The cupcake itself was nothing to write home about. Inbetween the cupcake and the frosting was a thin layer of ganache. The price point for two cupcakes was a bit on the expensive side. Our bill for two cupcakes and 2 bagels was $14. Had we split a piece of cake (which was rather large) then we would have saved a bit of money. A piece of cake ran $6. No Wi-Fi means you can always get a table but i usually take my cake home to smear the abundant amounts of frosting on my face so I have plenty of reason to lick myself. I visit every now and then for a croissant or some dessert. The people behind the counter seem nice and I haven't been disappointed with anything I've ordered so far. They do seem to take a long time to prepare drinks. I order food, they cook it, and I leave before any of the people already waiting before I arrived are served their drinks. But maybe they are worth it? I was once disappointed to show up ten minutes after opening hours to find them only just unlocking the place, meaning they were nowhere near ready to serve guests. I went to a nearby deli instead. That's a textbook way to lose customers and $$. There is a good variety of cakes to choose from and I tried the chocolate, and it was very good. I don't know that I would say it's the best though I have not had other chocolate cakes in Brooklyn, but it's definitely not the best cake I've ever had. But it is good. There is a good variety of espresso beverages, as well. There is no wifi, so make sure if/when you go, you know that and have someone to talk to or something to read. Unexpectedly excellent! I stopped by here for breakfast and it was great. So great that I felt compelled to write a review. I ordered a latte, a bagel, and some baked goods and everything tasted amazing. I'm usually kind of picky about my coffee because more often than not it doesn't come out right, but the coffee was my favorite thing I ordered. Cute place with a decent seating selection, nice service, and welcoming vibes. Some outlets, so it's good for studying when it's not crowded. I had the award winning Brooklyn Blackout chocolate cake. It was good, but not life changing. The cake itself had a surprisingly light and spongy texture, while the icing and chocolate filling were pretty sweet and just a little gritty with icing sugar. Given the name and award I was expecting something a little denser, darker in flavor, and richer. Still tasty though. i had no plans to go into bake shop; however, after walking around brooklyn on a very cold and windy day, my friend and i were just looking for a place to sit and warm up, and bake shop just happened to be right there with a sign claiming "voted best chocolate cake in the usa by food and wine magazine". what a bold claim.... the place was relatively crowded for the afternoon, and the menu had a bunch of vegan options as well as other creative baked goods; however, my friend and i were here to see whether this chocolate cake lived up to its title. however, when we went to order, they said that the cake was still being iced and that it would be about 5 minutes till it would be ready. the cake, in reality, took about 20 minutes to be iced, which was kinda ridiculous as it looked like it was already finished; however, we were grateful to just wait and chill in the space to warm up and absorb some sunshine from the windows. i really do like how the place is decorated because im a stereotypical plant and purple light lover, so honestly pretty nice wait even if it felt unjustified. now onto the brooklyn blackout cake. one slice was seven dollars, which i thought was very steep despite its large size considering it was just a standard three tier chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. the cake itself was astoundingly disappointing as the chocolate tasted artificial, the crumb was dry, and the frosting was way too sweet. to me, it tasted worse than publix (shout out to georgia and florida ppl) chocolate cake, which is eight dollars for a WHOLE delicious and satisfying cake. although the vibes of the cafe are really nice, i would not recommend anyone to go to bake shop for its chocolate cake unless you're prepared for mediocrity. read more

My friend and I stopped here because we were in the area. It was a nice day out so their doors were open. We could smell the baked goods from the street. We absolutely loved the black out chocolate cake, so we decided to return the day we were leaving the city and heading towards the airport. Rachel was absolutely amazing. I've lived a few blocks away from this place for almost a year, and can't believe I haven't been in before! Their vegan selections are amazing, first of all. Actual interesting flavors, like matcha cookies and a variety of muffins. I got a slice of the vegan lemon pound cake, and oh my god. They definitely don't cut corners on the vegan baked goods. Besides that, the atmosphere was amazing. It reminded me of one of those perfect little coffee shops you come across in small towns. Lots of tables I bet would be great for a coffee date, and so many plants in the space--I think they actually sell the plants, too! The people at the counter were friendly; I'll admit I was a little too dazzled by the pastry case to get their names, though. I haven't tried their coffee yet, but I'll definitely be back soon to get that and one of those amazing-looking vegan blueberry muffins I saw. Wow how do I begin? Let's start with I live down the street from this place and was super excited there was a coffee place so close. I've gone twice now, both time the girls working have not only taken their time in making the drinks, but also lacked an overall level of customer service that should come with running a business. The most recent experience I was there with my girlfriend grabbing coffee, at night, before heading to the L train to head to work. We stood behind a couple that we thought was ordering but apparently was having a nice 5 minute + conversation with the girl at the counter. I must've missed the memo that it was a socializing event. After the girl at the counter decided to ask them what they wanted to order, they ordered and it was finally our turn. We order our drinks and step off to the side. Then another customer comes in and engages in a conversation with both of the girls working. The couple who had ordered got their order and then we patiently waited as both girls working proceeded to talk with the customer who had walked in. At least 5 minutes goes by and they hadn't even started our drinks. We had to physically walk up and ask if our drinks were going to be ready soon and both of the girls had already forgotten that we had ordered our drinks and that they didn't make them. We watched as 3 separate customers got their orders before us. Overall it was probably about 15-20 minutes before getting our drinks, which apparently is rocket science at a coffee shop. Definitely not going again, we love supporting local businesses but seriously get it together. read more
