I'll start with the good part, our service was great. Very friendly and attentive. However, the food was mediocre and overpriced. We were seated inside, so I can not speak to the rooftop atmosphere, but the view from our window was nice. The restaurant had a feel of being dirty and dated (not in a vintage good way, just worn out). The menu was extremely disjointed. The items would start out sounding good, but then they would throw some things in trying too hard to be original, but actually ruined the dish. Fantastic! Gorgeous views, fun atmosphere, attentive staff (yay for Francis!) with great personalities. Every item we ordered was perfection. I don't mind paying the price, but when you don't get banged for the buck, it saddens me. The service was painfully slow. It would've gotten a one star, except for the great view and ambience. I ordered the salad which I needed to cut up unless it's a little gem salad you shouldn't have to do that And the scallops were extremely over seasoned. Scallops need to be kept simple and they were done to perfection as far as they were not chewy or gummy, but I could've been eating anything and you could've put that seasoning on it to disguise the flavors. I would avoid this place when you're downtown and try and find something different because the price does not equal the delivery. Absolutely the worst service we have ever had in what is supposed to be a high-end restaurant. Our server was rude and scattered from the moment we sat down. She was clearly annoyed about any questions we asked about the menu. We did get served a cocktail, but had to ask for water on one of her many trips flying past us. When she finally did come to take our order she was distracted and kept telling us how busy she was. I ordered and salad ($18), hubby ordered soup ($12) and we both ordered the halibut ($52 @) Waited and waited and then later she appeared and asked us if we wanted to order app or soup/salad. Told her we already did but realized the wait was going to likely be long, so we ordered the "bread service" ($10). Several minutes later a small, luke warm baguette appeared with butter and O&V. We had no utensils or napkins so couldn't butter the bread. 20 minutes later she appeared and I mentioned the napkins and silverware. She flew off the handle...saying that she was "too busy" and had "other customers to take care of" and she took off again like a chicken with her head cut off. (Soup and salad had still not been served.) At this point, (1.5 hours in) the hubs said that he had had enough and got up to leave. I stood up, dumped the bread in my purse, picked up the plate with butter and O&V went to the host(ess) stand. I told the gentleman that we were not going to pay $200+ for that kind of service. She made several histrionic passes by us, blaming us for her bad service. The guy was nice and he apologized but it was too little to late. Can't say how the food was, because we never got any. Cocktails were good, bread service a joke. PS went downstairs to Paddy's (Irish pub) and had great service and food for likely what was 1/4 of the price. read more

The ambience could use a little upgrade the service although a little slow is very friendly. The wine selection is also great and very reasonably priced. We had the Textbook Cabernet. For food we tried the cheeseboard, bread, beet salad, creamed mushroom and chicken Brie with homemade linguine, faroe salmon, diver scallops and ragu. Everything was fresh and tasty. Very intimate dining room off the beaten path. The food is very good, and we enjoyed the chicken wrapped in bacon, rack of lamb, and salmon dishes. The mushroom ragu was incredibly filling and bursting with umami flavor. I wish this dish had an acidic counterpoint to balance the rich umami. Overall the portions are generous. Service was also friendly. Don't miss the pistachio ice cream and the cheesecake for dessert. Cheesecake is topped with a tangy apple butter, which is a nice departure from the usual berry topping. I've wanted to visit juniper for a while now and was so glad we were able to stop in during this girls trip. Firstly, this venue is very cozy. Wood decor/detailing and strategically placed greenery give it a modern, homey, comfortable vibe. The menu (which is updated every few weeks or so) has something for everyone. Their diverse menu can accommodate any diet. We had the pleasure of being served by Carla who truly made us feel at home. What I loved about this dining experience was that there was a feeling of being rushed so the server could turn the table. We sat and enjoyed our meals and wine and talked for HOURS. It was fabulous and just what us gals needed. As for the food *chefs kiss* Everything was fantastic. Every cheese, every dip and spread, every bite of my main dish -- Devine. We overheard that people make a trip to Rapid City just to eat at Juniper and I do not blame them. The Petit Filet at Juniper is arguably more memorable than Mount Rushmore! :-) I decided to venture off solo on my last day of a business trip. After asking a few locals what the best restaurants in town are, I narrowed it down to Juniper and two others... I chose Juniper, and I could not have been more impressed! I didn't order anything crazy. A salad, a steak, and a glass (or 3) of wine. 1. Salad: The Juniper salad was perfect. See photo. Simple... with blue cheese, bacon, tomatoes, and a few croutons. Perfect! 2. Steak: The Petit Filet. Here's their secret (revealed after interrogation of my kind, sincere server Brooke)... coarse salt and pepper, a bit more coarse salt, cast iron skillet, oven to finish... and you're in heaven! It's one of two enters that they keep on the menu. Don't change a thing! :-) 3. Anyone who rates this restaurant lower than 5 stars is seriously trippin. I cannot begin to express how beautiful our meal was- there was so much attention to every aspect of the menu. I suggest having reservations, because we called the day before and they were booked for the next two days. Thankfully, they slid us in on a cancellation. There is love here. Our server, Lucy, was super attentive and lovely. She definitely went the extra mile. The chef, Matt, was cooking for the entire restaurant with the aid of only one sous chef and the place was packed. Still, our food came out in a timely manner and it was all cooked to perfection. Quite a feat, given there were people at literally every table. It's not quaint in capacity, either. I was so impressed. As for the food- everything was phenomenal. We ordered a bottle of the Bordeaux, the charcuterie, the beet salad, the petite filet, the mushroom ragu, the creme brûlée and the home made peanut butter ice cream. It was a lot but as we are serious food lovers and I love to cook, we wanted to try it all. Although the menu itself wasn't visionary (not sure there is room for that in SD) the execution was. The filet melted like butter but had an extraordinary crust. Perfectly seasoned. I ate every bite. The creme brûlée is my go to dish- it's so simple but you can tell a lot from how it's executed. The custard was phenomenal and the crust was the perfect thickness, shattered just the right way with q wack of the spoon. The house made peanut butter ice cream... jeez. My husband ordered it. Not something I would have chosen but good lord, I ate the whole thing. I was in pain, but it was some of the best ice cream I've ever had in my life. People on Yelp complaining about seating or pricing are out of touch. This is a very small crew running the restaurant. The chef is an artist and he is killing it. (He is even the one who returned my reservation phone call!) You read the list of what we ordered- it was an insane amount of food PLUS a bottle of old world wine- and if I hadn't tipped so so exuberantly we would have been out of there for under 200 bucks. WE DONT DESERVE YOU, JUNIPER! We are thankful for such an amazing, elevated, romantic date night. Honestly worth going to Rapid City for. Please do yourself a favor, check it out and tip them well. It's not the same place ever since moving to the new location. Perhaps they now have an influx of visitors from the hotel and rely less on locals - I don't know. What I do know is that service has taken a turn for the worse. The servers have been professional but unlike the old location, gone are when you felt welcome and they checked on you frequently. The food is still great, but seems like the menu has become static. The new location is stunning, no doubt. But I suppose I'm just missing the old Juniper where you saw the owners and could see them making your food in the kitchen. It's still a great place for good food. read more

We are out of town foodies and saw Juniper had high ratings. We were not disappointed. We started with Autumn Apple salad which was perfectly dressed with a light poppyseed dressing. Feta cheese, toasted pecans, dried cranberries, and apples served over perfectly cut romaine. Next was the broccoli cheddar soup which was delicate, popping with flavor and color as finely shredded carrots were an unexpected and delightful addition giving the soup added body. We shared two main dishes, the first was salmon served with a soy sauce reduction, flavorful long grain rice and asparagus. The fish was cooked to perfection. The second dish was a Chicken Florentine. Yum sums up this dish. Mushrooms in a cream sauce, snap peas and a cheesy risotto accompanied the tender chicken chunks. Angel cake with macerated strawberries ended the meal and was a 10 out of 10! The music was kept at the right volume so you can talk freely in a normal voice. Service was exceptional as well. My water was always full, wait staff were professional, attentive and friendly. This is a restaurant we will return to over and over. read more

Walking into Juniper leaves no doubt that you are in a neighborhood place. The waiters know many of the patrons by name. The menu is limited, but the food is beautifully prepared and presented. Salads were fresh and well dressed and the entrees were perfectly cooked. The porkchop was very thick, but done to a slightly pink medium+ just as advertised. Tender and juicy and delicious. The gluten free bread service was served warm with house made truffle butter. The entrees were all just stunning. The ragu of mushrooms over polenta was bright and delicious. On our travels to Mt. Rushmore we had dinner at this lovely restaurant. The food was delicious and the service excellent. We shared the Autumn salad and the homemade garlic red pepper butter was wonderful with the fresh bread. For entrees we enjoyed the honey roasted pork and the curry chicken thighs. So very good!! Don't pass up desert either. The blueberry lavender (homemade) ice cream was so flavorful as was the apple butter topped cheese cake. We were so looking forward to this given all the wonderful reviews. We made reservations for 7 and were seated immediately. Then the wait began...10 minutes for water, 20 minutes for wine, 20 more minutes for soup/salad and entree after 8:30. Just too long. The food was varied. The French Onion soup was top notch, Caesar salad ok, but not special. My shrimp and grits appetizer was difficult at best. Whole shrimp with head, shell and tail sitting in wet sweet grits were impossible to peel. I had to ask for a wet cloth to clean up so I could eat them. The chicken thigh dish was yummy. My beet salad too cheesy on the bottom, tho served beautifully. All in all we were relieved when we could finally pay and leave. They needed more help everywhere, and somehow the dishes, while elegant, often seemed to miss their mark. They had a brisk business, but little turnover,and room became less crowded, but service still interminable. We hope this night was a fluke. read more

Just had an amazing dining experience at Juniper recommended by a man I meet on my flight to RAP. The place has a casual atmosphere but the food is it's star. It started with our salads. I had the Juniper Salad & my friend had the Beet salad. Both were excellent. My Pork Tenderloin with mushrooms was perfectly cooked accompanied by mashed potatoes & sautéed Brussel Sprouts. My friend had Bacon Wrapped Chicken stuffed with spinach on a bed of rice with broccolini. We split the Raspberry Crumble topped w/fresh raspberry & whipped cream. Dallas, our server, was very attentive stopping by our table several times & the others around us to make we all had what we needed.
