This was an interesting place. Definitely not a chain, you can tell the owner puts a lot of work and love in to their product. When I walked in, I was a little confused if I had walked in to a candy store or deli, they sell some other products. Someone quickly gave me a menu and welcomed me and cleared that right up, I would get some signage inside so I know this is the restaurant I had been looking for, and maybe consolidate some of the displays. The steak fries were great, homemade and fresh, as was all the food we ate. All in all this place has the feeling of someone's first restaurant, which is really a cool thing to see succeed and get a good product for a good value. While traveling across the United States, we made a stop near Mount Rushmore and discovered Halley's West, a charming restaurant owned and operated by a father-and-son team. Although the space is cozy, it offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with the outdoor area providing some great views. We visited with a group of seven, and despite the restaurant being busy, our order was taken quickly. The service was excellent--our server was attentive, friendly, and made sure everyone in our group was well taken care of throughout our visit. After placing our orders, we grabbed our drinks from the fountain and settled in to enjoy lunch. One highlight that deserves special mention is their house-made root beer. If you're a root beer fan, you're in for a treat. My brother Luis absolutely loved it and couldn't stop talking about how good it was. The restaurant was clean, welcoming, and full of interesting items available for purchase. The food was equally impressive. The cheese curds and jalapeño poppers were delicious appetizers, and the burger was cooked perfectly. The home fries tasted fresh and homemade, adding a nice touch to the meal. One thing to note is that the restaurant does not have its own restroom. If needed, you'll have to use the public restroom located nearby along the same strip. However, this was only a minor inconvenience and did not take away from our overall experience. What stood out most was the son of the ownership team, who was working the floor during our visit. He was approachable, professional, and genuinely cared about providing great service to every customer who walked through the door. Overall, our visit was quick, enjoyable, and memorable. If you're in the area, I highly recommend stopping by Halley's West for a buffalo burger and a glass of their homemade root beer. We were staying at the nearby Roosevelt Inn and we wanted to grab a quick bite before heading to Mount Rushmore for the evening. We stopped here because they had the best reviews on Yelp in their strip mall. The owner took our orders at the counter. Three of us had the Buffalo Burger and fries which was tasty. We also had a Root Beer Float and the owner brought us extra root beer. We got our food quickly. The owner was super friendly and let the kids in our group pick a rock from a bag. I took off one star because it wasn't air conditioned (they also have outdoor seating) and the door was propped open so flies were dive bombing us while we ate. read more

I've tried a bison burger a couple times since visiting South Dakota and this place is #1. Absolutely delicious bison burger, and the french fries topped it off perfectly. The pickles on the burger were some of the best pickles I've tasted, and I'm a huge Claussen fan usually. The guy running the shop hooked me up with a couple more pickles to finish off my burger and was super cool about it. Really nice guy. There is small amount of seating on the inside and a little patio outside with tables and chairs, although I did witness people swatting the bees off of their food a lot. The service was excellent and the staff were very nice and attentive. I would absolutely come here again and grab another bison burger. read more

Got there after 15 min walk at 10:45. Waited until 11:00. No activity. Called and gentleman said 10 or 15 minutes until open. Waited until 11:15. Still no activity, so left. I had the double Buffalo burger with pepper jack cheese and it was divine. The homemade, house cut fries are hot and delicious. I love fries like that. They feature a very good root beer on tap here as well, served in a frosty mug!! I enjoyed the great outdoor patio seating for my visit. They serve ice cream too and of course delicious root beer floats. A bit pricey, but hey small resort town...the usual. It was worth it and very scrumptious. I left for Mount Rushmore very satisfied. It's a small place with some indoor seating but the bigger outdoor raised patio with umbrellas is really nice. Menu is simple I think basically just burgers but they are good with tasty fries. Great locally owned restaurant! We had the grilled chicken sandwich my husband the BBQ and bacon and I the buffalo. The chicken was melt in your mouth delicious. Found this place near our hotel and we were so glad to stop by. Buffalo burger deluxe combo (#3) - pretty much everyone ordered this and it was just so good. The meat wasn't dry at all and the fries were nicely seasoned. Definitely get a side of ranch! All the food came out so fast and that was perfect because we were really hungry! 1919 Root Beer - this was an option to swap out your fountain drink in the combo for an additional fee and it was SO GOOD/ WORTH. I'm not even a huge fan of root beer but he was talking about how this comes from his own brewing company so I though, why not? I was sooo happy with it, as was the rest of my family. We all agreed this is probably one of the best. Overall, the guy at the register (who I guess to be the owner) was so helpful and friendly that it just adds on to our experience of this place. He happily chatted with us and anticipated our needs for sides, sauces, etc, offering it before we could even ask which sounds basic, but isn't always common. We literally stopped by again two days later, hoping it would be open before we left South Dakota. We were really disappointed that they weren't open yet and we really needed to get on our way. I recommend people try this place out. If we ever come back to Keystone, I would definitely stop by again. I know I'll be ordering that root beer online! read more

This place isn't very busy but it should be! - my 11 year old son. We stopped in, looking for a quick meal during a stay near Mt. Rushmore and had a great experience. The gentleman behind the counter was very nice and helpful, he also made my kids feel welcome. The burgers (we had both bison and beef) were great and the root beers that the kids had were fantastic! After ordering, I decided that I wanted a beer and so I went back, he took the time to ask what type of beer I like and suggested a couple and provided me with tastes; I ended up with a fantastic one. Overall, we all enjoyed our food and the service was top notch! This is the kind of restaurant that I wish we lived near so I could go back often. Halleys West is my favorite restaurant in Keystone! Their buffalo burgers are amazing! My ridiculously picky kid absolutely adores their chicken tenders. He proclaimed it the best chicken he's ever eaten. I may be biased, but after trying to get this kid to enjoy eating for the last FIFTEEN years, I think his recommendation is valid. The root beer on tap is served in frosty mugs and it is DELICIOUS! They also serve it in to-go cups and large cans. My only regret is that I didn't try the pulled pork. Next time! The restaurant is run by some of the most lovely people you'll ever meet. The service is fast and friendly. I highly recommend trying Halleys West. They also do take-out!
