Pretty nice selection of breakfast items. Coffee was continually filled, yeah! If you like your hash browns crispy you might want to request that. Mine came out cooked but soft. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the sour dough toast was nice and buttery. Great place to stop, at least for breakfast, if you're in this area and want good food and great service. This is the place the locals go. When my husband & I walked in he noticed the "retiree table". I was the only woman in the place except for the waitress. We were created right away, which is a courtesy I expect & enjoy. I ordered the 1/2 order of biscuits & gravy with hash browns, sausage & a scrambled egg. This was a huge plate for under $8 and it did not disappoint. Hubby ordered the western omelette which came with home fries & toast. The omelette was huge & he said it was good. The home fries were not the type either of us care for. They were the frozen cubes that are soft. Can't say if they were good or not, just not our preference. But, my hash browns were cooked perfectly crispy & were great! Very friendly & attentive waitresses. read more

Do you like biscuits and gravy done right? I usually don't order biscuits and gravy because my parents were from the Midwest and we're picky about our biscuits and gravy, and most places serve flat biscuits and bland gravy. This place, though, does it right! High flaky biscuits, lots of pepper, and no trace of gravy in the gravy. Crispy, spicy sausage and tasty eggs. After having the most horrible experience at Bakers Bakery and Cafe (the rudest owner and hostess I've ever met and I can't believe she talks to her customers that way) we walked down the street and found this Gem. This place was SO GOOD, great prices, very nice staff and quick service, and the food was very hot and delicious. It was just what we needed to turn our morning around. Amazing breakfast. Very much an old time cafe, no fancy decor, but it was clean and the service was outstanding. It was very busy the morning we went and they only had one waitress, but she worked her butt off and our coffee cups were never empty. I had the sausage scramble with toast and gravy, it was cheesy and yummy. My husband had the waffles which were cooked perfectly. They were served with warm rich syrup. We had breakfast there on May 1st and the food was very good, as usual. However, I was appalled to see a very young server wearing a grossly inappropriate t- shirt. The t-shirt read " I am an asshole, if that offends you, turn around and walk away". I can't imagine any business allowing that shirt on a server. Well, sadly, our second meal in South Dakota was kind of a bust. The decor was kitschy, and part of the fun. People in other reviews complained about customer service, but we thought it was fine. The menu was very basic, to which my fiancee and I thought would be a good thing, as this is a local dive. Sadly, we were wrong. I ordered the "golden, crispy" waffle with a side of eggs. Sadly, the waffle was neither. Even before I put syrup on it, the waffle was soggy and tasted.....stale? Never thought I'd describe a syrupy waffle as stale before. My eggs were not thoroughly mixed before scrambling, so not too impressed. My babe's ham was ok according to her, but her pancake was just as disappointing as my waffle. I don't give out mediocre ratings lightly. I used to own a restaurant and I just believe in doing the right things, and this place comes a solid halfway to me. Let's try to be positive first. The good... We had brunch and very much enjoyed it. Large portions of bacon and sausage make up for the higher price of the breakfast plates with meat. My wife had the french toast and said it was good. I had a common plate with hash browns, bacon, and eggs. Bacon was a little soft for my taste but portions were crispy. The bad... Would I come back? No. Here are the reasons: 1. When we walked in it just smelled dirty. Kinda like old stale cigarette smoke from a place that used to be smoking but has never cleaned up despite the fact they are non smoking now. 2. Atmosphere - it's way too busy. It's old, and very dirty. Old carpet, dirty popcorn ceilings, and ancient wallpaper. Add that in with all the dated dirty decor it's just kinda gross. 3. Service was good while I was being served, but paying was a nightmare. I gave her my new style chip credit card to pay, and she said their system must make them put the tip in when it's processed. So I verbally told her what to put for a tip (I feel this is extremely unprofessional). Then she came back and said their system insisted on entering a pin for my transaction. I took my card back and gave her cash. Then she argued with me when I told her that their credit card system needs to be updated, as every other restaurant in the country allows for a receipt that you can put tips in afterwards. She said it was because of my chip card, and I told her that it works at every other restaurant I've paid at so its not the card and she didn't like that. All in all, a poor experience. I had this at 3 stars through the whole review but fortunately for me I was writing the review when she argued with me about the payment. 2 stars is all you get. So sad. UPDATE 2 days later: It turns out they have no idea how to run a business. I was double charged as my credit card charge went through and the server had asked to pay cash. I had no idea how horrible this situation was about to turn. I wanted to have the double charge refunded. I drove to the business again, half an hour out of my way thinking they were still open. They had closed before I got there. I phoned in asking for the manager while I was in the parking lot. I was rudely told he was not there and wouldn't be back until tomorrow. I explained that I was inadvertently double charged, and to my surprise he quickly recognized me as the person who left the mediocre review. He did offer to mail me a check right away! I was pleased to hear this. I mentioned I was in the parking lot and I was quickly invited in. Still, everything was being done mostly pleasant, despite the semi-defensive attitude that was being taken on the phone. When I got in the gentleman asked how much the check was for that I was owed and I said $23.80. He proceeded to get cash out of the drawer. He said he was refunding the entire meal and the double payment and I said that wasn't necessary. Then he handed me $50 cash and proceeded to start yelling at me! Yes yelling. He said that all the Betty Boops were put up by his deceased wife. I tried to tell him I owned a restaurant and was just giving my opinion. He screamed even louder that "he didn't care if I owned a restaurant and if I didn't get out of his restaurant that he would punch me in the teeth!" That was a quote! I was stunned. I left and seriously considered calling the police for the threat. I have never been so offended and horrified at a restaurant. The way he talked he had to be the owner or manager (even though he lied to me on the phone). Just because someone doesn't like your decor is no excuse to threaten them, even if you don't agree. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and he is perfectly allowed to keep the Betty Boops up if he wants. I didn't yell and scream at him for having them. I just expressed an opinion and he took it as a personal attack. I changed to 1 star and would put 0 if it was allowed. Never ever patronize this establishment. Horrible place. Will never return and would steer anyone away at all costs. He had the opportunity to increase my rating by doing the right thing and refunding my double charge for the bill. Instead he chose to verbally attack me. I am a reasonable person and would have responded positively to a cheerful attitude and helpful resolution of the situation. He chose this route. read more

I don't give negative reviews often, and I hate doing it. Came in at 10:00am on a Monday on our way home to Denver, and the place was packed. We walked in the door and being from out of town weren't sure if we seat ourselves or not...either way, there didn't appear to be open seating so we waited for an employee to acknowledge us--which they didn't, until I flagged one down. She seemed annoyed. We ended up having to sit at a larger table with people we didn't know, which wasn't a big deal but there were three tables pushed together that could have been easily separated for the two different groups of people. They forgot to bring my son's juice for half an hour. Our food took over an hour and it was literally just eggs, potatoes and toast. There were tables of people who came in after us, and were eating and leaving before our food even arrived. One of the men sitting next to us literally never got his food, he just left. Once we finally got our food, it was....fine. Just fine. It was warm and edible. But nothing at all to make it worth over an hour wait or $9 a plate prices. Do yourself a HUGE favor and hit up Bakers Bakery for breakfast instead. read more

My husband and I stopped at this place for breakfast. The town doesn't have a lot of options. We seated ourselves and we were brought menus. While patiently waiting for our order to be taken, my husband observed a gentleman preparing a customer's meal pick up bread, butter it, place the bread on the plate then wipe his hands over his pants. He was not wearing gloves. Then we watched him deliver the meal to a customer. We felt very unsure of the habits of the food preparation. Not only could we get food poisoning but there's now Covid to worry about. None of the workers wore a mask. We got up and left. Better to go hungry vs food poisoning. read more

This is the place to go for your home cooked meal. The Benedict breakfast with hash browns was amazing. You couldn't even see the plate there was so much food. We visited Our Place looking for breakfast one morning on our trip. While waiting for our meals, we overheard one of the waitresses complain to another employee about feeling very sick and vomiting but still being told by the manager to show up for work and serve customers. A quick stop in for breakfast left us worried about getting sick while on vacation. I am not usually one to leave a negative review, but I felt it was important to let others know of this experience. read more

We are business owners and locals. Have eaten here a half a dozen times or so. Today was the FIRST TIME I WAS GOING TO WALK OUT of a restaurant. My husband and I walked in at 12:10 PM. The sign said seat yourself. We had 4 people ( 3 different parties) come in behind us. The blonde waitress must have thought we weren't local. She totally ignored us, on purpose. Waited and made rounds on all tables, even the ones who came in after us. Then went and sat down at the counter rolling silverware in napkins. I saw a gentleman come out from behind the counter, asked him if we could get a waitress. Found out later he was just a customer himself. He asked us what we would like to drink and brought us 2 ice teas along with a menu. Then took off. This was already 20 minutes after we arrived. The blonde waitress kept going past us to deliver coffee, clean tables and deliver tickets to two of the tables that were after us. We were ready to walk out, when I was able to ask her if we could get a waitress. All she said was "yes". I watched her go back to the counter and roll more silverware. Started to get up and noticed an older lady with long brown hair came out if the kitchen. The blonde signaled to us. This waitress then went to the cash register for a bit and took change to a table. She arrived at our table and apologized for the wait. Sorry, damage already done. We did have the special, I let her know we were local. They have good food, but will no longer spend my hard earned money there. I'm going to tell every local I know about this treatment and all of my tourist customers will be told not to go there. We have never seen this waitress in there before. She waited on and talked to every table in there. I promise my complaint will not stop with this review. read more

The waitress after taking our drink order stopped twice at the neighboring table to give them their check and a coffee refill before bringing us our drinks. We will not eat there again. It seems that SHE has forgotten that customers pay her wages and keep the place open... regulars or TOURISTS. Now that I got that out of the way... food was pretty darn good. Prices were CHEAP, IMO. Ordered their version of eggs benedict which was tons of food and actually really good. Our coffee cup was never empty.
