Definitely stop here if you are on your way to Mount Rushmore or passing through the town of Custer. We were so happy to find that Custer Wolf was open when basically the whole town of Keystone and Custer are closed after Labor Day. We enjoyed the cowboy caviar, fish and chips, and pub sandwich with soup. The homemade soups were excellent. Prices reasonable, service was really good. Large rotating (I believe) tap list. My boyfriend and I had lunch here, and the food was very good. I had the chili and beet salad. The chili was tasting, just the right amount of beans and meat. I would have liked a little bit more onions, but overall, it was tasting. My boyfriend had the BBQ chicken flatbread. They had sandwiches on the menu, and they all look good. Our service, I think her name was Jennifer, she was friendly and provided excellent service. If you're visiting Mount Rushmore or Crazy Horse, stop by this place for lunch. I had lunch here on Tuesday as I was passing thru town. It's located on the main traffic artery going thru Custer and sits on a corner with an outdoor patio in front. Inside there is the main dining room adjoined to another room in the rear that has more dining tables and the bar. I ordered the shredded Buffalo sandwich with an included side dish of chili for $16. The food came out in less than 15 minutes with an overflowing sandwich and a cup of chili with beans. The sandwich was served on grainy sandwich sized bread with the shredded buffalo meat with slaw on top and a cranberry vinaigrette with a hint of horseradish. I thought it was very tasty and filling and appreciated the fact that the horseradish didn't overpower the meat, slaw and cranberry vinaigrette. The flavor of the lean Buffalo meat reminded me of roast beef but it wasn't as juicy. This was described by the waiter as more of a fork and knife type of sandwich however I was able to keep most of it handheld as the bread held together to the end with care. Also, that cup of chili was alright, alright, alright as Matthew McConaughey would say. I could have eaten a bowl of it! Table service was good however I was never offered to have my drink glass refilled. Oh well, nothing is perfect. I would be happy to return. read more

Found this gem while strolling through "downtown" Custer, South Dakota. Custer Wolf at first glance looks like a typical tavern from 50 or more years ago with both bar and table seating. We just saw herds of bison while touring Custer State Park. I haven't had bison in years so when I saw shredded Buffalo Brisket on the menu, I knew that's what I would order. Actually the decision process was difficult as their Walleye Po Boy also caught my eye. The Buffalo was cooked in a subtle but excellent cranberry barbecue sauce. This added to the overall flavor of the brisket without pouring barbecue sauce on as one often does with traditional barbecue. The meat was also very lean. A huge irritation is brisket poorly trimmed. This was not the case here at all. The sandwich includes brie which I omitted (not a brie fan) and an excellent slaw. One side was included from a nice choice that included fries, side salad, kettle chips, mashed potatoes or onion rings. I ordered the hand battered onion rings which were $2 extra and worth every penny. I loved my sandwich and onion rings. Besides the excellent food, we had great service as well. I don't know if I'll ever be back in Custer but if I am, I absolutely know where to go to eat. read more

Dined here on a Monday night and arrived just after 6pm. It wasn't too busy when I arrived, but about half an hour in, it started to get busy and there was a wait for tables. The service is excellent - friendly and prompt. I ordered the Buffalo sandwich, ceviche and onion rings. As a solo traveller, this was a lot of food for me, but this can be easily shared between two people. Tip: Grab a table before 6:30pm to avoid the dinner rush. Custer Wolf has become a favorite of my husband so we visited it several times during this past trip. The pub sandwich with a side salad is his favorite. I enjoy the BLT (minus the trout since I don't do fish) with a side of the smashers. The food is fresh and is usually delivered in a timely fashion. The servers are friendly and usually on top of the refills and special requests. We'll be visiting again on multiple occasions when we go back in the coming months & years. read more

It's a cosy place and can probably get pretty busy, but it's a good choice! Interesting variety of food, with a rather surprising first entree listed: beef bulgogi. (I had a bite, it was ok.) But I ordered the walleye po boy, which was a decent sandwich stuffed with sort of slaw, and the smashed potatoes side was interesting. Great beer choices on tap and even more in bottles. The homemade bread pudding was a delicious finish. read more

Dining was open both indoors and outdoors. Only the hostess had a mask on while our server did not. This place was very busy on a Tuesday evening. We were given a 30 min wait time around 6pm, left for 15 min, and returned to find our names crossed out. Our total wait turned into 45 min. After being seated, the service was great. We came hungry and ordered the buffalo sandwich and it was good but nothing to write home about. The bacon jalapeño burger was juicy and had a great flavor. Ask for your fries well done and you won't be disappointed. Overall, I was expecting more from the venue but it turned out to be your average burger joint. read more

After a long drive through Custer State Park, we stopped in The Custer Wolf looking for a big bite to eat. We were completely satisfied and cannot stop raving about this restaurant. The service was amazing. Our server was very friendly and attentive to our needs. The food was spectacular! I ordered the Chicken Tenders which were made with their homemade batter and fried to order. The seasoning on the Chicken Tenders was also excellent. My date ordered the Bcj Burger and she said it was amazing with a lot of flavor. We both ordered the Potato Smashers as our side. Although, the best dish was last which was their Bread Pudding. It was the best bread pudding we have ever tried! It didn't have any extra add-ins (such as nuts or raisins) but that's what made it so great. It came with whipped cream and a caramel sauce. Arrived at 5:45 or 6 on a Wednesday in September, and was able to be seated at the bar right away (traveling by myself; there was a short wait for tables). Looking for a healthier option, I went for the falafel burger, and at the bartender's recommendation went with the broccoli for the side. He said he ate it like popcorn, and while that's not broccoli's usual reputation, once it arrived I could see why. Grilled, very tender, and dusted with olive oil and seasoning, I ate several florets before remembering I had a falafel burger, too. Definitely get the broccoli! The falafel burger also was quite good. Lightly fried, fresh vegetables, excellent tzatziki, it did not last long either. Every state out west seems to want you to try their state's beef, so it was a relief to find a delicious way to introduce something other than cow to my diet. It is true that they may run out of things; the couple next to me ordered fish and chips, but they only had enough cod for one order. So the other was upgraded to walleye, with an offer to switch to another order if preferred; they took the walleye. My advice would be to look at the menu and have at least two options that you'd be willing to consider. One of the things I've come to appreciate about being outside major metro areas is that more things are made fresh and in-house, but it also means there isn't an endless supply of it that can be refreshed from the nearest food service outlet if it happens to be more popular than usual on a particular week. Closed on Thursdays (as of this writing). Wednesday weekly specials are posted to their Facebook page and some of them look pretty good; if I lived locally I'd probably pop in to try them every so often. read more

How to begin....I wish with dessert. Homemade bread pudding with warm caramel sauce....the best and how we ended our meal. We started with fried green beans that came with two different homemade sauces. My husband had fish and chips which he loved. I had the po'boy which was so good. The dish was light and the slaw was fresh and good. I recommend the smashed fried potatoes as a side. I hope to come back next time we are in town. Luckily we visited on a nice sunny day so they had the patio open. Hanje, was our server and she was so friendly and helpful. Really appreciated her service and kindness. The food was delish, as i ordered the BCJ burger and my fiancé ordered the wolf burger. We both really enjoyed our it. Had a great lunch with great service on our way to visit Mount Rushmore. The hostess was helpful and friendly and our wait was minimal, having arrived around 2. My wife and I shared the bbq chicken flatbread, and could have been satisfied without entrees. But, who knew? For entrees, she had the Big Buff Sandwich, shredded buffalo with slaw on wheat bread and the potato mashers and enjoyed both, though she said she'd prefer the slaw on the side as it left the bread soggy. I tasted the buffalo and it was excellent, lean with a well-smoked flavor. I had the fish and chips, which was flaky white cod in a beer batter. One of my filets was a little on the well-done side, but I didn't get a bad taste from it. The tartar sauce had a nice lemon zest to it. Food and drink service was quick and friendly. The check, which allowed payment via QR code, was brought between the covers of "The Carnivorous Carnival", by Lemony Snicket, where past customers had scribbled notes so I added ours to the pages. We were passing through and decided to give this place a try. It is very cool inside and the staff were super friendly and helpful. Our waiter was a young man name Sage, and when he talked you just wanted him to pick up a guitar and sing you some Johnny cash. That boy was all country, if it was an act he nailed it! The food was awesome! I got a Burger (I think it was PBJ or something) and my wife got the shredded buffalo. We both loved our food and would be hard pressed not to get them again. But they had a lot of great options, so I would really like to try some other stuff. Hope I make it back to that area some day because I would go back in a heart beat. This is a nice restaurant in Custer, SD. The walleye sandwich is like fish sticks in a bun. It's tasty. My favorite meal is the multi-grain, Buffalo barbecue sandwich. It's so delicious and I highly recommend the overstuffed sandwich. The salad is good with their homemade salad dressing. Give the ranch a try! Hubby had the hamburger and said it was good. The only problem is this restaurant does not take reservations. It's first come, first seated. They have outdoor seating besides inside seating. We have gone when they have great service. They also run short of help occasionally. I believe everyone tries really hard to do their best. read more

We stopped here for a late dinner after spending the day in Deadwood. I am glad we got the chance to eat here before we left town. Unfortunately we didn't grab any photos but the food was really good. I got a Caesar salad with chicken and the fried green beans. Both were really tasty despite definitely not being the premier menu items. My friend has a dietary restriction that requires he eat a low FODMAP diet. The Custer Wolf accommodated this with the steamed vegetable entree. My other friend got the Bulgogi bowl, which was also really good and unexpected in Custer South Dakota, Behind Skogen Kitchen, this was the best place we at in Custer.
