Burmese noodle salad
Yingbo W.

My bf is from the Bay Area and misses the Burmese food from there. We got the tea leaf salad and Burmese Noodle Salad and were very happy with it. Bf also ordered a chicken biryani and while it had south East Asian flavors and not like a strictly Indian biryani he enjoyed it. The noodle salad reminded me of what my childhood Burmese friend's mom used to make at home. I have not had authentic Burmese food for over 25 years and this was a welcome reintroduction to Burmese food! I didn't like the weird texture of the fried burmese tofu, tasted mushy like potato patties, and the green Pandan coconut milk dessert was just okay. Over all the quality of the stable foods and service was great and food tasted homemade, made with love! The owners were very nice and allowed us to dine in with our well behaved dogs even though the place was indoors. We called ahead. They even offered our dogs water although we declined because the dogs tend to knock bowls over. The place was not busy at all on a Sunday night. The parking lot outside had a bunch of 30 min parking only spots on a Sunday but we parked there for an hour and it was fine. I have yet to try Jasmine Market in Culver City, heard that is good as well but this place is pretty authentic and solid if you're craving Burmese!

I was in the mood for Burmese tea leaf salad, and with timing on my side (I had to take my Mom to an appointment a couple of miles away) THIS was the place! Granted, it's the only one I found close enough... We came through an hour into opening so I didn't fret about a wait to get seated. It was empty when we walked in. That was a good thing because as first timers, we knew we were gonna take a minute before we decide what to get. What I do know is we were gonna go for the tea leaf salad and the mohinga. So, Mom is a pork fiend and with two different (albeit similar) types they offered, we decided to get both. (She couldn't make up her mind!) We also went for the egg rolls to start. We placed our orders up front and had our choice of seating. Interesting enough, on one corner, they have an arts and gems area - sorta like a makeshift mini-jewelry kiosk. There was nothing in 'em, though... EGG ROLLS: Made to order HOT. Crispy and crunchy delicious. The filling was almost hearty. I don't even think I even bothered with the dip, they were good on their own! TEA LEAF SALAD: We aren't fans of jalapeños, so I'm glad they didn't didn't mix it in - much easier to take it all out at once. (Gotta make a mental note to have it omitted next time.) I've had my share of this from plenty of places. The one here, like the rest, had that similar essence, aroma, taste and texture. However, I felt there's something missing from it. Don't get me wrong, it's delicious, but the umami wasn't as poppin' as I had hoped. I'd still recommend it, though! MOHINGA: This was on point! The flavor was rich and deep and really hearty! It's one of those soups or stews to have most especially on a cold rainy day. The pea crackers added a good texture. If there's anything to order at a Burmese spot, it's this! And the tea leaf salad! PORK BELLY STEW: The pork was cooked soft and tender. The broth had a lot of flavor and depth. The seasonings and spices they used are well-balanced! BRAISED PORK BELLY: Prepped similar as the pork belly stew, the flavors are kinda similar but the sour mustard leaves and the Chinese 5 spice altered the overall taste. This too was prepped well. FOOD: 4. SERVICE: 4. Staff was friendly and patient and service with a smile is always a plus, but had to knock a star down for one reason: all our food came out all at once, and it ended up filling up our small table. We barely had wiggle room for... well... anything, really. We would have much preferred to get the app, salad and soup and enjoy them first before getting our main courses. And really, there was no reason to rush our orders - we were the only ones there. Oh, and serving spoons and bowls would come in really handy. I hope they take note of that. VALUE: 4. PARKING: Shared with other businesses. There's a parking lot and underground parking available as well. If that's still an issue (most likely won't be - there's plenty of spots downstairs) there's also street parking. OVERALL: 4. The restaurant was more than half filled with customers when we neared the end of our experience, so they kinda have a following. We enjoyed our visit, I'll admit! It hit that Burmese-food-craving spot. Will make another stop should I find myself around here AND have that craving once again.

Nan Gyi Noodle w Chicken. great

Popped in to try it out, and thoroughly enjoyed the Nan Gyi Noodle, an Udon style noodle dish with a savory curry-ish sauce. Very good. Also had samosas, and they were for the most part average, but the dipping sauce was very good. Kinda sweet and savory at the same time.

Have you ever tried Burmese food? There is this spot that is really yummy. Come with me! Highlights of the menu: 1. Mango chicken rice and crispy vegetable eggroll 2. Burmese garlic noodles 3. Pickled cucumber with hot sauce on top 4. Crispy tofu, shrimp, and vegetables 5. Food from the rack: Instant rice vermicelli, dried chicken, dried shrimp They also have a little rack for Burmese local food and snacks. And their beautiful handcrafted arts.

Bagan Burmese Kitchen is a southeast Asian eatery in Los Angeles serving authentic Burmese meals from apps (paratha) and salads (tea leaf) to curries, noodles, and soups (e.g. coconut curry noodle soup). Cool fact: Bagan is an ancient city and a UNESCO world heritage site. AMBIANCE: Interior seating only with an outdated feel (acoustic ceiling tiles). SERVICE: Staff were friendly and helpful when I called for a late-night, close-to-closing, take-out order and pick up from the register. FOOD 5/5 Tea Leaf Salad (savory, spicy, crunchy, crisp, bright): A Burmese National Dish made with a savory fermented tea leaf and oil dressing with fresh red and green cabbage, crunchy/crispy roasted nuts, seeds, dry shrimp, diced tomato, spicy jalapeño slices, and a lime wedge for acidity. Salad craving satisfied! PARKING There's an ample one-direction of travel parking lot for patrons.

Service was great but I wish they had AC and better decor- they had jewelry store cabinets without anything in them for some reason. We enjoyed the food but the multitude of options made ordering confusing for a first timer; our server got us through fine though. Chicken curry paratha- 7/10. VERY flaky but also very greasy. I also expected the curry to be thicker than it was. Shan noodles- 7/10. A little too funky for my taste I really hope this place updates their menu and general vibes to make it more comfortable. I really want them to succeed so I'm bumping up my review to 4 stars instead of 3.

Burmese food in Silver Lake! Don't forget Yelp check-in offer! You order at the counter, but if they're not busy and want to eat in they can set up order at table. There is a discount if you order through their direct portal. There's some parking in front of the restaurant but there is ample free parking in the underground lot. The QR code at the table takes you to an online ordering portal that has photos for most of the food, but the paper menus have some. If you had other southeast Asian foods before like Thai you may see some familiar kinds of foods like coconut based curries, noodle and rice dishes, sweet rice desserts, as well as Burmese takes on fries and wings. Let the host know if you have allergies. They let us know what's in each dish. My first foray into Burmese food is the tea leaf salad which is hard to find at Asian marts. We had to ask Burmese friends to get us the ingredients. So we just had to order it here to see if our homemade interpretations match. It was tasty! It did come with dried shrimp and jalapeños which we haven't added before so it made a nice heat. We also got Burmese garlic noodle with tofu and coconut noodle soup with chicken. Be aware both are noodle heavy! Both are quite fragrant and flavorful. Great options! The coconut curry has a nutty sweet taste while the garlic noodles has a great garlic flavor lingering on your tongue with each bite. We came on a Sunday even and were the only guests but there was a steady stream of pick up orders and delivery drivers.

A9. Paratha W/Coconut Curry Dip
Janelle L.

Well hello Burmese food, nice to find you here in this little strip mall of Silver Lake. Seems like an interestingly ethnic find for this area. We were trying to go to Daybird but they close at 6:30 so we decided to give Bagan a little nibble. We ordered the cashier's favorite noodles, Si Chat Kyaut Swe, the garlic noodles and added pork. I asked if they made their own noodles (because in my experience a lot of places like this do), but they don't. There were a few pieces of pork added but could have used double the amount. The pork bits were chopped up roasted pork with crispy skin. YUM! If you know, you know. The second item we tried was the paratha with coconut curry. This thin layered bread is so good! I think it's thin pan fried dough, there was a tasty layer of grease dripping from the edges. We opted for the coconut curry dip (vs the beef or chicken) for the flavor. It was tasty, i could have easily dipped a couple more pieces to the paratha to into that sauce. If Daybird is closed again, I'd definitely eat here again and give a few more dishes a try. Parking after 7 pm was easy. I've been to this mall during the day, parking at that time is not fun.

Very chill spot, feels like a mom and pop place. Friendly service. I saw families, friends, and solo diners here. I used to go to silver lake spa, which is in the same plaza. Parking in the underground garage is free & usually fairly plentiful. A tea leaf salad is a Burmese food must. I felt it was too salty, as were most of the items. However, my friend loved all of it so maybe it's just me. My fav dish was the lamb curry - hard to go too salty on something like that! The meat wasn't too tough either. The noodle w/ curry chicken was good too... good balance with creamy curry in there. I enjoyed my Burmese grass jelly drink - pictured here with pandan added. If only we'd left room for dessert... I live close by so, next time! Btw it's the same restaurant as mala city dry pot, so don't get confused and just go on in! I need to try that next time too.

The food at Bagan was really delicious! We had some classic Burmese dishes such as the Tea Leaf Salad, Paratha with Coconut Curry, Mango Chicken, and the Nan Gyi Noodle. All of the food was super authentic. Moreover though, the owner here was incredibly kind and was so informative of everything in the menu and also considerate to check if anyone had eating restrictions. Outstanding food and outstanding service - there's nothing more you can ask for and we had a great meal here!

Crispy goat with Coconut Rice
Kimberly H.

First time having Burmese food and it was delicious, very flavorful! Mango salad- lots of flavor I've never had before and good spice level. Light and refreshing, paired well with coconut rice. Crispy goat- my husband loves goat and he said he can never find and restaurant that serves goat, lots of crispy garlic slices. Also paired well with coconut rice. Gyoza pork- very crispy and plump filling. Lychee drink and Burmese grass jelly was delicious too, very sweet but nice after the meal! Very friendly and nice service

S11. Fish Chowder Noodle Soup (Mohinga)
Alison T.

Running a few errands, I stopped by for a quick lunch. I'd only eaten Burmese food one other time, so by no means am I an expert, but the dishes were flavorful and filling. A couple of men were seated in the dining room when I arrived, and the woman behind the counter let me choose where I wanted to sit. I sat at a table near the window. I scanned a QR code for the menu and decided on Fish Chowder Noodle Soup, fries topped with chicken curry and a hot Burmese tea. The food was served hot, with the fries coming out shortly before the soup. I couldn't finish it all and took the leftovers home (the dishes were decent when reheated, but I'd recommend eating it fresh if possible). Parking is a little tight at tricky intersection. It's easiest to enter the lot from Beverly Boulevard coming from Koreatown toward Silverlake.

Must try Burmese restaurant. I had Shwe Taung noodle, a cup of sweet Indian tea and paratha with curry dip.
khine l.

I finally found a decent Burmese restaurant that I can proudly recommend to my friends. Since I grew up in Burma, people often ask me where they can go eat Burmese food in LA area. My answer was always the same, no comment. I ordered paratha with curry dip, Shwe Taung noodle and a cup of sweet Indian Tea. All dishes were very yummy.

I ordered from the lunch menu and got the tumeric chicken, with steamed vegetables and paid extra $7 to substitute for a papaya salad. I asked for #2 spice level but it was not spicy at all. Other co workers said they asked for medium but it was way too spicy. So it looks like their spicy levels are inconsistent. I'm not sure how this restaurant can justify the prices with the quality they are serving. Probably won't be back. Service was mediocre. Didn't offer to refill our waters. I ordered Pad Thai with tofu- I like to order peanut sauce on the side and the woman found it interesting and struck a non judgmental conversion about it. I could really tell she was genuinely curious. This was my favorite dish. It was good. I also ordered spicy fried rice with tofu and spicy panang curry with vegetables. I chose 4 out of a 6 for spicy and it was not spicy at all for me. The rice was fine, nothing extraordinary and nothing bad. The panang curry was yummy. I don't know if it's regional but it was very light in taste and light in thickness. BUT I enjoyed it for what it was. Felt like I had gotten home made chicken soup or something like that comforting and not overly processed. Maybe it's because I ordered it with no protein and just vegetables. I have written at least 2 glowing reviews of the restaurant in the past and wish this could be one of them, but it's not. Over the last 4-5 days I have tried no less than 2 dozen times to call the restaurant during proper business hours to order food for pick-up as I often do. The phone rang and rang to no avail. I live too far from the restaurant to just pop up and place an order so I rely on calling ahead. I have been a customer of this restaurant for at least the last 9 years and have almost never had the aforementioned experience. Though I do recall not being able to get a call through several times on one or two occasions in the relatively distant past. Today I was finally able to get a call through and began placing my order which includes shrimp. I ALWAYS request the tail (with shells) to be removed from the shrimp as I find it quite difficult to enjoy my meal if I'm constantly having to pick off shells with my hands. It's unsanitary and messy. Removing the tails from 15-20 shrimp prior to adding to an entree or soup should take no more than 60 seconds and that's if one is moving at a glacial pace. However, today I was told that the kitchen was too busy to honor my request. I assured the lady taking my order than I was a loyal customer and make this request will every order I place and it is always honored. She repeated her claim that the kitchen was too busy and refused to do it. I cancelled my order and ended the call. Now I usually order food from the restaurant 4-5 times a month and usually spend about $65 each time not including tip. That is approximately $325 per month of my hard earned money that I give to this restaurant in exchange for great food and service. I am appalled and quite upset that having been a loyal customer for almost a decade and spending as much money there as I do per month that they could at least honor my patronage by simply taking an additional 60 seconds in the kitchen to make my meal more enjoyable. Her refusal to do such a minuscule task has deeply soured my experience with Hoy-Ka not to mention the fact that I could not reach the restaurant for almost a week by phone for no apparent reason. I will not be going back to this restaurant until they rectify this situation.

Each time I've come the waitstaff has been super friendly, and the food amazing. So, when planning a little birthday lunch for my mom's 81st birthday, this was one of the first places I thought of. My mom lives in south LA and we live in the valley, so after picking her up, we wouldn't have to travel far to eat. Although we planned to arrive to the restaurant at 2, traffic was horrible and we arrived at 230pm. After looking for parking, I dropped the fam off at 2:40 so they could sit and look at the menu while I found parking. I get a text from my husband saying they closed at 3 so hurry. This was news to me, as I thought they closed at 5. I found parking and rushed in at 2:48, to see my family outside the restaurant. Perplexed, I went in to ask if we could still eat, as it wasn't yet 3pm. No wait staff came to the front to greet me, so I walked in a bit and asked the waiter if it was okay to eat. The waiter said we close in ten. I said I thought the website said you closed at 5. I must have read it wrong. I understand, but it's not 3 and we came a bit of a distance and it's my mom's 81st birthday. The waiter, whose name is Jack, offered to ask the kitchen if they would still make food. I said yes please would you ask? While Jack was asking, another waiter asked me if I had been helped. I told him yes, that Jack was asking the kitchen if we could still have lunch. This waiter says, we're closing in 10. I'd like to have lunch too. And walks away. Yes, with shade. Jack returns and says it's fine as long as we can order within a few minutes of getting the menu. I say great and we all come in. The 2nd waiter takes our order with the least amount of personality he possibly can, and the whole lunch is slightly awkward and we're not able to truly enjoy ourselves with the feeling of "we better hurry up and eat" lingering. By the time we ordered and received our food (which was delicious as usual) , there were still 4 other groups of customers there, and we actually left the restaurant within a minute or two after the last customers before us. Also, no one came around to ask how our food was and if we needed anything. I'm giving 3 stars because this experience didn't quite sit right with me. Yes, it was near closing, but your doors weren't closed and there was no sign saying last call/order at 2:45 or anything like that. I feel like once the kitchen approved making our lunch, customer service should have been at its peak for paying customers, who gave no attitude and tried to be as polite with the ask as possible. It was not. I still tipped 25%, because Jack (waiter 1) was polite and my 81 old mama who I was celebrating raised me that way, but I'm not sure I'll patronize them again.

After one meal, this is already one of the best Thai spots I've tried in LA!…read more Came with friends and ordered a bunch of dishes, and every single plate was ridiculously delicious. The Pad Thai was the best I've had outside of Thailand. Extremely well balanced, not too sweet, not too tangy, not drowning in sauce, just perfectly done with great noodle texture and loaded with shrimp. The Pad Kee Mao was so flavorful. Smoky, spicy, full of flavor, and had that proper "wok hei" char that makes noodles addictive. The Pad See Ew was equally rich and savory, and deeply satisfying. We also got the turnip omelette (Kai Jeow with preserved radish) and it blew my mind, honestly. It is so simple, but packed with flavor. Somehow one of the best egg dishes I've ever had. The morning glory with pork was another standout, super fresh, garlicky, and cooked perfectly. Everything came out hot, portions were generous, and the whole table went silent because the food is too good to talk through lol. On top of that, the servers were super nice, friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better despite how busy it was :) Packed restaurant, amazing energy, AMAZING food. This place just ruined average Thai food for me. Already thinking about when I'm going back!!!

I really wish I can love this place but it's really disappointing. What once was known as the best…read moreThai food in LA, is no longer the case. We got the raw shrimp salad, spicy catfish and bbq pork over rice. The raw shrimp "salad" is probably the best thing we've ate, but the chili sauce was over powering and couldn't really taste the freshness of the shrimp. And I feel like there could've been saw garlic to go along with it, but nope, just decorative cabbages that is not edible. As for the bbq pork over rice, the sausage was good and the crispy pork too. But the BBQ pork itself was HORRIBLE I literally spit it out. It tasted like old refrigerated dry meat, barely edible. And then the spicy catfish, the portion was so small, it looked like someone ate half of it. The pieces very tiny and it was so dry it tasted like it was refried. The spicy sauce didn't help much. And I overheard the table next to us waited around 30 mins for their dishes. Overall, I'll not be coming back here. There are much better Thai spots than this. Not to mention the parking is horrible as it was valet only on a Saturday.
