Decent restaurant serving up meat and fish. It felt old but pretty cool in there. I had a couple of complimentary house beers bc I was staying at a hotel nearby that had some sort of deal with the restaurant. I'm not a beer drinker but whatever beer it was, I thought it was pretty tasty. I had gout recently so I couldn't eat meat that nite. So I had some sort of fish for dinner. It was ok. Not the freshest tasting fish, but it wasn't bad either. My gf had prime rib. I had 1 bite of that. It was bloody and delicious! Skip the italian soda drinks. They weren't all that. The waitress was nice. We wanted some sorbet for desert that wasn't on the menu and she brought it out for us anyways. That was unexpected and really nice! Extra tip for her! read more

My culinary experiences in the midwest weren't too great, but this place was one of the better dining options in Custer. Me and Dad were staying in Custer as a central location to go check out Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse and all the beautiful National Parks in the area. I'd already struck out twice on restaurants, so I let Dad pick our last meal in Custer. The Captain's Table reminded me a lot of my Grandmother's house in Colorado. She's no longer with us, but it sure looks like a lot of her interior decorating ended up here! Very old school. Warm. Inviting. Kitsch. When we first got there, they sat us in the bar, but it wasn't very comfortable and smelled a little stuffy. They graciously relocated us to a table. The meal started off with some rolls. Just typical grocery store rolls. Not fresh baked or anything. I got a buffalo burger which was pretty good, but could have used a little seasoning. It came with a baked potato that was nicely baked instead of just microwaved like the other places in town. Strangely enough, between courses, they gave us little tiny servings of lemon sorbet. Random! Well, at least for this place it seemed random. Dad got trout which was frozen, but good. He keeps wondering why there's no fresh trout anywhere and I keep wondering why I can't get good red meat in the middle of cattle country? Our waitress was super nice, funny, and attentive. We came here after seeing Mount Rushmore and the food was wonderful! I got the 8 oz steak with a loaded baked potato and my partner got the French dipper with steak fries and we loved it! The waitress was what really made the restaurant amazing, Carla. She was super sweet and very knowledgeable about the restaurant/menu, very nice and accompanying! We had a lot of fun, and we got a prime sandwich to go, but it was a bit salty. Overall great experience! Would totally go back if I could. read more

I was perusing the restaurants in Custer, SD here on Yelp, and I realized there's a Quizno's. That would have been better than what we consumed at the Captain's Table. The night before doing Crazy Horse's annual Volksmarch, I dined here with my fiancee, father, and brother, for my birthday. The waitress was an old grouch. Knowing we were tourists, she didn't bother with pleasantries. She asked what we wanted to drink, and my father said he wanted water. Instead of moving on to the next person, she immediately walked away from the table to retrieve the water, while the rest of us looked on with confusion. When ordering our meals, my fiancee made a comment about me being the "birthday girl," and she said nothing, and we certainly didn't get a free dessert, or anything. Our food was "meh." Three of us had the super-expensive chopped steak (which was actually the cheapest meat entree on the menu) and it didn't at all taste like steak, but instead unseasoned hamburger patty. I insisted on drenching mine with A1. My fiancee had the buffalo burger -- also unseasoned -- and it came without any cheese. My baked potato was nothing special, and the rolls were, indeed, the standard, flavorless, grocery-store variety. read more

The waitress was green and had no clue what she was doing she even did not go over their specials. Next the clam chowder soup was more like a potato soup. My wife ordered a captain salad and she told her no ice berg lettuce and guess what the salad was a disguise with icebergs lettuce and few romaine lettuce in top. This place needs a ton of improvement in all areas. The food is mediocre at best, actually no wait it's just bad. $18 for a Caesar salad is extremely overpriced for a small chicken breast on a bed of lettuce. The group I was with was a pain and I felt bad for the waitresses but that's really not an excuse for terrible food. I ordered the steak tips with mashed potatoes, it came with three pieces of asparagus and a meager portion of some cheap cut of crappy beef marinated in Worcestershire sauce. Food was nothing what was advertised. Asked for the prime rib to be cooked medium rare and there was no red in sight and dry as can be besides sitting in a pond of juice. Fish and chips were frozen fish sticks. Our biggest issue was when we got the bill we never got an itemized receipt. The bill looked a lot higher than what we ordered and when I asked the waitress for a itemized receipt she said she didn't think we wanted one and said it was to late for her to do it now which I know is a lie cause at that point I didn't sign the receipt yet and I own a restaurant and know you could have printed it easily (very shady) thank God my wife saw on the menu that they put the tip on automatically which the waitress never explained after given us just the receipt to sign that on the bottom had tip amounts on it. She was very nervous and made simple mistakes the whole night. I wasn't born yesterday and can tell very easily when someone is trying to pull a fast one. Atmosphere was 1990, our server (Sam) was very good, cocktails before dinner were inexpensive and just right, I had clam chowder and it was good, she had roasted red pepper soup and said it was outstanding, we both had prime rib cooked medium rare and it was perfect. We had a reservation for a group of about 15. I was honestly shocked they could support us.....well they couldn't, they just didn't tell us. We sat down at least 45 mins after our reservation time. No worries, we are still in a good mood just enjoying each other's company. Then the bombshell, "we are on a limited menu" sandwiches and some appetizers, that would have been nice to know while we were standing at the bar talking about the specials. We will get over it, we order off the limited menu and drive on. Another 30+ mins go by, food starts trickling out, we were getting worn out now but let's just eat and leave. Then my 76 year old father tried to pay with American Express and we find out they don't take American Express. He asks to see a manager and he said they are required to post a sign that says they don't accept AMEX. The manager came out and fairly rudely said that is not the law (I'm not sure what the law is, at this point I want to pay and go) and that if he didn't want to pay she will just call the cops. Reading other reviews it sounds like par for the course when customers are not satisfied. Then my dad asked to see where it is posted that gratuity is included? (He is known for his over tipping actually) Now the manager is pissed and comes back and throws the menu down in front of him and points at it, "right there" and proceeded to imply like we couldn't afford our crappy meal. I tried to give the manager the benefit of the doubt but she was confrontational from the start. It's a shame because we were so committed to having a good time that we actually found the silver lining by making AMEX jokes for the rest of the week and it's a story we will probably tell forever. All and all I'm glad we went, it was better than Dick's Last Resort if you've ever been there, the difference is you expect to be insulted when you go there. Thanks for the experience Captain's. A mixed experience this dinner, from outstanding prime rib, tender and moist, on a really ho-hum bun for french dip, adequate artichoke dip with tired tortilla chips, so-so fries, and not so good clam chowder. Horrible just horrible. My wife, son and I made the worst decision to eat here. They won't busy at all they only had 3 tables. My wife and I ordered prime rib the exact same medium rare and our son a cheeseburger. We told our server to worry about our 1 1/2 year old sons food first so we don't have to worry about a freak out. 25 to 30 minutes later the prime rib came out first. Not the cheeseburger. My wife's food came out still mooing and mine came out well done. 5 minutes after our food came out my sons burger came out dry as jerky. Poor choice for a South Dakota steak house. Asked for onion rings......waitress said they didn't have them. Asked for toast with my sirloin steak and the waitress said they only had bread if you wanted to buy the $4 bread plate.... no toast! Asked for hash browns and the waitress said they didn't have them available only a baked potato. Just not a good choice for an evening meal. Went with a group tonight. We thought the food was excellent. I had the 8 oz. prime rib, my husband had the fettuccine marinara. The meat was cooked perfectly, and my side salad was fresh. Gave this place a 2 star just because our server was good but my issue was with the food, actually mine was good but my husband and father in law both ordered the prime rib and they were out so one got the Top Sirloin while the other got a Ribeye blackened. My husband ordered his ribeye medium with crab legs and when the steak came out it was still mooing and no crab legs were with it. My father in laws sirloin was to be medium well and it came out more medium but he ate his. My husband sent his steak back to have it cooked more then the crab legs came out but there was no butter. The steak came back and it was still undercooked so my husband said never mind. The butter for his crab legs came out much later and by then his crab was cold so he pushed it all away. When we were asked we told the bartender we weren't happy with his meal and we got a whopping $6 off the meal....he hardly ate his dinner so when our server took our CC to be processed we told her that was not good enough so she went back and ran the card and we noticed that another $4 was taken off, really? He didn't eat his $35 meal and all they took off was $10? Shameful and we won't go back next time we're in town. read more

We were in Custer a week ago and stopped in for dinner. Waitress was friendly and was obviously busy but efficient. I had prime rib and my wife had a chicken breast with crab meat and asparagus. Prime rib was perfect and very tender. Loved that is came in the au jus as that kept it warm. My wife said her dish was the best she has had in years. Chicken was juicy and crab meat delicious. This was, quite possibly, the WORST meal my husband and I have ever had. The Prime Rib was NOT aged, seasoned, or cut properly. No horseradish with it. I ordered a side of deep fried "huge" shrimp with my meat. They were cold, over battered, over cooked and once again no sauce for them. My husband ordered the roasted baby red potatoes. They were little Yukon Golds with no sauce or seasoning of any kind. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Bad food and WAY over priced. read more

OK, I try to be kind and positive when possible, so I will start with the positives. The drink I ordered Caribbean punch was really good. The bartender seemed like a very nice man even if he didn't know much about their menu. And that is all I can say positive about this restaurant. My husband ordered fried walleye and I ordered a ribeye steak. The ribeye steak was $26, that's not a problem if it's a good steak. My steak was terrible. I ordered medium it was rare which again would not even be a problem if it was a good steak. The steak was all fat and gristle it was terrible. It was like something you would expect at a cheap buffet. My husband's walleye came in tiny overcooked chunks. The sides were no better the potatoes were undercooked I ordered a side of pepper jack mac & cheese. The sauce was tasty but watery the Panko crumbs on the top weren't toasted they were just put on the top. The interior of this place if you go by the website, gives the impression it is more upscale. It is anything but, plastic, faux leather on the tables, nothing of interest or aesthetically pleasing nature at all. Give this place a hard pass. read more

Good restaurant with full bar. Excellent martini drinks. Service was excellent -- our waitress was on the spot when we needed her and food was delivered expeditiously. Food was good but not great. My trout was somewhat dry. The decor is somewhat dated, and the booths not firmly affixed to the floor. The man in the booth behind me continually squirmed and made my side of the booth move. Staying near Mt Rushmore, and this restaurant was recommended by the staff at the hotel. It did not disappoint. We got complementary adult beverages from a coupon from the hotel. I had the buffalo ribeye, medium rare, which came out just right. The wife got the cod, which was also good. The wait staff was on time, brought us sorbets between courses to cleanse, and even brought our table more sorbet for dessert. Overall, a worthwhile family dining experience. read more

I'm shocked that this place doesn't have 5 stars. It had been a struggle to find a good place to eat in Custer (for dinner) and this one stole the show. Our group of five was greeted by an extremely friendly hostess who seated us right away. The table/table cloth was clean, silverware didn't have water stains on it and our beverages were served in actual glassware! I had the prime rib and it was perfect! The cheddar garlic mash was wonderful. Another person in our party had the chopped sirloin. Wonderful. Done perfectly. We will be back. Thanks for the experience! read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. We returned to Custer tonight from a day out and about in the Hills and did not realize that just about every place closes at 8 PM. We looked around on Google and the Captains Table said they were open till 9 PM. So since that was the only place that was open we headed there. When we arrived the sign said they close at 8:30 PM. Apparently they can not be bothered to update their hours on Google. Since they were closing in 15 minutes we decided to take food Togo back to our hotel. Typically we are not the type to walk in that close to closing, but since they were the last place that was open, we did not have much choice. When we walked in a man walked by us at the counter, we assumed that he was the manager, he looked at us and exclaimed "REALLY, I AM NEVER GETTING OUT OF HERE". Never before have we been treated that rudely, we left immediately and went to the grocery store and cooked microwave meals in our hotel room. Not sure how their food is, but their customer service is terrible. We were afraid that if we stayed they would spit in our food. read more

2nd visit so time to review them. We both had the prime rib sandwich tonight & food was excellent. Very tender, flavorful and the bread is unique. Our server, Colleen was attentive but not bothersome and provided great suggestions. I had a Black Tooth Amber which was more like a red or brown - highly recommend. The food is good, but very overpriced for what they charge. I added crab legs to my dinner, which they forgot. When they finally came they were ice cold and we sent them back and just had them taken off our order. I can recommend the stuffed mushrooms and the prime rib, but I don't think I will go back. read more

There were lots of cars in the parking lot which is usually a good sign when choosing a restaurant. In this case it was a bit of a red herring. I sort of feel bad for even writing a review on the Captain's Table. I mean, it's my fault for going to a "seafood" restaurant in the Black Hills. I know better. But they had some high points. The hot artichoke dip, Italian sodas, and the buffalo are all really good. I was shocked when I had a frozen french fry. I mean, a restaurant like that should make them fresh. Made me wonder if the mashers were from a box..they sort of looked like it. Basically, if you are a foodie..you'll be disappointed. But if you are really hungry and eat red meat, you'll probably be happy. read more
