Nice bar but drinks are overpriced. $25 for a tap beer + tequila and seltzer in Hudson? Might as well go to the Lower East Side in the city and drink for those prices. read more

I ordered take out from Backbar on a rainy evening, and was impressed with the food quality. The pork and shrimp shumai and dan dan noodles were delicious! I will definitely return for outdoor dining on a better weather day! read more

Backbar - Dan Dan Noodles - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Hudson, New York

For years, this has been our favorite place in Hudson but NO MORE. The service is horrendous and the food has gone completely downhill. Never have we been treated so poorly. Their new management has no interest in customer service or care and boy does it show. This place used to be the beating heart of Hudson -- sad to see it being run into the ground. read more

Super cool bar/lounge/eatery in Hudson! I went for bingo night and had a blast. The drink menu is great and they have lot's of craft beers available. There's a wonderful outside patio that's great to sit out on during the summer. Staff was hilarious and welcoming at the bingo night. Would definitely recommend grabbing a drink here if you're here in Hudson! read more

Food was ok. Service was awful and prices are way too expensive for what it is. Definitely not going back and feeling responsible to warn others from repeating my wasting my money here. I had dim sum (three Trader Joe's dumplings) prices at $9 and the Sweet Potato curry thing, which was good, but not good or big enough to cost $14. Very disappointing and I'm honestly also disappointed with my friend who recommended us going to that place. The perfect ending to my visit was that after being ignored and waiting forever to have someone take our order the server charged us automatic gratuity, which is only for groups of 6 or more (there were 5 of us). I'm giving the place 4 stars because I would like my comment to be constructive to the business and to those who are willing to go the extra mile and read the reviews rather than just look at the score. read more

I don't know where the 2 dollar signs come from, but be ready to sell your first born for so dumplings and a drink. This is beyond a reasonable price and they look down on you for questioning the price. 45 dollars for a beer shot and 6 dumplings. Beware of this place. Go to American Glory where you can get your bang for you buck. read more

Great drinks and tasty food. Chill atmosphere. We had the pork belly, chicken lemongrass dumplings, chicken sandwich, and asparagus. All was delicious and the drinks were great as well!! read more

I came here last year and loved it so was excited to visit again while I was in town. Unfortunately, the experience is not the same... apparently new management? I ordered the tofu stir fry dish and it was both dry and mushy at the same time. The service was lack luster. My draft beer was even flat :/ . Sad all around, will not visit again. read more

Great ambience out back on a warm summer night, our beers came right away, the food was tasty, WHEN it finally arrived. We sat for almost an hour without even our appetizer. The server walked by often, no eye contact whatsoever. There were not many customers (only two other tables), so the place didn't seem busy. When one of us eventually went to inquire, the food was ready immediately - except for one of the meals (a noodle dish - how long can that take to prepare?). Inquired again - coming soon. It did not appear. The rest of us were almost done eating, while one of us was still waiting. He went to inquire again - was handed the noodle dish - without the tofu, for which he paid extra. The staff seemed clueless. On our way out, I asked if someone had called in sick or something. Very nicely. I was once a server, I get it when there's an off night. BUT, no one apologized or asked how we were doing as we waited and waited. The woman I spoke with (manager?) said something like "It's 114 degrees in the kitchen, our workers are boiling. It's our 50th hour this week. I haven't seen my parents in 6 months. (Huh?? Ask me what I've been through lately...a lot. Are you kidding me? Also, what would OSHA say about the 114 degrees??) She did then apologize, but sheesh. Also, we had to pay before we were served, at which time we left a tip, figuring the service would be at least adequate, if not good. Really, we are nice, understanding people, but this sucked. read more

Yum! Malaysian/Thai spicy flavorful fresh small plates of food and small menu. Chef Zac Pelaccio returns to the cuisine he did in NYC. Unique in Hudson and very delicious. Open for lunch at noon. Lovely funky open outdoor seating area a la Texas -- not quite comfortable dinky tables and chairs. (No idea how/if they will accommodate diners in cooler weather.) It's all about the food, hanging and chilling (and drinks for those who imbibe). If you go thinking it's about you, the bartender and server will both quickly disabuse you of that notion, telling you: food comes out in whatever order it's done. Servers and back waiters have not a clue -- like much of Hudson, servers are young and thin and that's their qualification. But if you're adventurous, have time, are not feeling uptight or impatient, and want to eat Malaysian in casual setting, this may be for you. I'll be back. Cost: $40 pre-tip for 3 plates shared between 2 people. Oh and music track is fun. Texas style/Grateful Dead. read more

I can't stop thinking about those slimy, disgusting dumplings...I AM GAGGING. Last night, my friend and I visited Back Bar to start what was supposed to be a lovely evening out on the town in Hudson. But what enticed us from the outside was deceiving. If you paid $13.50 for five wet, nasty dumplings you'd be pissed too. I feel violated. And not only am I offended by the food, but the staff were abrasive. Felt like I was on some sort of assembly line during the ordering and food/drink delivery process. Don't be deceived by the bright lights and bohemian decor. Shame on you Back Bar. If you want to charge Brooklyn prices then up your service and food quality game. UPDATE: The manager sends me a private message saying I should be "ASHAMED" for posting my review and offers no customer service efforts whatsoever. What a disgusting business that doesn't even take the genuine concerns of their customers seriously and instead sends denigrating messages privately, calling me names and telling me I should be publicly shamed...VERY PROFESSIONAL BACKBAR. KUDOS TO YOU! read more

Overpriced. Plastic cups. Flat beer. Don't waste your money. Excited to see what happens next with the space. This bar won't last long.

Sweet potato mushroom curry ($18) came in a small plastic takeout container less than half full. Rude staff. Not worth leaving the house for. read more

The frozen mezcal drink was on point. Unfortunately everything else missed the mark. Got ribs, shrimp with rice and teriyaki dumplings and also a 16oz Narragansett. The portions were small for all three items and nothing special in the flavor department. We left still hungry and out over $80. read more

absolutely amazing service. The food was spot on, seasoned perfectly complemented with extensive drink menu. Definitely coming back and suggest you go and enjoy what they have to offer. Laid-back atmosphere, and I enjoy the rustic interior design. read more

This is only a food review. We thought we were getting entrees but they turned out to be mini portions and the saddest meal we have ever had. The Mapo tofu came in a small bowl and there was nothing special about the 3 pieces of fried chicken. Let the pictures speak for themselves. read more

We had high hopes based on the looks and reviews of this place and we're wildly disappointed. Of our group of five, two weren't even able to eat their meal. Of those who were actually able to eat their food, their meals were just okay. Nothing remarkable. The service was horrible and the food took forever to arrive. When ever we asked for something (ketchup, the check, a to go box) we waited for nearly ten minutes every request and each time had to eventually go back to the kitchen to remind the service of what we needed. Never going back. read more

There were not many places available to eat indoors on a Sunday for lunch. We sat in the back by the bar and I liked the vibe. The beer menu was varied but small and we ordered two orders of wings (about 6 pieces each). The hot wings which are pretty hot but ok if you can handle hot Buffalo wings and the black pepper wings were yummy and crispy but didn't seem to have any black pepper flavor. They were very mild. The quality of the wings was good. But beware the black pepper wings have a fish sauce glaze which my husband said turned him off because chicken shouldn't smell like fish. Lol. 3 beers, 2 orders of chicken wings and a living wage charge of over $10 brought our bill to over $65. We also gave a tip on top because we appreciate good service. The server was really nice. Probably the most expensive "snack" I've ever had. read more

When visiting Hudson, I came here with some friends for drinks as we knew some others were already there. They had a good amount of seating and a pretty extensive drink menu. Due to COVID, everyone stayed seated in a tinted area that was relatively comfortable even though it was much colder outside. The bartender commented on my youthful complexion so I definitely had a good night. This is a great place to catch up with friends with little frills compared to places like the Maker Lounge. It's a very comfortable and down to earth atmosphere. read more

I have loved this place for a couple years, but there have been shortcuts w the pandemic/social distancing. The food is still great but some things have changed for the worse. the two times I've visited in the past month the people taking orders were rude and unwelcoming, looking at me as if they wondered what I was doing there. Also, the ordering situation is very confusing, the menu board is very difficult to read (ie crappy font) and there's no menu at the register so they person taking orders gets even more rude when you can't remember all the items you and your party decided upon. Overall, I'm very glad to see that back bar is so popular right now (perhaps more so than they were in the past), but the customer service is thumbs down. If you're building in living wages (big thumbs up for that!) then please hire people who are deserving of it. read more

It's rare that I go to a restaurant that I care enough to review afterwards. The biggest issue was the service or lack there of. It took 30 minutes after sitting down before our dim sum orders were placed - and that was only after we walked the sheets ourselves up to the server. And though it's advertised that parties of 6 or more will receive automatic gratuity of 20 percent, our party of 5 received the same automatic gratuity. On top of that the food was disappointing in portion and in price. This restaurant only received one more start that the lowest possible only because the food tasted decent. I heavily DO NOT recommend. read more

Just like I was prepared to hate Hudson (and didn't), I was prepared to be disappointed by Back Bar (and wasn't). This was just pure fun and zero attitude. Great atmosphere, good classic rock soundtrack, and some of the best chicken wings I have ever tasted! We had the Bang Bang Shrimp and a salad, as well. As soon as we finished I began scanning the menu again - I know we will be back and I will want to try everything. Plus, some slushie drinks! read more

Super overpriced, clearly catering to the tourist / hipster crowd. More expensive drinks than any other place that we tried. Beer selection limited and not great, so don't go here if you're looking for a brew. Tots were good, bartenders nice. read more

Eating out is a treat for me as I prefer to cook at home to save money, so it was really disappointing coming here and having such a poor experience. My friend and I walked in for dinner after reading the menu, the mushroom soup sounded delicious. Everything was fine until the food came, and there was about a half cup of soup in this giant bowl that costs $15. When the food runner put it down I asked "why is it so empty?" to which he responded "that's how the chef wants it served". I tried the soup and it was good but very spicy, and my water cup had little bugs and dirt in it. When the waitress came by I asked for a new water cup and brought up the tiny amount of soup again and she said "oh" and changed the subject... it was very awkward. I waited for my water cup to have the rest of my soup since it was a little spicy for me, and the waitress came back 15 mins later with the check and my cup. By then it was cold and we were just kind of over it so we left. They also sat us right next to a bird that got its head stuck in the fence and died there so that was nice. I wouldn't go back :( read more

First time in my life I see a restaurant add on 20% to your food and drink bill and call it a LIVING WAGE FEE FOR THIER STAFF. COLUMBIA COUNTY NY LIVING WAGE AMOUNT PUBLISHED ONLINE IS $14.81 PER HOUR WITH NO KIDS. And ny state requires the restaurant to pay $8.35-10 per hour for wait staff , SO this place adds 20% to the bill and then a tip of at least 15% -20% for normal tipping would surely be playing well over the ' LIVING WAGE " AMOUNT , THIER driNKS are not cheap at $12-14 EACH. SO you are expected to pay 20% on a $14.00 drink which is $2.80. Plus a tip of 15% is $2.10.. So in a 1 hour time frame 1 customer for 1 drink is $8.25 plus $2.80 plus $2.10 equaling $13.15.. AND THATS 1 customer 1 drink 1 hour ---so i ask where is the LIVING WagE issue.?.. don't be guilted to pay a tip after being charged 20% surcharge is my advice . read more

We are visiting Hudson from Philly, a city with no limit of yummy Asian restaurants. We LOVED Back Bar. The flavors that they put together (and the way they meld the ingredients) were surprising and original - so much so, that we are trying to figure out a way to go back (we have dinner reservations elsewhere tonight), even if we have to have a fourth meal at midnight! The portions are not gigantic, but that's okay. It allowed us to try extra things. Last night, we had the smashed green beans (so fresh and delicious), the spiced pepper fried chicken, and the shrimp pancake. All amazing. Try Back Bar with an open mind to experiencing a funky and fun, delicious experience. read more

This is a fun place to go for drinks. It is tucked behind a store, and has a unique vibe. They had the wood heater going, so it was nice and toasty. The bartender and server were really friendly and helpful with the menu. The music was very cool too. I recommend this spot. read more

My first experience with the livable wage fee. I did not expect this fee nor was I told about this at any time. When I saw this fee on the check, I was taken aback. A contractual arrangement with a business usually entails both parties agreeing to services and fees beforehand. There was no such agreement, thus contractually I'm doubtful that they would have a legal leg to stand on should you refuse to pay this and were duped like myself. However, if they were upfront and explained this to customers beforehand, the customer then has the option to make the contract viable. Further, an honest establishment would just raise their menu prices 20% instead of some woke drivel about fairness. read more

I like the food. But it's overpriced. The service here is incredibly inefficient and slow. The bar is well stocked and has unique offerings, which really kept this review from being one star. Pros: Nice outdoor seating area and open air restaurant. Cons: Very slow and sporadic service. We ordered one appetizer and two basic entrees. One of the entrees came first, in about 20 minutes. Our absolute FAVORITE place to eat in Hudson! The Dan Dan noodles are absolutely delicious, as are the dumplings, which have a thin dough and are cooked to crispy perfection. The cured pork bao (2 per order) is so yummy, as are the wings. The staff is super friendly and engaging and the atmosphere is so cool (old mechanics garage originally, but they just took over the adjoining space, formerly an antique shop, as well). They have PLENTY of socially distanced seating, including a huge, heated outdoor tent, so you can patronize them year round, and especially now, during this incredibly challenging time for the hospitality industry. They are taking their Covid protocols seriously, so you can be confident of a safe eating experience. Hudson is a great little walking town and we need the merchants, including Backbar, to survive! read more

nice vibe, good drinks, food was good as well but super spicy. wait was long, and service was s l o w w w. but overall, an alright spot. they added a 17% "living wage fee" to the bill which is essentially a tip but didn't add it to the tip line, so it is easily missed... which i feel is kind of shady. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ read more

Our initial impression of Back Bar for lunch was favorable - outside seating, great energy, and terrific cocktails (the Punch and Judy was tasty!). Unfortunately, our dining experience was somewhat tarnished when we received our food order - three Skirt Steak satays and the Pork Shoulder Laab, both of which were tasty but ridiculously small considering the hefty price. Kat the manager was quite professional and suggested other items on the menu. After paying $50 for two drinks and two very small servings, my recommendation would be to enjoy Back Bar's terrific outdoor bar and enjoy lunch somewhere else in downtown Hudson. There is a wide variety of dining choices closeby. read more
