First off - there is TWO locations near to each other. We accidentally went to the one that seems to be listed on maps but it wasn't what we intended. More of a bar with limited options and we had kids. They gave us directions to the other spot which has red signs next to subway and Dairy Queen. HIGHLY recommend this one! The owner and his daughters who helped run everything were so incredibly nice. Went above and beyond. Root beer was next level for all of us. Amazing bison burgers! This was an interesting place. Definitely not a chain, you can tell the owner puts a lot of work and love in to their product. When I walked in, I was a little confused if I had walked in to a candy store or deli, they sell some other products. Someone quickly gave me a menu and welcomed me and cleared that right up, I would get some signage inside so I know this is the restaurant I had been looking for, and maybe consolidate some of the displays. The steak fries were great, homemade and fresh, as was all the food we ate. All in all this place has the feeling of someone's first restaurant, which is really a cool thing to see succeed and get a good product for a good value. While traveling across the United States, we made a stop near Mount Rushmore and discovered Halley's West, a charming restaurant owned and operated by a father-and-son team. Although the space is cozy, it offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor area providing some great views. We visited with a group of seven, and despite the restaurant being busy, our order was taken quickly. The service was excellent--our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure everyone in our group was well taken care of throughout our visit. After placing our orders, we grabbed our drinks from the fountain and settled in to enjoy lunch. One highlight that deserves special mention is their house-made root beer. If you're a root beer fan, you're in for a treat. My brother Luis absolutely loved it and couldn't stop talking about how good it was. The restaurant was clean, welcoming, and full of interesting items available for purchase. The food was equally impressive. The cheese curds and jalapeño poppers were delicious appetizers, and the burger was cooked perfectly. The home fries tasted fresh and homemade, adding a nice touch to the meal. One thing to note is that the restaurant does not have its own restroom. If needed, you'll have to use the public restroom located nearby along the same strip. However, this was only a minor inconvenience and did not take away from our overall experience. What stood out most was the son of the ownership team, who was working the floor during our visit. He was approachable, professional, and genuinely cared about providing great service to every customer who walked through the door. Overall, our visit was quick, enjoyable, and memorable. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by Halley's West for a buffalo burger and a glass of their homemade root beer. We passed by randomly while in Keystone and I saw the hand cut fries and knew I had to have them. Once we ordered, I saw a can of root beer - and I love root beer. We were staying at the nearby Roosevelt Inn and we wanted to grab a quick bite before heading to Mount Rushmore for the evening. We stopped here because they had the best reviews on Yelp in their strip mall. The owner took our orders at the counter. Three of us had the Buffalo Burger and fries which was tasty. We also had a Root Beer Float and the owner brought us extra root beer. We got our food quickly. The owner was super friendly and let the kids in our group pick a rock from a bag. I took off one star because it wasn't air conditioned (they also have outdoor seating) and the door was propped open so flies were dive bombing us while we ate. read more

Trig is the most accommodating restaurant owner that I have ever come across! He honestly cares about his customers. He has several local beers on tap and is happy to help you find the perfect one for your taste. He found my dark beer on the 1st try with only knowing dark but not a Porter. He also found my husband the perfect lager. They also have 1919 root beer on tap. There is inside and outside seating. No frills, just friendly service and fantastic food, which is all that really matters to us. Don't let the prices of the sandwiches put you off, I had a turkey & bacon sandwich, which I could have easily split with someone for about $13. The sandwiches all come with a huge pile of fries or you can substitute fried cheese curds for $4 more. Well worth the price! Portions were huge and the food quality was 5 stars! My hubby ordered the BLT with fries and his sandwich was equally as large as mine. The draft beers are all served in frozen mugs. Trig was busy but always had time to check on all of his customers. I've tried a bison burger a couple times since visiting South Dakota and this place is #1. Absolutely delicious bison burger, and the french fries topped it off perfectly. The pickles on the burger were some of the best pickles I've tasted, and I'm a huge Claussen fan usually. The guy running the shop hooked me up with a couple more pickles to finish off my burger and was super cool about it. Really nice guy. There is small amount of seating on the inside and a little patio outside with tables and chairs, although I did witness people swatting the bees off of their food a lot. The service was excellent and the staff were very nice and attentive. I would absolutely come here again and grab another bison burger. read more

It's a small place with some indoor seating but the bigger outdoor raised patio with umbrellas is really nice. Menu is simple I think basically just burgers but they are good with tasty fries.
