Yelp did not lie with this spot! Came here after going to Wind Cave and before exploring Custer State Park. I got right in, but I came at a non peak time and not in the middle of summer. I got the fish and chips - I got fries as my side (you don't have to get fries, there are other sides to choose from) and a side salad as well. The food came out quickly and was really good. Big portions of the fish and fries were crispy and hot. The cilantro lime dressing for the side salad was so delish! Service was really friendly and fast. I'd definitely come back! read more

The server recognized that and took a drink off of the bill, which was nice. Only complaint was the amount of flies, but in their defense that seems to be ever single establishment in Custer, so I don't hold that against them. Absolutely fantastic! I have multiple food allergies and our server, Hannah, the kitchen staff, and the manager went above and beyond to not only make me a meal I could eat, but also an extra delicious one! Great local place! Fast friendly service! And the food! He had the NY Strip special with a fresh salad (the creamy garlic Parmesan dressing was delicious), and the smashers (baked red potatoes, popped on the grill for a quick roast, then smashed flat and sprinkled with cheese). All wonderful! I had the Walleye PoBoy with the smashers and was happy with the big chunks of fish and 'taters! We had a delicious lunch here on our way to Custer State Park. It was considered the off season, but this place was very busy! And we soon found out why, great service and great food! The atmosphere was warm and inviting with friendly staff and quick service. We started with a bowl of chili, it was very good, a nice warm flavor, not too spicy. Next, fish & chips and a BCJ burger. Do not eat here, some of the worst service we have experienced in South Dakota. Empty glasses for 15 minutes, no food for 45 minutes. Owner indifferent about the situation. Questioned our complaint, as we pointed to our empty glasses and lack of food on the table. read more

Spur-of-the-moment stop right at the height of lunchtime and while we could wait for an inside table they were able to seat us right away outside. With as busy as they were I expected to wait a lot longer for our food so I almost got lost in the attached gift shop. I'm glad I returned to our table when I did because the food was already on its way! I had the bbq chicken sweet potato flatbread (gluten free) and hubs treated himself to his entire Reuben. Since I was still recovering from food poisoning (see my other recent reviews), I could only eat two pieces of the flatbread... but that's nothing against the meal - it was delicious! My stomach just couldn't handle much more. ‍ Awesome food, fast service, attentive waitstaff and that attached gift shop had finds we've never seen before that made living in an RV a little more challenging. On a Tuesday evening the Custer Wolf was quite busy at 0530pm. We got added to the wait list of at least 30 minutes and wandered off to investigate the one or two shops still open. Called back we were seated in the bar area and met our awesome server. Service was great the entire time. My wife enjoyed their Walleye Po Boy sandwich which is made with cod flown in from Alaska. I got the Chorizo and Shrimp pasta. We both got a side salad with their home made garlic Parmesan dressing. The salads were great and came with a large slice of a beet (I think). We actually enjoyed them more than our entrees not that they were bad or anything. My wife had a lager on tap from their chalkboard while I got an APA called Bruce Banner that was awesome. On the way out I overheard the wait time had gone up to an hour so maybe get there earlier rather than later. read more

This seems to be a very popular restaurant. We got there around six and there was a wait of twenty minutes. However they will take your phone number and text you when a table is available. There is an outdoor covered patio although the dining rooms is more atmospheric. Furniture a bit worn - the chair I sat on felt bumpy due to worn out padding in the seat cushion. Short menu but had some interesting items - the vegetable medley comes with chicken, shrimp or cod. We had it with cod - it was tasty although the cod a bit over cooked and tough, and the grilled state fish which was very good with more tender meat although it was pricey at $28 and it was only a half fish (whereas the vegetable medley has the same amount of food and choice of protein is a good value at $16). All in all however this is the best dinner we've had 3 days into our road trip. Glad we decided to get on the waitlist at the recommendation of the hostess who was very helpful. read more

We received the best service from Sam. Great venue, close to the main drag. Lovely outdoor area, but we opted for a booth inside. Clean place, nice menu. We tried the soup of the day, broccoli and cheese that was full of veggies and avoided being rich. Wee also shared the fish and chips - good portion and cooked nicely. We went to this restaurant twice during our stay. The sautéed mushrooms were the killer good. On her first lunch we also had the smoked trout BLT. We thought this was quite good (not as amazing as the mushrooms though). On her second time through we had the salmon again this was quite good. Highly recommend coming to this restaurant, particularly if you're looking for healthier choices. Overall, we were extremely pleased. read more

Great place to do lunch on a sunny day! We went around 330 and there was a 20 minute wait. We walked around after being added to the waitlist. When we got seated we were front and center at the bar. We ordered a beer and patiently waited for our food. I got the ham and turkey while my husband got the walleye po boy. I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich and the kettle chips were fantastic! The po boy was devoured as were the fries. I thought the service was really good and the employees were happy and busy. This place had a pretty normal casual restaurant menu but had a few twists. I'm a adventurous type. My wife thought I was crazy. I had the smoked trout BLT with a side of chili. The chili came out steaming hot and the smoked trout BLT was great. Rather than mayonnaise they dressed the sandwich with herbed cream cheese. The cream cheese and wheat toast were a bit dry but the bacon and smoked trout were mouth watering. The help was friendly, pleasant and professional and courteous. I went for the reviews. Since not a lot of places to eat. The waiter recommended the steak. I love steak and eat it at least once a week. It had a lot of grizzle parts it also was slathered with butter. That's not how I like my steak. I would not recommend the steak. It was a big and thick steak but would have rather and a small steak with seasons that pop. I had to add pepper for a little more flavor. Smashed red potatoes were great and cooked perfect. Wow! I'm honestly not sure how to review this place. We went here about 5 days ago and it was fantastic. Great service at the bar, ordered beet salad with chicken and the BLT with a couple of local beers, fantastic. So we decided to return today in anticipation of another great experience. Unfortunately, it wasn't in the cards. We sat in a booth and the server took our drink order. She returned with our drinks and promptly spilled a 20oz glass of ice water in my lap. It happens so we sort of laughed it off. Then it took a while for someone to come back and wipe off the table and the booth as I sat there in a pool of water. The server then told the person who wiped the water to just leave it on the floor. So I sat there for the entire lunch with ice and water under my feet. Once our food came the beet salad was nothing close to what we had on our previous visit and the burger was uneatable. We asked if it was grass fed or if it was bison, she said that it wasn't. It smelled really off and tasted really gamey. We couldn't eat it. The server gave us a discount. I don't know if we'll go back or not. I hope that today was just a bad day for them and not a normal occurrence. read more

Chose this place after we were leaving Custer state park. All the food was so delicious! Hunter our server was proficient and he told us that the bread pudding was absolutely delicious, and he was right. 3 of us shared the bread pudding and it still put us over- so classic and amazing!! I had the Buffalo sandwich and it was delightful, very juicy. Friend had the Ruben, she really like it. Hubs had the walleye fish sandwich, he said it was a lot of bread which was too much compared to the amount of fish, but otherwise good. Their fries were also great, so well seasoned.
