First impressions? Huge, bright dining room! Almost distractingly so. But let's be honest--I didn't come to Backlot Taphouse for the square footage. I came for the Detroit-style pizza, easily the most underrated pizza style there is. If you know, you know. I ordered The Cadillac: cream cheese, cherry peppers, hot honey. On paper, it's chaos. In practice? A beautifully thought-out balance of sweet and spicy. Rich without being heavy, heat without going overboard. Someone in that kitchen gets it. And for a moment, it's flirting with greatness. Almost a perfectly executed Detroit pie... until the crust. That signature Detroit crisp--the caramelized, fried-edge crunch--is just a little undercooked. Not bad, but quickly soggy. Just missing that final snap that makes this style elite. Still, credit where it's due. This is a valiant effort, and not an easy style to pull off outside its home turf. I see you, Omaha. You're closer than you think! read more

I am obsessed with this pizza place! I went to the Elkhorn location months ago, and can't stop thinking about the texture and taste of these Detroit pizzas. This was my first time coming to the Aksarben location, and it was a much different vibe from the standard restaurant experience we had in Elkhorn. I made a reservation for 8, and the day before our dinner, the manager called to let me know it was a UNO hockey night, so they couldn't get us in until a little later than planned. This worked fine for us, and the manager was very nice about it. When calling ahead to make my reservation, I mentioned bringing in a cake for a birthday, and they said there was no problem with putting this in the back and no charge for us to eat it there. When my party got there, we were told there was no freezer space for our ice cream cake -- this was my bad, I should have clarified over the phone this needed a freezer rather than a fridge! Luckily, they recommended cold Stone next-door, and the staff there allowed us to store our cake for an hour free of charge!! The overall venue here is much more like a sports bar than a restaurant. It was very loud at all times, although it was only about half full at the later time we came in. There were some fun table games to play like tic-tac-toe, connect the dots, And table shots. There is a pretty limited bar menu, as they are primarily known for their beers on tap, of which they have plenty! The mule I got was fine. I absolutely love the butchers word pizza, it has all the toppings I like, and they are very generous with these! My friend got a regular pepperoni pizza, and when I tried it, I realized the reason I love this spot so much is the oil they use on their pizza dough-- this sees into the dough, and gives it such an amazing flavor. Unfortunately, my pizza here had a thicker crust. Then the butchers word I got in Elkhorn, so it wasn't quite as good. Still a great pizza, but not the high I was chasing From a couple months ago! Oh my word is this place a beer drinkers dream! They have to many options on tap, you're sure to find something to enjoy. My boyfriend and I were looking for a place to stop for some greasy pizza and we hit the jackpot here. We ordered the 4 cheese with bacon added, wings, and some fries. It was a little more expensive but we appreciated the quality of the food and the large portions. We walked away with lunch for the next day that was equal if not bigger than the amount of food we ate in store. The workers were lovely, they made sure everything looked and tasted great. Personally I appreciate the establishments that allow customers to have a little more independence. We were able to order at the bar when we were ready, get our own drinks, and eat without interruption. Good heavens do I love their pizza - loaded with cheese and toppings and the crust is crisped to perfection. The fries too are a basket of crispy goodness. (I recommend getting a side of beer cheese for the fries despite the fact that their beer cheese could use some improvement.) I always find at least one beer I like on tap and appreciate they'll let you sample before you commit to a pint. As I said, the service can be hit or miss but it's typically friendly if not attentive, and only once was it downright awful. read more

My grandparents loved the bourbon bbq pizza and we all shared the pretzels which were also so good. If you're a fan of Detroit style pizza, this is the place to go in Omaha! They also had two different hard ciders on tap making me incredibly happy! Went there for lunch and ordered a pizza ($22.00) thinking we would have leftovers to take home. When it came out, it was FOUR square slices, roughly 4"X3", that was it! I have traveled all over the globe and don't ever recall spending $22 for 4 slices of pizza. Not to mention, before we went, their website suggested that I download the InKind app and get $20 off my bill of $60. Traditional Fries: Crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, these fries were a great accompaniment to our meal. Detroit Pizza: Our kids loved the Detroit-style pizza. The thick, airy crust with caramelized edges and generous toppings made it a hit. "Just Fries": Simple yet satisfying, the kids enjoyed these classic fries while engaging in the available games. Wandering from downtown to Aksarben in search of locales open for lunch on a holiday, we found the Backlot Taphouse. What a find! I love pizza and while I've tried and tolerated Chicago deep dish, NY style remains my go-to but ... Detroit pizza! Oh. my. grace! The size here is perfect for two, but don't worry, it's nobody's personal pan. We had the four-cheese and the aroma was intoxicating. The flavors of the different cheeses came through, the rich tomato-y sauce and a delicious buttery crust with that to-die-for cheese crunch -- it would be easy to overdose, but one slice/one quarter of the pizza was enough. And now I have a hefty leftover slice for later! There seemed to be a wide variety of IPAs available, but I'm not a fan, so we went with a cherry cider that was really good. We tried the cheese pizza in order to get an idea of the basics. I can't wait to go again and try some of the other varieties. Last but not least, the people here are great! We chose this for Detroit style which we had never had. I was excited about the choices and the DIL and I had the one with beer cheese and the men had the all meat. Personally, it's like Pizza Hut pan pizza with globs of sauce on top. It was just okay. They are the perfect size for 2 people. I'm not a fan of ordering at the counter. I think it's actually a disservice to the establishment because I'm going to close out without ordering more. This is abar that serves Detroit-style pizza to soak up the alcohol. It's a place to hang out, catch up, maybe watch some sports and then walk over to the arena for whatever event is happening. The pizza is really really good, especially the barbecue chicken pie. We drank water, but the bar looked like it had a good assortment of craft beer and cocktails. Service was a lacking. The bartender was the only FOH worker, so we had to order at the bar, gather our own drinks and bus our own table. Hopefully it was just an off night. 3.5 stars, rounding up to 4. read more

The board games - though sometimes sticky and missing pieces - add a layer of fun, and the food is excellent. Oh, and of course there are plentiful tap options... The wine pours are underwhelming though for the price. I would visit again. I heard the MOTOWN PHILLY is their second most popular item. For years I raved about the hangover burger... but last Wednesday the eggs were completely disgusting and the meat was the worst. We went on a Saturday night around 6-ish, it was busy, but there were some small tables still open. Initially, we were taken aback by the absence of traditional table service. However, a kind patron seated nearby quickly told us that you order at the bar. Once we found that out, any concerns about service dissipated, and we were promptly attended to. Comparing it to the sister location in Elkhorn, (Backlot Pizza + Kitchen) within the movie theaters, I prefer the traditional restaurant setting that's there. There are more food options there too. I had the smash burger, and it didn't disappoint. Juicy, messy, very satisfying. My husband enjoyed the Philly Cheesesteak. The fries were really good too. Watching the other customers order, it became evident that the Detroit-style pizza reigns supreme here. Having sampled it at the Elkhorn location, I can attest it's very good. We tried the Philly cheesesteak pizza after my only complaint about Backlot...which was that we saw a crab Rangoon pizza on their menu and we were so excited to try it, but when we went to order, we were told it was gone and they hadn't updated the menu. Sad day! We were quickly made happy again by the Yakuza fries, which I'm upset I didn't get a photo of. The cheesesteak pizza was great, as were the beers we tried. They have a whole wall of beers on tap, and other drink options too, so everyone is able to get something they like! The crust on the pizza had that signature Detroit style cheesy crisp to it, and the topping amount was plenty without being overwhelming. We think we have found our new favorite pizza place in Omaha. We never heard about "Detroit style" pizza but we now love it. It's a rectangular pizza, four generous slices, with a medium crust, lots of sauce, and great toppings. Like an old-style taphouse, you go up to the bar to place your order. We've usually waited in line with 2-4 people ahead of us, and we've learned that if we want to carry out to order online and walk in. The line wait is worth it though because it's personal, you get your drinks at the same time, and you know where you are in the queue to get your food. The metal chairs may not be the most comfortable, but the high tops and tables are big, solid wood and comfy. It's not a loud sports bar, although there is plenty of sports stuff around. It's just casual and friendly. We go back every week or so. love it. read more

Food: The specialty here is Detroit-style pizza. The buffalo chicken pizza was a very crispy and satisfying kind of pan pizza with a good balance between bread, sauce, and toppings. This was our first time trying Detroit-style pizza. Not sure if this is authentic. We decided it was somewhat like Chicago-style pizza but much less overwhelming in terms of cheese heaviness/amount. Overall, not my favorite pizza in Omaha but it was good and I'm very glad I tried it! We ordered Yakuza fries which were incredible - although we thought were interestingly named as it was Korean-inspired flavors though the name suggests Japanese-inspired flavors. I did not have any drinks this visit. Atmosphere: Clean, casual, and comfortable bar atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating with a variety of table sizes to accommodate different groups sizes. The baseball theme was tastefully done. The drinks were well-displayed on clipboards on the wall. Several board games and bar games were available which I absolutely love! Per their website, they host live music nights which I'd be interested in going back for! Service: The day we visited, we ordered at the bar and selected our own seating.
