This is a great bar/ restaurant in Keystone, SD. We went to this restaurant 2 times on this trip. First time was right after we arrived for our vacation and the second time was for my daughters 17th birthday. Food is very good and have a wide variety of a menu from pasta, steak, burgers and seafood. I brought a cake and candles in to celebrate my daughters birthday and the servers took it into the kitchen for me and brought the cake out with candles lit at the end of the meal as we all sang happy birthday with the severs and the majority of the patrons in the restaurant were singing! Hibiscus Elderflower drink was great, lemon drop martini not so much. Had to tip two different waitresses - one for dinner and the other for drinks. Wide array of drinks so a nice place for variety. Went there on an off season visit , our cocktail waitress Lynn should brush up on customer service. Our friend ordered a drink off the online menu and was rudely told that thaw had no idea where we got that menu. And preceded to continue making excuses about the menu and provoking our friend each time she came to the table. She also gave us our check before serving our drinks and forgot one of the drinks again followed by excuses about how she didn't forget the drink but it was obvious that she did. No apologies just rude . We are from the east coast and used to getting cocktails before the drinks are served . The cocktails were also terrible my vesper martini obviously had bottom shelf vodka for 9.00 and my husbands Manhattan came in a martini glass? I wouldn't waste money on the cocktails. Embarrassed and disappointed. The philosophy here is that the customer is NOT always right-- -even when the sign says I keep the glass -the waitress doesn't clarify there are two different Bloody Marys -the waitress doesn't ask which I want -the manager is rude and doesn't make it right--Not even for a stupid glass! -the manager preferred being RIGHT even though she made the customer (me) feel wrong. -the manager demonstrated poor management and people skills. WHO WOULD KNOW when you order a Bloody Mary at The Red Garter Saloon that it IS NOT A Red Garter Bloody Mary!? The waitress didn't ask. The manager didn't make it right. My husband and I stopped for dinner during our 3 days in Keystone. What could have been a nice evening was unacceptable. My husband tried to order a Top Shelf Margarita but our server could not understand that we wanted to know the Tequila choices. After a couple of trips back and forth to the bartender, my husband choose one. Then we also wanted to do a flight of the local Whiskeys. Not only did the server not understand our request but he didn't know the products. After finally overcoming that hurdle he brought out my margarita and the flight but no margarita for my husband...and it was well after the food came out. There was no recognition of an error or an apology. Needless to say, the dinner did not go as we expected. (On top of that, and I know the food it separate, but it was cool...sure not hot.). We stopped in the bar area for a drink about 5pm on 6/8/19. "Marybeth" was our server. When we sat down several tables next to us were eating off the full menu, we decided we were hungry, so we asked for menus when we ordered our cocktails. Marybeth told us "oh, I don't think we are serving food in here anymore, I think the hosts want people to order dinner on the restaurant side from now on, but I'll check". It was 5pm on a Saturday, so I could understand that. 10 minutes later she came back with our drinks and no menus. "Oh sorry, I meant to check on menus for you". Ok....I get it, she's busy. She was obviously "in the weeds" a bit. My wife and I worked in the restaurant industry as servers and trainers for several years. Plus we were on vacation, so no rush. 10 more minutes went by and she made it back to tell us that in fact they were NOT serving food in the bar area anymore. "Fair enough," we thought, we'll just tab out and hit another spot. Thanks for the (crappy) Whiskey and poorly-made cosmo. That's neither here nor there. Here's the kicker: in the next 15 minutes while we were waiting on her to finally bring us the check, AT LEAST 3 tables were sat in the immediate vicinity of our table, sent by the HOST STAND with FULL DINNER menus and their very own server from the dining room. After FINALLY getting Marybeth to cash us out (she walked by our table 3 times with no eye contact or interaction), I went up to the host stand and asked for a manager. When I asked the "manager" (they looked like a high school kid) why we weren't able to eat in the bar area, they said "oh, Well Marybeth asked me for some menus but I looked around and couldn't find anyone". We were one of 5 tables in the bar and I was a 250 lb guy in a big red hoodie looking hungry and annoyed. I think it's just a case of a bad server, inept front-of-house training early on in the tourist season. We walked into this saloon on a Saturday afternoon in June and there was noone else in there. The women bartender was super rude and acted like we were annoying her. We asked for a cocktail list and she turned the menu around and said she couldn't put fruit in the drinks with fruit because of Covid. Ok no problem we can put our own fruit in the drinks. The drinks were sweet and very weak. I don't know if there was liquor in our drinks at all. There is not a lot going on in early May in Keystone, so choices are limited. We popped into this place after a long day on the road. The bar has a cool look. There were four patrons sitting at the bar when we walked in and the rest of the place was empty (around 5:00 p.m.) The bartender took our order and delivered our drinks, but then disappeared and it was a good 15 minutes before she came back to see if we wanted another drink. If I return to Mt. Rushmore again, I might pop in for a drink here, but I would more than likely stay in another town as Keystone is a dud! read more

Food was just ok, service was slow and not very good. The waitress couldn't take bar orders so we had to wait for another sub-par service person to take that order who only returned for refills after we requested twice . My "filet mignon" (pretty sure it was not that cut!!) was ordered medium and served basically raw and required a visit back to the kitchen, the onion straws were cut up bad onion rings and the my husbands prime rib was just ok. They clearly have the tourist trap restaurant mentality that since the customer is unlikely to be returning there is no need to impress. read more

Okay, so I recently did a cross-country drive and did a little sight-seeing to keep things interesting. Well, I had never seen Mount Rushmore so since it was on the way, I added to my agenda. Well, I went, saw, and it was a rock with faces carved in it. What can I say? Anyway, afterwards I was hungry so I decided to take in some local cuisine. I found the Red Garter Saloon on the way back to the highway from Mount Rushmore tucked in a little tourist area with a bunch of gift shops. I thought it looked authentic enough for the "wild west" and I scored parking right out front so I said, "what the heck?". Before I was even seated at my table, i was bum-rushed by a bar maid that was more dressed to go to the Mercury (goth club in seattle) than that of a Wild West Saloon bar maid. I mean, I didn't think they had had the knee-high, steel-toed Grip Fast boots back in the days of Cowboys and Indians. Well, anyway, my wardrobe mistake that I can overlook if the food is grubbin' (well, obviously if I'm pointing out that flaw, then the food wasn't that grubbin'). I found "buffalo Burger" on the menu and with knowledge that there was a local Buffalo ranch, I figured "how can I go wrong with fresh buffalo?". If it wasn't completely dried out out, this probably would have been a four or five star review but that wasn't the case. Everything possible was wrong with that "burger" (a term I'm using loosely here) and had it not been for the mashed potatoes and gravy that came with it, this would have been a one star review. The mashed potatoes and gravy were the only saving grace to the whole experience and the only reason I would remotely mention the place to anyone going to be in the area. I'm really sure if it would really be worth stopping there for that though since there are a ton of other places in the area and that I'm sure at least one of them has a delicious, locally-raised buffalo burger. read more
