On St. Paddy's Day, it was a corned beef stew that definitely hit the spot. If you're not there on a game day or holiday when they have the crock pots out, they don't serve food for purchase (aside from some tasty bagged chips), so be sure to eat before or after you come, or you can order delivery from a few nearby places. So, when we get together these days, we like to find a place that allows us to nostalgically re-live those days. We thought the Elbow Room fit the bill. Turns out, we were partially right. It's our kind of bar generally. Kind of run down and dingy but a place where you can drink cold beer. In theory, you could also play shuffleboard and darts. This particular night the dart board was not operational and the shuffleboard table was marginal at best. They had no sand to add to the table and there are dead spots on the board where the pucks literally just stop. Not optimal. But, we were having fun and learning the nuance of the board was kind of a challenge so we spent quite a bit of our evening playing anyway. When you walk in, you are hit with a fairly strong musty smell of old bar. You get used to it and it's not a big deal. The bartender this night was a good dude and took good care of us. This is definitely a locals bar and it was a pretty chill group on this particular Saturday night. If you want to find a hole in the wall to drink some beer, this fits the bill. If you want to play bar games, you might want to go elsewhere.

The place is interesting and its not entirely clear where the entrance is. Once you find it alongside 22nd St, you go into an entryway and then down a few stairs, passed a trophy case and into the basement bar. It definitely has the feel of being someone's basement because it is. Above the bar sits a house. The place is old and you can tell once you enter it but it's still kind of cool with its dim setting, christmas lights, creepy doll heads and pool table. The wallpaper across from the bar was like an 1890's Parisian style. The tap beer selection was limited to two options from what I could tell. One was Budweiser or something similar and the other was Boulevard Wheat. They also had a full bar so I imagine the bartender, Frank, can make just about whatever you wanted. Speaking about Frank, he's one of the friendliest bartenders I've ever encountered. I learned that he's been there 40 years. I suspect this place used to be a lot busier but on this evening, we were the only one's for a while. Maybe the closure of Malara's across the street hurt their business as I'm sure the prevalance of new bars downtown and midtown. I really hope this place can return to its former glory because its such a unique place in Omaha. In some ways it reminds of Homy Inn. Definitely pay it a visit and have a chat with Frank.

We were trying to find a seat when the bartender asked a question I couldn't hear. Big Bro replied we wanted to eat and have a beer. That's when we found out that despite pictures and menus of food offerings listed online, O'Leaver's does not serve food any more. However, we could eat at the Mexican restaurant next door.
