Custer Wolf was one of the best dining experiences we had during our South Dakota trip. My wife ordered the Orchard Salad and really enjoyed it. I had the Walleye Chermoula, and all I can say is...wow. The fish was perfectly cooked, and the subtle North African spices in the chermoula complemented the walleye without overpowering it. It was one of the best dishes I had on the entire trip. As always, we travel with a long list of dietary restrictions. My wife has gluten and dairy allergies, while I manage Alpha Gal syndrome, a tree nut allergy, and diabetes. Our server was outstanding. I didn't write down her name, but she took the time to understand our food sensitivities, answered our questions, and made sure we were comfortable with our meal choices. The attentive service really elevated the experience. The restaurant has a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. It would work well for a casual business lunch or dinner, and families with small children should feel comfortable here as well. Its location is another plus. It's just off the main tourist area in downtown Custer, making it easy to walk to after exploring the shops, and there is convenient parking nearby. This was an easy five stars for us. I stopped by to pick up dinner for my family to enjoy back at our hotel. The first challenge was parking--it was extremely limited, and I had to circle the building several times before a space finally opened up. When I went inside to the bar to pick up my order, there were two male bartenders working. One was deeply engaged in a lengthy conversation with another customer about different beers, while the other appeared to overlook me, even though I was the only other person waiting. After standing there for a while, I finally spoke up and let him know I was there to pick up a takeout order, and he then assisted me. We ordered the bulgogi dish. It was decent, though it was more of a stir-fry than the traditional bulgogi I was expecting. Be wary of the service here. Our server, a blonde, middle age woman, was noticeably cold to my wife and I when comparing how she treated us compared to other tables. Frequently coming back to other tables to check if anything was needed, striking up conversation, mentioning the specials of the day (which i would've gotten if i had been offered them and hadn't heard after already ordering). We got none of that. As for the food, it's okay. Nothing to write home about for $50 dollars between a drink, an appetizer, and two mid size entrees. I'm assuming the issue is that my partner and I are both in our mid 20s and have the stereotype of not tipping, which is understandable. This dining experience we definitely did hold up the stereotype based on the complete lack of decent service. If you're anywhere below mid 30s, I'd take your money elsewhere. Accused of making a false report??? I am 70 years old, I don't BS, I tell it as it is. That's BS, our server was a young girl named something like Alesha or Allison. And yes you were out of fries and chicken tenders because we were told that delivery got delayed! And BTW, our smashed potatoes came out looking nothing like the photo in the yelp app. They were flat, black and crispy. Maybe it was your tartar sauce, it looked different than what we are used to -it was not thick and creamy. I tried the Wolf Burger and it was actually super delicious. The fries were just "okay". The staff was nice but we did notice a theme throughout our meal. The service was very, very slow. It took quite a while to get our food and just as long to get refills on our drinks. We actually had to flag them down and beg for refills. Also, we were there with kids and the place is basically a bar that happens to serve food. So honestly not the best environment. read more

A bar with not your typical bar food. Located in the heart of downtown custard, this eatery offers indoor, outdoor and bar seating. Exceptionally laid-back, and clearly a favorite of many locals, we were very happy to be seated at the bar and get to know the bartender who made us feel very welcome. The decor is very simple and the focus is on the people and the food. Full bar with many NA options. We were so pleased to find a fish dish that was not breaded, the walleye was exceptional. Wonderful side salads and I was able to enjoy a mixed vegetables with shrimp that allowed me to stick to my diet. The bread pudding was very tempting, but we stuck to our guns! We were on a road trip to Sioux Falls SD, and we stayed in Custer, SD for 3 days. On our first day that we arrived friends recommended The Custer Wolf for dinner. We arrived around 5:45 and the restaurant was busy. We had a choice of sitting inside or sitting in the patio outside. We love patio dining so we chose to sit outside. My husband wanted to try a local draft beer, Jason our waiter suggested he try Lost Cabin Beer in a can. It is a local beer that tastes like a good draft beer. He ordered it and liked it! Almost Every time we went out he would order the Lost Cabin Beer. For dinner we ordered the Walleye, it came with a green garlic sauce on top of the walleye with jasmine rice and broccoli. This was one of my favorite meals, the fish was cooked perfectly. We enjoyed our meal, and the patio is not fancy but we enjoyed sitting outside. We highly recommend The Custer Wolf! When you visit this restaurant and you sit in the patio, ask for Jason is a wonderful waiter! He is friendly, has a great sense of humor and is attentive. Enjoyed lunch at Custer Wolf today. Husband ordered the Walleye Chermoula which was very good with the exception that they leave the skin on. For the money, wish the fish would have been filleted and no skin but otherwise very good dish. I had the Korean BBQ Pork which was an unexpected surprise. Dish was good, a little spice to it but great combo of flavors and tender pork. Restaurant was not overly crowded and we were seated in the bar. The staff was congregating at the bar speaking loudly and was a bit disruptive during lunch. Our server was prompt and efficient but not overly friendly. Again, for not being busy expected more. This is going to be a split review. First the good...service gets a 5. These folks HUSTLE! They were so pleasant and even though they were busy kept smiling. Nice job. The food was also a 5. The rice did have a strong flavor of coconut, but could've been a little moister. We were stopped in Custer for the night and many places were already closing at 7-7:30, so we hopped in to Custer Wolf around 7:30 and were out at 8:25, shortly after their 8pm closing time. We sat out on the covered patio, which was blocked well by the horizontal wood slates. It gave us enough privacy from the main road but still allowed us to look around. The food was great! On the burger, wish there had been a little more jalapeño cream cheese sauce but it still was a great burger. The smash potatoes were AMAZING and perfect in every way. An 11/10 experience! Our hilarious waiter made our already great time here even better. All of the staff, in fact, were all extremely kind, having friendly banter with groups of customers as they served us. The crowd here also was welcoming and queer-friendly. The ambiance was cozy with a true local feel. The bathrooms are so nice here that it's almost comical - there are bidets on the toilet and a great changing table in the women's. The food was delicious. I got the falafel burger with a gluten free bun. The toppings were fresh and the tzatziki sauce it came with fit perfect. Dietary restrictions here are clearly labeled, even for the side dishes. They have a great gluten free selection, even offering a gluten free IPA.
