Classic cowboy bar in Pringle, South Dakota that we stumbled upon after looking at a house in the area. The ambience is straight out of a western with lots of taxidermy on the walls and cool western and cowboy wall art. Great vibe with lots of locals having lunch. We got a booth seat and enjoyed a couple of sandwiches (fried fish [cod] & a blt with fries and onion rings, respectively). Food was fried to perfection and we even enjoyed a delightful house made peanut butter cake with a coffee! The service was swift and kind, and the bathroom even had cute wall art to match the dining room. We checked out the bar and while it was small, it was cozy and they had a nice billiards table definitely somewhere we would wanna go on a Friday night to do some people watching. My sister and brothers were visiting for a funeral. I suggested we try the Hitchrail. Someone said the Fish Fry Special was good. We ordered drinks from the bar Food order - 4 had the special one ordered off menu. There was only one other table of diners . We were there during thier serving hours. When the bill came each plate had a $5.00 upcharge for a "large party fee". FIVE adults behaving nicely...no food sent back..Didn't bother the wait staff ..some ordered another drink with the meal. We had just finished coming from windcave National park and was headed toward jewel cave National monument. We were starving and couldn't wait any longer and found Hitchrail Bar on Yelp and it was a plus that it was close by. We were the only ones there to eat at the time but the place was clean and the owner was very friendly ! The menu had a variety of items and for a party of 8 with 3 kids we were all satisfied. We had prime rib French dip, fish sandwich, patty melt, Buffalo burger, and chili all were cooked deliciously the star was the brisket tacos those were delicious. The last time we were there, the cook split an order portion of brisket into two, and six people, with only five ordering, got charged 20% because of an unstated policy to do so to groups of six or more. We were hungry after leaving Wind Cave NP and had heard of the small town of Pringle with a cool story. When they were reintroducing Elk in Custer State Park they broke out of the corral when the train whistle blew. They all went to Pringle making it the Elk Capital of South Dakota. The town has a unique sculpture so definitely check that out as well. Anyway, back to the restaurant. The outside and inside are rustic but do not let that fool you. Everyone is super friendly and the food is excellent. The prices are excellent too. Will definitely come back here. The reviews I read slightly heightened my expectations and they weren't met. While it is more the just bar food, it's about average for what we had. Burgers were good, however the fries were undercooked. Fried chicken is over priced for what you get and the country fried steak, while a large portion , is expensive and too much food. If the portion was smaller one might have room for the desserts they had advertised. The small salad bar was fresh and good. I will give it another try when we are back in the area. read more

Just say no!!!! Ordered a burger and fries and was asked "pickles, lettuce, onion, tomato okay?" And I said pickle and lettuce. Well they charged me 50 cents for lettuce!!! Where the locals eat!! I you ever find yourself visiting Custer and are looking for a little adventure head south out of town down to pringle (15min drive) of what I consider the best food in the southern hills. Having lived in the Custer area for the past 6 years I have to say almost any resteraunt you try will be a disappointment if your a foodie. The few exceptions are the Alpine Inn (Hill City, SD), and this place. Chef -D took over the Hitch Rail Bar a few years ago and has really put his mark on it. You can't go wrong with the prime rib or the smoked chicken. Also the burgers are cooked to order, and he produces many different nightly specials. One thing to warn you about!!!! If your in a hurry come back some other time because this place is about fresh cooked food served hot and right. The sign says it all when you walk in the front door. Happy eating. read more

Who knew you'd ever find food this good in a town of 125 people in South Dakota? My cousins say this used to be a very, ahem, rustic bar 10 or 15 years ago. But they have new kitchen staff who have really stepped it up. Think country fried steak the size of your head, perfectly flaky walleye, and amazing prime rib. And it was CHEAP by East Coast standards - $3 a beer and $18 for the prime rib. And the staff are super friendly. Don't be put off by the dirt road, or the elk heads on the walls, or that cowboy in the corner who gives you the side eye - this place is worth the drive, and well worth the money. read more

Being close to the end of the season on a Sunday evening, we were finding no place to eat in Custer, but the workers at the Purple Pie clued us in to the Hitchrail just 10 miles south, so we got our pie to go and headed to the Hitchrail, just look for the "largest bicycle sculpture" and keep your eyes to that side of the road and you'll see the place (only business in town). We went in the restaurant side and we were met by the new owner of four months. She was from MN as was I originally so we had a great conversation about her experience when 500 cycles suddenly showed up from two concurrent poker runs during the Sturgis rally, she was prepared with plenty of beer. So it was no surprise she had our favorite beer on hand. I had the roast beef sandwich and fries for $6.99 and it was not only tasty, but HUGE! The fries must be home cut with skins, so not your ordinary frozen store bought variety and they were good. My girlfriend got a hamburger that came with the same fries that was cooked to order and she left nothing on her plate. We watched the Vikings lose to Denver on the big screen, which was our only disappointment. read more

Don't really know if this place is just trying to feed bar patrons or wants to be more, but we were really hoping for a restaurant since they are SO close to our new rural home. First experience was pretty good, but much busier time of the season I guess, maybe the cook had to try harder? We have tried a couple more times and after the last time, I'd say call the health department honestly! The waitress is so very nice and friendly but the cook must be related to the owner - can not imagine ANY other reason he would still work there!! The white gravy was actually Soured ( spoiled ) I asked if maybe they don't use it much and heat it as needed? Maybe it is kept at a holding temp that isn't quite high enough? I haven't even mentioned the lack of quality in the piece of Prime that I was served, just awful - it was almost like RUBBER ! And in each experience, the cook took no responsibility in any of the issues we had with our food or concern that we may choose not to return. We live local, we are not tourists, we were excited to see that this place was Very close to our new home. As so many restaurants close for the season because of the slow tourist traffic, we had imagined that this owner would appreciate our regular business. Guess Not . If they really just want to own a Bar and do not care about a Restaurant, they should give it up rather than do such a half way job! Would really love to see them CARE!! read more

The Hitchrail is our favorite restaurant in the Black Hills. It's definitely worth the beautiful drive to Pringle to enjoy the best food you will find in the hills. The menu has something for every one, from pit smoked brisket and ribs, burgers and steaks, to a weekly fresh fish special. There are some very yummy and unique appetizers that are large enough for a meal. I love the brisket tacos. I crave Chef D's nachos with pulled pork. The plate is loaded with fresh chips, a delicious cheese sauce, pork, fresh jalapenos and homemade salsa. Chef D has been a Chef at some very fine restaurants around the world and the Hitchrail reflects his creativity and professionalism. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. In the summers there is an outdoor patio area to enjoy a meal in the beautiful surroundings. read more

We really enjoyed the ambiance and "feel" of the Hitchrail. The food and service were both excellent. We had the flat iron steak and it was cooked to a perfect med-rare and very tasty. There is really nothing else in Pringle but this restaurant is worth the drive while you are visiting the more touristy areas of the Black Hills. read more

Although the hours on Yelp clearly say the Hitchrail Bar is open until 9 pm, when we showed up for dinner at 8:10, they informed us the kitchen closed at 8. We drove 30 minutes out of our way to eat here since it is one of the few restaurants open on Sunday. The waitress was nice enough to direct us to another restaurant 20 minutes away, but that one was closed as well. Luckily we had peanut butter at our hotel to feed our 4 children since we couldn't find any other open restaurants in the vicinity on Sunday. I can't speak to the quality of the food, but please update your hours so others aren't disappointed as well. I live eight miles from here and have eaten here four times so far. Their food is made from scratch and I have always had great food. The prices are very reasonable. Thursdays they have all you can eat ribs and Fridays and weekends they have excellent prime rib. You owe it to yourself to try this place. I took two of my nephews here and they said that they were the best burgers they had ever had. It is not a fancy place at all. Just a good ol' time restaurant with great food. There are a few elk and deer heads hanging on the wall and a bar/pool room with juke box connected by a small hallway. What more can I say. Excellent food at great prices. read more

We ate dinner atThe Hitchrail last night and had the best food in the Black Hills!! The place has been recently remodled with a great old west atmosphere. The new menu has many options to select from. We had buffalo meatloaf which was delicious and the 4 cheese mac and cheese with sausage, fantastic! You can tell there is a talented chef in the kitchen. I would reccomend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal.
