I didn't like the small potato bites. Should have mashed potatoes $55 Bison ravioli was good (not made in house) but the sauce was on the salty side. Medjool dates filled with blue cheese were great $10. $10 is too expensive for these though. Overall a great place for a relaxing dinner. Or just have wine and appetizers. read more

The interior was nicely appointed and the staff was very friendly. The food was good - not exceptional. My husband ordered a wedge and what he got was a chopped salad. Apparently, they don't serve actual wedges because it causes too much waste. The owner agreed they need to change the name of the salad. My beet salad was tasty. Now after waiting 50 minutes with only one other couple in the restaurant, our entrees were served. They should have some games to play at the table for the long wait times. We were actually planning to order dessert but ran out of time. My salmon was cooked very well and tasted fresh. I just had one of the worst experiences in the food industry ever, the food was bad and the wine was bad so it's just looking for a place to redeem myself and have a nice glass of wine. What a gem ! I was greeted with the door by some warm and friendly individuals Christina, who introduced me to her father and will the server and now I'm part of the family. My belly was full yet. Christina forest some scallops at me with an incredible glass of wine, followed by another incredible glass of wine and now my previous horrible experience is been erased and humanity is redeemed itself. My husband and I dined here and were expecting fine dining food. We ordered crab stuffed mushrooms and were excited for them but they turned out dry and surprisingly spicy; couldn't taste the crab. Our entree was good as well as the dessert. Portions were small-the menu states "all entrees include potato and chef's spread du jour." We took that to mean a vegetable side would not be separate. This is pretty standard at other restaurants in the area. We were charged $6 each for a certain small side of vegetables-maybe 4 squash medallions, two thin asparagus, and one short carrot section cut in half. I was blown away by the exquisite wine selection. WOW! There were more fabulous wines to choose from than in some of the elite restaurants in big cities. A $43 bottle of wine we were gushed was a fave mid-priced selection, but nowhere near the $125 one, which of course isn't for everyday. $29 pasta primavera, with slivers and fragments of a few vegetables, under salted, oily, no hint of herbs, rather than, say, the bright dish full of asparagus tips, peas, peppers, etc., with fresh herbs and a bit of lemon one expects. $21 for a two scallop small plate: one the size of a nickel, the other a dime. One person was happy with their dish. A second felt they had at least gotten the best deal at the table, at nearly $40 for a cheese plate and a salad. There are lots of 5 star reviews for this place, but most talk about warm fuzzies, not specifically about the food. The food we experienced was ordinary at best, and grossly overpriced. Oh. And entree's were to get a baguette with a spread. Our table received four thin slices of a small baguette with a tablespoon of spread. Dessert? We shared a flourless chocolate torte with caramel and salt -- 1/2" thick wedge of very dense material that took effort to penetrate. $10. read more

The food however left a lot to be desired especially for the price. Being from New York I was shocked at how expensive everything was and that is saying something. We ordered the dates with blue cheese which were over cooked and dry. We got the berry salad which was $15.75 and added 4 prawns which made the salad $28.50 but only received 3 shrimp not prawns. We paid $30 for a salad that is INSANE! Our main was a "pizza" which was so dry. If it was advertised as a flatbread or crisp we wouldn't have been as disappointed. Slowest Service in the West! The good: The food, what we got to eat of it, was pretty good, especially the mushroom "sachets". The menu is interesting and varied, and the chef is obviously trying to create new dishes based on Dakota ingredients. Their wine list is very impressive, especially considering how scarce good wine is in Rapid City in general. The bad: The menu is divided into "small plates" and "entrees". The small plates are *small*, as in 2 or 3 bites max, and range from $6 to $11. So if you choose to eat an all-small-plates dinner, you'll need to order 3-4 per person, making for a $40/person dinner, not including wine. While some of the small plates were quite good (sachets, green goddess salad, duck sausage), some were purfunctory and bland (risotto, duck fat potatoes), or downright inedible (bison skewer). The ugly: We arrived at 6:30. We ordered one round of small plates, planning to order more depending on what we liked. And then we waited. And waited, and waited, and waited. It took 45 minutes for the salad and the bread & dip to arrive, and then the dip wasn't what we'd been told it was. The remaining appetizers took another 30 minutes to arrive. The server came out multiple times to apologize for the delay, but not once did she offer us bread, crackers, or anything. She did try to sell us more wine, though. By the time we left it was 9:30, and we were still hungry. We had to go to Armadillo's afterwards. There's far more to running a good restaurant than cooking good food, and Wine Cellar doesn't have it. This place deserves to go out of business. read more

I was in Rapid City doing family history research and was looking for a quiet place for dinner and good wine. I saw the Wine Cellar on-line and decided to try it. It was Thursday evening so I didn't think that reservations would be necessary. Wrong. In the summer, Thursday evenings are bustling as there are multiple bands playing around Rapid City downtown. They were full! I said I was looking forward to a good glass of wine, Christy took pity on us and talked to the chef. We sat at a high top table in the bar area and had a wonderful dinner. I have been looking forward to coming back here for the last 2 years, so I was thrilled when my husband agreed to go again. I was disappointed to find that it was not at all the experience I remembered. We had reservations for their "intimate back alley", and while I was glad I tried it, I wouldn't choose to sit there again. The exposed brick is nice, and they have put up curtains to give each table for 2 some privacy. I felt we were a little close to the kitchen and some of those noises, so I would prefer to sit in the restaurant proper again next time. We ordered a really good bottle of Riesling, and small plates this night: Scallop Lollipops, excellent Artisan Cheese plate, good Forest Mushroom Ragut, very good Buffalo Skewer, unavailable Pork Tenderloin Skewer (ordered in place of the Buffalo) , ok Tre Ravioli di Formaggio, very good What I remembered the most, and what I had been dreaming of for 2 years, is their Hardwood Smoked Bacon Twist. I had a twist with my meal before, and it was everything bacon should be - crisp, thick, smoky, salty, delicious. They now have the bacon twist on their menu for $3.75 per twist, and because of my last experience, I ordered 2 twists. What we received is not what I remembered - limp, greasy, sad little spirals that could barely hold their shape. During a conversation with our server, I expressed my disappointment and she said she would pass this along to the chef. I felt they should have offered to remove these 2 items from our tab, and I was surprised and disappointed that they did not. I went here last night for dinner since I was staying at the Alex Johnson and didn't want to drive far. I am so glad I decided to go here! The atmosphere was very nice and Paige, my waitress, was a gem! Since I travel for work, I eat out by myself. The staff made me feel extremely at ease (even after I hit their lamp trying to take off my coat and it fell to the floor). They didn't even bat an eye to it. Paige waited on me hand and foot and helped me pick out different food options. Since I wasn't feeling super hungry, I decided to order two small plates and surprised myself by going with a dessert (something I don't normally do because I find most places have their desserts bursting with sugar). I ordered the Champagne Risotto and the Vegetarian Stuffed Mushrooms (there is a meat option too). The Risotto had a lot going on with the Parmesan cheese and was the lesser favorite of the two (though I would still give it a 3.75/5 stars). If you're a cheese-obsessed person though, this is the dish for you! I really loved the stuffed mushrooms! I loved the chèvre, the different herbs, and especially the baby carrots. The presentation of both dishes were amazing, with the mushrooms taking the cake. Speaking of cake... I ordered the bittersweet chocolate cake and DAMN that was a good choice! Like I stated before, I don't normally order dessert because I don't like syrupy sweet or sugar-heavy desserts. I decided on it because I had noticed the care that went into each dish along with the quality of ingredients. I could tell that they were fresh ingredients and cooked with love. The bittersweet flourless chocolate cake blew me away. I loved how the homemade caramel, sea salt, and chocolate balanced each other out perfectly and one did not over power the other two. This cake was not super dense, which I believe allows for all the flavors to come out nicely. I also loved the portion sizes of each dish and I believe it's important to walk out of a restaurant not needing to be rolled out the door. When one savors a dish and the dish ingredients are meant to be savored due to the flavors, you don't need to stuff yourself to the brim. I left the Wine Cellar very satisfied and the restaurant and staff were just wonderful. We stumbled upon this restaurant our 3rd night in Rapid City and WHAT A FIND. We did not have a reservation (hence the "stumbled upon"), but they happily sat us where we asked, at the bar. Since it is a wine cellar, we busted the budget and got a whole bottle of wine (whereas we normally get only 2-3 glasses total). The Covilla (Rioja) was very, very good. So good, we were sad when we finished it. Since it is a small plates place, we ordered Crispy Brussel Sprouts with Bacon (they were some of THE BEST I've ever had) and Bison Sliders (very flavorful, with a great bun, possibly brioche?). I thought we ordered a third item, but alas, I cannot remember. Did I mention how good the wine was? Very, very good. The couple behind us (out on a date night) told us about several other places to try and things to see in Rapid City. AND, the bartender (Alex?) was a super conversationalist. He even told us about a speakeasy we slipped into later that night (sans reservation - livin' dangerously!) On to dessert -- of which we could not choose, so we got two (which, again, we rarely do!). The Flourless Chocolate Cake was AMAZING, and paired very well with the Covilla. My boyfriend got the special dessert -- a creme brulee. With his mouth full, he raved. I excused him. The decor is intimate and cozy, the wine section varied and outstanding, and the staff warm and friendly. I would DEFINITELY make this a stop when in Rapid City! read more

We got there and the place isn't too busy, maybe 2 other tables. The waiter was courteous and easy going, everything was going fine, until appetizers. I don't understand how it took them more than half hour to get our appetizers out. It was just a cheese plate!!! I ordered the chicken stuffed in pastry. It was ok, a little too salty after the third bite. My cousin ordered the risotto and cheese. I tasted it and it was nothing special. My friend had the pork. I thought that was the best one in the table, but it was also nothing too special. Another friend had the salad with blue cheese and beets (I think). He loved it and our other friend also agreed. So I guess they can rock the greens, but not the other things on the menu. Another negative thing is the service was too slow. We got there at 7 pm and didn't get out until almost 9:30. Not because we were too chatty but because the food took forever to come out! I'm all about taking my time during meals and savoring the food, but not for this place. Taste was mediocre, even coming from one very hungry girl. Overpriced and the service sucks!!! Do yourself a favor and venture out to the other outstanding restaurants.
