I enjoy both Kathmandu and Momo House, which are owned by the same people, but this review is focused on Kathmandu. It's located downtown, so parking can be hit or miss, but I've never had to park too far away. Inside, the atmosphere is cozy and relaxed--you don't feel like you have to dress up to eat here. Casual is the way to go, but if you want to be a little fancy, that works too. The service is always friendly and welcoming. The staff is very attentive, making sure you have everything you need and regularly refilling water glasses. The food is delicious, served hot, and comes out quickly. I've never had any complaints, and it's easily one of my top places to eat in town. read more

I have Indian friends, so I get really good home cooked items all the time. Our friends don't skimp on spice and heat, so I'm always surprised ending up in an Indian place where spice and heat is used cautiously. We tried their Tikka masala and korma and the korma was hands down the better dish of the two. Tikka masala could have used more spice and heat (even though we ordered spicy, I guess they are cautious to not scare people away). The buttery garlic naan was delicious. I tried KB during a recent visit to rapid city and was very impressed. All the dishes we ordered were great, esp the mango chicken and saag paneer. The hostess preemptively asked for our spice tolerance (mild-medium-hot) which was appreciated. The servings are more than decent, and everything tasted unique (not the same curry in all meat dishes like some restaurants), flavorful and freshly prepared; even the naan platter was yummy. Thanks to Kathmandu, I can now say - as a native born Floridian - that the first time I ever tried FLORIDA alligator was at an Indian/Nepalese restaurant in South Dakota - and it was great! Both the dish itself (Alligator Tikka Masala) and the overall experience. Seriously, I might be one of few (if not the only person) people who can make such a claim and for that unique privilege and experience, I'd recommend them. The other dishes are great too! Really delicious Indian/Nepali restaurant in Downtown Rapid City. The staff was very friendly and patient! I went with my family, which included my niece and nephew. We were given a high chair and a takeout-like cup for the toddler to drink water (rather than the adult water glasses). We ordered several dishes: Goat Curry, Mango Chicken, Butter Chicken, Momos, and Naan Bread basket (comes with Plain, Garlic, and cheese Naan). Personally my favorite is the garlic naan but the Plain and Cheese was great for the kids to snack on. The Momos were delicious too- highly recommend! It isn't spicy, and it's served with Nepalese chutney if you want to add more flavor and dip the momo in it. Given we had a lot of curry dishes, we were served one big bowl of rice. The portions are large, and we had leftovers to bring home after feeling stuffed after our meal. A pleasant dining experience, and I'd definitely come back. read more

What a great discovery! I love Indian and Nepali food and was pleasantly surprised to have such a great meal in Rapid City. This restaurant is owned and operated by nice people originally from Nepal, but they also offer a comprehensive menu of Indian standards. It was a good sign that the place was full and we had to wait for a table. But it was worth it. For a starter we had the tandoori mushrooms, something I had never tried before. It was superb: large and juicy mushroom with just a kiss of spice that allowed their natural mushroom flavor to shine through. We followed this with several vegetarian dishes including matar paneer, vegetable curry, and naan. The vegetables were all fresh (not canned or frozen as some places serve), and the sauces were sublime. The naan was fresh and very hot, just perfect. The restaurant is casual not comfy, with a good vibe to math the friendly service. KB offers a good selection of beers, including a few good ones from India. If you are in Rapid City and need a break from the usual meat & potatoes, Kathmandu Bistro is a great option. read more

Food: we ordered the naan bread basket which came with 12 pieces total: 4 cheese, 4 plain, and 4 garlic. The cheese was 100% the best out of the three choices. For dinner we split butter chicken which is served with rice. We ordered it mild. This is where the 4 star review comes in; the butter chicken was extremely bland. Like almost didn't have a flavor at all. I've always ordered my Indian food mild since I'm a spice wimp and have never had it prepared so blandly. It's almost like mild meant no seasoning at all. I found this Nepalese restaurant during a road trip passing through Rapid City! It's a spacious restaurant filled with posters and facts about Kathmandu and Nepal. The restaurant was a bit too dim. I think they were going for a dim, warm ambiance, but I felt like it didn't work out. We came in for dinner and while there was no line and not that many people, the wait for the food was very long. I think it was because one of the dishes we ordered, the Tandoori Lamb Rack, was made-to-order. Kathmandu Momo Dumpling w/ Nepalese Chutney (4/5): I have had a lot of Chinese dumplings & Japanese gyozas & Korean mandus in my life, but it was my first having a Nepalese momo. I feel like this momo dish in particular was not too different from your typical Chinese dumpling if we're just talking about the dumpling itself. However, the momos also came with this sour/spicy powder sprinkled on top with a wonderful cuthney dipping sauce, which is the differentiating point from your typical Chinese dumpling. I've never had momos before this, so I'm unsure if this is how it's typically served, and don't have a reference point. It was perfectly fried and paired deliciously with the chutney. I'm just taking away 1 point since the actual dumpling was not very stand-out in flavor. It's still very yummy though. Tandoori (Clay Oven-Roasted) Lamb Rack in Spiced Yogurt w/ Rice & Roti (5/5): If anything, this clay-oven roasted lamb rack was most definitely worth the wait. I love lamb, and I felt like this lamb rack was roasted to perfection. There was no weird lamb odor, and it was seasoned perfectly. There was a spicy heat that tasted so delicious with the lamb and yogurt base. The sauce also doubled as a delicious dip for the roti as well. We came to this place on Friday night and there was a 20 min wait. The place smells delicious and flocking with people. We ordered some veggie pakoras to start with some chai. They have chai already pre-made in a big jar and pour out when the customer asks. The pakoras were good though not sure why they weren't warm enough if they were made fresh. For entrees we ordered paneer tikka masala, mixed veggie curry, and tadka daal. These tasted ok. I mean they are exceptional if you consider finding Indian food in South Dakota. Paneer tikka masala is usually not this curry, this was too liquid, same with mixed veg, though this could be Nepalese take on Indian dishes too. Assuring me that it wasn't a mid-west heat profile, I cut back to just Hot vs Spicy. Absolutely delicious Indian food, a super pleasant surprise in a small town like Rapid City! We started off our meal with the daal soup and samosa they were both excellent! The Daal was very flavorful and the samosa was super crispy! Next came out the naan, Baigan Bharta and Bhendi Masala. This was my first time trying Bhendi Masala and I really loved it! No wait if you get in before 6:30pm on a weeknight, but by the end of our meal there were no tables left and people were waiting outside as there is only a small waiting area. The food definitely lives up to expectations. The garlic naan is a must and paired well with the chicken tikka masala, while the shrimp biryani was full of flavor and spices.
