This is a nice little place to get a beer and a meal. It's a family-friendly sports bar. Just like everywhere else in town, they are understaffed, but the staff is very friendly. I think this must be a family owned place, because at some point, I saw a 13 year old (ish) boy clearing tables and handing out candy at the tables. We were sitting for quite a while before anyone noticed us and brought menus. But once we did get the attention of our waitress, she was very nice. There's a kids menu with the typical offerings. They mostly have the standard beers and a handful of local offerings. I had the hazy pineapple beer, and it was okay. My husband tried a local IPA, and he liked it. I had the fried shrimp and the housemade potato chips. They make their own chips (good, although unevenly salted) and they come with a delicious french onion dip, just like the stuff I remember from childhood. My husband and I couldn't get enough. The menu is otherwise pretty burger-based, but that's fine for a setting like this. They have a pool table that takes quarters. We came here after walking out on Murphy's next door (didn't even order)--still set on happy hour drinks and wanting to make use of our paid parking. The outdoor courtyard looked promising, but once inside, we were met with a dim, dated space and a strange vibe. My husband was hungry, so we stayed. He ordered the Monte Cristo--the smallest we've ever seen--served with what tasted like leftover fries. The happy hour drinks? Limited to a few beers the waiter was vague about. We ordered the $4 chips and queso, which somehow managed to be worse than canned. Hoping to salvage things, we tried a game of pool--but the lone table was so close to the wall, we couldn't take proper shots. i want to say first off the food was great so it's really upsetting having to write this. my boyfriend and i entered the restaurant at 7 and they are already closing. i asked my waitress if they were closing and she said "yes because theyve been slow all day". i understand because i've worked in the service industry and slow days suck. however she proceeded to get our drink order than solely focus on closing, leaving our drinks to sit at the bar for 10 minutes until another waitress got them. then it takes 30 minutes to get our food when there were maybe 6 other patrons. we then waited for our check while she chatted and rolled silverware with a coworker. this is also not the first time ive had disappointing service. this is again upsetting because i loved thirstys but i will not be coming back read more

They welcome and serve pets, which is awesome. However, the service and food is, I hate to say, subpar. The burgers have no real outstanding quality and my chicken wrap was packed with lettuce to substitute for the immense lack of chicken. The bar and seating areas were not even at half capacity but we hardly saw our waitress, which is a problem when you're waiting on a refill of water. Additionally, they have one beer menu that is located on a board inside. Therefore, if you want a beer, you can order it from the table but first you need to leave your table, travel inside, and awkwardly stare at a wall menu with others. This is problematic for anyone with a walking handicap. Now, having said all that I must say that the food is not disgusting and the restaurant is not trash. There are just a few things that need correcting and updating (namely the attentiveness of the staff, food preparation, and modernizing the beer menu). If you want a burger and beer .. look no further. Prices are reasonable, the food is pretty damn good! They have great happy hour pricing. The service is amazing, awesome waiters/waitresses, professional. Of course they have food besides the hamburgers and it's all good. The atmosphere is perfect, enough going on around you but not so loud you can't have a conversation. I've never had a bad time or left disappointed. This was my third ever work trip to Rapid City, and I'd been craving a good Indian taco, something which is virtually impossible to find in the city where I live. I figured being that the Indian taco, along with chiklis, is one of the so-called state foods of South Dakota, I wouldn't have too much trouble finding them. Wrong. I'm sure they're easy to find if you live here and know where to go, but being an out-of-stater, I had to look up various restaurant menus to find places that served them (which I knew would mean they were going to be generally less authentic). Eventually I found Thirstys, which has an Indian taco on its menu. First thing I asked was, could I substitute the taco meat for grilled chicken (I don't eat beef), and was told that wasn't a problem. Next, I asked if it came with anything. Answer: No. So I ordered the taco, along with an a la carte side of cole slaw. It took about 10-15 minutes for my order to be ready, which was fine, as the place was medium-busy. I took my order back to my hotel, and dug in. I tried the cole slaw first. The portion was disappointingly small, but it was very good. Unlike most cole slaws, this actually had a little bit of a spicy kick to it, which I enjoyed. I then proceeded with the Indian taco. Everything that came on top was pretty on point. The grilled chicken was flavorful, and they didn't skimp. Everything else, the beans, the cheese, the jalapenos, etc. all complemented the chicken very nicely. Then I got to the fry bread underneath it all, which as it turned out, was absolute trash. In my experience, the fry bread is the star of the show in an Indian taco, or at least the co-star. This, whatever it was, tasted nothing like actual fry bread. It was very thick, doughy, and completely tasteless. A good fry bread just tastes like fried dough (think of a beignet without the powdered sugar), and should be fried up fresh at the same time the order is placed. Perhaps this thing resembled an actual fry bread at some point during the evening, but by the time it was served to me, it was just a cold, bland, nearly inedible mess. So, that was my Thirstys experience. I toyed with the idea of giving them 3 stars because the service was good, but then I remembered the utter disappointment of what they actually served up. I hadn't had an Indian taco for years, was really looking forward to it, and after Thirstys, I just can't even fathom wanting to eat one again for a long time. I also found being in the place to be a bit unpleasant, because the smell of spilled beer seemed to permeate the air. So 2 stars it is, and it's highly doubtful I'll ever go back. read more

We try to find places where we can take our dog and this is on a strip of bars/pubs, where dogs are welcome. This was our first time here and the customer service was stellar. They brought water for our pup and offered a pup menu. We had the Super Burrito and chose to get half and half for the topping. Half cheese, half green sauce. A French dip with pepper Jack and mustard based potato salad, then kids Mac n cheese and fries. Everything was really good and well made. Not expecting much from a "bar menu", we pleasantly surprised! Great beer selection, way better than expected food with flavors, portions, and price. The Thai Peanut wrap was fabulous! Awesome flavors and just the right amount of heat. Sweet potato fries were homemade and delish! The Mushroom Swiss with gravy was a game changer. Thirsty's is one of the more under-appreciated spots in downtown Rapid City in my experience. It's never the first place that comes to mind when locals think of grabbing a bite to eat or a cold drink, but it should be, because this place excels at what they do. I think of them as a hidden gem in plain sight and am quick to bring out-of-town guests here. One word of caution: don't expect a full bar. If you want that, head next door to Murphy's, or across the street to Teddy's. It's strictly beer and wine here, but they have an excellent selection of 30+ beers on tap, many of which are local craft brews, plus a few ciders. They are always cold, refreshing, and delivered promptly. The food is fresh and tasty. Thirsty's has some of the best chislic in town and I am addicted to their wraps--especially the Turkey and Ranch Chicken. I get them with a side of coleslaw or German-style potato salad for a perfectly filling, delicious meal. Other highlights include the Indian tacos, Spicy Chicken Sandwich, and burgers. The only thing I've ever been disappointed with here is the French fries, which I feel are mediocre. They're not bad, per se...but I usually opt for sweet potato fries instead. Those are excellent. I love the decor inside Thirsty's, but usually head for the patio (at least when it isn't snowing!). It's fairly secluded, has a couple of fire pits, and is dog-friendly. Service there is attentive. Don't overlook this place the next time you're in town; it's a great and unassuming spot with good food, an impressive beer selection, decent prices, and friendly service. read more
